    Get PDF

    Get PDF
A study and edition of the anonymous Catalan translation of the history of Theophilus of Adana, translated in the fourteenth century from the ninth-century Latin version of Paul the Deacon of Naples, who in turn translated its sixth-century Greek original. The Catalan text has been preserved in the Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de El Escorial Library Ms M-II-3, dated in the first third of the fifteenth century, which also includes a life of Saint Mary of Egypt belonging to the same tradition. The work includes the pact with the devil topic (M210-219 of the Thompson’s index and 3566-3572 of Tubach’s), of long-enduring artistic and literary fame, running through the Middle Ages in diverse literary genres and culminating in the myth of Faust as treated by Marlowe and Goethe. This Catalan translation and the Latin tradition from which it derives are analysed. The study includes the critical edition of the Catalan text, previously unpublished, annotated from the Latin text edited by Meersseman (1963) and Ms Thott 128 of the Royal Library of Copenhagen, closer to the underlying model followed by the Catalan translator, representing, in turn, the universal collection of miracles that Gonzalo de Berceo must have used as a source in the Milagros de Nuestra Señora

Parte I

    Get PDF
Through this long path, relationships are considered not only with German volumes and coetaneous works of the same subgenre but also with another subgenre so closely related thematically and graphically: the so-called «Plenarium». The extensive review of German and Spanish publications and printers from the period of 1473 to 1550 is conducted through three exemplary woodcut prints: the illustrations for the first three Sundays of Advent, as these are typically the first images in such volumes. The scrutiny of the proliferation, progress, and splendor of prints in German texts provides a concise general overview of significant printers, along with the names of certain designers and cutters of woodblocks and woodcut plates, such as Hans Schäufelein and Urs Graf

Lepton mixing from Δ(3 n^2) and Δ(6 n^2) and CP

    No full text
We perform a detailed study of lepton mixing patterns arising from a scenario with three Majorana neutrinos in which a discrete flavor group Gf=Delta (3 n^2) or Gf=Delta (6 n^2) and a CP symmetry are broken to residual symmetries Ge=Z3 and Gnu=Z2 x CP in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors, respectively. While we consider all possible Z3 and Z2 generating elements, we focus on a certain set of CP transformations. The resulting lepton mixing depends on group theoretical indices and one continuous parameter. In order to study the mixing patterns comprehensively for all admitted Ge and Gnu, it is sufficient to discuss only three types of combinations. One of them requires as flavor group Delta (6 n^2). Two types of combinations lead to mixing patterns with a trimaximal column, while the third one allows for a much richer structure. For the first type of combinations the Dirac phase as well as one of the Majorana phases are trivial, whereas the other two types of combinations predict in general all CP phases to be non-trivial and also non-maximal. Already for small values of the index n of the group, n<=11, experimental data on lepton mixing can be accommodated well for particular choices of the parameters of the theory. We also comment on the relation of the used CP transformations to the automorphisms of Delta (3 n^2) and Delta (6 n^2)

Review of Trajectories of Empire: Transhispanic Reflections on the African Diaspora. Vanderbilt UP, 2022, edited by Jerome C. Branche.

Trajectories of Empire: Transhispanic Reflections on the African Diaspora, edited by Jerome Branche, is an interdisciplinary research work that provides a better understanding of the presence of Africans in the Iberian Peninsula and the Ibero-American empire. The book is an effective reading of the journey and settlement of Africans in the Iberian Peninsula from the fifteen-century as well as their living conditions in Cuba and Brazil. From enslaved and freed individual to swordsman, leaders and venerable, afrodescendant experiences are not monolithic nor homogeneous but diverse and multidimensional. By using case studies in their research papers, the authors personalize human experiences at a microlevel and show how different aspects of an afrodescendant's life are related to and also different from each other. This method is also a way of relativizing general assumptions that might not correspond to individual context

Relationship between psychological empowerment, physical activity enjoyment, and response to a HIIT Program in physically inactive young women: a prospective multicentre study

    Get PDF
Background This study aimed to investigate the relationship of psychological empowerment and enjoyment of physical activity with changes in physical activity levels, sleep quality, and muscular endurance following a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program in physically inactive young women. Methods A total of 61 physically inactive young women (age: 20.1 ± 2.7 y) were recruited to participate in a six-month HIIT intervention delivered via a smartphone app. Outcome measures included physical activity levels (MET-min/week), muscular endurance (plank test), and sleep quality through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Healthy Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire (HLPCQ) and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) were used to assess psychological empowerment and enjoyment, respectively. Repeated measures ANOVA and covariate analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of the intervention and the role of psychological empowerment and enjoyment. Results At 6 months, significant improvements in physical activity (p  0.05). Conclusion Enjoyment plays a crucial role in the response to HIIT programs among physically inactive young women, particularly in improving weekly physical activity levels. Psychological training showed no significant relationship with the outcomes studied

The challenge of science in the face of polarization around recreational hunting and wildlife management.

Science is currently confronting a loss of prestige in the face of the proliferation of subjective 'truths'. In a world saturated with information, verifiable facts are giving way to personal and collective beliefs that are amplified by biases in the media and on social networks. This undermines confidence in the scientific method and encourages disinformation and social polarization, all of which weaken constructive dialogue among sectors on many key issues. One emblematic case of this disconnection between science and social perception is recreational hunting. This activity is seen by some as essential for conservation, while others view it as harmful and obsolete. Wildlife science is often instrumentalized or delegitimized by both extremes, thus perpetuating a harmful cycle of mistrust and confrontation. In this perspective paper we highlight how this phenomenon reflects a greater problem: the challenge of reconciling science with an increasingly fragmented society that is polarized by post-truth

    Get PDF
