The paper explores the research line on One Health, an innovative concept that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2016), refers to "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being." This definition fits within a paradigm that goes beyond the mere absence of disease, embracing the complexity of environmental, physical, and psychological aspects. The WHO has indeed established a significant link between the environment and human health by introducing the concept of "Eco-Health" (WHO, Regional Office for Europe, 2016). In this context, the research project "Smart&Safe2. Design for Inclusive Smart Protection Systems (S2PI)" is situated. This project won a competitive funding call from the Campania Region (2022- 2023) in response to the emergency related to the Covid-19 pandemic. One Health provides the reference framework for the project, which aims to analyze and address the issues arising from the prolonged use of personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly face masks, focusing on the dermatological effects associated with them. The primary goal is to promote prevention, protection, and care strategies at the social level, aiming to address the emerging problems during the pandemic period.O artigo explora a linha de pesquisa sobre One Health, um conceito inovador que, de acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS, 2016), se refere a "um estado de bem-estar físico, mental e social completo".

Agradecimentos: SPRINT - Sport Physical Activity and Health Research & Innovation Center, Portugal Research Center in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development (CIDESD), Portugal Department of Sports and Well-being, School of Education, Castelo Branco, Portugal Department of Sport Sciences, Sport Sciences School of Rio Maior, Rio Maior, PortugalIntroducción: El judo es un deporte de combate olímpico dividido en categorías de peso y sexo. Abstract: Introduction: Judo is an Olympic combat sport divided into weight and gender categories. Bouts last four minutes for both genders, and when the scores or warnings for both competitors are the same, the match is decided by the Golden Technique. Therefore, the duration of bouts and competitions can have repercussions for judokas, both from a technical-tactical, physical, psychological, and/or physiological perspective. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of technical actions, scores, and penalties based on bout duration and competition phase at the 2021 European Senior Judo Championships. Methodology: 398 bouts were observed across all weight categories and both genders (230 men and 168 women). The Kodokan judo classification was used to record the techniques. Scores and penalties were recorded throughout the bout, as in the Golden Technique, at the different stages of the competition. Results: The majority of bouts ended within regulation time (79.15%), and a smaller percentage were resolved in the Golden Technique (20.85%). As the competition phase progresses, there is a tendency for bouts to be decided by the Golden Technique. Detection of Bagaza virus in Europe: A scoping review

    No full text
The Bagaza virus (BAGV) belongs to the genus Orthoflavivirus (Ntaya serocomplex) and emerged in Europe, Spain, in 2010. The natural transmission cycle of this virus is perpetuated by Culex spp. mosquitoes and viraemic birds. The ability of BAGV to cause infection in several game birds from the family Phasianidae has been well-studied. BAGV is antigenically similar to other orthoflaviviruses from the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex, such as the West Nile and Usutu viruses, a circumstance which can lead to cross-reactivity in less specific serological techniques (e.g., ELISA). Severe implications in animal health has already been described, but some aspects of the dynamics of transmission and the limits of zoonotic potential of BAGV still need to be clarified. Further investigation focused on epidemiological surveillance in high-risk areas would be beneficial for prevention and control of new outbreaks. The present study is a systematic review of the BAGV reports in Europe. This work was supported by projects UIDB/00772/2020 (Doi: 10.54499/UIDB/00772/2020) and LA/P/0059/2020, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)

Tracking the source of microplastics in soil : An exploratory case study in peach orchards from east‑central Portugal

