    Carbon footprint assessment of microalgal biomass production, hydrothermal liquefaction and refining to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in mainland Portugal

    ABSTRACT: Industrial liquid effluents (e.g., from fertilizer industry) and flue gas streams (e.g., CO2-rich, from cement industry) arise as an opportunity for waste valorization. Microalgae are suitable biomass for assimilating both effluents at the cultivation stage. Under a biorefinery concept, given the urge for energy transition in the aviation sector, this research explores the transformation of a microalgae consortium grown at an industrial site in Portugal and its subsequent harvesting, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), and bio-oil refining. A life cycle assessment (LCA) approach is undertaken with two functional units (FU): 1 kg of microalgae dry-cell weight (dw) and 1 MJ of bio-jet fuel. The latter follows an attributional approach with energy allocation for comparison with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) guidelines. HTL is based on data from bench-scale experiments and literature, whereby the Petroleum Refinery Life Cycle Inventory Model (PRELIM) is used to mimic bio-oil refining. Following this approach, achieving Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) compliance requires net-zero electricity (0 gCO2eq/kWh), with an HTL bio-oil yield of 55.6 % dw (the maximum observed), a minimum refining bio-jet fuel yield of at least 16 %.     Mineral Potential Maps Angola: The first approach of data and knowledge driven prospectivity mapping in the Au-Fe region of Southern Angola [Abstract]

    RESUMEN: Los mapas de recursos minerales a escala 1:50.000 fueron realizados en la última fase del Proyecto PLANAGEO con el objetivo de evaluar el potencial mineral de la región sur de Angola. Los objetivos elegidos fueron, entre otros, las zonas que contienen Au-Fe en las áreas de Jamba-Cassinga-Tchamutete, Chipindo y Cuima-Samboto. Los mapas integraron mapas geológicos, datos magnéticos y radiométricos aéreos y resultados de FRXp de campañas de campo de PLANAGEO y yacimientos minerales conocidos. Se obtuvieron análisis univariantes, bivariantes y multivariantes y grupos de pathfinders, tales como: Factor 1 (F1)- Cd, Hg, Fe2O3, As, V, Ni de rocas en Chipindo o Factor 1(F1) - Fe2O3, As, Sn, Sb, Ta en rocas de Jamba. Esos grupos fueron identificados como pathfinders de Au, representados en los Mapas de Potencial por encima del percentil 80. En el caso de Jamba era >0,838 y el área delimitada incluía rocas BIF, rocas metavolcánicas bimodales del terreno Arcaico del Grupo Jamba.ABSTRACT: The mineral resources maps at 1:50.000 scale were made in the last phase of PLANAGEO Project with the objective of increasing mineral potential of Southern Angola. The targets chosen were the brownfields areas containing Au-Fe in Jamba-Cassinga-Tchamutete, Chipindo and Cuima-Samboto areas. The maps were produced by integrating the geological maps, airborne magnetic and radiometric data and pXRF results from PLANAGEO´s field campaigns and known mineral occurrences. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis were obtained and groups of pathfinders, such as: Factor 1 (F1)- Cd, Hg, Fe2O3, As, V, Ni from rocks in Chipindo or Factor 1(F1) - Fe2O3, As, Sn, Sb, Ta in rocks of the Jamba area. Those groups of elements were identified as Au pathfinders, represented in the Potential Maps above the 80th percentile, in the case of Jamba was >0.838 and the delimited area included BIF rocks, bimodal metavolcanic rocks of the Archean terrain of Jamba Group.N/

    Tuning cathode porosity for electrochemical reduction of CO2 at high pressure [Resumo]

