Portuguese geosites in the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites
RESUMO: São apresentados os geossítios portugueses que integram a lista dos Primeiros 100 Sítios de Património Geológico da IUGS. A lista resulta de um projeto patrocinado pelo IGCP-UNESCO e pela IUGS, com o objetivo de sensibilizar para a importância das estratégias de geoconservação, para a expansão do conhecimento geológico e para a proteção do património geológico com excecional valor científico e que corresponde a sítios-chave para a compreensão da história geológica do Planeta. Os três geossítios portugueses a integrar este primeiro conjunto de geossítios são as Trilobites Gigantes do Ordovícico Médio da Pedreira de Canelas, a discordância angular Carbonífero-Triássico da Ponta do Telheiro e o Vulcão dos Capelinhos. Os geossítios foram propostos e selecionados tendo em conta critérios científicos que sustentam a sua relevância internacional.ABSTRACT: The Portuguese geosites in the list of the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites are presented. The list results from a project sponsored by IGCP-UNESCO and the IUGS, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of geoconservation strategies, the expansion of geological knowledge and the protection of geoheritage with exceptional scientific value and which corresponds to key sites for the understanding of the geological history of the Planet. The three Portuguese geosites to integrate this first set of geosites are the Middle Ordovician Giant Trilobites of Canelas Quarry, the Carboniferous-Triassic Unconformity in Telheiro and the Capelinhos Volcano. The geosites were proposed and selected taking into account scientific criteria that support their global significance
The Regional Museum of Dundo and the geology and heritage of the Lunda Norte Province
RESUMO: O Museu Regional do Dundo iniciou a sua atividade em 1936 e é um dos mais importantes de Angola. As áreas mais importantes das suas coleções são a Geologia, Etnografia, Arqueologia, Zoologia e Botânica. O presente trabalho explora a importância patrimonial da geologia regional através da seleção e inventariação de sete locais de importância geológica (LIG’s), com vista à ampliação das coleções e uma integração mais completa do museu ao nível do conhecimento geológico.ABSTRACT: The Regional Museum of Dundo began its activities in 1936 and is one of the most important museums in Angola. The main areas of the museum collections are Geology, Ethnography, Archaeology, Zoology and Botany. This research focuses on the heritage importance of the regional geology through the selection the collections. The various stages of work enable the selection of seven Sites of Geological Interest, and a better integration of the museum in terms of geological knowledge

Geological Mapping of the National Geological Plan of Angola (PLANAGEO)
RESUMEN: La cartografía geológica fue la actividad central en la que se basó el Plan Nacional de Geología de Angola (PLANAGEO). Los trabajos de cartografía geológica realizados por el consorcio UTE PLANAGEO (IGME/LNEG/IIA) en el sur de Angola (476.512 km2), desarrollados entre 2016 y 2020, comprendieron 44 cartas a escala 1:250.000, 15 cartas a escala 100.000, 8 mapas de síntesis a escala 1:500.000 y 4 mapas geotemáticos a escala 1:1.000.000. A partir de estos trabajos, fueron distinguidos diversos dominios geológicos en el sur del Escudo de Angola, delimitados por macroestructuras bien definidas en los modelos geofísicos. Los mapas y sus memorias asociadas reúnen todo el conocimiento generado durante PLANAGEO, siendo un manual de referencia geológica y un modelo para futuros estudios geológico-mineros. Los mapas geológicos realizados constituyen la base de una infraestructura regional de conocimiento geológico de la región sur de Angola, y proporcionan información básica para el aprovechamiento óptimo del territorio y desarrollar el potencial de los recursos naturales del país.ABSTRACT: Geological mapping was the core activity on which the National Geological Plan of Angola (PLANAGEO) was based. The UTE PLANAGEO consortium (IGME/LNEG/IIA) conducted geological mapping works in southern Angola (476,512 km2) between 2016 and 2020. The works included 44 maps at a scale of 1:250,000, 15 maps at a scale of 100,000, 8 synthesis maps at a scale of 1:500,000, and 4 geothematic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Several geological domains were identified in the southern Angolan Shield through this work, delimited by well-defined geophysical macrostructures. The maps and associated data consolidate all PLANAGEO knowledge, making it a geological reference manual and a model for future geological and mining studies. The geological maps produced constitute the basis of a regional infrastructure of geological knowledge for the southern region of Angola. They provide basic information for the optimal use of the territory and the development of the country's natural resources
