Topography and hydrology modeling and influence on soil erosion simulation, at small basin scale

    No full text
Diffuse pollution from agricultural activities is a major environmental problem. The extent of the impacts is driven, e.g., by local topography due to the influence on hydrological processes. This study aims to investigate the use of different scale topographic data in assessing runoff-erosion processes. The TopAGNPS module, a component of the AnnAGNPS model (Annualized Agriculture Nonpoint Source), was used to assess the impact of the vertical resolution of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) on the topographic and hydrological configuration of a basin, and on the simulation of soil erosion. The study focuses on a small agro-forestry basin (190 ha) located in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal. A georeferenced survey of the basin's surface drainage network was carried out and then compared with the results of the simulated drainage networks generated by the TopAGNPS module using two DEMs with vertical resolutions of 1m and 5m. The results show that the DEM with a vertical resolution of 5m did not generate a reliable drainage network, given the relevant differences between the modelled network and the field observations. On the other hand, the drainage network generated with the DEM of 1m resolution was very similar to the observed drainage network. The use of distinct topographic configurations modelled based on different vertical resolution DEMs on the estimation of soil erosion by water using the RUSLE model (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation), resulted in significant differences considering the values of 5.85 and 4.17 ton/ha.year for the DEM with 1m and 5m vertical resolution, respectively. Considering that soil erosion by water and other processes, such as the transport of pollutants, are distributed processes, it is of great relevance to consider good topographic and hydrologic configurations to achieve more reliable simulations and better support decision-making.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Get PDF
In the dynamic web of our digital age, virtual reality (VR) is crystallizing as a promising medium for promoting physical activity in older adults, overcoming age-old barriers. This perspective article explores the intricate synergy between VR and physical activity in older adults and highlights the many challenges of aging within a virtual environment. While VR heralds the potential for multisensory interaction and cognitive enhancement, a thorough assessment of its impact is paramount. The reach of VR goes beyond immediate applications and permeates the emotional and psychological realms of the human journey. Such an exploration requires a comprehensive perspective that goes beyond a purely technical assessment. The aim of this article is not to present clear-cut solutions, but to encourage reflection on the diverse impact of VR on our aging population. We argue for a future in which technology complements, rather than eclipses, the depth of human experience.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Falls are one of the causes of severe hilliness among elders, and the COVID-19 pandemic increased the number of unattended cases because of the social distancing measures. This study aims to create a dataset that collects the data from a 3-axis acceleration sensor fixed on a hinged board apparatus that mimics a human fall event. The datalogging system uses off-the-shelf devices to measure, collect and store the data. The resulting dataset includes data from different angle positions and heights, corresponding to joints of the lower limbs of the human body (ankle, knee, and hip). We use the dataset with a threshold-based fall detection algorithm. The result from the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve shows a good behavior with a mean Area Under the Curve of 0.77 and allow to compute a best threshold value with False Positive Rate of 14.8% and True Positive rate of 89.1%. The optimal threshold value may vary depending on the specific population, activity patterns, and environmental conditions, which may require further customization and validation in real-world settings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We would like to thank CERNAS funded by national funds FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of the project Ref. UIDB/00681/2020, the GreenUPorto funded by national funds via FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) through the Strategic Projects UIDB/05748/2020 and UIDP/05748/2020 and Valorizar a Agricultura Familiar Project (PDR2020-2024-058135) for the opportunity of applying the questionnaires within the scope of its research.Agroecology integrates science, social movements, and agricultural practices, playing a central role in the sustainability of food systems. It addresses agroecosystems and food systems holistically; however, defining whether a farm is agroecological remains a challenge. This article proposes a methodology to measure farms’ agroecological performance, adapted to the family farming context in Portugal. The aim of the developed methodology is to compare the agroecological performance of family farms (conventional and non-conventional), providing information about anchors for agroecological transition and supporting public policies. A literature review identified existing farm evaluation methodologies, with Tool for Agroecological Performance Evaluation (TAPE) and Agroecology Criteria Tool (ACT) scoring highest in an assessment process. Questions from both were integrated into a questionnaire for family farmers. This field work provided critical insights towards the methodologies: (1) territorial adaptability; (2) transition constraints’ origin; and (3) use of non-academic language. The results were incorporated into the developed methodology, which combines the TAPE indicator matrix and Gliessman’s five levels of food system change, the latter of which provides the framework for the ACT. This study made it possible to identify the most relevant aspects for characterizing family farmers/farms and the importance of how the evaluation criteria/indicators are ordered by element/theme, as it alters the values of each farm’s agroecological performance. This research was funded by National Funds through the FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology, I.C.