If you can start a journey, you’re halfway there: on how the literature on the study of territorial agglomerations and sustainability has co-evolved

    No full text
This research conducts a theoretical literature review on firm territorial agglomerations, assessing whether scientific contributions have addressed sustainability-related aspects, how these aspects have co-evolved with the field, and their impact on firms’ competitiveness within the contemporary business paradigm. To fulfill this objective, a comprehensive literature review based on objective criteria was carried out through bibliometric analysis using one of the most prestigious scientific databases: the Clarivate Web of Science. Based on the literature reviewed and the empirical evidence, there are important research gaps on aspects related to sustainability in companies located in territorial agglomerations of firms. Therefore, we propose new lines to be covered by future research. We also add a succinct list of implications for practitioners and policymakers for the implementation of more sustainable regional policies. This research was funded by “Plan Estatal de Investigacion Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2021-2024” of the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion, with the reference PID2020-119642GB-I00

Spanish Embassy in London: Refuge for English Catholics. Anne Jay (1586-1661)

Hispanic embassy in London played a critical role during 17th century, not only regarding the diplomatic relationship with the English crown but also as a reference for English Catholicism. Thus, many English Catholics were hosted and sheltered by the Spanish delegation involving both names of the social elite and people of humble origins. This study aims at illustrating how Spanish ambassadors influenced this latter social group through the profile of Anne Jay as a case study. She represents a paradigmatic case of an English Catholic whose fate was tightly bound to the ambassadors’ intervention and the own destiny of the Embassy

Social knowledge about others is anchored to self-knowledge in the hippocampal formation

    No full text
Mounting evidence suggests the human hippocampal formation (HF) maps how different people’s attributes relate to each other. Yet, it’s unclear if hippocampal map-like knowledge representations of other people are shaped by self-knowledge. Here, we test if a prominent heuristic involving an implicit reliance on self-knowledge when rating others, egocentric anchoring-and-adjustment, is present in the HF when relational information about different social entities is retrieved. Participants first provided likelihood ratings of partaking in everyday activities for themselves, fictitious individuals, and familiar social groups. During a neuroimaging task that doesn’t require using self-knowledge, participants then learned a stranger’s preference for an activity relative to one of the fictitious individuals and inferred how the stranger’s preference related to the groups’ preferences. Isolating the neural representation of egocentric anchoring when retrieving relational social knowledge, the HF and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) represented group entities’ preferences relative to the self. Furthermore, the HF selectively represented group identity over other learned entities, confirming the HF was primarily engaged by social comparisons in the more ample map-like reference frame. Taken together, these results imply that self-knowledge implicitly influences how the HF learns about others

Más allá del poder dual: prefiguración y la apropiación del espacio

In the wake of ‘assembly movements’ such as Occupy Wall Street, the concept of ‘pre-figuration’ has received increased attention in radical political theory. What remains under-theorised, however, is the mannerand the extent to which prefiguration often implies a territorial claim as a way to secede from existing power relations and institutions. This arti-cle seeks to establish this relation between prefiguration and the appropriation of space. It first retraces the idea of prefiguration as a revolutionary strategy to the Paris Commune of 1871 and reconstructs how this experience led to a split within the international workers’ movement. It then continues to distinguish between prefiguration and ‘dual power’, which was introduced by Lenin, and argues that the latter does not bear the same territorial conno-tation. Finally, the paper turns to acontemporary example of prefigurative politicsthat is underpinned by a territorial claim–namely, the ZAD or zone à défendrein Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

Electrodeposition of Sb2Se3 solar cells on ceramic tiles

    No full text
This work presents the first reported synthesis of Sb2Se3 solar cells deposited on ceramic substrates. A novel lowtemperature two-step electroplating method was introduced for fabricating high-quality Sb2Se3 thin films, aimed at creating efficient and reproducible solar cells. The films were deposited on Mo-coated ceramic substrates, as well as on glass substrates, addressing challenges such as high surface roughness and potential short-circuiting in ceramics. Detailed characterization of the films included X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The performance of the solar cells was evaluated through I-V curve analysis, demonstrating that ceramic substrates are a viable alternative to glass substrates. These results represent a significant advancement in integrating Sb2Se3 solar cells into building materials, enhancing the potential of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) technology.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

Freight transport is a fundamental pillar of the European economy, accounting for more than 9 % of the European Union’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Seaports are critical nodes in this logistics chain, handling more than 67.8% of freight transport in tonne-kilometres. This article presents an intelligent traffic management system designed specifically for road access to the Port of Rotterdam, the largest and busiest port in Europe, with the aim of optimising the flow of vehicles, improving operational efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions

Bridging the Machine-Human Gap in Blurred-Image Classification via Entropy Maximisation

    No full text
Proceedings of: 2025 IEEE 6th International Conference on Image Processing, Applications and Systems (IPAS)Recent studies point to an accuracy gap between humans and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models when classifying blurred images, with humans outperforming ANNs. To bridge this gap, we introduce a spectral channel-based range-constrained entropy merit function, from which we devise a zero-phase, circular symmetric blind deblurring method. We apply it as a pre-processing step for image classification and test it using pre-trained classification models and images blurred by Gaussian kernels. We compare our method to state-of-the-art restoration methods, showing its superiority, effectively bridging the machine-human gap for most models and blur levels. Our results also rank higher than the competitors in no-reference and full-reference image quality metrics. Notwithstanding the limitation to zero-phase blur, this work shows that, for image pre-processing aimed at visual tasks, it may be advantageous to use merit functions based on vision science and information theory, rather than on the expected error to the latent image