Footprint analysis of circular economy practices in the steel industry [Resumo]
ABSTRACT: Steel is one of the dominant materials in the building industry, however, substantial environmental impacts
occur in its supply chain. We evaluate the environmental performance of different steel production scenarios
at the macro level, taking into account circular economy practices. Using the dynamic life cycle assessment
methodology, different scenarios are assessed for the time horizon 2015 to 2070. The environmental
footprints are quantified in terms of primary energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, material, land and
water footprints. Forecasts regarding the availability of end-of-life steel and future demand in European and
global contexts are considered.N/
Potencial en áridos para la obra civil en Humpata (región de Lubango, Angola)
RESUMEN: En la zona de Humpata (suroeste de Angola), afloran rocas ígneas, metamórficas, vulcano-sedimentarias y carbonatadas proterozoicas. Depósitos cenozoicos de arenas, limos arcillosos y corazas ferralíticas se superponen a estas litologías (Oliveira y Lisboa, 2021). Con el objetivo de identificar materias primas minerales para áridos de obra civil para abastecer la ciudad de Lubango, se proporciona una primera
caracterización de su potencial. En cuanto a la caracterización del potencial de arenas y gravas, se estudió la mineralogía y granulometría y curvas de distribución acumulativa de muestras de arena aluvial. Las arenas analizadas son áridos finos, gruesos y de grano fino a grueso, aptos para la obra civil en mezclas bituminosas para carreteras, morteros y hormigones. Considerando la proximidad a Lubango y la accesibilidad a las materias primas, las litologías con mayor potencial para áridos de machaqueo son los granitos y las calizas dolomíticas. Se caracterizaron muestras de áridos mediante su curva granulométrica, forma de las partículas y ensayos físicos. Los resultados obtenidos son comparables a valores de áridos calizos y graníticos y muestran valores adecuados para su uso en las aplicaciones más frecuentes.ABSTRACT: In the Humpata area (southwest Angola), Proterozoic igneous, metamorphic, volcano-sedimentary, and carbonate rocks outcrop. Cenozoic deposits of sands, clayey silts, and gravels, and ferrallitic armours overlie these lithologies (Oliveira and Lisboa, 2021). Aiming to identify mineral raw materials for
construction aggregates to supply the nearby Lubango, a first characterization of their potential is provided.
Regarding characterisation of sand and gravel potential, the mineralogy of selected alluvial sand samples,
particle size classification and the respective cumulative distribution curves were studied. The analysed
sands are fine, coarse, and fine to coarse-grained aggregates, suitable for civil construction in bituminous
mixtures for roads, mortars, and concrete for civil construction. Considering the proximity to Lubango and accessibility to the raw materials, the lithologies with the greatest potential for crushed aggregates are granites and dolomite limestones. Samples of aggregates were characterised through their granulometric curve, particle shape, and physical tests. The results obtained are comparable to values of limestone and granitic aggregates and show adequate values for use in the most frequent applications.N/
Cooperation between European and African geological surveys as a pathway to raw material security for EU countries: The experience of the PanAfGeo Project [Resumo]
ABSTRACT: The PanAfGeo cooperation project between European and African geological surveys covers a wide range of raw material issues, from mineral resources assessment, artisanal and small scale mining to geohazards and environmental management of mines. In the projected third phase of the project, PanAfGeo Plus, the relevance of raw material topics is expected to be even greater. The main task of the Project is to organise training courses for young employees of African geological surveys, in which not only textbook geological knowledge is transferred, but a great deal of emphasis is placed on the protection of mineral deposits, the application of best available practices in both mineral exploration and exploitation and licensing principles.N/
