Associations between body mass index, physical activity, perceived school competence, and academic performance in Portuguese elementary students
Informed consent was obtained from all subjects involved in the study.
The data presented in this study are available on request from the corresponding author due to data protection restrictions for minors.Background/Objectives: Childhood is a critical stage for consolidating health-related habits that shape physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. Regular physical activity has been linked to fitness and academic outcomes, while high body mass index (BMI) may hinder school performance. This study examined associations between BMI, perceived school competence, academic performance, and weekly physical activity volume in Portuguese elementary students, addressing a gap in national evidence compared with international studies.
Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted with 531 children (M = 9.13 years) from 10 public schools. BMI was calculated from anthropometric measures, weekly physical activity was self-reported, perceived competence was assessed with Harter’s Self-Concept Scale (Cronbach’s α = 0.797), and academic performance was obtained from school records. Analyses included Pearson correlations, ANOVA with Scheffé post hoc, and multiple regression, with exact significance values reported. Results: Higher BMI was negatively associated with perceived competence and academic achievement, while regular physical activity, particularly 4–6 h per week, was linked to better results in Portuguese and mathematics. Associations were modest (r = 0.18–0.32; R2 = 0.12). Regression showed physical activity (β = 0.093, p = 0.033) and perceived competence (β = 0.126, p = 0.004) predicted academic performance, whereas BMI was not (β = −0.028, p = 0.524). The near-zero correlation with environmental studies suggests subject-specific influences.
Conclusions: Adequate BMI and regular physical activity are associated with better academic performance. The role of perceived competence is theoretically inferred as a potential mediator, but not formally tested. Findings highlight the interplay of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors. Structured school-based activity programs of 4–6 h weekly may promote both health and learning.FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia—Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. The interplay of bottle storage and wood ageing technology: Volatile and sensory profiles of wine spirits aged with chestnut wood
Wine spirits are typically aged in wooden barrels. Recently, alternative ageing technologies, such as those using wood fragments in wine spirits stored in stainless steel tanks, have been investigated. However, a signifcant lack of information regarding the potential evolution of these beverages after bottling still remains. This study assessed the 12-month evolu tion of aroma in bottled wine spirits aged with chestnut wood using diferent technologies, including fragment application with several micro-oxygenation strategies and barrels (traditional). Chemical analysis using GC-FID and GC–MS methods, along with sensory analysis, was conducted on all sampled aged wine spirits. Signifcant changes in volatile compounds were detected over time, including volatile phenols, acids, and esters. Multivariate data analysis distinguished traditional and alternative aged samples, with slight sample discrimination based on bottle storage. Regarding the sensory results, a
signifcant efect of the time in bottle in several sensory attributes was found, while the ageing technologies mainly afected the gustatory attributes. The tasters were also asked to rate the overall quality of the samples, which seems to be favoured by the time in the bottle. This initial assessment of the impact of 1 year of glass bottle storage on the volatile and sensory composition of aged wine spirits highlights that this stage must be considered as an additional technological factor in their production process. However, the diferences induced by the wood ageing technologies applied remained evident after 1 year of glass bottle storage. This study was supported by the research Project OXYRE BRAND, funded by National Funds through FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology under Project POCI-01–0145-FEDER-027819 (PTDC/OCE-ETA/27819/2017).
Abstract: Weddings are events full of symbolism and tradition, which have evolved to adapt to cultural, social and technological changes. One of the most important forms of communication at weddings is the use of invitations, which reflect the style and personality of the bride and groom. These elements use graphic, editorial and emotional design, becoming essential to create a coherent and personalized experience.
This dissertation deals with the role of communication design in the evolution of communication and promotion of weddings. It's objective is to explore how design contributes to the construction of visual and emotional narratives, analyzing its practical application in the personalization of events and in the harmonization between tradition and modernity.
To this end, through a qualitative and exploratory methodology, documentary analysis and the study of practical examples that illustrate the evolution of design in wedding invitations and stationery were used. Therefore, the research is organized into three parts. The first part presents the theoretical and contextual framework, exploring the conceptual foundations of communication design, graphic design and emotional design. The second part analyses weddings in Portugal, investigating the different styles and types of weddings and how these shape design choices and visual identity, as well as the historical evolution of weddings and their relationship with visual communication. The third part analyses different wedding invitations from different years, with the aim of understanding how these graphic communication elements have evolved and what changes they have undergone over time.
With this structure, the research seeks to understand the role of communication design in creating unique and meaningful visual experiences, exploring how elements such as typography, colours and materials contribute to the narrative and coherence of the event. The aim is to answer the question of how design can balance tradition and innovation in the communication and promotion of weddings.
