Abstract:
The work presented here is the result of a curricular internship, carried out at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Castelo Branco, as part of the Master's programme in Graphic Design taught at the School of Applied Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, in association with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
The aim was to understand how communication design contributes to the development of an institutional image, specifically that of a social institution.
To this end, the research was based on a mixed methodology, interventionist and non interventionist.
The non-interventionist research phase corresponds to active research and literary criticism of the most important themes for the development of the work carried out during the internship and afterwards, in the development of the signage project for one of SC's centres. The interventionist research consisted of developing more appealing communications for the SCMCB, trying to create integrated communication; identifying the problem and the need to create a signage system, as well as analysing reference case studies in the area of signage,
especially in information and orientation systems implemented for audiences with reduced capacities, and carrying out and interpreting surveys in order to develop a signage system appropriate to the context.
The purpose of this internship was to develop an appealing and effective visual communication, in the communication developed during the internship and an independent signage project that facilitates orientation in the SC buildings, solving problems relating to the mobility of adults with motor disabilities and reduced cognitive abilities associated with ageing
Production of simple sugars from olive grove pruning using acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis
The purpose of this paper was to optimize the production of simple sugars from olive
grove pruning (OGP) using acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. This study was based on
a model composition corresponding to a 34 orthogonal factorial design and employed the
response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the pretreatment and hydrolysis conditions,
aiming to attain maximum glucose, xylose and arabinose extraction from cellulose and
hemicellulose of biomass. The pretreatment operating conditions considered for optimization,
were temperature (60–180 °C), residence time (30–120 min) and sulphuric acid concentration
(0.5–5% w w-1). Enzymatic hydrolysis experiments on solid fraction pretreated with diluted acid
were performed at a solid concentration of 5% (w v-1, based on dry weight), using 50 mM citrate
buffer pH 4.8 with BSA at a concentration of 60 mg g-1 dry biomass. The reaction mixture was
incubated at 50 °C for 174 h on an orbital shaker at 150 rpm. Three commercial enzyme
preparations (cellulase complex, b-glucosidase and xylanase) were used in enzymatic
saccharification. Total carbohydrate content of the initial biomass was 51.25% (in dry mass), of
which glucose was the major constituent with 33.59%. Contents of lignin and extractable found
in biomass were 24.96% and 15.84%, respectively. In this work, it was possible to extract 93.1%
of the sugars present in the olive grove pruning, with pretreatments carried out for 102 min at
156 °C with a sulfuric acid load of 4.09% (w w-1), followed by enzymatic hydrolysis performed
for 174 h, with an enzyme loading of 18 PFU, 36 p-NPGU and 36 IU per gram of substrate.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Renal screening sonography. A comparative study in a Portuguese basic emergency service
Introduction: This study intends to compare the accuracy and pertinence of sonographic findings obtained by a sonographer in a Basic Emergency Service
(BES) with the imaging findings at the Referral Hospital (RH).
Methods: Thirty-one patients suspected of having renal pathology underwent initial renal sonography screening with sonographer reporting at the BES and were subsequently referred to the RH for additional imaging examinations. The results of both examinations were compared to verify whether the findings
from the BES were confirmed by the radiologist in the RH and to ensure that the patient referrals from BES to RH were appropriate.
Results: In our sample, most patients (80%) exhibited varying degrees of pyelocaliceal distension, with nearly half (48%) presenting obstructions. A strong association between the sonographic findings in the BES and the RH was found in the variables “Dilatation of pyelocaliceal system” (V=0.895; p=0.000), “Simple cystic formation” (V=0.878; p=0.000), respectively. There was a statistically significant correlation between BES and RH findings, indicating a strong association between these two variables respectively (k=0.890; p=0.000) and (k=0.870; p=0.000). In this research, an achieved sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 85% were demonstrated in the identification of pyelocaliceal dilatation.
Conclusion: Renal sonographer reporting screening successfully detected abnormalities in the urinary system of patients suspected of having renal colic.
The sonographic data obtained at the BES demonstrated a strong correlation with the additional imaging findings from the RH in Portugal. These results
suggest that Radiographers/Sonographers can have an important role in the preliminary assessment of urgent renal pathology in remote areas, contributing
to a correct referral and early treatment
The need as the fundament of art: Otto Wagner’s architectural contributions to the idea of the sustainable city I
This research develops the architectural contributions of Otto Wagner [1841-1918] to the idea of the Sustainable City. For this propose we will use as guiding concept “the need”, since for Wagner it would be the fundament of art, and therefore, the fundament of architectural practice. Emphasis will be located on the Wagnerian notion of “metropolis”, that is understood as the model proposed by Wagner in Vienna that would represent the solu tion for the Sustainable City. Also, we will argue that Otto Wagner was an architect that conceived the city as a living system, since the “apparent functionality” of a built environment is not the objective of architectural practice, instead the objective is to resolve the needs of citizens who dwell the city. This need will have an aesthetic but also a ethics connotation, it is what we will call “true functionality”, we contend that Wagner’s proposal resonates profoundly with contemporary concerns, aligning closely with the objectives outlined in the 11th goal (point 2nd and 3rd) of the “Sustainable Development Goals” of the United Nations [2015] and the European Un ion’s “New European Bauhaus” initiative [2021]. Through this examination, we highlight the enduring relevance of Wagner’s ideas and their potential applicability to the challenges of the 21st century.
