Healing Through Caring and Knowledge-Making in Everyday Food Practices Among LGBTQ+ Black, Indigenous, People of Colour
Three different models are used in this study to understand how everyday food practices carry healing potential through the interwoven process of caring and knowledge-making. Daily food practices reflect a mixture of tradition and modernity— borne out of our roots and our contexts. Anzaldúa’s (1987) Borderland Theory helps us understand how this mixture is made by people who straddle two borders or worlds and contest those confines. Chavez-Dueñas et al.’s (2019) HEART model names strengthening our cultural and familial traditions and roots as part of the broader processes of building cultural consciousness and connection, and engaging in collective healing. Finally, Galliher et al.’s (2017) Integrated Identity Development maps our identities and deep interconnectedness with one another, observed in daily food behaviours like cooking, eating, and sharing. This study uses food photos and interviews of 14 Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) individuals, who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) from United States and Canada, to explore how they heal, learn, and make meaning of their food practices. Participants photographed food moments across two weeks, brought these photos during a semi-structured interview at four weeks, and responded to a follow-up after eight months.
Participants’ daily food moments reflected their personal, social, and cultural contexts. Individually, participants shared definitions of healing, and intentionality and gratitude as important wellness attitudes. They experienced caring and connection through social aspects of sharing and receiving food, particularly individualizing food to express care and connecting to a sense of togetherness. Participants connected to food on a cultural level by engaging with values such as resourcefulness and marking special occasions. Participants experienced food’s historical memory by connecting with ancestry, land, and the sacred, acknowledging oppression, and creating memories. Lastly, food is a landscape of contradictory notions of authenticity and hybridity, and an arena to develop new family traditions, given caregivers’ roles as knowledge keepers. Seven participants endorsed increased mindfulness around food practices and seven participants reported increased awareness and connection to their background, loved ones, and communities at the eight-month follow-up. Modeling Permittivity Measurements of Thin Film Materials Versus Film Thickness
Measured permittivity of thin film polymeric samples were substantially less for thin samples, asymptotically approaching bulk values above ~500 μm. For ~25 μm samples the observed permittivities were as much as 50% less than for bulk measurements. This behavior has been studied for four common homogeneous polymeric materials for sample thickness in the range of ~10 μm to \u3e 1000 μm. To quantify these observations, an empirical single-parameter model was developed to correct measured permittivity of thin samples based on an effective stray capacitance in series with the samples to compensate for effects attributed to instrumentation
Engage and Connect: Using Classroom Response Systems for Better Learning
Active learning has been demonstrated to be more effective than passive learning when considering long-term retention of information. This session will include examples of how to use a classroom response system, specifically the program Poll Everywhere, to incorporate active learning opportunities in a high enrollment lecture based course. In addition to increasing student engagement, in-class questions can also help build community among students in the course. This session will include an overview of the types of questions that can be created in Poll Everywhere, as well as how student participation can be reported in the Canvas gradebook for instructors that have an individual license. In addition, an individual instructor license allows the response system to be utilized for free by all students in the course, lowering the barrier for participation for students hesitant to purchase optional course materials

Passing Ashley’s Law – Protecting Persons with Disabilities from Violent Crimes
This commentary is the personal story of Paula Vigil and common macro practice strategies implemented to pass Ashley’s Law. Ashley was the daughter of Paula and suffered from Rett Syndrome. Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of life. Rett particularly affects speech, purposeful hand use, and coordination, leaving individuals understanding more than they can communicate. In 2021, Ashley was raped by her mother’s boyfriend and passed away in the Spring of 2024 due to the trauma and complications of Rett Syndrome. The boyfriend received a sentence of 13 years with the potential of parole. Individuals protected by Utah statute under 14 years old receive a 25-year minimum sentence. The advocacy strategies explained in this commentary is one mom’s quest to bring justice to Ashley and to protect future victims
The Importance of Monitoring Beef Cattle Body Condition
A body condition scoring system commonly used in the U.S. is an objective effort to quantify a cow’s body condition with ratings from 1 (severely emaciated and weak) to 9 (excessively obese), resulting in a body condition score (BCS). Optimal BCS in commercial cow/calf operation is from 5 to 7, depending on the production stage, feed resources, and the animal’s age. IMITASD: Imitation Assessment Model for Children With Autism Based on Human Pose Estimation
