Background: This study aimed to examine the association between frailty and depres sive symptoms. Methods: Cross-sectional and five-year longitudinal study. Data were from the population-based Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) waves six (2015) and eight (2020). Frailty was assessed using the SHARE-Frailty Instrument. Fatigue, appetite, walking difficulties, and physical activity were self-reported, and grip strength was measured using a hand grip dynamometer. The EURO-D 12-item scale was used to measure depressive symptoms. Results: The sample comprised 25,771 older adults (56.2% female) with a mean age of 66.5 (95% CI 66.4, 66.6) years. The prevalence of frailty was 4.2% (95% CI 3.9, 4.4) in 2015 and 6.7% (95% CI 13.5, 14.3) in 2020. Among frail participants, 72.5% and 69.6% had depression in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Frailty was associated with depression over the 5 years. Those with pre-frailty and those with frailty in 2015 had 1.86 (95% CI 1.71, 2.01) and 2.46 (95% CI 2.14, 2.83) greater odds of having depressive symptoms in 2020. Conclusions: Frailty is a predictor of depression in older adults, and frail participants had greater odds of presenting depressive symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Distribution of Genetic Diversity in Beta patula Aiton Populations from Madeira Archipelago, Portugal

    Get PDF
Beta patula Aiton is a crop wild relative (CWR) which belongs to the Gene Pool 1b and is considered a Critically Endangered species, and is present in very specific environments, such as the Desembarcadouro islet (DI) in Ponta de São Lourenço or Chão islet (CI) in the Desertas Islands. The ISOPlexis Center (University of Madeira) has been providing continuous support for its in situ conservation by keeping a management plan of wild populations and an ex situ conservation strategy through the storage of accessions in the ISOPlexis GeneBank. The present work intends to present the spatial distribution of genetic variability and diversity in these B. patula populations using eight polymorphic Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers. The overall results lead to the identification of three spots with a high genetic diversity. CI with a small cluster of individuals shows a genetic footprint different from DI, having unique alleles present in its population. DI has two distinct areas: the western area, with a higher individual density but with a lower genetic diversity and higher allele fixation; and the central area, with a lower individual count but with a higher genetic diversity and with the presence of unique alleles. Despite some genetic differences, the comparison of the two islets’ DI and CI populations shows that they have more similarities than differences. Analysis of the Molecular Variance, based on the hierarchical cluster, showed a 9% diversity between populations, 68% among individuals, and 23% within individuals. This data will be used for the establishment of a protocol to monitor and manage B. patula genetic diversity under a genetic reserve, subsequently contributing to the European Genetic Reserve network implementation and the protection of this important CWR.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Role of Ports in Tourism: Porto Santo Harbour

    Get PDF
The island of Porto Santo belongs to the Madeira Archipelago and is often described as an idyllic paradise for its warm waters and its iconic sandy beach, though it faces vulnerabilities such as insularity; a small economy; geographic remoteness; and scarce population, area, and available resources. Nevertheless, these disadvantages have a silver lining because small territories can act as laboratories to test and develop models that can subsequently be implemented at a larger scale. This work provides a case study of the role of ports in tourism development It presents an analysis of air and maritime transport used by tourists to visit the Island of Porto Santo, Madeira Islands, Portugal. The climate changes and strong winds during the year can reduce tourist demand for the inter-island sea travel in the Madeira Archipelago. Porto Santo is a strategic transfer point for tourism, and improving the shipping infrastructures will enable a faster and more diversified maritime trans portation system. To capitalise on these developments, Porto Santo needs to improve its reputation as an exclusive beach destination. This will reduce tourism seasonality and improve sustainability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Assessment of Staling Aldehydes in Lager Beer under Maritime Transport and Storage Conditions

    Get PDF
: Beer flavor stability is greatly influenced by external temperature, vibrations, and longer delivery times. The present study assessed the impact of transport and storage conditions on staling aldehyde evolution in lager beers across five sample groups (fresh, transport, and storage simulation, and their controls), which differed in their bottle opening system (either crown cap or ring pull cap). Maritime transport conditions (45 days of travel, vibrations of 1.7 Hz, and warm temperatures (21–30 ◦C)) were simulated, together with storage time in a distributor’s warehouse (up to 75 days). The results revealed that the concentration of Strecker aldehydes increased more quickly after transport and storage simulation in beer bottles with the ring pull cap opening system, and the contents of 2-methylpropanal and 3-methylbutanal, in particular, were up to three times higher. Benzaldehyde content also increased significantly, by 33% on average, in these samples. Hexanal was only found in beers with a ring pull cap that underwent transport simulation. Further storage after transport simulation significantly reduced the content of 2-methylpropanal, 3-methylbutanal, and hexanal, by 73%, 57%, and 43%, respectively, suggesting the formation of a bound state. 5- hydroxymethylfurfural was continuously increased by 78.5% and 40.5% after the Transport and Transport & Storage simulations, respectively. Transport conditions lead to a slight increase, of 0.6 EBC units, in beer color.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
This investigation focuses, at first, on the study of the condition of women in the Muslim religion, based on the norms expressed in the Koran. The Islamic religion, which is the most recent of the three Abrahamic religions, created about 600 years after Christ, has the meaning of “submission to the will of God”, based on its belief in God (Allah) and in the prophet who propagated his message to the population, Mohammed (Mohammad), the chosen one. Some of the translations of the holy book make it clear that men have responsibilities towards women and that women have to submit to the will of men, whether they are husbands, fathers or brothers. The woman is represented in the oikos sphere, having the function of taking care of the house and educating the children and, above all, giving heirs, men, to her husband. In a second moment, this dissertation focuses its attention on true stories of two women who suffered at the hands of men, reported in, a Desfigurada, by Rania Al-Baz, and Queimada Viva, by Souad, to analyze the condition of the Muslim woman through the path of the protagonists who defied the norms of the Koran