Perception of Portuguese teachers (special education) on the impacts of their training and practical experience in the inclusive context
Abstract: Using a mixed methodology (exploratory, cross-sectional, descriptive, explanatory, and analytical study conducted in 2023), we addressed the impacts of training and practical experience of Portuguese special education teachers in the context of inclusive education, considering current legislation and pedagogical differentiation. A survey questionnaire (sample of N=72 teachers from the 2nd and 3rd Cycles of Basic Education) was applied, along with document analysis, non-participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with the responsible parties. The data were subjected to statistical treatment (Chi-square, Fisher’s test) and content analysis, enabling the verification of the following questions: analyzing the pedagogical practice of the "inclusive teacher"; understanding teachers' opinions on inclusive measures; comprehending the teaching profession within the scope of special education for inclusion and inclusive learning; investigating whether training and experience lead to better success for students with special educational needs (SEN); and determining if the measures implemented in schools promote inclusion. The results confirmed that teachers are familiar with the legal framework and that training (both initial and ongoing) is crucial for the implementation of appropriate strategies.CeiED da ULHT of Lisbon and FC
Pedagogo Português da Escola Nova na 1.º República (1910-26), Ditadura Militar (1926-28) e Estado Novo (1928-1974): Joaquim Tomás (1873-1973)
Study of a historical-documentary and/or bibliographical nature around the pedagogical figure of Joaquim Tomás, using hermeneutic methodology in the analysis and interpretation of sources (primary, secondary), complemented with interviews with a relative of his, which allowed us to historically reconstruct the life path and primary school teacher/inspector, admirer of the ideals of the New School and innovative school experiences in Europe. The hermeneutic method, indebted to the text/language and mediator in the research and interpretation of documentary sources, made us contextualize this figure of pedagogue in the socio-historical and political time in which he lived. We were guided by the following objectives: analyzing the work and actions of J. Tomás in the historical period of his life; understand in light of the time (context), the author, documentary authenticity and reliability, the nature of the argumentative interpretation related to education/teaching and modern pedagogy; identify J. Tomás within the ideas of the Escola Nova movement; value this pedagogical figure for the History of Education. In this rescue of individual memory for the collective in the field of Education, we wanted to deepen J. Tomás' contributions to the History of Education in Portugal and, mainly, his didactic-pedagogical aspect of primary education.
Neste resgate do indivíduo memória para o colectivo no campo da Educação, quisemos aprofundar os contributos de J. This work was supported by the FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. Furthermore, we would like to thank the CERNAS, CIDEI, and UCISA:E Research Centers and the Polytechnic University of Viseu for their support. This research was developed in the ambit of project “EISuFood—Edible Insects as Sustainable Food”, with Reference CERNAS-IPV/2020/003 (10.54499/UIDP/00681/2020).This study explores the perceptions about edible insects and their usage in modern gastronomy. Data were collected through questionnaire survey in 14 countries, and 7222 responses were obtained. ANOVA and factor analysis were used, respectively to evaluate differences between groups and to analyze the scale items. The results showed that participants showed higher agreement toward insects being considered exotic foods and being associated with taboos and neophobia. Some sociodemographic factors (country, age class, education level and income) were proven to significantly influence with the perceptions. while sex and living environment did not. Factor analysis extracted three factors, one associated with the uses of insects in gastronomy, another associated with insects as foods and a third about insects not being proper for human consumption. In conclusion, the work revealed differences between countries in the perceptions about edible insects, and that these perceptions were also significantly influenced according to other sociodemographic variables. This work is funded by National Funds through the FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within the scope of the projects Ref. Effect of alternating temperature regimes on seed germination of guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.]
Guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.] 2n=14, is an annual crop that belongs to the Fabaceae family and has a spring–summer growth cycle. This species has been assuming increasing importance among agro-industrial crops due to the high galactomannan content of its seeds for which a multitude of food and non-food applications have been developed. Guar is a viable rotation crop for growers in Mediterranean areas and can result in diversification in crop production systems. The effects of four alternating day/night temperature regimens on C. tetragonoloba seed germination were tested: (T1) 23/15 °C, (T2) 21/13 °C, (T3) 19/ 11 °C, and (T4) 17/09 °C with a 16/08 h light/dark photoperiod, respectively. Seeds from two guar cultivars (RGC-0936 and RGC-1066) were used. Treatments consisted of four replicates of 50 seeds each, arranged in a split-plot design with temperatures as the main plot and cultivars as the subplot. The results showed that lower temperatures reduced guar seed germination. The highest germination percentages were obtained at the 21/13 °C and 23/15 °C temperature regimens, while a significant drop in germination percentage occurred for the 19/11 °C treatment, and the lowest germination percentages were observed at 17/09 °C. No statistically significant differences were found between the two cultivars studied for seed germination percentages. The interaction effects among the different alternative temperature regimes on seed germination and guar cultivars were not statistically significantly different. The values obtained at the 21/13 °C temperature treatment allow us to conclude that this regimen is the minimum acceptable combination of temperatures to program the sowing date.CERNAS-IPCB [UIDB/00681/2020] is funding by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
