Internationalization of destinations: A case-study of Nazaré

    No full text
This thesis examines the internationalization process of Nazaré during the XXI century, focusing on the role of tourism in shaping the town’s economy and demographic dynamics, and discusses the implication in these dimensions of a tourism strategy focused in a monoattraction, in the case of Nazaré, surfing. This thesis analyzes Nazaré within a framework of destination making, considering different elements under which this process is considered, following the theoretical frameworks of Destination Internationalization, namely Mira & Breda (2021). Following the literature models reviewed, several sources of qualitative data were explored for a thorough and immersive study of the internationalization of this coastal village, to answer the research question: “To what extent and with what consequences have Nazaré’s economy and demography changed under an internationalization take, in the XXI century?” The analysis found several positive and negative consequences of internationalization, such as economic development and migration contributing to the rejuvenation of the population, and real estate crisis and social inequalities. These were then scrutinized under a critical sustainability in tourism and development lens contributing for studies on the internationalization of small coastal towns and further research on tourism sustainability.

Blockchain for maritime supply chain: Efficiency and security advancements

    Get PDF
The maritime supply chain plays a vital role in global trade, but it continues to face major challenges, including transparency issues, fraud, and data privacy concerns. Blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution to make the supply chain more secure, efficient, and trustworthy across the system. However, it still encounters limitations, especially regarding privacy and the handling of large volumes of data. To address these issues, Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) offer a viable solution, enabling the validation of documents and transactions without revealing sensitive information. This helps maintain confidentiality while meeting regulatory requirements, such as those set by the eFTI regulation. This paper investigates blockchain adoption in maritime supply chains with a focus on ZKP integration for secure document verification, fraud mitigation, and regulatory compliance. It evaluates computational overhead, scalability, and adoption barriers, and proposes a framework supported by simulation-based validation using Ethereum and ZoKrates to assess feasibility and performance. By combining ZKPs with blockchain, this approach enhances a secure, transparent, and efficient trade ecosystem, optimising resources and reducing risks. Future research directions are outlined to advance sustainable maritime logistics.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

How quasi-internal resources enhance firm performance during large-scale emergencies: The role of trade-off between CSR and business innovations

    Get PDF
Although quasi-internal resources—such as strategic alliances, long-term partnerships, and collaborative networks—typically enhance a firm’s adaptability, their effectiveness can be compromised in crisis situations due to supply chain disruptions, strained partnerships, and volatile market conditions. This research explores how quasi-internal resources influence firm performance through the trade-off between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business innovation, with a particular focus on the moderating role of market environmental uncertainty. We developed a theoretical model grounded in resource dependence theory and tested our hypotheses using PLS-SEM analysis on data from 397 valid questionnaires collected from various companies. The findings reveal that quasi-internal resources do not directly enhance firm performance during large-scale emergencies. However, they play a critical role in strengthening the trade-off between CSR and business innovation, particularly through strategic adjustments and decision-making processes, which mediate their impact on performance. Conversely, the trade-off in incentive mechanisms does not significantly mediate this relationship. Additionally, market environmental uncertainty positively moderates the relationship between quasi-internal resources and the trade-offs in incentive mechanisms and decision-making processes, but it does not significantly affect strategic adjustments. These insights underscore the importance of strategic resource management in sustaining firm performance amidst uncertainty.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Searching for reasoning and meaning in insolvency case law: A critical analysis of Portuguese judicial practice

    Get PDF
This paper examines Portuguese insolvency and pre-insolvency judicial proceedings through the lens of legal consciousness, drawing on qualitative analysis of 338 first-instance court decisions from 2007-2020. Through systematic coding and critical discourse analysis, we identify a paradoxical phenomenon we term "borrowed authority" - judicial decisions that voice the law's authority while simultaneously lacking authentic judicial voicing. This pattern manifests through mechanized jurisprudence, epistemic limitations, and moral evaluations that collectively contribute to the institutional marginalization of insolvency law. Our findings reveal how courts' discursive practices both reflect and reinforce broader patterns of institutional disengagement and social meaning-making around debt. The study advances theoretical understanding of how legal consciousness operates in insolvency contexts while offering practical insights into how procedural inertia and epistemic vulnerabilities systematically undermine the achievement of insolvency law's stated goals of economic rehabilitation and debtor relief.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influence of online platforms on the public's perception of the police system in France

    No full text
O estudo abrange as três principais instituições policiais francesas: a polícia nacional, a gendarmaria nacional e a polícia municipal. This dissertation examines how social media influence public perceptions of the police in France, focusing on legitimacy, satisfaction, and cooperation. The study covers the three main institutions of French policing: the national police, the national gendarmerie, and the municipal police. It explores how online communication affects trust and attitudes, drawing on scholarship in communication, criminology, and sociology. Special attention is given to the Gilets jaunes movement, a wave of protests that began in late 2018. Initially triggered by fuel tax increases, it rapidly expanded into a broader revolt against economic inequality and government policies. Protesters wore the iconic high-visibility yellow vests (gilets jaunes), and the movement generated viral images and videos that heavily shaped police visibility and reputation online. The hypotheses test how exposure to official content, perceived transparency, online-offline coherence, and perceptions of propaganda influence legitimacy and satisfaction, which in turn affect willingness to cooperate. Offline drivers such as informal contact, neighborhood cohesion, and perceptions of disorder are also integrated. By combining these dimensions, the model highlights the interaction between digital communication strategies and traditional opinion drivers. This research contributes to debates on professionalized police communication, misinformation, and the conditions under which public trust in law enforcement can be reinforced