The aim is therefore to understand how communication design can transform wedding communication in Portugal, creating experiences that reflect the essence of the bride and groom and celebrate the uniqueness of the event

We are also grateful to the GrowLIFE project (Grant Agreement No. 101074425, LIFE21-GIC-PT-GrowLIFE) for the opportunity to apply the methodology as part of its Work Package: Participatory Visits to Sustainable Farms, and to the PAGE Project (Ref: RR-C05-i03-I-000217) for the opportunity to implement the methodology within the scope of its initiatives. The agroecological transition of family farms in Portugal poses a significant challenge within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the European Green Deal. Despite their multifunctional contributions to rural territories, family farms—particularly smallholders—remain structurally disadvantaged by policy frameworks that continue to favor large-scale, high-input agricultural models. This study demonstrates that aligning family farming with agroecological principles yields tangible benefits and requires support through differentiated, typology-sensitive public policies. Using a tailored methodology, data were collected from 40 farms initially classified as conventional or agroecological. Ward’s hierarchical clustering, supported by complementary significance tests, identified three distinct farmer typologies:
conventional, proto-agroecological, and agroecological. These typologies reflect meaningful differences in ecological integration, systemic thinking, and social engagement. The findings highlight the need for targeted policy frameworks that recognize farm diversity and promote multiple pathways toward agroecology. This typology-based approach provides an empirically grounded foundation for designing more inclusive and context-responsive institutional support for family farmers in Portugal. The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. Boxing injuries in Portugal: analysis of incidence, mechanisms, risk factors and injury preventive measures
Introduction: Boxing is associated with a high rate of injuries and severe head trauma, where the head, shoulders, wrists and hands are the most affected regions of the body.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to quantify the incidence of boxing-related injuries and identify patterns and risk factors. Furthermore, the effectiveness of injury preventive measures
and behavioral adaptations after injury were analyzed.
Methodology: A questionnaire was used to collect data divided into three parts: personal data, training and exposure experience and injuries.
Results: 583 questionnaires were analyzed. Results showed that 76% were male, and 70,5% had never competed. Sparring was the technique that led to 34,3% injuries, and inflammation was the most common injury (28,1%).
Discussion: Literature shows that the incidence of injury has decreased in amateur boxing in recent years, remaining in professional boxing. The incidence of injury is higher in professional
boxing and sparring is the technique that leads to more injuries. Stretching appears to be the most common injury preventive measures after injury.
Conclusion: This study allows us to demonstrate that height, frequency of competition, level of competition and strength training are the factors most associated with the number of injuries
in boxing
In recent years, the analysis of teaching has been a subject that has been increasingly studied in depth in order to understand how various teaching behaviours are, or are not, more or less effective in the context of the learning of practitioners of various sports, in this specific case, the sport of Judo. The pedagogy and method of Judo was recognised by UNESCO. In fact, observing the coach's behaviour at different times during training allows for an exhaustive study of his pedagogical conduct, thus making it possible to identify the main characteristics and attributes that contribute to the practitioners' learning. Thus, this research arises from the need to characterise the behaviour of the coach in the sport of Judo, bearing in mind that as there are few studies in this field, the renewal of knowledge on this subject is important and should be done so that it is possible to explain and use the best methods/tools for teaching Judo.
Given this framework, this research, organised sequentially, aims to answer the question of whether the coaches' behaviours are similar or different during the training process, in the context of Regular Judo and Adapted Judo. To this end, four coaches from various associations and clubs in the districts of Aveiro, Guarda and Santarém took part in the study. At the training level, each of the coaches conducted an Adapted Judo training session and a Regular Judo training session at different times and places, making a total of 8 training sessions to be analysed (4 in each context). A total of 138 athletes took part in all the training sessions in the two contexts, 78 of whom attended the Regular Judo training sessions and 60 the Adapted Judo training sessions.
Bearing in mind the objectives of this study, in order to study its visible dimension, i.e. from the point of view of what is observable in the coaches' conduct of the teaching process, the training sessions were recorded on video for later observation. We therefore prioritised a cross-sectional observational methodology, with a quantitative and descriptive nature. Essentially, we used two observation systems. Firstly, sequentially, to analyse Training Time Management and secondly, multidimensionally, to study Behaviours related to the Main Teaching Functions, using PROF./ULg.
The results obtained through the application of descriptive and inferential statistics revealed that there were no significant differences in any of the behaviours observed and analysed, which leads us to conclude that the coaches' behaviours are similar regardless of the context. This research also allowed us to typify the coaches, which means that the values observed, in comparison with the data from the main bibliography on behaviour analysis for each of the behavioural categories of the different systems used, are very acceptable in terms of their behaviour during training sessions, in Adapted Judo or in Regular Jud
Soil stabilization with sisal fibres
Autor Correspondente : Rosa Luzia ([email protected])Soil stabilization using natural fibres is a solution that can have environmental and technical advantages. Among the natural fibres that have adequate characteristics are sisal fibres. In this work, were used sisal fibres to evaluate its potential to improve the characteristics of soils for embankment and road pavement layers construction. Was characterized a clayey sand soil, in its natural state and after mixing it with sisal fibres. The mixture with 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% of sisal fibres with 15mm length was characterized and the bearing capacity of the soil was determined using CBR tests (California Bearing Ratio). The results from the tests show that sisal fibre stabilization leads to a decrease, although slight, in the CBR values, for 2.5mm and 5.0mm of penetration. However, when observing the penetration/force curves, the natural soil performed better between 0.0mm and 6.0mm of penetration, suffering a break after 6.0mm, while mixtures with 1.0% and 1.5% of fibres maintained a practically linear progress up to 12mm of penetration.
