Influence of sex, family structure, and access to technology on the motor development of children aged 24 to 48 months
Background/Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the influence of sex, the presence of siblings, and the duration of exposure to technology on the development of gross and fine motor skills in children aged between 24 and 48 months, using the PDMS-2 battery as the assessment instrument. Methods: The sample comprised 193 children, distributed across three age groups: 24 months (N = 22), 36 months (N = 78), and 48 months (N = 93). The assessed skills included Postural Control, Locomotion, Object Manipulation, Fine Grasping, and Visual–Motor Integration, grouped into the domains of Gross Motor and Fine Motor development. Statistical analysis was conducted using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests, complemented by the epsilon squared (ε2) effect size measure. Results: The results revealed statistically significant differences between sexes, with girls demonstrating superior performance in Fine Motor and Visual–Motor Integration tasks, particularly at 36 and 48 months (p < 0.05; ε2 up to 0.22). The presence of siblings showed a positive impact only at 36 months, while the duration of exposure to technology did not present a significant association with motor performance at any age group. Conclusions: The Total Motor Quotient (TMQ) varied according to the variables analyzed, reinforcing the notion that motor development is multifactorial and sensitive to familial and social contexts. These findings highlight the importance of considering both environmental and biological factors when designing motor intervention strategies in early childhood
Generative jazz chord progressions: A statistical approach to harmonic creativity
Jazz music has long been a subject of interest in the field of generative music. Traditional jazz chord progressions follow established patterns that contribute to the genre’s distinct sound. However, the demand for more innovative and diverse harmonic structures has led to the exploration of alternative approaches in music generation. This paper addresses the challenge of generating novel and engaging jazz chord sequences that go beyond traditional chord progressions. It proposes an unconventional statistical approach, leveraging a corpus of 1382 jazz standards, which includes key information, song structure, and chord sequences by section. The proposed method generates chord sequences based on statistical patterns extracted from the corpus, considering a tonal context while introducing a degree of unpredictability that enhances the results with elements of surprise and interest. The goal is to move beyond conventional and well-known jazz chord progressions, exploring new and inspiring harmonic possibilities. The evaluation of the generated dataset, which matches the size of the learning corpus, demonstrates a strong statistical alignment between distributions across multiple analysis parameters while also revealing opportunities for further exploration of novel harmonic pathways
Healthy motivations for food consumption in 16 countries

We thank the contribution of Viktoria Szűcs for helping collect data for the project in Hungary, and Lucia Frez-Muñoz for helping collect data for the project in The Netherlands.There are many factors that can influence people’s attitudes towards healthy eating, including personal nature, sociodemographic influences, and lifestyle. This work investigated to what extent the motivations for healthy food consumption are shaped in individuals from different countries. A questionnaire survey was carried out on a sample of 11,919 participants from 16 countries. The results indicated that the strongest motivations for healthy food consumption were related to the perception of consuming healthy food, eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals, allied to food safety and hygiene concerns. Significant differences were found in healthy motivations between countries. Additionally, the sociodemographic variables that had a higher influence on health motivation levels were country, age, and gender. Concerning the anthropometric and lifestyle variables influencing healthy motivation for food consumption, the discriminating variables were: believing in having a healthy diet, physical exercise, and chronic diseases. In conclusion, the work showed important differences in the motivations for a healthy diet in different countries, but other variables also play a role in the motivation for the consumption of foods for health and well-being.This research was funded by CI&DETS Research Centre (Polytechnic University of Viseu, Portugal) grant number PROJ/CI&DETS/CGD/0012, and also by the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of the research unit projects Ref. Educação inclusiva e a implementação do sistema de sinalização: estudo comparativo entre Cabo Verde e Portugal
Dissertação apresentada à Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Educação Especial – Domínio Cognitivo e Motor.Educação Inclusiva tem se tornado um elemento crucial nas pautas educativas atuais, sendo amplamente discutida como um princípio essencial para a promoção da equidade e da justiça social no acesso a educação. Entretanto, para que a inclusão se realize de modo eficaz, é fundamental a existência de apolíticas públicas consistentes, apoiadas por legislações que incentivem práticas educacionais que atendam às demandas de todos os estudantes, independentemente das suas características individuais.
Neste cenário, o objetivo deste estudo é realizar uma análise comparativa das políticas de Educação Inclusiva adotadas em Cabo Verde e em Portugal, focando especialmente em como cada país organiza e implementa o Sistema de Sinalização de crianças e jovens que necessitam de apoio educativo específico. A investigação adota uma abordagem qualitativa e tem como método principal a análise documental. O objeto de estudo centra-se nos documentos legais e normativos que regem as políticas de educação inclusiva nos dois países, nomeadamente leis de bases do sistema educativo, decretos-leis, despachos, guias orientadores e manuais de apoio à prática.
