The Effects of Secondary Students Using Metacognitive Strategies on Reading Comprehension Scores
This study focuses on researching the use of metacognitive strategies on secondary students reading comprehension scores. Metacognitive strategies are strategies that help students become more aware of their own thought process and learning. The metacognitive strategies used for this study were self-monitoring, self-regulation, self-questioning as well as the use of vocabulary knowledge. The study takes place in an intermountain west charter high school Reading for Pleasure course for students ninth through twelfth grade. All students within the Reading for Pleasure course received specialized reading instruction over a six-week term from the researcher. All students received approximately 360 minuets of specialized reading instruction using metacognitive strategies. All students took the pre reading comprehension assessment and the pre-self-efficacy questionnaire at the beginning of the term. On the last day of the six-week specialized reading instruction, all students took the post reading comprehension assessment and the post self-efficacy questionnaire. This self-efficacy questionnaire was used to determine how a student felt about their reading abilities and confidence levels associated with reading and understanding a text. While all students took the assessments and questionnaires, and participated in the specialized instruction, two students’ data was used for the study based on voluntary recruitment. The students’ data used for the study were two female students ages 16-17 in their sophomore and junior years of school. Both students were general education students at the charter school. The results of the study showed that the use of metacognitive strategies did increase both students reading comprehension scores, as shown in the post assessment results. The increase in their scores and the written results of their post self-efficacy questionnaires showed that the students developed a deeper understanding of the reading while using the metacognitive strategies taught during the specialized reading instruction. This study was completed without cost to the school or to the researcher as it was completed in the regular classroom setting and during regular classroom instruction
Women and Finances − What Utahns Need to Know: A 2025 Update
The history of Utah women and finances shows how various policies, societal beliefs, and behaviors impact the financial standing of women in the state. Upon the arrival of pioneers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Salt Lake Valley in the 19th century, 41 women were allocated lots during the initial distribution of the land, including single, widowed, and “head of household” women whose husbands were away.1 Interestingly, around the same time, the Oregon Donation Act of 1850 incentivized female migration to the West by allowing women land ownership rights. Additional federal land laws, such as the Homestead Act of 1862 and the Townsite Act of 1867, opened the way for women to make claim to property for those who were “heads of families,” and in 1868 these federal land laws were extended to Utah. Then in 1872, the Married Person’s Property Act gave Utah women control of their property.2
In the 20th century, women gained several rights concerning financial matters. In 1963, the passage of the Equal Pay Act prohibited gender-based pay discrepancies, and, with the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act3 in 1974, US and Utah women gained the right to have their own bank accounts, apply for credit, and commit to sign a mortgage without a male co-signer. These milestones allowed women to gain more financial independence and take more control of their finances.
In the past decade, several factors have impacted Utah women and their finances, some of which are a continuation of trends over the past 75 years—such as growth in women’s workforce participation and shifts in rates and ages for marriage and childbearing—alongside others that are new, such as a global pandemic.4 Since 1950, Utah women have increased their labor force participation from 24.5% to 60.7%.5 Post-pandemic, the employment rate of US women ages 25–54 recovered faster than that of men.6 The total fertility rate continues to drop in Utah (3.3 in 1970 to 1.85 in 2022), and the percentage of married women continues to drop as well (62.9% in 1970 to 54.8% in 2023).7 The median age at first marriage continues to increase in Utah (20.0 years in 1970 and 25.2 in 2023), as does the average age of mother at first birth (21.4 years in 1970 and 25.9 in 2020).8 In sum, Utah women are more involved than ever in the workforce, are more likely to be single, are bearing fewer children, and are older during major life events involving family—all factors that may impact their financial situations.
This research snapshot focuses on the changes that have occurred since the release of the UWLP 2020 report, as well as three broad stages within women’s lives and the financial considerations they encounter during those stages: The current status of women and financial literacy; The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (unemployment and outlook on the future); Childhood and adolescence (family attitudes, behaviors, and conversations around money; financial education in the home and at school; first jobs; and planning for college); Young adult years through adulthood (finances during college, student loans, labor force participation, and unpaid labor); and Retirement and senior years (marital status/living situation, financial decision making and challenges)

Productization and Qualification of a 22N Bipropellant Hydrogen Peroxide Engine
As the space industry expands quickly and green propellants enjoy growing interest, the key question of research is no longer basic viability but productization. The most valuable engine is one that is qualified and available as close to “off the shelf” as possible. But publications on the process of taking an engine from first demonstrations to true product status are rare. This paper describes the process of transitioning Benchmark Space System’s 22N Ocelot engine – first flown as the 1.0 product version in 2022 – into a high-volume, well-characterized product, including details on the qualification program for the 1.2 version, learnings from rate production, and a deep dive into a particular production reliability issue. In doing so, it hopes to shed light on not only spacecraft thruster production but on the productization of space technology in general
Novel Solutions for CubeCat Attitude Determination and Control Systems Using PCB Magnetorquers and Low Power Control Solutions
Satellite attitude determination and control systems (ADCS) can be large, heavy, and expensive relative to a CubeSat’s size, weight, and cost requirements. We have developed a compact, low-mass, inexpensive ADCS prototype suitable for a student-class 1U CubeSat. We utilize three enabling technologies to reduce size, weight, and power (SWaP): 3-axis low-profile printed circuit board (PCB) magnetorquers, a basic sensor package, and computationally efficient control. The PCB magnetorquers are mounted on the exterior of the CubeSat frame to conserve internal volume for spacecraft electronics and payload. Attitude is determined by infrared horizon sensors and a magnetometer. The control algorithms utilize computer vision principles optimized to run on a low-power, inexpensive STM32 microprocessor. The ADCS uses a standard UART interface and PC-104 connector compatible with many standard CubeSat flight computers and other components. We have demonstrated a full ADCS system that occupies less than 0.1 U, consumes less than 0.50 watts in active actuating mode, weighs less than 100 grams, and costs less than $1,500 to fabricate.
