This Supervised Teaching Practice Report (STPR) was developed as part of the Master’s Degree in Preschool and Primary Education. The internship took place in a second-grade class at a public school, consisting of 21 students, whose primary teacher followed the Modern School Movement model. The main objective of this study was to investigate the role of the Individual Work Plan (IWP) and Autonomous Study Time (AST) in promoting student’s self-regulated learning. The study was based on a qualitative approach, utilizing naturalistic and systematic observation, semi-structured interviews, and the analysis of observation grids. The research questions focused on the importance of AST and IWP in self-regulation, strategies for improving AST, and student’s perceptions of the process. The results indicate that both AST and IWP play a crucial role in developing student’s autonomy, fostering their ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning. It was found that the students have positive perceptions of AST and IWP, recognizing them as important tools for organizing and self-managing their work. It is concluded that the implementation of clear evaluation criteria and the active participation of children in the learning process enhance their self-regulation

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in understanding how therapists feel about dealing, daily, with clients who are suffering, investigating the strategies they adopt and the variables that may influence their psychological well-being. However, we still find ourselves with many unanswered questions, particularly in therapists living in Portugal. This study focuses on Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL), more specifically on its characterising dimensions: Compassion Satisfaction (CS) and Compassion Fatigue (CS), grouping both Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between these phenomenon’s and the sociodemographic and work characteristics of 456 clinical psychologists living in Portugal, as well as to explore the impact that coping strategies and self-care can have on ProQOL. To this end, three multiple linear regressions were conduct, allowing us to see how the different types of coping strategies - Problem-Focused Coping Strategies (PFCS), Emotion-Focused Coping Strategies (EFCS) and Avoidant Coping Strategies (ACS) - affect each dimension of ProQOL. The results showed that PFCS enhances CS, while EFCS and ACS contribute to an increase in Burnout and STS. Regarding self-care, it significantly mediated the relationship between ECFP and CS and the relationship between ACS and Burnout. Providing an insight into how the professional context of clinical psychologists in Portugal impacts on ProQOL, we found that PFCS and self-care increase CS, while ACS contributes to CF

What makes fathers involved? Fathers’ time, education, and cooperative coparenting

    No full text
Father involvement is considered multidetermined, being influenced by personal and family characteristics. These variables, however, are rarely examined together, leaving unclear what makes fathers involved. A multilevel dyadic approach was used to examine the relationship between fathers’ and mothers’ demographics, parenting stress, coparenting, and father involvement among dual-earner couples (n=311 dyads). Fathers (Mage = 39.33; SD=6.04) and mothers (Mage = 36.81; SD=5.96) of a young child (M=4.36; SD=1.69; 52.4% boys) reported on education, parental stress, and time committed to childcare (level 1 variables), work–family conflict, their child’s age, and coparenting (level 2). The findings revealed that, regarding individual variables (level 1), only father’s education and father’s time committed to child activities were related to a greater proportion of father involvement. At the family level (level 2), older children, more children in the family, and cooperative coparenting were related to a greater proportion of father involvement. The results highlight the importance of fathers’ perspectives and characteristics to their involvement. The findings may be used to promote father involvement and inform public policies on the topic

    No full text
Após a análise temática de todas as dimensões, foram elaboradas dezasseis ideias-chave, treze na dimensão da avaliação e três nas necessidades.ABSTRACT: Family foster care is a current topic that has increasingly gained visibility through various media outlets and is supported by scientific evidence as a preferred and ecommended approach for the healthy development of children and young people in vulnerable situations. This measure seeks to ensure that children and young people in care have the opportunity to be integrated into stable family environments, rather than remaining in long-term institutional care. This study is exploratory and aims to investigate and analyze, through the experiences and narratives of key stakeholders, how foster family candidates are selected and evaluated, as well as to identify the needs of professionals in this field. To conduct this investigation, the study instrument developed by Caron, R., Poitras, K., St-Laurent, D., Joly, M., Poirier, M., Berthelot, N., Dubois-Comtois, K. (2022) was used, along with a ociodemographic questionnaire. A total of twenty-four professionals from different regions of the country were interviewed. Data processing and interpretation were conducted through thematic analysis using a qualitative method, respecting the ethical considerations underlying the research. The results reveal the existence of four assessment dimensions: motivation, the commitments that foster families must have, the importance of parental competence, the autonomy and characteristics of the candidate(s), and attachment. These themes were identified by key stakeholders as the most important areas for the success and quality of foster care. Regarding the needs of professionals, two dimensions were identified: in terms of assessment itself and in support and supervision. After the thematic analysis of all dimensions, sixteen key ideas were developed, thirteen in the evaluation dimension and three in the needs dimension

