An alternative simple approach to estimate atmospheric correction in multitemporal studies

    No full text
Studies that use multitemporal images require the conversion of original digital data into the corresponding physical magnitudes. Atmospheric correction is one of the most important steps in this process, which is usually undertaken using atmospheric radiative transfer models. The main difficulty in these models is the need of atmospheric input data which are not usually available. An alternative approach to atmospheric correction is proposed in this Letter. It is based on the idea that the atmospheric effects over two or more dates can be determined in a relative way, by using the apparent reflectance values of surfaces whose ground reflectance can be considered unchangeable with time. This method has been applied to correct Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper images and satisfactory results have been obtained in comparison with those obtained by a traditional model

Risk factors for PPCs in laparoscopic non---robotic vs. laparoscopic robotic abdominal surgery (LapRas): rationale and protocol for a patient---level analysis of LAS VEGAS and AVATaR

    No full text
Introduction: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) vary amongst different surgical techniques. We aim to compare the incidence of PPCs after laparoscopic non-robotic versus laparoscopic robotic abdominal surgery. Methods and analysis: LapRas (Risk Factors for PPCs in Laparoscopic Non-robotic vs Laparoscopic robotic abdominal surgery) incorporates harmonized data from 2 observational studies on abdominal surgery patients and PPCs: 'Local ASsessment of VEntilatory management during General Anaesthesia for Surgery' (LAS VEGAS), and 'Assessment of Ventilation during general AnesThesia for Robotic surgery' (AVATaR). The primary endpoint is the occurrence of one or more PPCs in the first five postoperative days. Secondary endpoints include the occurrence of each individual PPC, hospital length of stay and in-hospital mortality. Logistic regression models will be used to identify risk factors for PPCs in laparoscopic non-robotic versus laparoscopic robotic abdominal surgery. We will investigate whether differences in the occurrence of PPCs between the two groups are driven by differences in duration of anesthesia and/or the intensity of mechanical ventilation. Ethics and dissemination: This analysis will address a clinically relevant research question comparing laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery. No additional ethical committee approval is required for this metanalysis. Data will be shared with the scientific community by abstracts and original articles submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Registration: The registration of this post-hoc analysis is pending; individual studies that were merged into the used database were registered at clinicaltrials.gov: LAS VEGAS with identifier NCT01601223, AVATaR with identifier NCT02989415

    No full text
Objective To assess the intraobserver reliability of Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRA) measurement by ultrasonography during four specific abdominopelvic exercises, evaluating interrecti distance, Linea Alba (LA) thickness, and distortion index in parous women. Methods Fifty-four parous women were assessed using ultrasound imaging for the LA. Four exercises were evaluated: crunch, abdominal drawing-in maneuver, pelvic floor muscle contraction, and one exercise based on the de Gasquet Method. Each exercise was performed three times. The ultrasound probe was placed 3 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus. Interrecti distance (IRD), distortion index, and LA thickness were measured and analyzed using ImageJ software by independent researchers. Intraobserver reliability was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with a 95% confidence interval. Results ICC values for the IRD ranged from 0.84 to 0.99 for the four exercises. The distortion index showed moderate to high reliability (ICC: 0.77-0.98), while LA thickness also demonstrated moderate to high reliability (ICC: 0.75-0.98). Conclusion The results demonstrate the reliability of ultrasound in measuring key parameters, including LA thickness, distortion, and IRD in women with DRA during various exercises. As a non-invasive tool, it supports evidence-based interventions in postpartum recovery and clinical practice

Morphological Variations of the Anterior Cerebral Artery: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of 85,316 Patients

