Abstract: This internship report is structured in two parts. The first part describes the supervised teaching practice carried out in the 2023/2024 academic year at the Escola Artística de Música do Conservatório Nacional. The second part presents an investigation into motivation in piano learning. This is a descriptive and exploratory study based on a cross-sectional observational data collection technique. The aim is to identify factors and circumstances associated with motivation/demotivation in learning the piano. The problem or starting point is the high rate of failure, including dropouts, in the area of piano teaching and learning. The research had the following objectives: (i) To understand the degree of motivation of a group of piano students; (ii) To ascertain the teacher's and student's perspective on motivation; (iii) To identify common characteristics and circumstances among students who say they are motivated, and among students who say they are unmotivated; (iv) To understand whether the degree of motivation reported by the student correlates with their academic results. The literature review allowed us to learn about theories and models that clarify the factors associated with motivational processes, and to understand the role of teachers, parents and students themselves in mobilising intrinsic and/or extrinsic motivation. Based on this conceptual basis, two questionnaires were drawn up, one aimed at piano students and the other at their teachers. The results obtained suggest that motivation is a crucial factor in piano learning, influencing student results. The positive relationship between student and teacher, the adaptation of lessons to individual needs, and support in overcoming technical and organisational challenges are essential elements in fostering student motivation. In addition, the relationship between motivation and performance reinforces the importance of a personalised learning environment capable of responding to students' needs

West Nile virus antibodies in wild birds of prey from the North of Portugal

    No full text
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne arbovirus spread worldwide, with an enzootic cycle among ornithophilic mosquitoes and birds. Rising temperatures, droughts and water shortage, and the increased movement of people and goods around the world, have facilitated and increased the risk of transmission of this virus in European countries. Seroepidemiological surveys of WNV are useful to understand the real spread of the virus in wild populations and prevent contagion to humans. This work was supported by the project UIDB/00772/2020 (doi:10.54499/UIDB/00772/2020) funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Pre-hospital detection of intrahepatic biliary duct dilatation: recognizing the abundance of vessels in the liver

    No full text
Diagnosing and confirming intrahepatic biliary duct dilation (IHBDD) involves a coordinated effort across multiple medical specialties, often relying on comprehensive blood analysis. However, the utility of screening ultrasound in detecting intrahepatic biliary dilation becomes particularly valuable in pre-hospital settings like our Basic Emergency Service, especially when access to alternative imaging techniques or detailed blood analyses are unavailable. Detecting the intrahepatic biliary dilation pattern through ultrasound is notably straightforward for a skilled sonographer. The presence of IHBDD can be efficiently identified during a screening ultrasound, allowing identification of imaging findings that help differentiate simple biliary colic from clinical cases that should be prompt referral to the reference hospital and without unnecessary delays or resource expenditure. The etiology of IHBDD is multifactorial1, and while its presentations may vary, the characteristic ultrasound pattern often involves the visualization of “extra vessels within the liver,” related to the distinctive “shotgun” sign2. This sign translates into the observation of dilated bile ducts exhibiting no flow on Doppler imaging3. In cases of extrahepatic obstruction, dilation of the common bile duct (CBD) may be evident. However, with intrahepatic obstruction, a normal CBD caliber can occur. Thus, the sonographer needs to diligently observe the signs outlined and typical sonographic landmarks to identify early indications of bile duct dilation within the innermost or regions of the liver

This dataset is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence OGL.Data were provided by national measuring agencies following a selection process from their wider networks. Following submission of data and metadata to the ROBIN Network, a quality control process was conducted centrally to assess the quality and suitability of the station's inclusion in the dataset. Daily streamflow records were visually screened for change points, visually anomalous conditions indicating methodology changes or infilled data gaps and obvious errors in the data. Stations were removed if they showed signs of not having a sufficiently ‘near-natural' regime, and edits were made over datasets to remove obviously erroneous data period