Revisiting “The Malicious Serpent”: Phylogenetically threatening stimulus marked in the human brain

    No full text
Twenty years ago, Öhman and Mineka's publication “The Malicious Serpent” emphasized the selective pressure ancestral reptiles would have on early mammals’ visual system, specifically the development of a set of subcortical structures that would provide snake-like images privileged access to the amygdala. This process would occur automatically and allows for quick defensive reactions. Based on criticisms directed to the snake detection research, we created five questions that guided the discussion in this review. Evidence suggests the existence of a set of subcortical structures that promote prompt detection of snakes and sustained attention, but difficulties arise due to the complex interconnectivity of cortical and subcortical structures and multiple threat responses. Gaps in the research are identified as potential for future investigation.

Investigações futuras poderão aprofundar o estudo das barreiras específicas experienciadas por diferentes comunidades religiosas e étnicas.ABSTRACT: Background — Mental health care services (MHCS) are internationally inderutilized by religious people. However, little is known about how these people perceive MHCS in Portugal, a country with a strong Catholic tradition and increasing religious diversity. Aims — To study the relationship between: religiosity and help-seeking attitudes (HSA); sociodemographic characteristics and HSA; religiosity and barriers to access to mental health care. Method — A convenience sample was used, made up of 310 adult participants residing in Portugal (78.7% affiliated to religions, 74.8% women, 23.5% immigrants). The data collection was done online through the Google Forms platform, using the following instruments: sociodemographic questionnaire; Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire – Brief Version (SCSRFQ-BR); Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help-Short Form (ATSPPH-SF); and an adapted questionnaire of barriers to access to care. Results — Religiosity and HSA were negatively and significantly correlated, even when controlled for different sociodemographic variables. However, the correlation lost significance in the presence of religious affiliation and time of residence in Portugal. The main barriers to access evoked were fear of incompatibility between religious/spiritual (R/E) values and the treatments available, and concerns about how their R/E beliefs would be received by MHCS. Conclusions — Religious people perceive MHCS more negatively and experience particular concerns and fears in seeking professional help. Mental health professionals must develop R/E skills to better respond to these people’s needs. A more open communication and interaction between both parties is also needed. Future studies may deepen the understanding of specific barriers experienced by different religious and ethnic communities

The experience of maternal bereavement following the loss of a child is a deeply complex and personal process. This research aims to explore the complex dynamics of maternal bereavement and the role of the siblings through a qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Through the results obtained, it was possible to gain a more comprehensive insight into the unique way in which siblings contribute to the mourning process of mothers and the whole underlying experience of maternal loss, through the view of eight Portuguese bereaved mothers, by means of an interview and subsequent analysis of the experience. Around six main themes were identified, with various sub-themes: (1) transformation of the vision of being-in-the-world, maternal role and state of alienation; (2) uniqueness and individuality of each child; (3) intersubjectivity of mourning, emotional protection and double pain - impact on the family and control of the narrative; (4) fear of the death of other children; (5) search for the symbolic continuity of the deceased child and (6) children as a source of purpose, strength, meaning and change in the mourning process. The conclusions presented here may have significant implications for the approach and follow-up of maternal bereavement in psychotherapy, as well as for the way siblings are dealt with and their relationship with their mothers during this devastating experienc

The practice of chemsex has aroused growing interest in psychological research. The main objective of the present study was to describe the specificities of chemsex practice among LGB and heterosexual adults in Portugal, as well as to assess the impact on mental wellbeing and its relationship with the social support of these individuals. As such, it was necessary to understand whether people with greater involvement in chemsex and greater frequency in its practice have significantly lower levels of well-being and social support; LGB individuals have significantly greater involvement and frequency in chemsex practice compared to heterosexual adults; it is also predicted that the LGB population practising chemsex will have significantly lower levels of well-being and social support compared to heterosexual adults; the verification of moderate to strong correlations between the well-being and social support of the participants. Method: 67 adults aged between 18 and 57 answered an online questionnaire. Results: Significant differences were found for the level of EAS in the Casual and Addictive groups in relation to involvement in chemsex; the variables Frequency of Chemsex and Sexual Orientation are significantly dependent on each other; it can also be seen that there are significant differences for the level of EAS according to sexual orientation, with the heterosexual group also finding that there are significant differences for the total EAS level according to sexual orientation; the correlations between the WHO-5 and the Social Support Scale Indexes in the LGB Group are much higher and more significant compared to the straight group. Discussion: The results are in line with the literature regarding the social support variable, as well as regarding the discrepancy in the involvement and frequency of LGB individuals