    No full text
This work was funded and supported by the Portuguese 2020.06010.BD PhD grant from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (individual fellowship attributed to Abel Veloso). In the last 20 years, world plastic production has increased rapidly, reaching 4.00 × 1011 kg in 2022. However, less than 10% was recycled. Moreover, most conventional plastics are persistent and, therefore, remain in the environment long after their release. Although most studies on microplastic contamination focus on a single environmental compartment, an integrated and multicompartment approach is highly recommended considering the multitude of interactions between those compartments. This study addresses this knowledge gap, investigating the presence and potential sources of microplastics (MP) in agricultural soils under typical conditions of the Mediterranean region, characterised by dry summers and relatively moist and mild winters (Csa according to the Köppen-Geiger classification). For this, 19 orchards from east-central Portugal were used as case study sites, and a total of 111 samples were analysed. Soil content in MP was assessed in 3 soil layers (0–5, 5–15 and 15–25 cm). To quantify potential sources to soil, information from farmers was used, and samples from irrigation water, atmospheric deposition and manure were analysed. Optical assessment with the assistance of a stereomicroscope was used for MP quantification. The 0–5 cm soil layer showed a lower content (average of 2.2 particles·g−1) and higher particle sizes (average of 168 μm) than deeper soil layers. The identified sources contributed with 1.02 × 105 particles·m−2·year−1. Irrigation water was the main source, representing 55.9% of the aforemen-tioned input rate encountered for the 3 identified MP sources. Additional knowledge is needed regarding the possible variation in MP content throughout the year and between years and the polymer identification, not only in samples collected from soil but also from its main contamination sources. Furthermore, this study should be extended to other crops and regions as part of broader soil health monitoring

Abstract: The musical heritage preserved by Portuguese Memory Institutions represents a tangible testament to the richness and diversity of musical creation and practices throughout the nation’s cultural history. The preservation and scholarly study of this legacy are crucial for the construction of a robust cultural identity. Nevertheless, a considerable portion of this heritage remains insufficiently studied and inadequately disseminated by the custodial institutions. Additionally, the documentation is frequently neither properly processed nor cataloged, and even when it is, it is seldom made available through online catalogs. The absence of a centralized access framework further complicates the consultation and exploration of this heritage, rendering it inaccessible even to specialized audiences, such as performers and musicologists. Identifying, describing, and providing access to this heritage are fundamental steps toward advancing knowledge of surviving historical musical sources. This project aims to develop an information system that enables the management and discovery of Portugal’s written musical heritage. In this way, the aim is to centralize and organize the associated information, simplifying access processes to this content and identifying where it is stored through the registration of each institution. Throughout this document, the project objectives are described, as well as which requirements are considered and the different development stages. In this way, the initial analysis carried out within the scope of the project will be presented, the requirements provided, the modeling and implementation phase will be presented. The application modeling will be described, indicating all the steps of the ICONIX methodology. At this stage, all use cases of the application are identified, and the functionalities are represented through robustness diagrams and sequence diagrams. Still associated with modeling, the class diagram and the entity and relationship model through which the database table structure for this project was obtained will be presented. After completing the modeling phase, we moved on to the project implementation phase. During this phase, the architecture defined for the application to be developed is described, as well as the tools used, but the result of the application developed and how it was tested during the development process are also presented

Assim, a presente investigação apresenta contributos significativos para a compreensão do impacto deste tipo de abordagem no ensino da leitura, explorando o seu potencial enquanto estratégia pedagógico-didática para o desenvolvimento da competência leitora no 1.º CEB.Abstract: This internship report was prepared as part of the Supervised Teaching Practice (PES), in accordance with the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Preschool Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. The document provides a description of the PES in Preschool Education and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, as well as the presentation of the research developed within the study entitled The Didactic Use of Pseudoword Lists: Impact on the Development of Reading Competence. This study was implemented with 2nd-year students and aimed primarily to assess reading speed in a school context, analyzing its progression after performing exercises based on reading pseudoword lists. Phonological awareness is not only a fundamental prerequisite for speech perception but also an essential element in learning the grapheme-phoneme correspondence, a central process for acquiring reading and writing skills. It involves explicit knowledge of the sounds of the native language, enabling students to identify, manipulate, and reflect on the phonetic segments of speech. Based on this premise, it was expected that the didactic use of pseudowords could generate significant benefits in the development of students' linguistic and cognitive skills, particularly in strengthening reading fluency and enriching lexical knowledge. The systematic work with pseudowords carried out in the context of PES in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, specifically in the 2nd year, appears to play a relevant role in improving word decoding ability, as it enhances the practice of essential phonological skills for converting graphic sequences into sound units and vice versa. Thus, this research presents significant contributions to understanding the impact of this approach on reading instruction, exploring its potential as a pedagogical-didactic strategy for developing reading competence in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education

Molecular and serological screening support the lack of Coxiella burnetii circulation in wild birds of Portugal