    No full text
Abstract: The present study aimed to observe, from a relational perspective, the levels of body composition and motor competence in children in the 1st basic cycle. To this end, we developed a quantitative study, with a sample of 200 children aged between 6 and 10 years, of both genders. The instruments used in the study were the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) scales, to assess motor competence and the Bioimpedance Scale (Inbody), to assess body composition. The results obtained reveal variations in the Body Mass Index (BMI), muscle mass and fat mass of children throughout the school years, showing a tendency towards worse results in both variables as the school year progresses. We can thus conclude that, on average, only in the 1st Year do children present normal levels of body composition and in Motor Competence only children in the 2nd Year present normal values for their age, presenting values above the average in all remaining school years. These results highlight the urgent need for intervention in primary schools to combat childhood obesity and motor illiteracy by promoting more moments of physical activity such as playing outdoors

Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour on Cardiovascular Risk and Health-Related Quality of Life in Adults: A Systematic Review

    No full text
Background: This systematic review analysed the association between objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour with cardiovascular risk and HRQoL in adults without previous CVD. Additionally, we analysed the impact of the intensity of the physical activity in this association. Methods: The search was carried out in three electronic databases with access until February 2023 to find studies with an observational design. For quality assessment, we used The National Institute of Health (NIH) Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. Results: We identified 5819 references, but only five studies were included. One study shows a positive association between physical activity and HRQoL, while sedentary behaviour was negatively related to HRQoL. Another study showed an association between high-intensity physical activity with a better physical component of HRQoL and low-intensity physical activity with a better mental component of HRQoL. Three studies concluded that higher levels of physical activity are associated with lower levels of cardiovascular risk and higher levels of sedentary behaviour are associated with higher levels of cardiovascular risk. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that people who spend more time being active and spend less time being sedentary appear to have lower cardiovascular risk and higher HRQoL.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: Design teaching has been advancing the development of skills in the face of the growing complexity of reality. With a theoretical framework built from recent contributions on the topic, we carried out an explora tory study involving design students. With the aim of understanding the conditions for approaching complex problems, we reflect more broadly on the teaching-learning context of the 21st century. The students ad dressed a complex problem, a real problem posed by a real interlocutor. We begin by assessing the students' perception of environmental condi tions and the particularities inherent to intrapersonal aspects. Allowing them to choose the level of approach to the problem, we observed their performance in autonomous interaction sessions with the interlocutor, previously prepared. We completed the data under analysis with the rea sons identified by the students themselves for their performance. Based on the results, we formulated a set of questions about the conditions of the teaching-learning context, which can contribute to developing and deepening reflection on the challenges posed to design teaching by the need to approach complexity. From our perspective, the conditions to which teaching contexts must respond will have to allow the response to complexity to be achieved through the mastery of skills whose focus is directed towards the problems

    Irrigation, engineering and food producion

The present chapter will focus on the water use in agricultural activity, under Mediterranean edaphoclimatic conditions, with very particular characteristics, such as climatic irregularity, the absence of precipitation in the summer months, and, in many years, much rainfall in the winter months, that can require the installation of drainage systems. Despite these climatic adversities, these climatic conditions are very good, many times the best conditions, for some crops, like olives, tomatoes, grapes, dry fruits, some vegetables, and others less important (Neira et al, 2024). Considering the importance of water in these climatic conditions, this chapter will look at three realities in three different countries in the Mediterranean basin, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, which highlight the importance of using water to obtain qualified agricultural production and high yields for farmers (Zagaria et al, 2023). In addition, climate change is altering precipitation patterns, leading to longer and more frequent droughts, as well as flooding during short periods (CanatárioDuarte et al, 2022). Overexploitation of aquifers and contamination of water sources has led to a reduction in the availability of freshwater, raising serious concerns for agricultural production (Rojas-Downing et al, 2017). The Mediterranean region is known for its agricultural diversity, where the production of crops such as olives, grapes, citrus fruits, and vegetables is essential for the local economy and the culture of the countries that comprise it. However, this region also faces significant challenges related to climate change, which affect water availability and, consequently, agricultural production. Agriculture is a key component of food security, which refers to access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet the dietary needs of a population. As the global population and food demand continue to grow, more intensive agricultural production approaches are required, especially in the Mediterranean region, where agriculture is vital for local economies. In a context where the population continues to grow, efficient water management becomes crucial to ensure food security and the sustainability of agriculture in the Mediterranean basin (FAO, 2020). Water is a vital resource, not only for crop growth but also for the livelihood of rural communities that depend on agriculture as their main source of income. Also, water is fundamental for photosynthesis, nutrient transport, and temperature regulation in plants (World Bank, 2016).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
