Red Listing lichenized fungi: best practices and future prospects
According to International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines, all species must be assessed against all criteria during the Red Listing process. For organismal groups that are diverse and understudied, assessors face considerable challenges in assembling evidence due to difficulty in applying definitions of key terms used in the guidelines. Challenges also arise because of uncertainty in population sizes (Criteria A, C, D) and distributions (Criteria A2/3/4c, B). Lichens, which are often small, difficult to identify, or overlooked during biodiversity inventories, are one such group for which specific difficulties arise in applying Red List criteria. Here, we offer approaches and examples that address challenges in completing Red List assessments for lichens in a rapidly changing arena of data availability and analysis strategies. While assessors still contend with far from perfect information about individual species, we propose practical solutions for completing robust assessments given the currently available knowledge of individual lichen life-histories
Surrogacy in Spain. Is it really forbidden?
Surrogacy contracts are declared to be null and void in Spain by Law 14/2006, but this rule does not prevent the access to this practice in countries having accepted it from a substantive point of view. Spaniards are travelling abroad to satisfy their desire to become parents through surrogacy and this reality has generated problems that the authorities have had to deal with in the absence of a legal regime covering cross-border cases. The existing administrative doctrine and the case law of Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, have not provided for uniform criteria for addressing situations that are being granted efficacy in Spain while at the same time are raising serious human rights concerns. The purpose of this paper is to examine the current situation in this matter, with the main objective of answering this question:Is surrogacy really forbidden in Spain
Delayed maturation and migration of excitatory neurons in the juvenile mouse paralaminar amygdala
The human amygdala paralaminar nucleus (PL) contains many immature excitatory neurons that undergo prolonged maturation from birth to adulthood. We describe a previously unidentified homologous PL region in mice which contains immature excitatory neurons and has previously been considered part of the amygdala intercalated cell clusters or ventral endopiriform cortex. Mouse PL neurons are born embryonically, not from postnatal neurogenesis, despite a subset retaining immature molecular and morphological features in adults. During juvenile-adolescent ages (P21-P35), the majority of PL neurons undergo molecular, structural, and physiological maturation and a subset of excitatory PL neurons migrate into the adjacent endopiriform cortex. Alongside these changes, PL neurons develop responses to aversive and appetitive olfactory stimuli. The presence of this homologous region in both humans and mice points to the significance of this conserved mechanism of neuronal maturation and migration during adolescence, a key time period for amygdala circuit maturation and related behavioral changes
Performance of the Roche Elecsys® IGRA SARS-CoV-2 test for the detection and quantification of virus-reactive T cells in COVID-19-vaccinated immunosuppressed patients and healthy subjects
Purpose: Comparing the performance of commercially available SARS-CoV-2 T-cell immunoassay responses may provide useful information for future observational or intervention studies as well as to their potential customers. Method: Whole blood was collected from a total of 183 subjects fully vaccinated against COVID-19: 55 healthy controls (Group 1), 50 hematological patients (Group 2), 50 chronic kidney disease patients (Group 3), and 28 elderly nursing home residents (Group 4). Samples were tested with the Roche Elecsys® IGRA (Interferon-gamma release assay) SARS-CoV-2 test (Roche Diagnostics, Rotkreuz, Switzerland), the Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2 test (Euroimmun, Lubeck, Germany), the SARS-CoV-2 T Cell Analysis Kit (Miltenyi Biotec, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany), and a flow-cytometry for intracellular cytokine (IFN-γ) staining-based immunoassay (FC-ICS). Results: Overall, the Roche Elecsys® assay returned the highest number of positive results (151/179; 84.3%), followed by the Euroimmun test (127/183; 69%), and the FC-ICS (135/179; 75%). The Kappa coefficient of agreement was best between IGRAs (0.64). Most discordant results across assays involved patients from Group 2. Overall, IFN-γ concentrations measured by both IGRAs correlated strongly (rho = 0.78; 95% CI 0.71-0.84; P < 0.001) irrespective of the study group. The frequencies of SARS-CoV-2-reactive IFN-γ T cells and IFN-γ concentrations measured by the IGRAs correlated moderately for CD4+ T cells, however, weakly for CD8+ T cells. SARS-CoV-2-experienced participants displayed stronger responses than SARS-CoV-2-naïve when IGRAs, rather than FC-ICS, were used. Conclusion: The SARS-CoV-2 immunoassays evaluated in the present study did not return interchangeable qualitative or quantitative results either in seemingly healthy individuals or in immunosuppressed patients
Is periodontitis a risk factor for ischemic stroke?: systematic review and meta-analysis
Evidence suggests an association between periodontitis and ischemic stroke due to the elevated production of inflammatory markers and damage by infectious agents, which would promote a recurrent prothrombotic state. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to determine whether periodontitis is a risk factor for ischemic stroke.A systematic search was conducted in five databases, including cohort and case-control studies published up to April 2024, in which periodontitis was evaluated as a risk factor for ischemic stroke through relative risk (RR), hazard ratio (HR) and odds ratio (OR). The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the risk of bias, and the GRADE system was used to determine the certainty of the evidence.Of the 1121 studies found, 16 were included in the qualitative analysis, and 10 were meta-analyzed. The global synthesis showed that periodontitis was a risk factor for ischemic stroke (OR=2.59, I2=96%), with the same result being found for the case-control subgroup (OR=3.44, I²=73%) and the cohort subgroup (OR=2.05, I²=99%). Individuals with periodontitis were also found to be more likely to develop lacunar infarcts (OR=5.00, I2=0%).Periodontitis is a risk factor for ischemic stroke with very low certainty of evidence and high heterogeneity. Furthermore, individuals with periodontitis were more likely to develop lacunar infarcts, with moderate certainty of evidence and null heterogeneity

Autologous bone harvested during implant bed preparation: A randomized clinical trial comparing high-speed drilling with irrigation versus low-speed drilling without irrigation
Objective: To compare collected bone weight and the frequency of autologous bone harvesting from the flutes of surgical drills used for implant bed preparation using two different drilling techniques. A comparative evaluation of radiographic bone density and bone quality was also made. Materials and Methods: A randomized clinical trial was made of 66 dental implants in patients with a single posterior edentulous site. The compared drilling techniques were high-speed drilling with irrigation (control group) and low-speed drilling without irrigation (test group). The bone collected in both groups was dried and weighed with a precise electronic balance. The frequency of harvesting was calculated. The median radiographic bone density of each implant site was measured using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) pixel values. Patient sex, age, implant position and dimensions, as well as the last drill diameter were analyzed as independent variables. The level of significance was 5%. Results: The harvesting of bone chips from drill flutes proved possible in 51.5% of the procedures in the control group and in 100% in the test group (p < 0.001). There were also statistically significant differences in bone weight between the control group (6.7 ± 10.6 mg) and the test group (41.9 ± 30.3 mg) (p < 0.001). The CBCT pixel values were directly correlated with the collected bone weight in both groups. The median radiographic bone density, arch and last drill diameter were significantly associated with harvesting bone frequency and collected bone weight (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the frequency and weight of autologous bone harvested from drills are greater with low-speed drilling without irrigation than with high-speed drilling with irrigation. Radiographic bone density, arch and last drill diameter also significantly influenced the harvesting outcomes