A coleta de dados foi feita através da análise sistemática de documentos oficiais, possibilitando identificar e comparar as iniciativas adotadas, os mecanismos de sinalização estabelecidos, os papéis conferidos às equipes multidisciplinares e os referenciais legais empregados nos processos de avaliação e intervenção educativa. Os resultados alcançados demonstram aspectos de semelhança e diferença entre os dois contextos. De um lado, tanto os países têm adotado uma perspetiva mais ampla e inclusiva da educação, integrando princípios que valorizam a diversidade e que procuram assegurar a participação completa de todos os estudantes no processo de ensino. Por outro lado, nota-se a presença de diferenças importantes na forma como os Sistemas de Sinalização são organizados, nos documentos utilizados e nas normas legais utilizadas, refletindo realidades históricas, institucionais e políticas diversas.
Este estudo contribui para a compreensão das políticas de Educação Inclusiva em contextos lusófonos, reforçando a importância do alinhamento entre legislação que condiciona a prática pedagógica e a formação dos profissionais de educação como condição essencial para a construção de sistemas educativos verdadeiramente inclusivos.Abstract: Inclusive Education has become a crucial element in current educational agendas, widely discussed as a key principle for promoting equity and social justice in access to education. However, for inclusion to be effectively achieved, it is essential to have consistent public policies supported by legislation that encourages educational practices capable of addressing the needs of all students, regardless of their individual characteristics.
In this context, the aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the Inclusive Education policies adopted in Cabo Verde and Portugal, with a particular focus on how each country organizes and implements the system for identifying children and young people who require specific educational support. The research adopts a qualitative approach, with documentary analysis as its primary method. The object of study is centered on legal and normative documents that govern inclusive education policies in both countries, namely education system framework laws, decrees, official orders, guiding documents, and practical support manuals.
Data collection was carried out through a systematic analysis of official documents, allowing for the identification and comparison of the initiatives adopted, the signaling mechanisms established, the roles assigned to multidisciplinary teams, and the legal frameworks employed in the processes of educational assessment and intervention. The findings reveal both similarities and differences between the two contexts. On one hand, both countries have embraced a broader and more inclusive perspective on education, incorporating principles that value diversity and aim to ensure the full participation of all students in the learning process. On the other hand, significant differences are observed in how the signaling systems are structured, in the documents used, and in the legal regulations applied, reflecting distinct historical, institutional, and political realities.
This study contributes to the understanding of Inclusive Education policies in Lusophone contexts, reinforcing the importance of alignment between legislation, pedagogical practice, and the training of education professionals as a key condition for building truly inclusive educational systems
Big Data-based recommendation systems
Introduction: With the exponential growth of data, digital platforms increasingly rely on Big Data technologies to personalize user experiences and improve the accuracy of item recommendations. Recommendation systems play a critical role in e-commerce, entertainment, and social media by analyzing user interactions, behaviors, and preferences. However, the complexity of large-scale data processing and the diversity of filtering techniques pose significant challenges to achieving high performance and scalability.
Objectives: This study aims to analyze how Big Data technologies are applied in modern recommendation systems, emphasizing their role in enhancing personalization and system performance. The work seeks to identify the main data collection strategies, algorithms, and tools adopted in recent research, as well as to assess how these systems address challenges related to scalability and real-time processing.
Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using the IEEE Xplore database, focusing on articles published between 2015 and 2025. The search targeted studies combining Big Data and recommendation systems within e-commerce contexts. Out of 49 retrieved publications, 10 met the inclusion criteria, and 5 were ultimately selected after applying exclusion filters. Each selected paper was analyzed regarding its objectives, employed algorithms, data sources, and achieved outcomes.
Results: The reviewed studies demonstrate a wide variety of approaches and technologies, including Hadoop and Spark frameworks for large-scale data processing, deep learning models such as DeepLearning4j for real-time prediction, and classical data mining algorithms like K-Means, Apriori, and FP-Growth. Hybrid methods combining collaborative and content-based filtering were shown to overcome limitations such as the cold start and data sparsity problems. Scalability was addressed through distributed processing and optimization techniques like network pruning and parallel computation. These systems achieved higher recommendation precision and responsiveness across different e-commerce and media applications.