Palmares como território de transição na redemocratização

    Get PDF
The article proposes the analysis of the film Quilombo (1984), by director Carlos Diegues, perceiving the construction of the territory of Palmares in the work as reflections of a Brazilian identity at the time of imminent redemocratization. The images in the film, which represent the quilombo, are, in this way, the imagination of a possible democratic nation, with Afro-Brazilian culture being the nodal point between various social demands barred by the Military Dictatorship of 64. A process that years later breaks with neoliberalism, but that at the time of production is remarkable. Therefore, Benedict Anderson's perspective when thinking of the nation as an imagined community and Milton Santos understanding the territory as the sum of diverse forces, are activated in a dialogue with the film. A post-colonial perspective where fixed territoriality emerges as control and exclusion of the other. Theoretical contribution that understands the quilombola territory in the film as a break with several colonial and exclusionary processes in Brazil. An interdisciplinary methodological approach, understanding the film as a historical document that allows us to perceive the inherent characteristics of the time in which it is produced; as well as an aesthetic discourse, proposing an investigative direction of the work through the basic properties of the film material and its practical implications.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this pilot study, we sought to evaluate the short-term impact of a novel CT system with greater ecological validity – the NeuroAIreh@b platform – in a sample of chronic stroke survivors. We recruited ten stroke survivors who underwent a baseline neuropsychological assessment (NPA). Then, participants were enrolled in a tablet-based CT intervention with the prototype version of the NeuroAIreh@b platform, comprising eight 45- minutes training sessions. In these sessions, participants performed four types of CT tasks inspired by activities of daily living (ADLs) (e.g., selecting the correct ingredients for a given recipe, paying for groceries in the supermarket). Post-NPAs were conducted to evaluate the interventions’ short-term impact. A within-group analysis using the Wilcoxon test revealed statistically significant improvements in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and in the Adults and Older Adults Functional Assessment Inventory (IAFAI) total score. Overall, CT with the NeuroAIreh@b platform appears to be beneficial in the chronic phase of stroke, leading to gains in general cognition (MoCA) and functional abilities (IAFAI). These preliminary findings with the prototype version of the NeuroAIreh@b platform are encouraging and suggest the generalization of training gains to ADLs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Impact of Full-Body Interaction on Computerized Cognitive Training Based on Instrumental Activities of Daily Living: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial with Chronic Psychiatric Inpatients

    Get PDF
Objective: To conduct a pilot randomized control trial to assess the feasibility and acceptability of full-body interaction cognitive training (FBI-CT) inspired by instrumental activities of daily living in chronic psychiatric inpatients and to explore its preliminary impact on cognitive and noncognitive outcomes. Materials and Methods: Twenty psychiatric inpatients met the inclusion criteria and were randomly allocated to the FBI-CT group (n = 10) or the tablet-based CT group (T-CT) (n = 10). Neuropsychological assessments were performed at baseline, postintervention, and 3-month follow-up. Results: Both groups presented high completion rates at postintervention and follow-up. Participants reported high satisfaction following the interventions, with the FBI-CT group exhibiting slightly higher satisfaction. A within-group analysis showed significant improvements in the FBI-CT group for processing speed and sustained attention for short periods (P = 0.012), verbal memory (P = 0.008), semantic fluency (P = 0.027), depressive symptoms (P = 0.008), and quality of life (P = 0.008) at postintervention. At 3-month follow-up, this group maintained verbal memory improvements (P = 0.047) and depressive symptoms amelioration (P = 0.026). The T-CT group revealed significant improvements in sustained attention for long periods (P = 0.020), verbal memory (P = 0.014), and executive functions (P = 0.047) postintervention. A between-group analysis demon strated that the FBI-CT group exhibited greater improvements in depressive symptoms (P = 0.042). Conclusions: Overall, we found support for the feasibility and acceptability of both training approaches. Our findings show promise regarding the preliminary impact of the FBI-CT intervention, but due to study limitations such as the small sample size, we cannot conclude that FBI-CT is a more effective approach than T-CT for enhancing cognitive and noncognitive outcomes of chronic psychiatric inpatients. Dialogues as a genre have been the subject of very few studies in Portuguese literature such as the writer, José Daniel Rodrigues da Costa, an author known for his writing and bravery in the criticism made of society during the XVIII century and the beginning of the XIX century, Exposing naked reality and raw with the greatest possible transparency, it became very popular within the Portuguese community, thus making all social strata its assiduous subscribers to read its leaflets.
