Empowering Girls in Sports: Combatting the Female Athlete Triad

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to address the prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad among female high school athletes. Studies indicate that while the risk factors for the Female Athlete Triad are widespread, awareness of the condition among athletes and coaches remains low.¹ Female athletes also experience higher levels of body dissatisfaction, disordered eating patterns, and associated mental health concerns compared to their male counterparts.² ³ The prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad is particularly concerning due to its long-term implications, including low bone density, amenorrhea, muscular injuries, stress fractures, abnormal lipid profiles, irreversible bone loss, depression, low self-esteem, and even increased mortality.⁴ Without early detection and intervention, many of these outcomes may become permanent. Evidence suggests that most risk factors for the Female Athlete Triad and eating disorders manifest during early adolescence, underscoring the importance of prevention programs targeting individuals aged 13–16.⁵ Non-pharmacologic interventions, such as education and behavior modification, remain the first line of defense for both preventing and treating the Female Athlete Triad.⁶ This program aims to raise awareness of The Female Athlete Triad by providing education workshops focused on intuitive eating, fostering positive body image, and promoting appropriate fueling strategies to support athletic performance. Within these workshops, specific invitations are given to encourage behavior changes, which directly address risk factors and contribute to the prevention of the Female Athlete Triad in these athletes

Nontraditional Legal Service Providers (NSLPs) Can Increase Access to Justice

Individuals who have lower incomes have minimal access to quality legal services. USU\u27s Transforming Communities Institute (TCI) co- created with lawyers, social workers, and other professionals a new initiative, the Community Justice Advocates (CJA) Program

FARMSTEAD THERAPY: Intergenerational Connection and Sense of Place via Equine Therapy

    Get PDF
Therapy has become a crucial element within society. It has offered relief, understanding, and hope for a changed future to hundreds of millions of people just in the last five years (SAMHSA, 2004). On another front, division between generations seems to be growing by the month. Political, social, and economic differences between generations “X”, “Z”, Alpha, and Baby Boomers make it appear that there is no connection whatsoever across age gaps. Because equine therapy has proven a succesful branch, especially for those of a younger demographic, Farmstead Therapy was a project designed to bring together the skills of the older to bring help to the youger in a place close to home: Preston, Idaho

Investigation of Immune/Performance Trade-Offs in Neonate Children\u27s Pythons

    Get PDF
Introduction Energetic trade-offs are a key consideration when understanding an organism’s life history. One of these tradeoffs occurs between investment in immunity and performance. Individuals that invest more energy into immunity may be less equipped to avoid predation or find food, while those prioritizing performance may be more susceptible to infection Hypothesis: In response to a novel antigen, neonate snakes will have an immune response we can measure by counting immune cells. Additionally, we predict that strike frequency, swim speed, and endurance will be reduced in snakes undergoing an immune response and that with greater immune response we will see a greater effect on behavior. To test this hypothesis, neonate Children\u27s pythons (Antaresia childreni) underwent behavioral tests, and we examined white blood cell differentials in blood smears to measure the immune response

Beyond the Finish Line: How Mindset & Setbacks Shape Future Success in High School Sprinters

    Get PDF
Introduction Across many domains, mindset has been shown to affect performance; however, quantifying that belief can be challenging to do empirically. Track and Field 100m results provide a perfect environment to attempt to quantify the magnitude of the effect of mindset on performance – timing equipment and wind sensors never lie

ROADS: A Low-Cost 3U CubeSat Approach to Rendezvous, Proximity Operations, And Docking

    Get PDF
The University of North Dakota’s Rendezvous & Operations for Autonomous Docking and Servicing (UND ROADS) mission will show through a flight demo that Rendezvous, Proximity Operations, and Docking (RPOD) can be accomplished by two 3U CubeSats at orders-of-magnitude lower cost and complexity than today’s benchmark missions. Instead of cameras or LiDAR, ROADS employs an inter-satellite RF link combined with carrier-phase differential GNSS (CDGNSS) to deliver centimeter-level relative navigation entirely onboard, eliminating reliance on continuous ground contact, ground processing or complex on-board sensor packages. Coupling this sensing architecture with an innovative re-configurable magnetic docking system and predictive Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) algorithms, enables a minimalist spacecraft bus: requiring less than 10W average power during RPOD, a cost-effective reliable cold-gas propulsion system with less than 23 m/s ∆ V and an attitude, determination & control system without star trackers. Beyond the technology firsts, UND ROADS is an integrated education and research platform. At the newly commissioned spacecraft operations center at the University of North Dakota, students and faculty will operate the mission in real time with the support of mission prime, AVS, gaining hands-on experience with scheduling, telemetry analysis, and contingency response while refining UND’s Doppler-tracking models for satellite navigation. By simultaneously advancing low-cost RPOD, collaborative spacecraft navigation techniques, and embedding authentic flight operations into an academic curriculum, ROADS aims to unlock autonomous servicing for all sizes of spacecraft while cultivating the next generation of space engineers and scientists