Conclusions: The analysis confirms that Big Data–driven recommendation systems are essential for enhancing user engagement and conversion in digital platforms. By integrating data mining, machine learning, and distributed processing technologies, these systems deliver efficient, adaptive, and context-aware recommendations. Future developments should continue exploring hybrid and deep learning–based approaches to further improve scalability, personalization, and computational performance in increasingly complex digital ecosystems
A dinâmica do cuidado: um estudo misto sobre as percepções dos cuidadores formais sobre a pessoa idosa e o "olhar" da pessoa idosa sobre os seus cuidadores formais
Trabalho de Projeto apresentado à Escola Superior de Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Gerontologia Social.O envelhecimento é um processo natural que implica transformações físicas, psicológicas e sociais, o que exige respostas adequadas por parte dos profissionais que atuam nesta área. Os cuidadores formais desempenham um papel fundamental ao prestar cuidados físicos e apoio emocional às pessoas idosas. As perceções que estes profissionais têm sobre o envelhecimento, bem como as perceções que os próprios idosos têm dos cuidadores, influenciam significativamente a qualidade da relação estabelecida e, consequentemente, dos cuidados prestados. Neste sentido, compreender estas perceções torna-se essencial para a promoção do bem-estar da população idosa e para a melhoria contínua dos serviços institucionais.
O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar as perceções mútuas entre cuidadores formais e pessoas idosas, explorando de que forma essas representações influenciam a relação entre ambos. Pretendeu-se, especificamente, compreender as atitudes dos cuidadores face ao envelhecimento e à pessoa idosa, perceber como os idosos percecionam os cuidadores e identificar os fatores que condicionam essas perceções, como a formação profissional, a cultura e as experiências pessoais. A investigação foi desenvolvida numa Santa Casa da Misericórdia, seguindo uma abordagem de estudo de caso, de natureza mista e carácter descritivo. A amostra foi constituída por 50 cuidadores formais e 7 pessoas mais velhas residentes, selecionadas por conveniência, com base em critérios de inclusão previamente definidos. Os dados foram recolhidos através da aplicação da Escala de Atitudes Face aos Idosos (AKPI) e de um questionário sociodemográfico junto dos cuidadores. Aos idosos foi aplicado um questionário sociodemográfico e realizada a técnica do Focus Group. A confidencialidade e a voluntariedade da participação foram salvaguardadas em todas as fases do estudo. Os resultados indicam que os cuidadores, em geral, revelam atitudes positivas face às pessoas idosas. Contudo, também se registaram atitudes ambivalentes, atribuídas ao desgaste emocional associado à função e à insuficiente formação específica sobre envelhecimento. Por sua vez, as pessoas idosas demonstraram, maioritariamente, satisfação com os cuidados recebidos, destacando a dedicação e o empenho dos cuidadores. Ainda assim, foram referidas situações pontuais de impaciência e distanciamento emocional, salientando a importância de reforçar relações baseadas na escuta ativa e no respeito mútuo.
Conclui-se que a qualidade da interação entre cuidadores formais e pessoas idosas depende das perceções e é influenciada por múltiplos fatores, nomeadamente a escolaridade e a idade. Assim, torna-se essencial investir na formação contínua dos cuidadores, promover ambientes mais humanizados e combater os estereótipos negativos sobre o envelhecimento. Com base nas necessidades identificadas, foi delineada uma proposta de intervenção intitulada “Cuidar com Sentido”, com o objetivo de promover relações mais empáticas, comunicativas e respeitosas entre cuidadores e pessoas idosas, contribuindo para o bem-estar emocional e a qualidade dos cuidados prestados.Abstract: Aging is a natural process that entails physical, psychological, and social changes, requiring appropriate responses from professionals in the field. Formal caregivers play a crucial role by providing physical care and emotional support to older adults. The perceptions these professionals hold about aging, as well as the perceptions older people have of their caregivers, significantly influence the quality of their interactions and the care provided. Therefore, understanding these mutual perceptions is essential to promote the well-being of the elderly population and to improve institutional care services.
This study aimed to analyze the mutual perceptions between formal caregivers and older people, exploring how these perceptions shape their relationships. Specifically, it sought to understand caregivers’ attitudes toward aging, explore how older adults perceive their caregivers, and identify the factors influencing these perceptions, such as professional training, cultural background, and personal experiences. The research was conducted at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, using a case study approach with a mixed-methods, descriptive design. The sample consisted of 50 formal caregivers and 7 institutionalized older adults, selected through convenience sampling and specific inclusion criteria. Data were collected through the Attitudes Toward the Elderly Scale (AKPI) and a sociodemographic questionnaire for caregivers. For older adults, a sociodemographic questionnaire and a Focus Group were used. Confidentiality and voluntary participation were ensured throughout the study. The results showed that caregivers generally demonstrated positive attitudes toward older adults, valuing empathy, patience, and life experience. However, some ambivalent attitudes were identified, often associated with emotional fatigue and a lack of specific training on aging. Older adults, in turn, mostly expressed satisfaction with the care received, highlighting the dedication of caregivers. Nevertheless, occasional reports of impatience or emotional detachment were noted, underscoring the need for relationships grounded in active listening and mutual respect.
