    Evaluation of varieties, clones, and rootstocks: II. & III. Performance of Pinot noir and Chardonnay clones : 1998-1999

    Pinot noir and Chardonnay are the two main winegrape varieties in Oregon. In 1998, they comprised approximately 59% of the Oregon winegrape acreage, and 57% of the total production for a value of $10,803,000 (62% of total) (1). Internationally, clonal selection of Pinot noir and Chardonnay have made available, for each variety, an array of clones with wide ranging levels of productivity and fruit quality. In the Champagne region, clones were selected for increased yields; in Burgundy, the main criterion was high fruit quality; and in Switzerland, the Pinot noir clone Mariafeld was selected for disease resistance. In the U. S., clones selected here and elsewhere continue to be evaluated for their suitability to local growing conditions. The Pinot noir clones included in the trial at Woodhall III Vineyard (Table 1) include representatives of diverse types loosely classified into four groups: 1) Pinot fin, typically characterized by having small clusters and prostrate growth habit; 2) Mariafeld, most noted for having loose clusters; 3) Upright, known for their erect growth habit; and 4) Fertile, typically having large clusters and prostrate growth habit (2). The Chardonnay clones at Woodhall III Vineyard (Table 2), although not as numerous as clones in the Pinot noir trial, also represent a range of types with different levels of productivity and fruit quality

    Development of Viticultural Practices to Improve Winegrape Performance : Experiment II: Effect of Canopy Location on Yield Components and Fruit Composition in Pinot noir Grapevines Trained to the Scott Henry Trellis System

    For this trial, established Pinot noir vines, located on the valley floor of the Umpqua Valley in Oregon were used. In 1996 and 1997 sixteen vines trained to the Scott Henry trellising system were separated into four different quadrants, determined by shoot orientation: Bottom canopy, shoots trained toward the ground; top canopy, shoots trained upwards; east orientation, shoots receiving the morning sunlight; and west orientation, shoots receiving afternoon sunlight. Yield components and fruit composition were measured for each quadrant. In 1996, wines were produced from fruit harvested by quadrant and subjected to sensory analysis. In 1996 the bottom canopy had higher yield, cluster weight, and titratable acidity than did the top canopy. In 1997 the top canopy had a higher yield than did the bottom canopy. In 1996 the east oriented canopy had a higher yield, cluster weight, and skin anthocyanins than did the west oriented canopy. Must soluble solids were not significantly different between vine canopy or orientation in 1996. In 1997 the west oriented canopy had higher brix, pH, and lower titratable acidity than the east oriented canopy. The bottom-east quadrant had a significantly higher yield than did the other three quadrants in 1996. There were no significant differences seen in quadrant yields in 1997. Significant differences were seen in wine attributes between the quadrants

    Bacterial seed Endophytes of Douglas-fir and their potential to confer drought tolerance

    Bacterial endophytes have the potential to confer benefits to Douglas-fir (​Pseudotsuga menziesii ​ ), for instance drought tolerance. Bacterial endophytes originating from seeds are especially important. This is because seed endophytes are more likely to be the first endophytes to get established within the young host plant. The goals of this study were to characterize the bacterial seed endophytes of Douglas-fir from the Pacific Northwest and to test whether some bacterial seed endophytes can help seedlings survive under drought conditions. Using culture-based methods, endophytes were first isolated from 8 different populations of Douglas-fir (50 seeds per population). A total of 61 bacteria were isolated from seeds. Isolates were identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA region. A total of 7 genera were identified. Overall, the composition of bacterial seed endophytes differed among Douglas-fir populations, with ​Rahnella isolated most frequently. To test the hypothesis that bacterial seed endophytes could confer drought tolerance to Douglas-fir, two populations of seedlings (WA1 and CA2) were inoculated with ​Paenibacillus ​ sp., ​Bacillus ​ sp., or sterile water for control, then grown under drought conditions. Survival analysis revealed no significant effect of bacterial seed endophyte inoculation on seedling survival under drought conditions