    ABSTRACT: The development of active and stable catalytic cathodes is critical for advancing electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction into fuels and chemicals from Lab to market. This is a technology with a high potential to contribute to combat climate changes by using captured CO2, water and renewable energy [1]. The use of pressures higher than atmospheric pressure to carry out the co-electrolysis of CO2 and water has been recognized as an important process intensification parameter to increase productivities and energy efficiency [2]. Ongoing work addresses the preparation of aerogels by the sol gel method and impregnation with zinc and copper metallic particles to be used as cathodes for the co-electrolysis of CO2 and water to produce syngas at temperatures near room temperature and high-pressure. Ionic liquid-based electrolytes are used to increase CO2 concentration at the surface of the electrode and consequently productivities, as some ionic liquid families are known to solubilize high amounts of CO2. Aerogels have been investigated for many different applications including as catalyst supports, due to their high surface area, stability in gaseous or liquid phases, and efficient transport through large meso and macropores. The present work reports a strategy to tune the pore sizes of the catalytic electrodes by the use of reticulating agents and supercritical CO2 drying. Productivities and faradaic efficiencies of the porous materials with the different reticulating agents are compared and interpreted in respect to their surface characterization e.g. BET surface areas and morphologies determined by SEM. The potential of new aerogel-based catalytic cathodes on the efficiency of the electrochemical CO2 reduction will be discussed and its impact in fostering supercritical fluids technology through its use in processes for the mitigation of climate changes.N/

    Characterization of Tableware from Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém : Linking Analytical and Documental Research

    ABSTRACT: Fabrica de Loica de Sacavem (ca. 1858-1994) was among the first to produce white earthenware in Portugal, becoming one of the country's leading ceramic manufacturers during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Research on white earthenware has accompanied the growing interest in post-industrial archaeology but is still poorly explored compared to more ancient ceramic productions. This study focused on the ceramic body, glazes, and colourants of tableware produced by Fabrica de Loica de Sacavem during the first 50 years of its activity (1859-1910). A multi-analytical approach was selected to investigate the chemical and mineralogical composition of the ceramic body, glaze, and pigments using optical microscopy, variable-pressure scanning electron microscope energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (VP-SEM-EDS), mu-Raman spectroscopy, mu-X-ray Diffraction (mu-XRD), and reflectance spectroscopy (hyperspectral image analysis). The studied tableware was produced with a Ca-poor siliceous-aluminous white earthenware ceramic body covered with transparent alkali lead or lead borosilicate glaze, and most colourants were complex Cr-based pigments.     Mapping and understanding Earth: Open access to digital geoscience data and knowledge supports societal needs and UN sustainable development goals

    ABSTRACT: Open access to harmonised digital data describing Earth’s surface and subsurface holds immense value for society. This paper highlights the significance of open access to digital geoscience data ranging from the shallow topsoil or seabed to depths of 5 km. Such data play a pivotal role in facilitating endeavours such as renewable geoenergy solutions, resilient urban planning, supply of critical raw materials, assessment and protection of water resources, mitigation of floods and droughts, identification of suitable locations for carbon capture and storage, development of offshore wind farms, disaster risk reduction, and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. EuroGeoSurveys, the Geological Surveys of Europe, have worked diligently for over a decade to ensure open access to harmonised digital European geoscience data and knowledge through the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI). EGDI acts as a data and information resource for providing wide-ranging geoscience data and research, as this paper demonstrates through selected research data and information on four vital natural resources: geoenergy, critical raw materials, water, and soils. Importantly, it incorporates near real-time remote and in-situ monitoring data, thus constituting an invaluable up-to-date database that facilitates informed decision-making, policy implementation, sustainable resource management, the green transition, achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the envisioned future of digital twins in Earth sciences. EGDI and its thematic map viewer are tailored, continuously enhanced, and developed in collaboration with all relevant researchers and stakeholders. Its primary objective is to address societal needs by providing data for sustainable, secure, and integrated management of surface and subsurface resources, effectively establishing a geological service for Europe. We argue that open access to surface and subsurface geoscience data is crucial for an efficient green transition to a net-zero society, enabling integrated and coherent surface and subsurface spatial planning.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