    No full text
Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogenic bacterium that has a major economic impact in the livestock industry throughout the world and causes unpredictable outbreaks in humans worldwide. Although it is known that birds are potential reservoirs of C. burnetii, their role in the epidemiological cycle of the pathogen has not been fully verified. Due to its non-specific symptoms and clinical signs, it is certainly an underdiagnosed disease. The objective of this study was to obtain more information on C. burnetii prevalence in wild birds in Portugal. Blood, plasma, and other tissue samples were obtained from wild birds admitted at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Portugal in the scope of passive surveillance. Antibodies specific to C. burnetii were screened using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Evidence of C. burnetii infection was sought based on the detection of bacterial DNA. No positive results were found, either in terms of antibodies to C. burnetii or molecular biology. These serological findings do not indicate the endemic circulation of C. burnetii in wild birds, which can be considered relevant information. However, a more complete and serialized approach over time is necessary to be able to make real inferences about the endemicity of the pathogen in the country and its dispersion among wild avian populations. qPCR results were also negative, a finding suggesting that this host population may not play a significant role in the transmission dynamics of C. burnetii. Given the importance of wild bird species as natural reservoirs of this zoonotic bacterium, we consider these data useful for multidisciplinary work in the prevention and control of Q fever, following a One Health approach. The authors would like to thank the teams at CRAS-HVUTAD, CRASSA, and PBG for their cooperation in collecting the samples. A huge thank you to the Laboratory of Microbiology of the School of Agriculture, Polytechnic University of Castelo Branco, and to the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Laboratory of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), University of Porto

As consumers become more health-conscious, they are increasingly seeking out foods that offer potential health benefits, such as yoghurts. To encourage more sustainable and healthy consumption habits, it is important to develop food products using local food ingredients. This study focused on fermented dairy products, namely by developing various formulations of Greek yoghurt using strawberry-tree fruit (Arbutus unedo L.) (STF) and peach (Prunus persica) puree, with no added sugar. Both peach and STF were sourced locally. A sensory analysis was performed to determine the preferred formulation, selecting either z1 (20% STF and 80% peach) or z2 (30% STF and 70% peach). After comparing the two, z1 emerged as the preferred formulation. For this formulation, physicochemical and microbiological analyses were conducted. A Greek yoghurt that incorporates peach and STF was developed while satisfying the requirements for “low-fat”, “low-saturated fat”, and “no added sugars” nutrition claims. These are all important features that align with the guidelines provided by the World Health Organization in promoting a healthy diet that encourages reduced fat and saturated fat intake, limited consumption of added sugars, and increased fibre content. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time describing a Greek yoghurt containing STF purée. This work was developed within the project FUSILLI (Fostering the Urban Food System transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation). A systematic review on the IEEE 1451 standards: Current status, challenges, and opportunities

    No full text
Given the growth of different manufacturers with diverse hardware/software designs, the growth of transducers functionalities, and rising concerns toward heterogeneity, data security, and trustworthiness, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society’s Technical Committee 9 on Sensor Technology (IM/ST-TC9-Sensor Technology) supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) formalized the IEEE 1451 family of standards. The standards were developed with the purpose of defining common interfaces for communication within transducers and different systems with plug-and-play (PnP) features, reducing configuration and deployment time. However, in the context of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), the standard fails to address emerging technologies toward Internet of Things (IoT) applications, artificial intelligence (AI), and remaining concerns related to cybersecurity, making it difficult to achieve widespread adoption in the industry sector. This article explores a systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 (PRISMA 2020) as a formal systematic literature review guideline to collect and analyze existing knowledge within the scope of the IEEE 1451 standard, examine potential improvements to the standard, and explore future directions to address the constraints identified and open new research opportunities. A total of 53 studies are analyzed, considering publications within the 2019 and 2025 time frame, with data being collected from the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and IEEE Xplore scientific database. Findings reveal a strong focus on smart transducers applications in the most diverse domains with interoperability concerns, such as integration with different standards, smart cities applications, environmental monitoring, as well as research on disseminating the adoption of the standards considering both the academic community and industry field while alsosuggesting adaptations/modifications of particular parameters to address evolving applications. Furthermore, a portion of the findings is centered on cybersecurity vulnerabilities and proposes solutions to enhance the robustness and resilience of systems employing the given standards
