GIS based approach to analyse the relationship between land units and land use in the Central Region of Portugal

    No full text
Land units refer to coherent spatial areas characterized by a degree of homogeneity concerning certain properties like geology, soils, and climate. The Land use mosaic corresponds to a circumstantial layer representing the landscape’s present state, depicting the present resource allocation factors. Nevertheless, the stable potential layer is related to the stable characteristics of each site and allows the identification of use constraints or potentials. In this study, we use a methodology based on the land unit concept to define a stable potential layer at a regional level. Therefore, land units were delimited for the Central region of Portugal, resulting from the combination of geomorphology, soil parent material, and bioclimatic influence. For each land unit, representative sample areas were characterized in terms of their land use mosaic characteristics. For that purpose, selected landscape metrics were used to quantify the land use mosaic geometrical attributes: Shannon’s Diversity Index, Edge Density, Mean Patch Size, and Number of Patches. The existing land use types were also quantified. Finally, a cluster analysis was performed to define groups of samples representing the land units with similar land-use mosaic types. The landscape metrics that best explain the influence of the permanent structure of the territory on the circumstantial structure of use are Shannon's Diversity Index, Edge Density, and Number of Patches. The highest diversity land cover patterns are located in formations with a lithology rich to very rich in silica under Mesomediterranean dry to subhumid climate. The validation of the previously defined land units confirmed the reliability of the proposed methodology, with most of the land units strongly influencing the land-use mosaic. The delimitation and characterization of homogeneous land units are useful for the definition of soil suitability and for the choice of the most appropriate uses and activities by the stakeholders. This work is supported with Portuguese national funds by FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., within theGEOBIOTEC - Project UIDB/04035/2020.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Compositional signature of trace elements in stream sediments along the Babahoyo/Daule riverbeds (Ecuador): A geostatistical and Bayesian approach

    No full text
The high concentration of potencially toxic elements (PTEs) in stream sediments may pose a significant threat since the pollutants may travel long distances to the sea, affecting aquatic environments and public health. When rivers cross large cities, minning, or cultivated areas, it is usually observing an increasing concentration of PTEs downstream, reachiong hazardeous levels due to the ability and persistence oh heavy metals by bioaccumulation in the enviromnent

Influence of breastfeeding type and gender on child development : differences in global and fine motor skills

    No full text
Background: There are few studies that approach the subject of breastfeeding related to the development of motor skills. The study aimed to verify if there are differences in the global and fine motor skills, considering the variables gender and type of breastfeeding, in children from 18 to 44 months. Methods: We developed a quantitative correctional typology, being a cross-sectional study with a sample of 128 children of both genders. The instruments used in the study were the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2, and to assess the profile of the children a questionnaire was delivered to the parents. To test the normality of the sample, we applied the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test and the Shapiro-Wilk Test. The Mann-Whitney U-Test was used for independent samples, also calculating the effect size. Results: The boys obtained higher mean values in all motor skills, except for the fine motor skills and fine motricity, and in these, the girls obtainied the higher mean values. With respect to the inferential analysis, concerning the variable gender, there are statistically significant differences (P<0.00) in the variables: locomotor skills, object handling skills, global motricity and global motor quotient (P=0.017) the boys exhibiting the higher values, which means the better performances. We also verify that children who were not breastfed with breast milk, through feeding bottle with replacement milk, obtained higher mean values in all motor skills when compared to the ones who were breastfed with breast milk, and there is a statistically significant difference in the variable fine manipulation skills (P=0.024). Conclusions: Male children obtained better results in all motor skills, except for fine motricity, comparing with female children. Regarding breastfeeding, the children who were not breastfed with breast milk, show better results, mainly in Fine manipulation skills, which may be due to the previous need to handle the bottle on early age.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

How the “Olive Oil Polyphenols” health claim depends on anthracnose and olive fly on fruits