    Addressing ALS: Corroborating the Methodology of Studying the P2X7R Complex

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the motor cortex and spinal cord. Recent evidence suggests that the purine receptor P2X7 (P2X7R) plays a central role in the pathology of ALS. Previous research indicates that P2X7R activation by oxidatively modified heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) or Hsp90 inhibition stimulates motor neuron death. The composition of the P2X7 receptor complex, which includes Hsp90, is cell and species specific and is unknown in motor neurons. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether post-translational compositional differences in the P2X7R complex between healthy and ALS patients exist. We hypothesized that immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry would indicate that the P2X7R complex is particularly vulnerable to ligand-independent activation by Hsp90 nitration in ALS patients. Before immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry could be performed, lentivectors carrying green fluorescent protein under the regulation of the motor neuron promoter Hb9 were produced and were added to motor neurons derived from the inducible neuroprogenitor cells of ALS and healthy patients. Fluorescence in the motor neurons was observed but documented poorly and will have to be repeated. Additionally, the motor neurons died before immunoprecipitation could be performed and subsequent differentiations failed. Future research will compare mass spectrometry results of the P2X7R complex of healthy and ALS patients. If differences are found, subsequent studies should focus on constructing ligands that occupy ALS-specific P2X7R complex regions and testing their efficacy/safety against the control: healthy patients' P2X7R complex.     Needs Assessment of the Strawberry Industry

    Oregon is the number three producer of strawberries in the nation despite the fact that Oregon strawberry acreage dropped from 2,600 acres in 2005 to 2,000 acres in 2014 (Beeles, 2015; NASS, 2019, Losh, 2017). With over three billion pounds of berries grown nationally each year, strawberries are an important economic contributor to agriculture in the US (Grubinger, 2012). Nationally, strawberries have been on the rise in terms of production and value, increasing from 1.0 million tons valued at 1.2billionin2002,to1.5milliontonsvaluedat1.2 billion in 2002, to 1.5 million tons valued at 2.4 billion in 2012 (Yue, 2014). There is a growing consumer demand for a year-round supply of fresh high-quality small fruits in North America (Ballington, 2008). North American production of strawberries represents more than 25% of world production, with over 1.3 million tons of fruit being produced every year (Ballington, 2008). However, the strawberry industry in Oregon has been in a period of transition over the past few years. Strawberry acreage planted and harvested, as well as yield and production, dropped from 115 cwt in 2005 to 91 cwt in 2014 while the value per harvested acre was up overall (Beeles, 2015). While there are vast amounts of information published on the strawberry industry in California and Florida (Samtani, 2019; Wu, 2012, Bertelsen, 1995), significantly less is known about the strawberry industry in Oregon.     Presentation delivered at the annual meeting of the Oral History Association, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This talk provides an overview of strategies used to grow the oral history program at the Oregon State University Libraries Special Collections and Archives Research Center. The presentation is divided into three parts: institutional context, making one's case to create an oral history program, and tactics used to do work in a manner that will promote the growth of a program. Specific topics discussed include collection development, community engagement, donor relations, description of legacy collections, and leveraging existing resources to increase access to oral history content

    How to Train Your Yeti: A Peer-Driven Consortial Mentorship Program of Mythical Proportions

    Yetis, Cheshire cats, and phoenixes—these are all names of cohorts in the Orbis Cascade Alliance’s inaugural mentorship program. The pilot program connected nine mentors with twenty-one mentees in small groups to build community, confidence, and investment in consortium work. The initial cohort ran from 2018–2019, and the Alliance plans to continue the mentorship program as resources allow. This chapter discusses the development of the shared mentorship model, the program goals, and the successes and practical benefits that emerged from the program. We describe the training program the mentors went through and other aspects of the implementation of this mentorship project. Finally, we discuss effective strategies to improve virtual mentorship cohort sessions and successful methods for cross-institutional mentorship
