In vitro propagation and conservation of Lavandula stoechas subsp. luisieri and Pterospartum tridentatum: two important medicinal and aromatic species from Portugal
Lavandula stoechas subsp. luisieri and Pterospartum tridentatum are two valuable aromatic and medicinal plants. Their biometric and morphological parameters, such as the number of new shoots, length of the longest shoot, multiplication rate, and fresh weight, were evaluated using the multiplication MS medium protocol. The rooting protocols involved immersing the explants in IBA (1 g L−1) and a commercial IBA (3.3 g L−1) preparation (Clonex®). Slow-growth conservation assays were carried out using two different sucrose concentrations (15 g L−1 and 30 g L−1), and a control, with the cultures kept at 4 °C for 12 months. The multiplication rate for L. stoechas subsp. luisieri was 6.8, and that of P. tridentatum was 13.3, achieved using the MS medium supplemented with 0.2 mg L−1 BAP, 1 mg L−1 BAP, and 0.5 mg L−1 IBA. The application of Clonex® showed the best ex vitro rooting results in L. stoechas subsp. luisieri (77%) and P. tridentatum (90%). In the slow-growth conservation assays, at 4 °C, in darkness for 12 months, an excellent survival rate was achieved in L. stoechas subsp. luisieri (>80%) and P. tridentatum (>90%), even at the reduced sucrose concentration. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of in vitro multiplication and ex vitro rooting protocols for two valuable aromatic and medicinal plants. These findings are significant for the ex situ conservation of these species, as they provide effective long-term preservation and utilization strategies. This research was funded by the Research Centre for Natural Resources, Environment and Society (CERNAS-IPCB) (project UIDB/00681/2020), by the Portuguese National Funding Agency for Science, Research and Technology (FCT), and by the La Caixa Foundation and Portuguese Funding Agency for Science, Research and Technology, under project PD21-00003.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Biomechanical analysis of technical actions used in the 2021 European Judo Championship – Behavioral Patterns And Effectiveness.
In Judo, each motor action depends greatly on the behavioural and technical variability of each judoka, which largely determines the options and the predominance of biomechanical actions inherent to the movements themselves. The objective was to biomechanically analyse the technical actions used in the 2021 European Judo Championships based on combat time and gold score and verify the effectiveness of these same technical actions both genders. The study sample focused on 400 combats of the European Judo Championship 2021. We used an observation system created for this purpose, according to the classification system proposed by Sacripanti. Cross-frequency tables were produced, where the association degree between variables was analysed using the Chi Square test, where the significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. We complemented the association analysis between variables by calculating the adjusted standardized residuals. In both genders and phases of combat, the use of binary techniques predominated over lever techniques,
with the hierarchy of technical resources used by judokas being identical. In golden score, women showed a significant association with the use of trunk-leg binary techniques. Throughout the fights, women registered differences in the use of groups of techniques. The trunk-leg binary and minimum arm lever techniques revealed significant effectiveness in both phases of combat in both the male and female categories.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Enhancing honey quality control using vibrational spectroscopy techniques
Ensuring the quality of honey is vital for consumer safety, product authenticity, and maintaining its market value. Given honey's economic importance, developing a rapid and cost-effective method to certify its quality is essential. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflection (FTIR-ATR) and FT-RAMAN techniques have been extensively used in food analysis, particularly for honey. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of these two techniques in the quality control of honey. Calibration models were performed using Partial Least Squares Regression models for the parameters of total acidity, reducing sugars, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), electrical conductivity, ash content, proline content, diastase index, total flavonoids and phenolic compounds content. The calibration models for each parameter demonstrated determination coefficients greater than 0.965 for FTIR-ATR and greater than 0.983 for FT-RAMAN. The residual prediction deviation (RPD) values were higher than 5.5 for FTIR-ATR and higher than 7.6 for FT-RAMAN. Although both techniques provided excellent results, it can be concluded that FT-RAMAN is a more accurate technique compared to FTIR-ATR for the evaluation of the physicochemical characteristics of honey. This work was supported by Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) for their financial support through national funds FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) to CERNAS-IPCB, UIDB/00681/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/UIDP/00681/2020); CIMO (UIDB/00690/2020 and UIDP/00690/2020) and SusTEC (LA/P/0007/2021)