    No full text
Introduction and objectives: In asymptomatic individuals, left bundle branch block (LBBB) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, but its impact on maximal functional capacity remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate maximal aerobic capacity (peakVO2) in asymptomatic adults with LBBB without structural heart disease and compare it to an age-, physical activity-, and sex-matched control population. Methods: This prospective case-control study included asymptomatic adults with isolated LBBB and matched controls. All participants underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing and echocardiography. The primary outcome was to compare peakVO2 and percent predicted peakVO2 (pppeakVO2) between LBBB and matched controls. Secondary outcomes included differences in left ventricular indexed end-diastolic volumes (iLVEDV) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Multivariate linear mixed models were used to analyze primary and secondary outcomes. Results: A total of 162 participants (81 with LBBB and 81 controls) were included. The mean age was 65.7 ± 10.2 years, and 106 participants (65.4%) were women. The mean pp-peakVO2 and peakVO2 were 93.6 ± 16.9% and 19.9 ± 6.4 mL/kg/min, respectively. There were no significant differences in cardiovascular risk factors, NT-proBNP, or hemoglobin values between groups. Multivariate analysis showed that the presence of LBBB was associated with lower peakVO2 (−3.3mL/kg/min, 95%CI, −4.6 to −2.1; P < .001) and pp-peakVO2 (−17.2%; 95%CI, −22.1 to −11.9; P < .001). Regarding secondary endpoints, individuals with LBBB showed higher iLVEDV (+4.4 mL/m2, 95%CI, 1.3 to 7.6; P = .006) and lower LVEF (−2.8%, 95%CI, −4.3 to −1.2; P < .001) compared with controls. Conclusions: In this study, adults with isolated LBBB showed reduced maximal functional capacity compared with controls.

Identification of salinization processes in coastal aquifers using a fuzzy logic and data mining based methodology: study case in a Mediterranian coastal aquifer (Spain)

    No full text
In coastal aquifers, the seawater intrusion can mask the effects of salinity regional groundwater flows, connate waters mobilization or contaminant process. Therefore, to discriminate between all the processes that have taken place in the coastal aquifer, is a complex task. Normally, traditional hydrogeochemical methods (e.g., Piper and Durov) together with statistical multivariate techniques (e.g., cluster and factorial analysis) and other methods (e.g., ionic deltas and isotopic studies) have been used to understand the hydrogeochemistry of aquifers and to confirm previous hypothesis. This paper presents a characterization of the salinization process in coastal aquifers, by means a fuzzy logic and data mining based methodology, which has not been used before for this purpose in a coastal aquifer. The proposed fuzzy methodology is based on the use of the data mining computer tool Predictive Fuzzy Rules Generator (PreFuRGe). The results have been obtained by processing groundwater samples analyses with PreFuRGe. The parameters used for the experimentation have been: temperature, electric conductivity, redox potential, total dissolved solids, silicon dioxide, oxidability, major ions (chloride, sulphate, bicarbonate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium), and minor ions (arsenic, bromide, lithium, boron, strontium, chromium and fluoride). The application of this method has made it possible to differentiate several overlapping hydrogeochemical processes, such as seawater intrusion, the entry of high salinity regional groundwater flows with high concentrations of strontium, magnesium, lithium and sulphates, and the effect of contamination from agricultural activities, with the presence of nitrates. The qualitative obtained results in this paper have been compared to previous research carried out in the same coastal aquifer, and it is proved that the used fuzzy methodology is a powerful tool for discriminating between overlapping geogenic and anthropogenic processes in coastal aquifers

Estimation of the population atributable fraction due a to excess body fat in primary care patients : IBERICAN study

    No full text
The burden of disease attributable to excess body fat (EBF) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may be underestimated due to problems correlating BMI with body fat. The aim of this study is to compare the population attributable fraction (PAF) of EBF in T2DM assessed with various parameters. Material and methods : Prevalence study based on the baseline visit of the IBERICAN study. Mixed unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of T2DM for the various categories of BMI, of the estimation of EBF according to the CUN-BAE (Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator) and of waist circumference (WC), stratifying by sex. The PAF was calculated for each of the EBF estimates. Results : A total of 7752 patients from IBERICAN study were eligible, of them 1536 (19.8 %) achieved T2DM criterion, The prevalence of diabetes was higher in men, in those with a lower level of education, and in those who reported a low level of physical activity. Subjects with diabetes were older, had a higher BMI, a higher CUN-BAE-estimated body fat percentage (eBFP) and a higher waist circumference. One in three cases T2DM risk was attributed to elevated BMI, whereas in the CUN-BAE case it was attributed to 9 out of 10 men and 2 out of 3 women. One out of two cases of T2DM in women, and less in men, was attributed to an excess WC. Conclusions : The burden of disease attributable to EBF in the case of T2DM may be underestimated. Therefore, EBF should be used, together with BMI, WC -especially in women-, and the CUN-BAE to better estimate the risk of T2DM and to adapt dietary or lifestyle recommendations in daily clinical practice
