    Te Kupenga – Reflecting on the Purposeful Collection, Interpretation, and Stor(y)ing of Māori Women’s Knowledges.

    This paper provides a reflection on the methodology – Te Kupenga – after being presented at a number of international Indigenous conferences. It will explore the use of this intersecting methodology as a philosophical and practical approach to gathering, interpreting, and stor(y)ing mātauranga wahine (Māori women’s knowledges). The initial research project utilized this methodology and associated methods to come to understand the ways of being of physically active wāhine Māori and connect them to atua wāhine (feminine deities). The metaphor of the kupenga derives from both the structure and use of an open weave net, often used for fishing or gathering kai (food). Similarly, this research focused on the weaving together of three approaches (Whakapapa, Mana Wahine theory, and physical activity) to intentionally gather a particular type of Māori women’s knowledge. Te Kupenga weaves together Indigenous and non-Indigenous philosophies and methods – keeping what’s needed and allowing what’s not required to pass through the gaps in the weave. In this paper, I will consider and reflect on how this methodology was applied and how it evolved to become a mechanism that can inform the design and method of contemporary Indigenous research. Ultimately, this methodology and its methods allowed a way to gather the threads of wāhine identity, whakapapa (relationality), and mana (status). It enabled an illustration of the power and potential of wāhine – as active and sacred holders of the knowledge and blueprints of both ancestors and descendants

    Thermospheric Gravity Wave Observations Over Alaska Using the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar

    It is now well known that atmospheric gravity waves play important roles in the mesosphere lower thermosphere (MLT) region (~80 - 110 km) through momentum deposition [e.g. Fritts and Alexander, 2003]. Observational and modeling studies in the past decade have revealed the importance of these waves in the higher thermospheric region (~110 - 400 km) as they contribute significantly to changes in both winds and temperatures [e.g. Vadas and Fritts, 2005]. Although case studies have revealed their presence in the thermosphere [e.g. Nicolls and Heinselman, 2007], the distributions and variability of thermospheric gravity wave parameters are unknown. Recently, a four year collaborative observational effort utilizing an all-sky airglow imager, Rayleigh lidar, and the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) has been performed over interior Alaska to study a broad spectrum of gravity waves throughout the troposphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. This presentation details the process of obtaining wave parameters from PFISR (based on a method developed by Nicolls and Heinselman, 2007) and presents preliminary wave period distributions for the winter season of 2010 - 2011. These distributions are compared to results obtained with a co-located mesospheric airglow imager

    An Investigation of the Occurrence of Mesospheric Bores Over Bear Lake Observatory, Utah (41.6° N)

    All-sky measurements of mesospheric gravity waves in the near infrared OH, O2(0,1) and the visible Ol(557.7 nm) nightglow emissions have been made from Bear Lake Observatory (BLO), Utah (41.6° N, 111.6°W). The image data were obtained over a 2-year period (2002-2003) and have been used to investigate the occurrence and properties of undular mesospheric bore events. An unexpectedly large number of mesospheric bores (about 130 events) were detected during this period. The characteristics of these events, retrieved from the image data from BLO, are presented together with comparison of recent low-latitude results

    Ensemble Machine Learning at the Edge Using the Codec Classifier Structure and Weak Learners Guided by Mutual Information

    The Codec Classifier is a low-computation, low-memory tree ensemble method that dramatically improves feasibility of image classification on resource-constrained edge devices. It achieves advantages over other tree ensemble methods due the separation of encoder and decoder tasks in the classifier. The encoder partitions feature space, and the decoder labels the regions in the partition. This functional separation of tasks enables the encoder design (partitioning) to be guided by maximizing the mutual information (MI) between class labels and the features (i.e. the encoded representation of the data) without regard to the error performance of the classifier. Experiments show maximizing MI leads to sequential partitioning of feature space that is more efficient than additive classifier models such as AdaBoost. The design results in gray-coded partitions in which adjacent regions are addressed by codewords that differ in only one bit. This novelty affords classification insights not available with other methods. The method is applied to binary classification (face detection) and multiclass classification (MNIST digits) problems

    Previous studies show that parents tend to be uncomfortable discussing sexual topics with their children, such as menstruation, masturbation, and/or condom use. This study offers a look at the part confidence plays in a parent\u27s intentions to talk to their kids about such topics. The results indicated that the confidence parents feel about discussing sexual topics is not related to how much their own parents talked with them about sex. However, the confidence they feel that could be coming from other models, like social media or peers, is related to how much parents intend to talk with their own children about sexual topics

    Online Multiplayer Video Game Play and College Adjustment

    There are an increasing number of individuals who participate in multiplayer video games and an increase in screen time overall. Due to the increase in online video game play, this study aimed to find possible positive impacts that online multiplayer video games had on freshmen who are adjusting to college, as this is a pivotal point in life. The data were collected at the beginning of the second semester and 99 freshman, 18 years or older, who regularly engaged in online multiplayer video games participated in the study. The study showed four important findings: First, students who receive support from online gaming experience lower levels of stress. Second, students who think negatively about online gaming tend to have lower levels of college adjustment. Third, higher levels of negative thoughts about gaming are linked to feeling more stressed. Fourth, students who feel less stressed tend to adjust better to college
