    No full text
The linguistic landscape (LL) is an excellent teaching tool for students entering language immersion programs and has a notable positive impact on their learning process, while facilitating the integration of the content worked on in class with the immediate reality of the urban spaces in which they are staying. Furthermore, its use in the classroom, through the development of thematic teaching sequences, is an innovative and motivating element that breaks down the walls of the classroom to transfer the learning process to the streets of the city and allows students to construct knowledge from an experiential perspective. This paper presents an example of the practical application of the creation of linguistic landscapes of the city of Valencia, developed within the framework of a program for American students at the University of Valencia

Cation-Induced Structural Diversity in the Cobalt(II)/Nitranilato System: A Monomer, a Dimer, a Trimer and a Chain

    Get PDF
Herein, we show how it is possible to prepare a monomer, a dimer, a trimer and a chain with cobalt(II) and the ligand nitranilato (3,6-dinitro-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion = C6O4(NO2)22− = NA2−) by simply changing the counter-cations. Thus, we show that when we combine the ligand NA2− with cobalt(II) in the presence of a bulky cation as PPh4+, we obtain compound (PPh4)4[Co(NA)3] (1), which contains the first monomeric anion of the type [Co(L)3]4− (L = any anilato ligand). With a smaller cation as NMe4+, we obtain (NMe4)2[Co2(NA)3(H2O)4] (2), a rare example of anilato-containing dimer based on a transition metal (TM). With a larger cation as NPr4+, we obtain a trinuclear cobalt−nitranilato complex formulated as (NPr4)2[Co3(NA)4(H2O)6] (3) and finally, when using the small NH4+ cation, we obtain the neutral chain: [Co(NA)(H2O)2 (4). This work presents the synthesis and structure of these compounds and the magnetic characterization of compounds 2−4 that show the presence of very weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt centers through the anilato bridge

CCL27-CCR10 and CXCL12-CXCR4 chemokine ligand-receptor mRNA expression ratio: new predictive factors of tumor progression in cutaneous malignant melanoma

    No full text
CXCR4, CCR7 and CCR10 chemokine receptors are known to be involved in melanoma metastasis. Our goal was to compare the relative intratumoral mRNA expression of these receptors with that of their corresponding chemokine ligands, CXCL12, CCL19, CCL21, and CCL27 across the full spectrum of human melanoma progression: thin and thick primary melanomas, as well as 'in transit', lymph node, and distant metastases. Expression was quantified by real-time RT-PCR in 103 melanoma samples: 51 primary tumors and 52 metastases. Particular emphasis was focused on chemokine ligand-receptor expression ratios. Immunohistochemistry was performed to identify the cell types expressing these molecules. CXCL12-CXCR4 and CCL27-CCR10 ratios were higher in thin than in thick primary melanomas, and all four chemokine-receptor ratios were higher in primary tumors than in melanoma metastases. CCL27-CCR10 and CXCL12-CXCR4 expression ratios in primary tumors were inversely associated with the development of distant metastases, and improved the predictive value of tumor thickness for distant metastasis, which is important since chemokine ligand-receptor ratios are not affected by the endogenous gene employed for normalizing mRNA expression. Both receptor and ligand immunolabeling were detected in neoplastic cells suggesting autocrine mechanisms. Our results support the concept that low CCL27/CCR10 and CXCL12/CXCR4 intratumoral mRNA ratios are associated with melanoma progression, and in combination with Breslow thickness, are the best predictive factors for the development of distant metastases in primary cutaneous melanoma

    Leibniz and Kant on God

Is Immanuel Kant’s critique of the proofs of God’s existence accurate? In order to answer this question, I analyse Leibniz’ proof in his “Monadology” and I determine the relation between the cosmological and the ontological version of this proof. Since Kant often refers (implicitly) to Leibniz’ argument, I examine Kant’s critique of rational theology in the Critique of Pure Reason in the light of Leibniz’ strategy. Kant’s critique of Leibniz’ argument is partly biased by his own concept of “transcendental idealism” and fails to reject it. On the other hand, many questions in Leibniz’ attempt remain still open

Clinical manifestations in the maxillofacial region of acute crisis of sickle cell anemia:: a case report

    Get PDF
Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease, is a hematologic condition commonly found in populations from the Middle East, India, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. One of its complications is the development of long bone osteomyelitis. However, mandibular bone involvement is rare, which makes early diagnosis of this disease difficult when it affects this anatomical region. In this article, we present the case of a 25-year-old male with a prior diagnosis of sickle cell anemia who developed mandibular osteomyelitis associated with a paramandibular abscess and ipsilateral temporomandibular joint involvement, which was diagnosed and treated medically and surgically. Through this case, we aim to provide clinical insight into mandibular infectious complications associated with sickle cell anemia, along with their diagnosis and therapeutic management. Multidisciplinary care, clinical evaluation, laboratory findings, and imaging studies are the main pillars for the management of this disease. Furthermore, we review the literature on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of mandibular osteomyelitis in patients with sickle cell disease

Physical Education teaching competencies assessed with observational instruments in randomised studies: a systematic review.

Direct observation has been used as a method to analyse teacher practices in Physical Education for years. Although some systematic reviews have focused on the role of teachers in Physical Education, none of them have centredon the observation instruments used to assess teaching competencies. Objective: This systematic review aims to analyse the observational instruments used to assess teaching competencies in Physical Education, identify the competencies that they include, and examine observation methods and observer training processes in papers which useda randomised sample.Methodology: The PRISMA protocol was followed, and the search yielded 783 articles. Inclusion criteria were related to the appearance of the competencies, the use of observational instruments, and the randomization of the sample. Results: Seven papers exceeded the inclusion criteria. The most common teaching competence was providingfeedback to students, but others such aslesson management, studentinvolvement, or the use ofinformative language were found. The studies used various observational instruments for the evaluation of teaching competencies.Discussion: The analysis of the observation tools revealed a variety of approaches, none of whichattempted to provide a comprehensive analysis of teaching competencies in Physical Education. Conclusions: We emphasize the need to develop an observational instrument to assess the essential teaching competencies that Physical Education teachers should posses

Paraná ra’anga. La perforación anfibia del paisaje

    Get PDF
