Bee pollen and bee bread as source of protein and bioactive compounds

    No full text
The need for diets with adequate amounts of proteins and essential amino acids is increasingly demonstrated. For chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegeneration, dietary interventions can sometimes serve as a treatment strategy. This request is important even for other target populations such as malnourished children or the elderly, but also vegetarians and/or athletes. For all these situations, meat, fish and eggs are available on the market as sources of protein, but in vegetarian and/or calorie-restricted eating plans it is always a problem to find sources of protein, so we must consider looking for new options. Both bee pollen and bee bread are, depending on the botanical origin, a possible choice. These products are also a source of minerals and vitamins, providing added value to complement an unbalanced diet and boost the immune system. Many other constituents of these two bee products can also be used in drug discovery to develop new medicines and/or contribute to other therapeutic strategies. The best known are phenolic and polyphenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioactivity, among many other applications. More recent research reveals that bee pollen and bee bread are also good sources of spermidines. These compounds have emerged as well-tolerable calorie restriction mimetics targeting several age-associated molecular and physiological adversities. To ensure that all possible applications of these two products obtain the best final result, product quality control must be guaranteed. For Bee Pollen, the ISO standard was already completed in 2023, ISO 24382:2023- Bee pollen Specifications. Currently, the same group (ISO/TC 34/SC 19/WG 3) has started working on the Project ISO/AWI 25097 - Management standards for the production and packaging of bee pollen. Additionally, they intend to propose a new project related to Bee Bread. Another advance was a compilation of Standard Methods that can be used for analytical control (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/00218839.2021.1948240), published by the Bee Pollen Working Group of the International Honey Commission in 2021. In conclusion, conditions exist to allow bee pollen and bee bread to be high- quality dietary products. The Coimbra Chemistry Centre (CQC) is supported by the FCT through the projects UIDB/00313/2020 (DOI:10.54499/UIDB/00313/2020) and UIDP/00313/2020 (DOI:10.54499/UIDP/00313/2020); CERNAS-IPCB, UIDB/00681/2020 (DOI:10.54499/UIDP/00681/2020); CEF, UIDB/00239/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/UIDB/00239/2020) and TERRA (DOI: 10.54499/LA/P/0092/2020)

In-bed posture classification using pressure data from a sensor sheet under the mattress

    No full text
Monitoring and controlling the condition of bedridden individuals can help reduce health risks, as improper nocturnal habits or body positioning can exacerbate issues such as apnea, insomnia, sleep disorders, spinal problems, and pressure ulcers. Techniques using pressure maps from sensors placed on top of the mattress, along with machine learning (ML) algorithms to classify main postures (prone, supine, left side, right side), have achieved up to 99% accuracy. This study evaluated the feasibility of using a sensor sheet placed under the mattress to minimize patient discomfort. Experiments with ten commonly used ML algorithms achieved average accuracy values ranging from 79.14% to 98.93% using K-Fold cross-validation and from 80.03% to 97.14% using Leave-One-Group-Out (LOGO) for classifying the four main postures. The classification was extended to include 28 posture variations (7 variations for each of the 4 main postures), with the SVM algorithm achieving an accuracy of 65.18% in K-Fold validation, marking a significant improvement over previous studies, particularly regarding the number of postures considered. Comparisons with previous studies that used pressure sensors placed both under and on top of the mattress show that this approach achieves comparable accuracy to other methods, surpassing them with some algorithms and achieving the highest average accuracy. In conclusion, using sensors under the mattress is an effective and less invasive alternative for posture classification.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract : We consider mental health as a fundamental hu-man value, the state of which must be maintained throughout university education. This study delves into the psychological effects of vocal therapy on university music students, addressing a gap in research on targeted mental health interven-tions for this group. Amidst the unique pressures of music education, this research examines how vocal therapy can aid in emotional release and per-sonal expression, potentially influencing students’ coping strategies, social connectedness, mental health, and overall resilience. Coping strategies and social connectedness are key factors that en-sure students' resilience to various life challenges and stresses. Developing and maintaining these aspects of mental health not only helps students cope with current tasks and problems but also lays the foundation for their successful adaptation and growth in the future. We have employed the following validated instruments: Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI), Short Form-36 (SF-36), UCLA Loneliness Scale, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The study compares students undergoing vocal therapy with those who are not. These findings underscore the efficacy of vocal therapy as a com-prehensive intervention, advocating for its integra-tion into university mental health services. This study contributes to the growing field of music therapy and mental health, offering essential in-sights for educational institutions, mental health professionals, and music educatorsConsideramos a saúde mental um valor humano fundamental, cujo estado deve ser mantido durante todo o ensino universitário. Empregamos os seguintes instrumentos validados: Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI), Short Form-36 (SF-36), UCLA Loneliness Scale, Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) e Connor--Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC).

Serological evidence of West Nile virus in wild birds in Portugal

    No full text
West Nile virus (WNV) has a zoonotic transmission cycle. Avian species are considered the definitive hosts, and mosquitoes and other arthropods are the main vectors. Humans are considered accidental and dead-end hosts, since mammals are unable to efficiently amplify the virus. We aimed at studying serological prevalence of WNV circulation in wild birds in Portugal. Three hundred and six individuals belonging to 34 different species and 11 orders were sampled, , and tested with a commercial ELISA kit for antibodies to WNV. Results were positive for 64 samples (20.9%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.5-25.9%) as follows: Accipitriformes (n=44; 23%; 95% CI: 17.3-29.7%), Ciconiiformes (n=4; 9.3%¸95% CI: 2.6- 22.1%), Columbiformes (n=1; 16.7%¸95% CI: 0.4-64.1%), Otidiformes (n=1; 2.5%; 95% CI: 0.0- 97.5), and Strigiformes (n=14; 31.1%¸95% CI: 18.2-46.7%). So far, serological and molecular evidence of WNV circulation was mostly restricted to the southern part of the country, and our preliminary results found antibodies to WNV in samples collected from birds in the North of Portugal. Climate has been recognized as one of the main factors influencing WNV activity and dispersal. With the changes that have taken place in recent years at a global level, new studies are needed to assess the real epidemic situation of the virus in Portugal. To the CERAS and CRAS-HVUTAD teams, for their help in collecting samples. Uncertainties in plant species niche modeling under climate change scenarios

    Get PDF
Species distribution models (SDMs) have been used to forecast the impact of climate change on species’ potential distribution, with results that might support decisions for conservation and biodiversity management. Despite their vulnerability to parameterization and data quality input, SDM use has been increasing in the last decades. In fact, inappropriate inputs and the lack of awareness about the effects of methodological decisions on results can lead to potential unreliability in results, a problem that might gain relevance when SDMs are used to predict climate change impacts on species-suitable areas. Aiming to assess how far such a topic is considered, an analysis of the calibration data and methodological decisions was conducted for recent publications (2018 to 2022) that include SDMs in this context, aiming to identify putative deviations from the consensual best practices. Results show that the parameters presented more consistently are the algorithm in use (MaxEnt was used in 98% of the studies), theinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
