Do aspen smother or stoke the flames?

Perhaps you’ve heard of—or seen—fires decreasing in intensity (or extinguishing altogether) when they encounter an aspen stand. For a long time, firefighters, managers, and ecologists have characterized aspen forests as being low flammability, fire-resistant, “firebreak” forest types after observations of crown fires in conifer forests suddenly dropping down to surface fires upon entering adjacent aspen stands. However, high-intensity fires do spread through aspen-dominated forests, and aspen is known to regenerate vigorously after fire. For my M.S. research at Utah State University, I sought to explore this apparent paradox of aspen’s relationship with fire by asking, “what other evidence is there for aspen reducing fire behavior? Under what conditions does aspen support or inhibit fire?” Understanding if, how, where, and when aspen stands reduce fire activity is important for informing forest managers, firefighters, homeowners/developers, and policymakers

Data for: Channel Response to Flow Augmentation: Diamond Fork River, UT Dataset
A river\u27s physical features and channel dimensions are determined by the water and sediment supplied to it. The Diamond Fork River, located in central Utah–received large trans-basin diversion flows from 1915-2003, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the response of a river to a large increase in flow.
Our project goals were to describe 1) channel response to this large and long artificial flow augmentation and 2) how the channel recovered after the removal of the diversion flows. The objective of this thesis is to document the channel condition throughout the 20th century to present day as a basis for describing the impact of flow augmentation on channel change and for guiding future river management.
This work builds on the findings of (Jones, 2018) by adding resolution to the 20th century changes with additional historic air photos. We also add information on historic river channel elevation by studying locations that the river abandoned in the 20th century. We find the extent and nature of channel adjustment depends on whether the valley is narrow or wide. Floods larger than the diversion flows produced channel change followed by a recovery period that allowed the channel to narrow. After diversion flows were removed from the river in 2004, the river channel continues to narrow, form meander bends, and riverbank vegetation has begun to hold the channel in place
Experimental Investigation on Flexural Behavior and Energy Absorption of Lightweight Sandwich Panels With Aluminum Honeycomb Core Embedded by Thin-Ply Carbon-Glass Fibers/Epoxy Face Sheets
Generally, designing lightweight and thin-walled structures with high mechanical performance is one of the challenging issues for mechanical and civil engineering sciences. To this aim, sandwich panels which have been designed and analyzed in present research include aluminum honeycomb core (H) and UD-thin-ply carbon (C)/glass fiber fabric (G) composite facings and investigated the effect of hybridization and stacking sequence on their static and dynamic mechanical properties while keeping thickness constant. Hybrid face sheets panels with three lay-up configurations of [G2C2G2H̅]s, [GCG2CGH̅]s, [CG4CH̅]s and non-hybrid configurations (i.e., [G4H̅]s, [C2H̅]s) were also produced as baseline. Series of 3-point flexural tests, Charpy impact tests, visual inspection and scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation were performed. The results showed improvement of the flexural strength, core shear strength, facing bending strength and static energy absorption of the [G2C2G2H̅]s in comparison with [G4H̅]s, by 100%, 109.1%, 59.87% and 70%, respectively. Furthermore, the dynamic energy absorption of the [GCG2CGH̅]s increased by 123.53%. The characterized failure mechanisms in the panels with the hybrid face-sheets were the delamination between plies; brittle fracturing of the carbon fibers, pulling out the glass fibers, deformation of the honeycomb’s cell, and delamination between skin and core. Therefore, the results of this research can be helpful for designing lightweight and high mechanical performance sandwich panels which have thickness limitation

Balancing Agriculture and Wildlife: The Impact of Elk and Deer Grazing on Farming and Ranching Lands
This article examines producers\u27 perceptions of elk and deer grazing on their lands through a survey conducted at the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) National Conference. With 140 complete responses, the study underscores the varying impacts of elk/deer grazing. The findings emphasize the need for enhanced collaboration between agricultural stakeholders and wildlife management authorities to address wildlife grazing impacts effectively. These findings also address the critical opinion of producers toward wildlife inside and outside of their private operations, as well as the interactions between producers and wildlife authorities
