    These slides were presented at a 1.5 day workshop on research data management and curation for the Northwest Five Consortium (NW5C). The NW5C is composed of Willamette University, Whitman College, University of Puget Sound, Reed College, and Lewis and Clark College. The mission of the NW5C is to enhance the student academic experience at our five liberal arts colleges through enrichment and development of faculty as teacher-scholars. Participants in the workshop included, from each university, a librarian, a faculty member, 1-2 students, and an additional person who could be from campus IT, a research technician, etc. The goal was that as a result of this workshop, research teams will: Learn to understand data curation and management as a process that is part of, and alongside, the research project lifecycle; Practice a model for librarians and researchers working together on RDMC; Learn to locate and evaluate information on best practices (and requirements) for research data management and curation (RDMC) in their domains; Appraise their own current RDMC practices; and develop and document their own practices to more efficiently plan for future projects.     FT overexpression induces precocious flowering and normal reproductive development in Eucalyptus

    Eucalyptus trees are among the most important species for industrial forestry worldwide. However, as with most forest trees, flowering does not begin for one to several years after planting which can limit the rate of conventional and molecular breeding. To speed flowering, we transformed a Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla hybrid (SP7) with a variety of constructs that enable overexpression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT). We found that FT expression led to very early flowering, with events showing floral buds within 1–5 months of transplanting to the glasshouse. The most rapid flowering was observed when the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter was used to drive the Arabidopsis thaliana FT gene (AtFT). Early flowering was also observed with AtFT overexpression from a 409S ubiquitin promoter and under heat induction conditions with Populus trichocarpa FT1 (PtFT1) under control of a heat-shock promoter. Early flowering trees grew robustly, but exhibited a highly branched phenotype compared to the strong apical dominance of nonflowering transgenic and control trees. AtFT-induced flowers were morphologically normal and produced viable pollen grains and viable self- and cross-pollinated seeds. Many self-seedlings inherited AtFT and flowered early. FT overexpression-induced flowering in Eucalyptus may be a valuable means for accelerating breeding and genetic studies as the transgene can be easily segregated away in progeny, restoring normal growth and form.This is the publisher’s final pdf.     Vein Orientation and Structural Geology of the Boulder Batholith, Mount Thompson Quadrangle, southwestern Montana By N. Mankins Abstract The Mount Thompson 7.5 Minute Quadrangle is located in the central Boulder Batholith, between the cities of Butte and Helena. The Boulder batholith is host to numerous metalliferous vein deposits, including those in the Butte District. Recent USGS (EDMAP)-funded geologic mapping at 1:24,000 scale in the Mount Thompson Quadrangle during the summer of 2016 focused on new measurements of vein and fault orientation and compilation of previous data. The orientations of vein systems observed in the Mount Thompson Quadrangle are similar to the orientations reported elsewhere in the Boulder Batholith. Most of the veins in the quadrangle shortly post-date the 76 Ma Butte Granite unit of the Boulder Batholith, and cut this unit and older rocks in the quadrangle. Two distinct vein orientations have been identified on stereonet plots: 1) massive milky-grey East-West (azimuth 98˚) quartz veins that have dips that range from 73˚ North to 72˚ South, and 2) NE-SW (azimuth 157˚) striking quartz-chalcedony veins with dip range 65˚NW-76˚SE. Vein mineralogy includes three subsets: 1) massive grey quartz 70-80% of which locally contain quartz vugs with abundant sulfides (Pyrite > Galena), 2) quartz-sulfide-poor veins 65% with chalcedony, 3) cm-scale milky quartz veins 70% with tourmaline. At the Montana Tunnels Mine a younger set of sulfide-rich (Pyrite > Sphalerite > Galena) veins, Eocene in age, cut the ~50 Ma diatreme breccia and a Lowland Creek Volcanics pyroclastic vent. The Boulder batholith veins are systematically zoned on the km scale around heat centers from high to low temperature from central tourmaline- to quartz-sulfide- to quartz-chalcedony in the periphery.Keywords: Undergraduate, Thesis, Research, Ma

    Swarm Verification Techniques

    The range of verification problems that can be solved with logic model checking tools has increased significantly in the last few decades. This increase in capability is based on algorithmic advances and new theoretical insights, but it has also benefitted from the steady increase in processing speeds and main memory sizes on standard computers. The steady increase in processing speeds, though, ended when chip-makers started redirecting their efforts to the development of multicore systems. For the near-term future, we can anticipate the appearance of systems with large numbers of CPU cores, but without matching increases in clock-speeds. We will describe a model checking strategy that can allow us to leverage this trend and that allows us to tackle significantly larger problem sizes than before.©2012 IEEE.     This is an exhibit made by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for a rule-making hearing held by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission on October 21, 1992. The hearing concerned rules regulating the commercial Dungeness crab fishery including measures to adjust timing of the season, close crabbing areas where necessary, prevent gear conflicts with other fisheries, support a tri-state limited-entry program, and establish a license moratorium. The exhibit also includes brief information about domoic acid, a shellfish toxin. Recommended changes to the Oregon Administrative Rules are given