    No full text
Background: The anterior cerebral artery (ACA), a critical component of the cerebral arterial circle, exhibits substantial morphological variability. While previous studies have explored ACA morphology using cadaveric and imaging methods, a comprehensive meta-analysis incorporating the latest evidence is lacking. Methods: Following current guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed across four major databases, supplemented by the gray literature and targeted journal searches. Ninety-nine studies, encompassing 85,316 patients, met the inclusion criteria. Statistical analyses were conducted using R, applying random effects models to estimate pooled prevalence and morphometric parameters. Results: The pooled prevalence of typical ACA morphology was 93.75%, whereas variants were noted in 6.25% of cases. The predominant variation identified was the accessory ACA (aACA) (1.99%), followed by unilateral absence of the A1 segment (1.78%), with the latter being more frequently recognized in imaging studies (p < 0.0001). Rare variants encompassed azygos ACA (azACA) (0.22%), fenestrated ACA (fACA) (0.02%), and bihemispheric ACA (bACA) (0.02%). The mean diameter and length of the A1 segment were measured at 2.10 mm and 14.24 mm, respectively. Hypoplasia of the A1 segment (<1 mm diameter) was recorded in 3.15% of cases. The influences of imaging modality, laterality, and population distribution on prevalence estimates were minimal. No significant publication bias was detected. Conclusions: Although infrequent, variants of the ACA possess significant clinical importance attributable to their correlation with aneurysm formation and the impairment of collateral circulation. The aACA and the absence of the A1 segment emerged as the most common variations. This meta-analysis presents an updated and high-quality synthesis of ACA morphology, serving as a valuable reference for clinicians and anatomists

Enhancing emotional intelligence at school: Evaluation of the effectiveness of a two-year intervention program in Spanish pre-adolescents

    No full text
THe objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-year intervention program to promote emotional intelligence (EI) at school. Participants were 228 primary school pupils between 10 and 11 years old. This study evaluated the effects of the intervention using a pre- and post-experimental design with a control group and four evaluation moments. EI was assessed with the EQ-i:YV questionnaire by Bar-On and Parker (2000), adapted to Spanish by Ferrándiz, Hernández, Bermejo, Ferrando, and Sáinz (2012). The results showed the effectiveness of the intervention, highlighting an increase in all the EI dimensions of the Bar-On model: intrapersonal, interpersonal, stress management, adaptability, and general mood. These findings suggest that EI can be improved. Results are discussed, and recommendations are made for future implementatio

Gender identity stories: Experiences and perspectives of transgender people about healthcare system in Spain

    No full text
Background. Despite legal advances and the depathologization of transgender identities, transgender individuals still face significant barriers and discrimination within healthcare systems. A pervasive lack of training in gender diversity among healthcare professionals often results in uncomfortable, even hostile, clinical encounters, exacerbating physical and mental health vulnerabilities. Consequently, fear of stigma and discrimination leads many transgender people to avoid seeking care, placing their wellbeing at further risk due to delayed or foregone medical attention. Objectives. To explore transgender individuals' perceptions of healthcare professionals' awareness and responsiveness to their care and support needs in the Valencian Community (Spain). Materials and methods. We conducted a descriptive qualitative study with a phenomenological approach in the Valencian Community. Using convenience sampling, we recruited 14 participants. Data were collected between April and June 2022 via in-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews. The study comprised 2 sequential phases: An initial focus group session, followed by individual interviews conducted using a snowball sampling technique. Results. We identified 3 thematic domains: T1: Experiences of professional care among transgender individuals; T2: Impact of cisgender-centric regulations within the healthcare system; T3: Gender diversity education needs for healthcare professionals. Conclusions. The transformation of the health system is urgent to ensure inclusive and equitable care for transgender people. According to the interviews, they consider that better training of professionals will improve their care. In addition, they highlight the need to reduce bureaucratic barriers, create specific protocols, and improve access to specialized treatment. Implementing inclusive public policies will contribute to a fairer and more accessible system. Key words: qualitative research, social determinants of health, transgender, health disparities, gender diversit

    No full text
Congenital plasminogen (PLG) deficiency is an exceptionally uncommon hereditary disease associated with biallelic pathogenic / likely pathogenic variants in the PLG gene. Ligneous periodontitis (LP) is a rare disorder that can occur as a result of a lack of plasminogen. It is defined by the presence of lobulated, membranous, and ulcerated masses in the gums, as well as significant damage to the surrounding bone. This case report presents the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up outcomes of a 23-year-old male patient who referred to our clinic with a complaint of widespread gingival enlargement. We identified a novel c.2087G>C (p.Arg696Pro) variant with a known variant detected in a compound heterozygous state in PLG confirming the molecular etiology. This case report emphasizes the importance of dentists identifying oral manifestations of various systemic diseases. Careful examination of such findings and the timely referral of patients to appropriate specialists for diagnosis and treatment are of critical significance

Lógica y retórica en los debates contemporáneos sobre la existencia de Dios

    No full text