    Get PDF
Olive anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum fungi, and the olive fruit fly Bactrocera olea are, respectively, the most important fungal disease and pest affecting olive fruits worldwide, leading to detrimental effects on the yield and quality of fruits and olive oil. This study focuses on the content of hydroxytyrosol (HYT) and its derivatives (the “olive oil polyphenols” health claim) in olive oils extracted from fruits of ‘Galega Vulgar’ and ‘Cobrançosa’ cultivars, naturally affected by olive anthracnose and olive fly. The olives, with different damage levels, were harvested from organic rainfed orchards, located in the center of Portugal, at four harvest times over three years. Galega oils extracted from olives with a higher anthracnose and olive fly incidence showed no conformity for the extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and virgin olive oil (VOO) categories, presenting high acidity and negative sensory notes accompanied by the disappearance of oleacein. Conversely, no sensory defects were observed in Cobrançosa oils, regardless of disease and pest incidence levels, and quality criteria were still in accordance with the EVOO category. The total HYT and tyrosol (TYR) content (>5 mg/20 g) allows for the use of the “olive oil polyphenols” health claim on the label of all the analyzed Cobrançosa olive oils. This work was funded by national funds through FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under the project UIDB/04129/2020 of the LEAF—Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food—research unit, and the research project PTDC/ASP-PLA/28547/2017.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Education in values develops in the family, in schools and in society in general, through human coexistence and interpersonal relationships. The problem of education for values constitutes a transversal theme across the curricular areas of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education In the education for values in students' compulsory education is contributing to their formation as people and citizens. The study is part of the Cross-Border Project ‘Emotional Intelligence Program in students from the 1st CEB Castelo Branco region: Developing social/emotional skills 2012-2017’ (Protocol between the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco and the Extremadura University - Faculty of Education of Badajoz). The research problem was the following: What is the hierarchy and valuation made by 1st year students (ages between 6-7 years old) of the 1st CEB of an urban basic school in the Portuguese city of Castelo Branco on the values analyzed and shown in prints/images, during the implementation of an Intervention Program to train for citizenship? The objectives underlying the problem were: knowing and identifying values; valuing values hierarchically; recognize values and countervalues through prints/images; identify the essential values to be an active citizen; assign values to others through school coexistence; promote positive attitudes and values (thoughts, habits). The investigation was qualitative in nature, with action research methodology, in a 1st year class of the 1st CEB (N=18) of a basic school belonging to the School Group (designated -AENACB), in the city of Castelo Branco, in the region from the interior of Portugal, in the 2021-22 academic year. We comply with the principles of protocol, ethical and legal standards and procedures for applying techniques. As part of action research, we developed an intervention program ‘Educating Values’ within the scope of citizenship training. In this Program we considered interpersonal and social relationships, school and community life, the right and duty to participate and live in society with others (social coexistence, civic habits and citizenship). We wanted to know the appreciation and prioritization of current values by students, the distinction between values and countervalues and the citizen's valuing attribution.Centro de Investigação CeiED da ULHT e financiado pela FCT; Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Brancoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Physical fitness in children in Cabo Verde: differences between gender, eutrophic vs. overweight subjects, and practitioners vs. non-practitioners of sports

    No full text
BACKGROUND: There are few or even rare studies conducted in Cabo Verde (Republic of Cabo Verde) that address the issue of physical fitness and body composition in the juvenile population. This investigation aims to study the physical fitness in children in Cabo Verde: differences between gender, eutrophic, and overweight subjects, between practitioners and non-practitioners of sports. METHODS: The sample consisted of 93 individuals aged between 10 and 15 years, from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary school of the Portuguese College based in Cabo Verde. The instruments used for data collection were the FITescola® test battery (Lisboa, Portugal), and the questionnaire Quantification de l’activite physique en altitude chez les enfants (QAPACE) for assessment of physical activity level. Regarding the statistical analysis using the SPSS 23.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), the first analysis was performed to verify the distribution of the sample (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test and Shapiro-Wilk Test). Then, for variables with normal distribution we used the t-test and for the remaining variables with non-normal distribution we used the Mann-Whitney Test, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Gender differences were found, in which the male gender obtained more favorable mean values in the “sit-ups,” “push-ups,” “horizontal impulsion,” “shuttle” and “agility” variables, while the females showed superiority in the variables “sit and reach;” differences between the eutrophic and overweight group where, as expected, more favorable mean values for eutrophics than the overweight group in all PF tests. Finally, differences between practitioners and non-practitioners of sports, with the best results being attributed to practitioners of sports. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that male subjects have greater proficiency in strength and aerobic fitness tests while female subjects have greater flexibility. High BMI values in overweight children have been found to be associated with increased abdominal fat as well as a reduction in overall PF. As expected, sports practitioners show better results in motor performance on PF tests.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