HackaBIP: Possibilities and challenges of co-producing civic tech in Lisbon's local development

    Get PDF
This study explores the potential of civic hacking to enhance local development in Lisbon, focusing on the hackaBIP civic hackathon as a participatory model for the co-production of digital tools. The research asks how to engage local initiative organisations in civic tech co-production and adopts the civic hackathon as a collaborative methodology and as a basis for designing an information infrastructure for sustainable collaboration. The Lisbon Local Development Strategy BIP/ZIP served as the context, given the need to improve the collaboration and monitoring capacities of its network of actors, understood under the penta-helix model of social innovation. The results show that, despite the potential of the civic techs generated to explore available open data and generate other necessary data, the initiative faced significant challenges, such as power imbalances between community actors and tech developers. Discussions highlight the importance of the igniter actor in sustaining ongoing collaboration, the need for academic institutions to engage more actively with community initiatives, and the need for local governments to be more responsive. Ultimately, this research argues for the establishment of hackable universities - open and transdisciplinary academic environments that foster dialogue with local initiatives to increase civic engagement and contribute to building hackable cities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The evolution of financial architecture supporting the BRICS: Reshaping the global financial order?

    Get PDF
Introduction: The financial architecture underpinning the BRICS has undergone significant evolution, reflecting broader changes in global economic governance. As a coalition of major emerging economies, the BRICS have sought to develop alternative financial mechanisms that enhance economic cooperation, reduce dependence on Western-dominated institutions, and promote a multipolar global financial order. This study explores the structural dynamics of these financial arrangements, analyzing their evolution, operational structures, and implications for global financial governance. A key component of this architecture is the New Development Bank (NDB), created to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects within the BRICS countries and beyond. The NDB, together with other mechanisms such as the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), represents a strategic effort to provide alternative sources of financing while mitigating external financial vulnerabilities. Methods: This research, based on the analysis of official policy documents, aims to answer the following research questions: To what extent does the financial architecture developed by the BRICS, particularly through the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, represent a counterinstitutionalization strategy in relation to global financial governance? Can the patterns of action and cooperation promoted by the BRICS through their financial mechanisms be interpreted as evidence of the Chinese revisionist vision embodied by the BRICS? Results and discussion: Our first hypothesis is that it is possible to state that the BRICS constitute a challenge to international financial governance based on the counter-institutionalization strategy. In this way, the BRICS do not seek to replace the established global governance system, but rather to change it, generating adaptations. The second hypothesis, in turn, is that the BRICS appear to have incorporated the Chinese vision of global governance, by configuring themselves as a revisionist group and not a “full reformist” group, which means that the strategies of contesting the status quo seek to complement existing institutions and norms and not to replace them. By examining the evolution and structural dynamics of these financial arrangements, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the role of emerging economies in reshaping the global financial order.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
This study aims to calculate the price of interest rate caps for a fictitious company, ACN, using both the SABR and Hull-White models. The study provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of each model, details their implementation in MATLAB, and compares the resulting cap prices. The SABRmodeliswidely used in the pricing of interest rste derivatives, and it is known for its ability to capture the stochastic volatility of financial assets. Conversely, the Hull-White model uses a different approach to model interest rate dynamics and volatilities. The models were calibrated using parameters generated by a custom algorithm, and the pricing calculations were conducted using MATLAB. The results compares the price obtained using the two models. The two different prices highlight the sensitivity of cap pricing to the underlying assumptions and numerical implementations of each model. Also, the observed price difference underscores the importance of understanding the unique characteristics and limitations of each model when applied to interest rate cap pricing. This study contributes to the knowledge of the field by showing the strengths and limitations of the pricing methodologies used as it explored practical considerations in implementing pricing techniques, including data requirements, computational complexity, and calibration processes

    No full text
Occupational stress in the hotel sector is a problem that has increased significantly over time, directly affecting the success of companies and the physical and mental health of their employees. In this perspective, it is imperative and essential to understand the effects of stress in the work environment and to create effective measures, not only to combat, but also to prevent this scourge, in order to reduce/eliminate its causes and effects. In order to assist hotel units in stress management, the development of a comprehensive assessment model seems to be the most viable alternative, considering the existing flaws/limitations in the current literature. Thus, this dissertation presents a multicriteria analysis model, supported by an integrated analysis that associates cognitive mapping techniques based on the Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA) approach with the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique, in order to define the best measures to combat work-related stress for the hotel sector. Therefore, it is intended to achieve a decision-making support process with a greater degree of approximation to reality, thus providing a simpler and more conscious decision-making on the part of individuals