It is concluded that the quality of interaction between caregivers and older adults largely depends on reciprocal perceptions and is influenced by various factors, including educational background, institutional context, and past experiences. Continuous training, the promotion of humanized environments, and the fight against negative aging stereotypes are essential to improving care and ensuring the well-being of older adults. Based on the identified needs, an intervention proposal entitled “Cuidar com Sentido” (“Caring with Meaning”) was developed, aiming to enhance the quality of relationships between formal caregivers and older adults through strategies focused on empathy, communication, specific training, and emotional well-being
Implementação de um plano de negócios para a criação de um alojamento de turismo no espaço rural (ter) sustentável
Trabalho de Projeto apresentado a Escola Superior de Gesta o de Idanha-a-Nova do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários a obtenção do grau de Mestre em Gesta o de Empresas.O presente projeto apresenta-se como uma das exigências inerente ao termino do Mestrado em Gestão de Empresas e é o resultado duma descrição, explicação e reflexão exaustiva e cuidada, relativamente às varias fases para a criação de um alojamento de Turismo em Espaço Rural - Agroturismo. Neste projeto foram utilizadas varias ideologias de diversos autores como forma de explicar o grande fenómeno que é o turismo. Para ale m desta dimensão, e também identificada a evolução do turismo em Portugal, do turismo no Centro, a importância de um plano estratégico e de um pensamento estratégico e a evolução do turismo em espaço rural. Ao longo do desenvolvimento pra tico do projeto, e feito um enquadramento geral da ideia de nego cio, e apresentada a natureza jurídica da empresa, a localização geográfica do alojamento, são apresentadas os desafios e oportunidades para um alojamento sustentável e é desenvolvido um plano de nego cios. Por fim, o principal objetivo do projeto e a implementação de um empreendimento de Turismo no Espaço Rural (TER) sustentável, no concelho da Covilhã, com foco na sustentabilidade, e perceber quais são os principais desafios e oportunidades para a criação de um Turismo no Espaço Rural sustentável e de sucesso, e como pode um plano de nego cios inovador ser desenvolvido para maximizar o potencial de rentabilidade, satisfaça o do cliente e impacto positivo na comunidade local.Abstract: This project presents itself as one of the requirements inherent to the conclusion of the Master's Degree in Business Management and is the result of an exhaustive and careful description, explanation and reflection, regarding the various phases for the creation of a Rural Tourism accommodation - Agritourism. In this project, several ideologies from different authors were used as a way of explaining the great phenomenon that is tourism, in addition to this, the evolution of Portugal’s tourism, more specific, in the center of country, the importance of a strategic plan and thinking about a strategies and evolution of tourism in rural areas. Throughout the practical development of the project, a general framework of the company’s legal nature is presented, the accommodation’s geographic location is presented the challenges and opportunities for sustainable accommodation and a business plan is developed. Finally, the project’s main objective is the implementation of a sustainable Rural Tourism (TER) enterprise, in the municipality of Covilhã, with focus on sustainability and, understanding what the main challenges and opportunities are for, creating Tourism in the Sustainable and successful rural space, and how an innovative business plan can be developed to maximize potential profitability, customer satisfaction and positive impact on the local community
A inovação como impulsionador económico dos países e da competitividade das PME: uma abordagem multinível.
A análise desenvolve-se em três níveis. No nível macroeconómico, avalia-se
o desempenho de Portugal no GII 2023, onde o país ocupa a 30ª posição global. São identificados avanços em áreas como Capital Humano, Instituições e Outputs Criativos, mas também desafios significativos em infraestruturas e sofisticação de mercado, essenciais para a consolidação de um sistema inovador robusto. A dissertação examina comparativamente a posição de Portugal em relação a outros países europeus de desempenho semelhante, destacando as implicações de políticas públicas e iniciativas nacionais para fomentar a inovação.
No nível mesoeconómico, o foco está nas práticas de inovação aberta adotadas pelas PME portuguesas. A investigação evidencia que estas empresas, apesar de enfrentarem limitações financeiras e estruturais, têm integrado estratégias colaborativas, como parcerias com universidades, centros de investigação e outras empresas, para superar desafios. Entre os benefícios, destacam-se o aumento da capacidade de inovação e a intensificação de competências internas, enquanto os principais obstáculos incluem a resistência
cultural, as complexidades na gestão de parcerias e os desafios relacionados à proteção da propriedade intelectual.