-P., within the scope of the individual doctoral research grant reference UI/BD/153087/2022.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: Urinary tract infections are defined as the presence of microorganisms in any part of the urinary system, with the exception of the distal urethra. A majority of them are uncomplicated infections that are resolved on an outpatient basis, with empirical therapy. The objectives of this work were to study the sociodemographic characteristics of patients, analyze associated strains and examine the response of the main microorganisms to antibiotics. A retrospective observational study of all positive urine cultures between 2018 and 2022 was carried out at an institution (8340 samples). Sociodemographic data were also collected. In total, 61.3% were women, with an average age of 63.4 years, and 43.2% were from the Emergency Department. A total of 13.5% were fitted, 56% of whom were women. Also, 95.9% were not taking any antibiotics, and among the individuals who were taking antibiotics, 50% were injected. Escherichia coli (53.5%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (13.8%) are identified as the most prevalent strains. In the time periods analyzed, Escherichia coli decreased its resistance to 11 antibiotics and increased to 5 antibiotics, while Klebsiella pneumoniae decreased to 7 and increased to 7, with emphasis on the presence of 3 antibiotics with a resistance rate of 100% to all Klebsiella pneumoniae strains identified in 2022.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Self-concept is one of the key aspects of personality development. It is relevant because it affects how a person sees him/herself and how he/she relates to others. During adolescence, self-perception tends to be highly variable due to the inherent changes of this stage, being a critical period in which to foster a healthy and confident personality. Add to this the critical circumstances experienced during the pandemic and it becomes a bombshell. Physical education classes, can promote the self-concept and improve school health. The aim of the study was to analyse self-concept in Spanish adolescents of physical education by sex, school location, age, educational level and body mass index (BMI) after the pandemic. A cross- sectional study of 961 students’ physical education classes in public schools in Extremadura (Spain) was obtained and administered the Self-Concept Questionnaire version 5 (AF-5). The results showed that there is an association between AF-5 and sex, where adolescent girls have lower self-concept; there is a slight inverse relationship between AF-5 with age and BMI and there is no significant association between AF-5 and school location. In conclusion, knowing the relevant factors of self-concept after covid allows the educational community to implement tools for the optimal development of self-concept in Physical Education students, thus performance of adolescents.

    No full text
Abstract: Several studies prove that accessibility still lacks an effective and effective action framework that enables access to various common day-to-day services for all people. Accessibility to information is, nowadays, a right that is not seen as full and guaranteed for people with Specific Needs (SN). Given this panorama, restaurant menus were adapted, through an inclusive design, in accessible and multi-format communication (braille, pictographic symbols for communication, QR code with audio and photographs). With the aim of validating this resource as an instrument for promoting social inclusion and autonomy for people with NE, the present investigation was based on a multiple case study involving two restaurants, in a non formaleducation context. Thedatacollection techniquesandinstruments weresemi structured interviews (n=1), field notes, Focus Group with restaurant owners and employees (n=4) and questionnaire survey addressed to restaurant customers (n=80). Using content analysis and descriptive statistical analysis, we found that all categories of analysis revealed significant values of interest regarding the perceptions of the people involved in the study. The results obtained in an exploratory survey showed that 97% of respondents consider that tourism services should provide accessible menus to guarantee accessibility and participation for all. Thus demonstrating that the adaptation of menus in accessible communication can represent a tool for promoting inclusion (98%) and autonomy (95%) of people with NE. Despite being an instrument that requires greater robustness on the part of scientific investigations, the implementation of accessible menus in restaurants can enable full and effective participation for all people, regardless of their NE, granting them the autonomy and independence that they confer dignity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