Autism is a challenging brain disorder affecting children at global and national scales. Applied behavior analysis is commonly conducted as an efficient medical therapy for children. This paper focused on one paradigm of applied behavior analysis, imitation, where children mimic certain lessons to enhance children’s social behavior and play skills. This paper introduces IMITASD, a practical monitoring assessment model designed to evaluate autistic children’s behaviors efficiently. The proposed model provides an efficient solution for clinics and homes equipped with mid-specification computers attached to webcams. IMITASD automates the scoring of autistic children’s videos while they imitate a series of lessons. The model integrates two core modules: attention estimation and imitation assessment. The attention module monitors the child’s position by tracking the child’s face and determining the head pose. The imitation module extracts a set of crucial key points from both the child’s head and arms to measure the similarity with a reference imitation lesson using dynamic time warping. The model was validated using a refined dataset of 268 videos collected from 11 Egyptian autistic children during conducting six imitation lessons. The analysis demonstrated that IMITASD provides fast scoring, takes less than three seconds, and shows a robust measure as it has a high correlation with scores given by medical therapists, about 0.9, highlighting its effectiveness for children’s training applications
A Mass Balance Model of the Great Salt Lake, UT With Adaptive Management Applications
The Great Salt, Utah, USA is a saline lake that provides critical habitat for ecologic communities and generates $1.3 billion annually. It has gone through detrimental change since the 20th century. Streamflow reaching the lake has been decreased by upstream withdrawal for industrial and municipal use, causing the lake level to drop and salinity to increase to unhealthy levels. Further, in 1959, it was segregated into north and south sections by a railroad causeway. Due to the causeway and limited exchange of water through two bridges, the lake sections have significantly different water surface elevation and salinity levels. The most recent bridge in the causeway, known as the New Breach, was constructed with a rock berm that is raised or lowered to control exchange of water between the sections and can be used to maintain healthy salinity levels. Lake managers have utilized the New Breach berm to adaptively manage salinity; raising it 1.2 m in 2022 and another 1.5 m in 2023 in response to record low lake level and high salt concentrations in the south section. To inform future adaptive management decisions such as these, this research developed a model that can predict salinity and water level of both sections in response to various inflow, climate, and berm height conditions. Results from application of the model showed that the New Breach berm is a helpful tool, but long-term salinity management of the Great Salt Lake will require increasing streamflow to the lake. Pilot Testing an Asynchronous Online Harm Reduction and Pharmacotherapy Stigma Reduction Training for Substance Use Treatment Professionals
Harm reduction and pharmacotherapy approaches to addressing substance use disorder are evidence-based practices for reducing adverse health outcomes. However, professional stigma toward these approaches impedes implementation. In this pilot study, professionals working in substance use treatment services received a 4-hour asynchronous online harm reduction and pharmacotherapy training. Pre- and post-training surveys used Likert-scale questions to assess attitudes and planned actions. Four of the 23 survey items demonstrated a significant change in pre- to post-attitudes and planned actions relating to harm reduction or pharmacotherapy. These items included less attitudinal stigma towards: methadone and buprenorphine (p = .021), overdose prevention sites/ drug consumption facilities (p = .025), and naloxone distribution (p = .017), as well as lower intent to primarily promote abstinence-based interventions (p = .007). This study demonstrated that online asynchronous educational interventions show promise for reducing stigmatizing attitudes towards evidence-based practices among substance use treatment professionals
Quasi-Static Indentation Characteristics of Foam-Filled Sandwich Composite Structures With Additively Manufactured CFRP and GFRP Corrugated Cores
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the quasi-static indentation performance of polyurethane (PU) foam-filled carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) corrugated sandwich composite structures (SCSs) under different indenter tip geometries (conical, trapezoidal, hemispherical, pyramidal, and cylindrical shapes). The SCSs were produced using hybrid manufacturing methods: (1) the facesheets were fabricated using the vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) process, (2) the CFRP and GFRP corrugated cores were additively manufactured using the fused filament fabrication (FFF) process, and (3) the self-expanding PU foam-filled the open spaces in the core. The results elucidated that the indenter tip geometry and core material have a large influence on the indentation performance of SCSs. The cylindrical indenter showed the highest peak load, bending stiffness, and damage severity, while the conical indenter offered the lowest peak load, energy absorption, and damage severity. Among different core materials, CFRP corrugated core SCSs exhibited higher peak loads, specific energy absorption, and damage severity compared to ones with GFRP core. The primary damage modes were observed using an optical microscope, showing facesheet rupture, debonding between facesheets and core, core crushing, foam densification, and shear plugging. Shear plugging is a unique failure mode observed with cylindrical indenter tip geometry due to the blunt edges of the indenter, which induced large damages in SCSs. These findings provide new insight into the design and development of lightweight additively manufactured SCSs, which will benefit a wide range of industries and applications