Já no nível microeconómico, a Mecalbi é analisada como exemplo prático. A empresa demonstra como a liderança visionária e uma cultura organizacional alinhada à inovação podem impulsionar o desempenho e a competitividade. A investigação combina métodos qualitativos, como entrevistas e análise de artefactos culturais, com métodos quantitativos, incluindo questionários aplicados aos colaboradores e o uso da ferramenta “Innovation Scoring” da COTEC. Este estudo revela que práticas de liderança eficaz, gestão de recursos e desenvolvimento contínuo de competências são determinantes para o sucesso em ambientes de alta competitividade.
A dissertação conclui que, embora Portugal apresente um potencial significativo para se destacar como líder em inovação, ainda enfrenta desafios para implementar práticas consistentes no nível das PME. O caso da Mecalbi evidencia que a adoção de abordagens estratégicas baseadas em colaboração, liderança visionária e cultura inovadora pode transformar limitações em vantagens competitivas.
Por fim, o trabalho apresenta recomendações direcionadas à academia, aos formuladores de políticas públicas e ao setor empresarial, destacando a necessidade de políticas públicas que estimulem a colaboração interinstitucional, maior acesso ao financiamento para inovação e a promoção de competências especializadas, destacando as PME como pilares fundamentais do ecossistema de inovação em Portugal.Abstract: The analysis unfolds across three levels. At the macroeconomic level, the dissertation evaluates Portugal's performance in the 2023 GII, where the country ranks 30th globally. Progress is identified in areas such as Human Capital, Institutions, and Creative Outputs, but significant challenges remain in
infrastructure and market sophistication, which are essential for consolidating a
robust innovation system. The dissertation compares Portugal's position with
other European countries of similar performance, highlighting the implications of
public policies and national initiatives in fostering innovation.
At the mesoeconomic level, the focus shifts to the open innovation practices
adopted by Portuguese SMEs. The research shows that despite financial and
structural constraints, these firms have integrated collaborative strategies, such
as partnerships with universities, research centers, and other companies, to
overcome challenges. Benefits such as increased innovation capacity and
strengthened internal competencies are emphasized, alongside obstacles like
cultural resistance, complexities in partnership management, and intellectual
property protection.
At the microeconomic level, Mecalbi serves as a practical example. The
company demonstrates how visionary leadership, and an organizational culture
aligned with innovation can drive performance and competitiveness. The
research combines qualitative methods, including interviews and cultural artifact
analysis, with quantitative methods, such as employee questionnaires and the
use of COTEC’s “Innovtion Scoring” tool. The study reveals that effective
leadership practices, resource management, and continuous skill development
are critical for success in highly competitive environments.
The dissertation concludes that while Portugal shows significant potential to
emerge as a leader in innovation, it still faces challenges in implementing
consistent practices at the SME level. The Mecalbi case highlights that adopting
strategic approaches based on collaboration, visionary leadership, and an
innovative culture can transform limitations into competitive advantages.
Finally, the study provides recommendations for academia, policymakers, and
the business sector, emphasizing the need for public policies that encourage
interinstitutional collaboration, increased access to innovation funding, and the
promotion of specialized skills, positioning SMEs as fundamental pillars of
Portugal’s innovation ecosystem

Accesibilidad para todos: inclusión social y autonomía mediante menús multiformato

(n=1), field notes, a focus group (n=4), and a questionnaire (n=80). Content analysis and descriptive statistics revealed that 98% of participants viewed menu modification as a means of inclusion, while

A análise de conteúdo e estatística descritiva indicou que 98% dos participantes consideram a adaptação das ementas um meio de inclusão e 95% uma estratégia promotora de autonomia.Resumen: La accesibilidad a la información en los restaurantes aún carece de estrategias eficaces para garantizar la inclusión de las personas con Necesidades Específicas (NEE). El objetivo de esta investigación fue validar la adaptación de menús en formato accesible como herramienta para promover la inclusión social y la autonomía. Se realizó un estudio de caso múltiple en dos restaurantes, con datos recogidos mediante entrevista semiestructurada (n = 1), notas de campo, Focus Group (n = 4) y cuestionario (n = 80). El análisis de contenido y las estadísticas descriptivas indicaron que el 98 % de los participantes consideraban la adaptación de los menús como un medio de inclusión y el 95 % como una estrategia para promover la autonomía
