Correction to: Biomass and bioenergy potentials of bioresidues: assessment methodology development and application to the region of Lafões

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: Bioenergy research aims to uncover the potentials of biological residues. Regional-specific characterization of such potentials is needed to improve the use of local resources, decisions on bioenergy conversion routes, and services within global efforts against climate change. The definition and calculation of the theoretical and technical biomass and bioenergy potentials are keys for developing sustainable use pathways at a regional level. The present work develops a methodology where theoretical framework, quantification methods, and values for the necessary parameters, to assess regional biomass and bioenergy potentials, are considered. The region of Lafoes (Portugal) is the case study to illustrate the application of the methods, resulting in three bioresidue categories (agricultural by-products, forestry residues, and municipal waste) and two bioenergy conversion routes (biochemical and thermochemical). The biochemical conversion route revealed a technical energy potential of 765 TJ yr-1, comparing favourably with the 543 TJ yr-1 achieved by the thermochemical route. Also, the environmental and economic performances, associated with the implementation of bioenergy technologies, are possibly better achieved through the biochemical route, to be assessed through life cycle analyses and life cycle costing. Regardless of action priorities, the two conversion routes combined can potentially cover the entire current electrical energy demand of the region. This should also be appraised with expectations in mind for both flexible bioenergy services (with other renewables) and for bioenergy usage in applications which are difficult to defossilize.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Para atingir estes objetivos Cascais tornou-se um caso de estudo em dois projetos europeus, Re-Value e WeGenerate.ABSTRACT: The Municipality of Cascais has been committed to climate change mitigation, protecting the environment and re-naturalizing forests and green spaces, increasing selective collection and improving waste treatment processes and mobility, by focusing on light mobility combined with intermodal areas for the connection to public transport, like trains and the free municipal bus network (Mobi Cascais) for residents, workers and students. Aiming to reduce its carbon footprint, the municipality also intends to invest in renewable energy generation, namely by integrating photovoltaic solar energy into public buildings and buildings managed by the municipality. To achieve these goals, Cascais has become a case study in two European projects, Re-Value and WeGenerate.N/

A Double Pricing and Penalties “Separated” Imbalance Settlement Mechanism to Incentive Self Balancing of Market Parties

    No full text
ABSTRACT: Increasing penetrations of variable renewable energy sources increase the usage and costs of reserves due to their stochastic nature. As Balance Responsible Parties all market participants pay the balancing costs of their imbalances according to the imbalance settlement mechanism of each market zone. The European balancing markets and the imbalance settlement mechanisms still have different rules across Europe, but normally, the prices of upward and downward regulation are higher and lower than spot prices, respectively, originating penalties. Against this background, this work presents an alternative “Separated” imbalance settlement mechanism that consists of unbalanced parties paying/receiving directly the costs/revenues of the balancing markets needed to balance them. In this mechanism, the net costs/revenues of Transmission System Operators with energy balancing mechanisms are zero. Furthermore, by separating the payment of penalties between unbalanced directions, this mechanism also incentive unbalanced parties to self-control their dispatch, mitigating part of their deviations. Two case studies have been presented to test the application of this mechanism in Portugal and Spain, comparing its outputs with those of the mechanisms in place in these countries during 2019. Outputs from the studies prove the benefit of using this mechanism to reduce penalties, mainly in the case of active market players that can partly control their dispatch.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Chitosan doped membranes for electrochemical devices [Resumo]

    No full text
ABSTRACT: The development of new proton exchange membrane (PEM) for electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells and electrolyzers, have attracted researcher’s attention in the pursuit for more sustainable and cost-effective technologies for clean energy production, being extensive those for CO2 reduction and conversion1,2. To this end, in the present work, new modified chitosan (CS) membranes doped with ionic liquids (ILs) were developed to perform as PEM at those electrochemical devices, as an alternative to widely used commercial Nafion, with several advantages such as wider availability, lower cost, biodegradability and thermal stability. These modified membranes for use in electrochemical devices are expected to show suitably enhanced ion conductivity and also improved mechanical strength associated to a decrease in water uptake.N/

The vicinity of the several old roman gold mines could suggest a chronological approach for these materials; however, forms and typologies of the mining hammers haven’t varied much since the roman times. The absence of archaeological context or data lost in the time, allows pointing out a later chronology for these materials.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

ABSTRACT: Addressing Europe's decarbonisation challenge involves widespread deployment of nearly zero-energy buildings, deep energy renovations and renewable energy integration in the building sector. Enhancing energy efficiency in public buildings necessitates tailored solutions and strategic planning involving Local Public Administration. This work focuses on advancing insights into the application of the PrioritEE Decision Support Tool in Portuguese public buildings, highlighting the energy and financial savings and carbon dioxide emission reduction potential. Using detailed building characterisation data from energy performance certificates, we applied the tool across 22 public buildings of diverse typologies in three distinct regions of Portugal, representing various public entities. Results demonstrate the tool's adaptability, enabling a comprehensive assessment of energy performance and facilitating the exploration of customised energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions. The research emphasises the critical role of user-friendly tools in aiding policymakers and local administration technicians in meeting national renovation targets and contributing to the broader energy transition objectives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

ABSTRACT: By the end of World War II, the UK coal industry was in slow decline. It was revitalised in 1947, when it was nationalised, as the National Coal Board. The first 'Plan for Coal' and its revision were published in the 1950s. Modernising many collieries achieved an increase in coal production. Geological exploration also identified coal reserves for new deep collieries mainly in concealed measures that surrounded the existing coalfields. The Yom Kuppur war in 1973 highlighted how dependent the UK was on oil and gas from the Middle East. A balanced energy strategy was needed, that included increased coal production. The second 'Plan for Coal' was published in 1974. Geological exploration was concentrated on the concealed coalfields and the Selby mine complex, Yorkshire, was established. 'Plan2000' soon followed in 1978. It envisaged that extra coal production would be required by 2000. Exploration proved considerable coal resources, but by the end of the 1980s the use of coal was in decline and the industry was privatised. The study demonstrates how the 'Plans for Coal' increased our knowledge of coal geology and proved that the UK is indeed an 'Island of Coal.'RESUMO: No final da Segunda Guerra Mundial, a indústria de carvão do Reino Unido estava em lento declínio. A guerra do Yom Kuppur em 1973, trouxe à superfície a dependência do Reino Unido do petróleo e do gás do Médio Oriente.

    No full text

    No full text
