A Security Analysis of the Signal Protocol’s Group Messaging Capabilities in Comparison to Direct Messaging
Signal is a multimedia messaging application developed by OpenWhisper Systems in 2015 which allows its users to communicate securely between one another through the use of a complex encryption scheme. The set of algorithms used in combination to provide the services of the Signal application to their users is called the Signal Protocol. OpenWhisper Systems has documented the direct (or peer-to-peer)messaging capabilities of the Signal Protocol with great detail and plenty of work has been done in the security analysis of the protocol in a two-party context, as well as group contexts to some extent; however, there is still obscurity behind how the Signal Protocol implements group (or peer-to-group) messaging or and if any differences in Signal's group messaging protocol, compared to direct messaging, could result in the loss of security to any extent. In order to understand the protocol further, we developed a modified Signal application to discover how group messaging operations take place. Through this analysis we were able to discover that the Signal Protocol uses direct messaging to send group messages one at a time instead of sending one message to a server and fanning out messages to the recipients, or by using a customized protocol. Further, we claim that Signal's group messaging implementation has no negative impact on security properties provided to Signal's users, in comparison to direct messaging
The Use of Fractal-Like Bifurcating Flow Channels for Biological Targeted Cooling
In the wake of climate change, the risk of heat related illnesses has continuously increased over the past several decades. While thermal management solutions have continued to improve, there is a need for efficient cooling systems that conform with the human body. This study combines the solutions from fractal-like flow network forced convection with the conduction of heat through layers of human tissue and compares the results with an alternative, equivalent parallel flow network configuration. A steady state, two-dimensional model was generated to gauge the performance of both flow networks and the corresponding tissue temperatures that could be achieved. Utilizing water as the active fluid, the effects of varying inlet volumetric flow rates, ranging from 5 to 25 mL/s were computed. Though the baseline fractal-like network model is outperformed in total heat dissipation, it is found to achieve lower tissue temperatures and is capable of dissipating more advective heat per unit flow power at increasingly higher inlet volumetric flow rates. Although a need for further studies and optimization is established, the flow network geometry is found be suitable for the intended application.Key Words: Thermoregulation, Fractal-like Flow Network, Bioheat Transfer, Advective Heat Dissipatio
Heart Disease Knowledge, Awareness, and Perceived Risk in Oregon State University Students
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. but is often thought of as a man’s disease. Women with CVD, however, suffer poorer health outcomes due to previous education of stereotypically “male” signs and symptoms of heart attacks, despite the fact that women experience additional symptoms uncommon to men. This study examined undergraduate students’ awareness of CVD risk in America, knowledge of risk factors and signs and symptoms for both sexes, and perceived health risk of CVD. An online link to a survey was distributed to two lectures (n=50, 72% female, 28% male) of HHS 231 at Oregon State University (OSU). Analyses included correlation coefficients, independents samples t-tests, and ANOVA.
OSU students displayed low awareness of CVD risk in the U.S. (M: 3.2 out of 8), low perceived CVD health risk (M: 8.6 out of 40) and moderate to high knowledge of CVD risk factors (M: 14.6 out of 18) and MI signs and symptoms for both men and women (M: 7.3 out of 11). No statistical significance (p<0.05) was found in these variables between males and females.

This report details a collaborative effort of the Tillamook County Futures Council and Oregon State University faculty members jointly affiliated with Extension Service and the Rural Studies Program developed 50 indicators of Tillamook County: 2020 Strategic Vision in order to gain insight into the community-level definition of community vitality and to learn how close Tillamook County is to realizing the goals set forth in the vision. Estimating Nitrogen Contribution from Cover Crops on Organic Vegetable and Cane Berry Farms : Final report
The main objective of this project was to compare on-farm measurement techniques for estimating N-contributions from cover crops using 1) separated species lab tests (a standard experimental method), 2) bulked species lab tests, 3) fresh weight, 4) dry weight and 5) canopy height and density. We also recorded relative weed biomass in different cover treatments. After the project started, collaborating growers said they were interested in predicting available N from cover crops. We used a mineralization model to compare the ability to predict plant-available nitrogen (PAN) from bulked species and separated species sampling methods.

According to the U.S. Drought monitor, Central and Eastern Oregon in particular, are in severe drought. In the early 1990's, a trial was conducted to determine the yield per inch of water applied to 5 cereal species: barley, triticale, rye, wheat, and oat. All varieties received the same amount of irrigation and were harvested at late boot or soft dough growth stage. These data may help producers choose a variety and species of cereal to plant as emergency forage if irrigation water is limited

Vineyard Nutrition Study
Oregon State University researchers are expanding their study of mineral nutrition in winegrapes as part of a project sponsored by the Wine Advisory Board. Further research is justified because of increasing grower interest in nutritional factors that affect production and quality. Winegrape growers utilize Oregon State University's Plant Analysis Laboratory to an extent far greater than winegrape acreage would suggest. The industry currently ranks third in sample volume behind filberts and sweet cherries. Winegrapes deserve more attention. The goal of the new project is to develop better diagnostic services. Over the past two years, Dr. John Baham of the Department of Soil Science has been evaluating potassium fertility programs and reviewing historical plant and soil mineral analysis data from records dating back to 1975. His initial observations suggest that improvement in diagnostic services is possible. The value of petiole vs. leaf analysis is not fully resolved. Standards developed for other areas are a valuable starting point, but they could be fine tuned for the specific needs of our winegrape industry. The problem of defining optimum nutrition with regard to both yield and quality needs to be addressed
