    Get PDF

What does a presentist see when she looks at photographs of dead relatives?

The objective of this paper is to bring to the foreground some metaphysical commitments present in the debate about the relation between photography and the past. I will try to answer the question: what does a presentist see when she looks at photographs of dead relatives? According to presentism, if a particular object does not exist in the present, it does not exist simpliciter. For this reason, in Priorian presentism, there can be no de re (singular) propositions about past particulars. Part of the requirement for singularity would be played by reality, which suffers metaphysical restrictions from the passage of time. After outlining the metaphysical and semantical debate about presentism, I will briefly explore some theories of photography and separate them in two groups: de re theories that accept that through photography we indirectly perceive the past object itself and de dicto theories that deny it. Then, I will connect those theories to the problem faced by presentism, showing that a presentist must limit herself, in the case of objects that no longer presently exist, to a de dicto approach of photography. In other words, a presentist cannot accept that through photography she can indirectly see the past object itself. There would be nothing in the past for her to be remotely acquainted with or to demonstratively single out. I attempt to develop a presentist theory that could account for the descriptive and causal referential elements of photography using John Zeimbekis’ theory coupled with Craig Bourne’s presentist causal theory of reference (that jettison the Millian element of the causal theory). I will show how this theory is different from Kendall Walton’s counterfactual theory (also accepted by Dominic Lopes) and explore a criticism that could be formulated from his perspective

Fourier transform infrared investigation of dielectric and lattice dynamical properties of CuAlO2 delafossite under high pressure

    Get PDF
This paper reports an investigation of the pressure dependence of lattice-dynamical and dielectric properties of CuAlO2 delafossite by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The availability of single-crystal and powdered samples allowed for an almost complete characterization of the pressure behavior of polar phonons and dielectric function from the far-infrared to the near-ultraviolet spectral range. The pressure-induced increase of the electronic contribution to the dielectric constant for polarization perpendicular to the axis is fully accounted for by volume reduction, showing that the electronic polarizability remains virtually constant under pressure. The behavior of the polar phonon contribution to the static dielectric constant is more complex. The contribution of the high-frequency ℎ,TO mode (489 c⁢m−1), with positive pressure coefficient, slightly decreases under pressure. On the opposite, the contribution of the low-frequency ,TO mode (143 c⁢m−1 at ambient pressure) largely increases as it becomes softer under pressure, leading to an overall increase of the static dielectric constant. For polarization parallel to the axis, the electronic contribution is insensitive to pressure. The polar mode 2⁢,ℎ TO (700 c⁢m−1) has positive pressure coefficient. Then, an overall decrease of the static dielectric constant for polarization parallel to the axis is expected

Women, Water, and the Climate Emergency: Art and Science for Bringing Ecofeminism to Society

    No full text
The climate emergency caused by humans is associated with more frequent and extreme heat waves, droughts, and floods. Moreover, humans also increase localized water pollution. Together, these changes negatively affect ecosystems, people, and infrastructure (Gills and Morgan 2020; IPCC 2023). Specifically, freshwater ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, and wetlands, have suffered serious declines in water quality, habitat degradation, and damage to their biodiversity, structure, and functioning (IPBES 2019)

On the Semantics of Kant’s Concept of Substance

    Get PDF
This paper examines the debate about the referential meaning of Kant’s concept of substance. In the Critique of Pure Reason and other works such as the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science, the category or concept of substance appears quite uncontroversially to have both a logical meaning (by which it means roughly ‘a thing that is the ultimate subject of predication’) and an objective meaning (by which it means roughly ‘a thing that is permanent’, or, equivalently, ‘a thing existing at all times’). However, it is highly contested what kind of object, or objects, are supposed to meet, in experience, the criteria imposed by the conjunction of these two distinct meanings. I discuss two examples of the main interpretations to be found in the literature (Peter Strawson’s, 2000, who thinks that the reference of substance is only matter, and Claudia Jáuregui’s, 2021, who also counts ordinary particular objects as substances) and scrutinize their fit with some of the textual evidence, primarily from the First Analogy of Experience
