Cultural capital, black holes, and the hidden curriculum: an analysis of grade repetition in Spain
Get PDFIn this article I explain the contradiction between the averagely high and equitable scores that Spanish students obtained in the last three editions (2015, 2018, and 2022) of the Program for International Student Assessment, and Spain's extremely high and unequitable rate of grade repetition in schools. After ruling out alternative explanations for this discrepancy, I explore the hypothesis that grade repetition in Spain is an effect of the hidden curriculum. Methodologically speaking, my explanation establishes analogies with Einstein's theory of relativity and draws on its spatial topoi to conceptualize the difference between the official and the hidden curriculum and the undemocratic conflation between upper- and middle-class cultural capital and academic skills. This conflation, I argue, lies behind said contradiction between Spanish students' scores in PISA and the rates of grade repetition in Spain
En la periferia de las estéticas de lo virtual. Un análisis de la integración del cuerpo en la poética digital de Charlotte Davies
No full textEl principal objetivo de este artículo consiste en arrojar una nueva mirada a las estéticas de la realidad virtual (RV) de los años 90. La finalidad es doble: por un lado, fijaremos las características distintivas de las estéticas virtuales dominantes durante este periodo. En segundo lugar, y tras constatar dificultades y carencias de las narrativas dominantes en lo relativo al tratamiento de la materia y el cuerpo, realizaremos un análisis de la poética digital de la artista Charlotte Davies. Las propuestas de realidad virtual que lleva a cabo esta artista canadiense entre 1995 y 1998 constituyen una estética digital alternativa en la que dichas carencias quedan, si no resueltas, al menos acometidas desde una perspectiva integradora. El motivo que nos ha conducido a la elaboración de este estudio tiene que ver con el renovado interés que la RV lleva despertando desde mediados de la década de 2010 en los ámbitos del entretenimiento digital y el arte con nuevas tecnologías
La política de becas educativas del franquismo (1939-1970)
No full textLos programas de becas fueron durante mucho tiempo extremadamente débiles en el sistema educativo español. Esta investigación estudia cómo los planteó el franquismo, centrándonos en las intervenciones en los itinerarios de los bachilleratos general y laboral y de la formación profesional industrial entre 1939 y 1970. Para ello hemos partido de la localización de fuentes documentales primarias -entre otras, legislación, informes y memorias- la mayoría inéditas, para posteriormente analizarlas siguiendo la metodología histórico-educativa. Se ha realizado especial hincapié en la triangulación de los datos y la contextualización de las referencias en los ámbitos, educativo, social y político. Entre las aportaciones más destacadas cabe señalar la identificación de dos etapas bien definidas. Una primera con escasísimas intervenciones. La segunda, a partir de comienzos de la década de 1950 en que comenzó a impulsarse las becas como mecanismo para ampliar las tasas de escolarización, y que se intensificó exponencialmente en 1961 con la creación del Fondo para la Igualdad de Oportunidades. El presupuesto pasó de 95,5 millones de pesetas en 1960 a 2.400 siete años después y los becarios, que en 1946 rondaba el millar, se acercaban a los 150.000 en 1966. De ese modo, el programa de becas cobró una importancia creciente. Este se concibió con un enfoque proactivo y estrictamente meritocrático, exclusivamente para estudiantes con escasos recursos y con notoria capacidad y vocación para los estudios. Fue rediseñado y apoyado por los sectores reformistas del régimen y buscó alcanzar objetivos sociales, culturales y políticos, siendo publicitado como uno de los logros más importantes. Su contribución a la actualización y modernización del franquismo fue notable y siempre estuvo al servicio de su pervivencia, sin cuestionarlo como modelo político
Long term effects of peripubertal stress on the thalamic reticular nucleus of female and male mice.
Get PDFAdverse experiences during infancy and adolescence have an important and enduring effect on the brain and are predisposing factors for mental disorders, particularly major depression. This impact is particularly notable in regions with protracted development, such as the prefrontal cortex. The inhibitory neurons of this cortical region are altered by peripubertal stress (PPS), particularly in female mice. In this study we have explored whether the inhibitory circuits of the thalamus are impacted by PPS in male and female mice. This diencephalic structure, as the prefrontal cortex, also completes its development during postnatal life and is affected by adverse experiences. The long-term changes induced by PPS were exclusively found in adult female mice. We have found that PPS increases depressive-like behavior and induces changes in parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) cells of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). We observed reductions in the volume of the TRN, together with those of parameters related to structures/molecules that regulate the plasticity and connectivity of PV+ cells: perineuronal nets, matricellular structures surrounding PV+ neurons, and the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). The expression of the GluN1, but not of GluN2C, NMDA receptor subunit was augmented in the TRN after PPS. An increase in the fluorescence intensity of PV+ puncta was also observed in the synaptic output of TRN neurons in the lateral posterior thalamic nucleus. These results demonstrate that the inhibitory circuits of the thalamus, as those of the prefrontal cortex, are vulnerable to the effects of aversive experiences during early life, particularly in females. This vulnerability is probably related to the protracted development of the TRN and might contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders
Fostering Worker Participation in Companies: Insights from a Multi- Stakeholder Study in the Basque Autonomous Community
Get PDFThe aim of this article is to identify the factors hindering and those favouring participatory business models in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC). Specifically, the study was carried out using the Delphi method, drawing on the expert opinion of 20 people from the business, trade union and academic spheres. The results of the study indicate that various cultural, structural, organisational and economic factors hinder the development of worker participation in companies. With regard to the strategies that should be implemented by the different stakeholders to promote participatory business models, consensus was reached on so-called “soft measures” and on the necessary institutional support for their promotion and implementation. On the other hand, the disagreements revealed in the study reflect different sensitivities regarding the role that both the state and trade unions should play in the development of participatory models, as well as the scope of participation in companies. The findings of the research provide elements for a more completed and informed debate on worker participation in companies. Based on the information obtained, the study aims to provide a basis for guiding public policies, business initiatives and trade union actions for the promotion of participatory companies, which would contribute to the advancement of worker participation
Morphometric differences in sperm subpopulations in frozen-thawed semen of two bovine subspecies
Get PDF[Objetive] The objective was to characterize different sperm subpopulations based on morphometric parameters of frozen-thawed semen in two bovine subspecies using a CASA system. [Methodology]The experiment was carried out at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology from May to December 2023. Spermatozoa from 10 bulls (five animals of each subspecies, Bos taurus and Bos indicus) were evaluated after thawing of the semen doses by an ISAS® v1, Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA)-Morph system. Sub-populations of head morphometric spermatozoa were characterized using multivariate procedures such as principal components (PCs) analysis and clustering methods (k-means model). [Results] The ejaculate of male exhibits significant heterogeneity and comprises diverse sperm subpopulations with differing morphometric patterns. Three different sperm subpopulations were identified from three PCs: head size, head shape, and symmetry of the sperm head and the degree to which it was pyriform. The proportions of the different sperm subpopulations varied in the two-bovine subspecies; Bos taurus and Bos indicus. Results indicated that subpopulations SP1, SP2, and SP3 were different for PC criteria and these differences were relevant. The variability in sperm morphometry assessments underscores the need to standardize semen evaluation protocols. [Conclusions] These findings highlight the importance of knowing the diversity in sperm morphometry between subspecies to both improve in vitro evaluation tests and to distinguish subspecies
