Effects of Inertial Measurement Unit Location on the Validity of Vertical Acceleration Time-Series Data and Jump Height in Countermovement Jumping
Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are an example of practical technology for measuring countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, but there is a need to enhance their validity. One potential strategy to achieve this is advancing the literature on IMU placement. Many studies opt to position a single IMU on anatomical landmarks rather than determining placement based on anthropometric principles, despite the knowledge that linear mechanics act through the segmental centers of mass of the human body. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of positioning IMU sensors to approximate the trunk and lower-extremity segmental centers of mass on the validity of vertical acceleration measurements and jump height (JH) estimation during CMJs. Thirty young adults (female n = 10, 21.3 (3.8) years, 166.1 (4.1) cm, 67.6 (11.3) kg; male n = 20, 22.0 (2.6) years, 179.2 (6.4) cm, 83.5 (17.1) kg) from a university setting participated in the study. Seven IMUs were positioned at the approximate centers of mass of the trunk, thighs, shanks, and feet. Using data from these sensors, 15 whole-body center of mass models were developed, including 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-segment configurations derived from the trunk and three lower-body segments. The root mean square error (RMSE) of vertical acceleration was calculated for each IMU model by comparing its data against vertical acceleration measurements obtained from a force platform. JH estimates were calculated using the take-off velocity method and compared across IMU models and the force platform to evaluate for systematic bias. RMSE and JH values from the best-performing 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-segment IMU models were analyzed for main effects using one-way analyses of variance. The best performing 2-segment (trunk and shanks; RMSE = 2.1 ± 1.3 m x s −2 ) and 3-segment (trunk, thighs, and feet; RMSE = 2.0 ± 1.2 m x s −2 ) IMU models returned significantly lower RMSE values compared to the 1- segment (trunk; RMSE = 3.0 ± 1.4 m x s −2 ) model (p = 0.021–0.041). No systematic bias was detected between the JH estimates derived from the best-performing IMU models and those obtained from the force platform (p = 0.91–0.99). Positioning multiple IMU sensors to approximate segmental centers of mass significantly improved the validity of vertical acceleration time-series data from CMJs. The findings highlight the importance of anthropometric-based IMU placement for enhancing measurement accuracy without introducing systematic bias
Lake Powell Fish Sampling: Glen Canyon Dam Forebay Area, 2022 and 2023
Native fishes face imperilment due to habitat loss and fragmentation, megadrought, invasive species, and synergies amongst threats. These threats coalesce at Glen Canyon Dam (GCD), which impounds the Colorado River to create Lake Powell, a reservoir inhabited by a suite of nonnative fishes. Water level in Lake Powell has declined precipitously due to water overallocation and megadrought, increasing the risk of nonnative fish entrainment through the dam, as the penstocks draw water from the epilimnion. Our goal was to characterize the distribution and abundance of nonnative fishes in the vicinity of GCD and identify environmental conditions that may increase entrainment. We used active and passive sampling, hydroacoustics, and acoustic telemetry to assess the distribution and abundance of fishes. When the reservoir was stratified fish remained in the epilimnion, were present near the GCD penstocks, and thus at high risk of entrainment. When the reservoir was mixed, fish generally occupied shallower, warmer areas further from GCD, but this varied among species. The distribution of nonnative fish and accompanying risk of entrainment varies by season and epilimnion depth. Retaining more water in Lake Powell to draw water from below the thermocline would reduce the risk of nonnative fish entrainment into Grand Canyon

For centuries, racism has been an issue in society; however, the emergence of social media has drastically altered the landscape of the vulgarity and encounter of racist content. Social media has become a crucial communication, advocacy, and information battleground. While these platforms have provided a voice through which underprivileged populations become equal in terms of advocating for equality and justice, the same platforms have nurtured the breeding ground for hate messages and discriminatory ideologies. This research will look to explore the relationship between social media and racism, doing so to look at how these social media platforms amplify racist content alongside anti-racist movements and their broader influence on public perception and real-life behaviors

Strategic brand collaborations with Crocs, Cold Stone Creamery, and NYX, combined with the fashion industry\u27s embrace of pink, amplified the film\u27s impact. Notably, the extensive use of fluorescent pink paint led to a global shortage. The teaser trailer, which parodied 2001: A Space Odyssey and premiered before Avatar: The Way of Water, generated early buzz by challenging audience expectations. The “Barbenheimer” phenomenon emerged when Oppenheimer and Barbie premiered on the same day, encouraging audiences to watch both films in a double feature. This unique event, fueled by online discussions and support from cast members of both films, expanded the movie\u27s cultural footprint. Ultimately, the success of the marketing campaign highlighted the power of social media in transforming a movie into a global sensation

These women could help to fill the shortage, which would be beneficial for them to grow as professionals and for companies.