    GDR Cinema as Commodity: Marketing DEFA Films since Unification

    For more than a decade, feature films produced by the GDR film company DEFA have been popular items in Germany. I analyze these films as commodities, arguing that this success by DEFA cinema needs to be read in conjunction with clever marketing strategies employed by the nonprofit foundation DEFA-Stiftung and the commercial home video distributor Icestorm Entertainment. Tracing some of these strategies, I show how DEFA feature films have become identifying markers that attest to a new eastern German regionalism and the reconsideration of the GDR past as part of Germany’s cultural history.This is the publisher’s final pdf.     Communication sur la stratégie du développement de la pêche dans les eaux continentales

    Le Maroc compte quelques 1000 Km de rivières salmonicoles 60.000 ha de retenues de barrages, 80 lacs colinéaires et d'importantes pêcheries d'anguille, de civelle, de palourde et de crevette. Hormis les eaux à aloses qui ont été gravement affectées par différentes formes de dégradation (déforestation, surpâturage, pollution, érosion etc...) et pour lesquelles un plan de sauvegarde a été établi, l'analyse de la situation du secteur de la pêche dans les eaux continentales révèle de grandes potentialités en raison des efforts entrepris dans les domaines de l'amélioration des ressources piscicoles et de la mobilisation des eaux de surface. Une gamme d'espèces de valeur peuple actuellement les eaux continentales grâce aux succès enregistrés au niveau des acclimatations. La stratégie poursuivie pour la valorisation de ce potentiel repose sur le développement d'une pêche sportive de qualité et une amélioration des ressources piscicoles dans les retenues de barrages et dans la partie basse des rivières par l'aquaculture. Les premiers résultats obtenus dans ce domaine ont induit la participation du secteur privé pour une mobilisation rapide de quelques 10.000 à 15.000 tonnes de poissons par an. Cet apport bon marché et de qualité peut avoir une incidence appréciable sur l'amélioration de la ration protéique de la population particulièrement en milieu rural.     This thesis is an effort to formalize and document some of the changes occuring in the Warwar Valley of Gongola State, Nigeria, West Africa. The documentation will comprise a photographic study over time accompanied by an ethnographic narrative. Information gathered from photographic images, field notes and the anthropological record will then be applied to a cultural-ecological model based on the theory of Julian Steward. The Mambilla people inhabiting the Warwar Valley are changing their traditional agricultural land use patterns and value system due to the influx of new ideas, notably the introduction of a cash economy. This cultural change has affected environmental change, observable in soil erosion

    Mat-forming “ground layers” of mosses and lichens often have functional impacts disproportionate to their biomass, and are responsible for sequestering one-third of the world's terrestrial carbon as they regulate water tables, cool soils and inhibit microbial decomposition. Without reliable assessment tools, the potential effects of climate and land use changes on these functions remain unclear; therefore, we implemented a novel “Ground Layer Indicator” method as part of the U.S.D.A. Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. Non-destructive depth and cover measurements were used to estimate biomass, carbon and nitrogen content for nine moss and lichen functional groups among eight contrasted habitat types in Pacific Northwest and subarctic U.S.A. (N  =  81 sites). Ground layer cover, volume, standing biomass, carbon content and functional group richness were greater in boreal forest and tundra habitats of Alaska compared to Oregon forest and steppe. Biomass of up to 22769 ± 2707 kg ha⁻¹ (mean ± SE) in upland Picea mariana forests was nearly double other reports, likely because our method included viable, non-photosynthetic tissues. Functional group richness, which did not directly correspond with biomass, was greatest in lowland Picea mariana forests (7.1 ± 0.4 functional groups per site). Bootstrap resampling revealed that thirty-two microplots per site were adequate for meeting data quality objectives. Here we present a non-destructive, repeatable and efficient method (sampling time: ca. 60 min per site) for gauging ground layer functions and evaluating responses to ecosystem changes.     Development and Characterization of Seven Polymorphic Microsatellite Loci in Bembidion atrocaeruleum (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

    We isolated seven polymorphic microsatellite loci from a ground beetle (Bembidion atrocaeruleum, Coleoptera, Carabidae (Stephens, 1826)) associated with naturally and regularly disturbed floodplain habitat in northwest Europe. Loci were tested on 157 individuals collected from five distinct habitat patches across two adjacent drainage basins in Wales, United Kingdom, to assess their potential for revealing population structure across a relatively short spatial extent. Alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 12. For a central representative population, expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.23 to 0.78 (mean: 0.63), and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.16 to 0.94 (mean: 0.56). Analysis of molecular variance indicated significant structure among populations, even when one locus potentially containing null alleles was removed. These loci have the potential to aid the study of dispersal mechanisms of this important riparian species along and between river corridors, a recurring question in floodplain conservation studies. In addition, given the diversity of the Bembidion genus, they may have utility in the study of sister species.This is the publisher’s final pdf.
