The theme we propose to address are the visits of presidents of the Portuguese Republic to the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo between 1955 and 1973. To this end, we use as a source the institutional photo albums produced by the Civil Government of the Autonomous District of Funchal, now part of the museum collection of the Museological Area of the Office of the Representative of the Portuguese Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Given the particularities of our source, we adopted in the first place methodologies of historical narration and, subsequently, a quantitative analysis of the content of the photo albums. The present dissertation intends to divulge the theme of the photo albums as historical sources and try to situate this practice in the propagandistic imagery of the "Estado Novo" (political regime from 1933 to 1974)

    Get PDF
The purposes of this study were twofold: (1) to describe a new technological solution for the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries based on virtual reality (VR) gaming, and (2) to analyze the variation in rated perceived exertion (RPE) and heart rate (HR) of the participants when undergoing a rehabilitation session based on different VR games. Thirty-seven participants aged 23.7 ± 7.0 years tested during five customized VR games to provide a complete rehabilitation session after a musculoskeletal injury. The results of the Friedman test indicated a statistically significant difference in RPE scale and HR across the five VR games throughout a complete rehabilitation session (χ2 (4, n = 35) = 75.59; p < 0.001 and χ2 (4, n = 35) = 27.75, p < 0.001, respectively). RPE and HR increased significantly from Game 1 to Game 2 (z = –5.16, p < 0.001), from Game 1 to Game 3 (z = – 5.05, p < 0.001), from Game 1 to Game 4 (z = –4.87, p < 0.001), and from Game 1 to Game 5 (z = –3.61, p < 0.001). Moreover, the results showed a high perceived usability of the system, greater intrinsic motivation to perform the rehabilitation exercises, a high level of immersion, and a good experience in the VR gaming environment. Our study stimulates extended intervention programs following up on this immersive virtual reality rehabilitation system to support soccer players recovering from musculoskeletal injuries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Translation, cultural adaptation, and psychometric validation of the european portuguese version of the Iceland-expressive family functioning questionnaire (ICE-EFFQ)

A family’s experience of mental illness can change the family’s functioning. In clinical contexts, valid and reliable instruments that assess family functioning, therapeutic changes, and the effects of family nursing interventions are needed. This study focuses on the linguistic and cultural adaptation of the Iceland-Expressive Family Functioning Questionnaire (ICE-EFFQ) to European Portuguese and examines the psychometric properties of this instrument. A non-random sample of 121 Portuguese depressed patients and their relatives completed the questionnaire. Principal components analysis extracted 4 factors, explaining 55.58% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed acceptable adjustment quality indices. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was adequate for the global scale α=.86 and for the 4 subscales: communication α=.79, expression of emotions α=.68, problem-solving α=.71, and cooperation α=.61. The Portuguese version of ICE-EFFQ is a sensitive, valid, and reliable instrument for use with Portuguese families with adult members with depression and can be valuable in assessing these families’ expressive functioning, before and after intervention

Differences in the volatilomic urinary biosignature of prostate cancer patients as a feasibility study for the detection of potential biomarkers

    Get PDF
Prostate cancer (PCa) continues to be the second most common malignant tumour and the main cause of oncological death in men. Investigating endogenous volatile organic metabolites (VOMs) produced by various metabolic pathways is emerging as a novel, effective, and non-invasive source of information to establish the volatilomic biosignature of PCa. In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) was used to establish the urine volatilomic profile of PCa and identify VOMs that can discriminate between the two investigated groups. This non-invasive approach was applied to oncological patients (PCa group, n = 26) and cancer-free individuals (control group, n = 30), retrieving a total of 147 VOMs from various chemical families. This included terpenes, norisoprenoid, sesquiterpenes, phenolic, sulphur and furanic compounds, ketones, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, carboxylic acid, benzene and naphthalene derivatives, hydrocarbons, and heterocyclic hydrocarbons. The data matrix was subjected to multivariate analysis, namely partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Accordingly, this analysis showed that the group under study presented different volatomic profiles and suggested potential PCa biomarkers. Nevertheless, a larger cohort of samples is required to boost the predictability and accuracy of the statistical models developed.</jats:p

Enhanced alpha-amylase inhibition activity of amine-terminated PAMAM dendrimer stabilized pure copper-doped magnesium oxide nanoparticles

    Get PDF
The present work aims to prepare copper-doped MgO nanoparticles via a sol-gel approach and study their antidiabetic alpha-amylase inhibition activity with undoped MgO nanoparticles. The ability of G5 amine terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer for the controlled release of copper-doped MgO nano particles to exhibit alpha-amylase inhibition activity was also evaluated. The synthesis of MgO nanoparticles via sol-gel approach and optimization of calcination temperature and time has led to the formation of nanoparticles with different shapes (spherical, hexagonal, and rod-shaped) and a polydispersity in size ranging from 10 to 100 nm with periclase crystalline phase. The presence of copper ions in the MgO nanoparticles has altered their crystallite size, eventually modifying their size, morphology, and surface charge. The efficiency of dendrimer to stabilize spherical copper-doped MgO nanoparticles (ca. 30 %) is higher than in other samples, which was confirmed by UV–Visible, DLS, FTIR, and TEM analysis. The amylase inhibition assay emphasized that the dendrimer nanoparticles stabilization has led to the prolonged enzyme inhibition ability of MgO and copper doped MgO nanoparticles for up to 24 h

This report is the result of a long training process and the experiences carried out in Preschool and Primary School Education, in the scope of the Supervised Educational Practice I, II and III subjects. The internship prepares the future professional for teaching, whether in preschool or primary school. This work consists of pedagogical and theoretical practice, in which two Action Research projects were developed. In Pedagogical Practice I, a study was developed based on a five-year-old child diagnosed with a sensory disturbance who had different type of relationship problems within the group and with the adults. The question asked was: How can the “Sala Verde” group contribute to the social integration of children with special educational needs in communication? By implementing some strategies, little by little, we became aware of the child's interaction with others and also with education professionals. In Primary Education, the Project was carried out in Practice III and, the formulated question was suggested by the cooperating teacher. The chosen theme was relevant since the students were in their first year, thereby initiating the schooling process. From that moment on, after several discussions with the cooperating teacher, I took some notes and elaborated my question, which consisted of the following: How do 1st year students learn to read, draw letters and develop phonological awareness? Taking this issue into account, when planning the activities I tried to implement some strategies and, over time, the students evolved significantly in the subject under study, as each day they exercised writing and reading and, consequently, acquired phonological awareness

Sports participation is one of the most popular forms of physical activity among youngsters. This study aimed to examine the changes in the estimated body composition, strength, and flexibility of adolescent boys after 12 months of soccer training compared with those of age-matched controls with non-sports participation. We assessed 137 boys (62 soccer players and 75 controls) at baseline (TM1) and 12 months later (TM2). The differences in estimated body composition, strength, and flexibility were investigated using a repeated measure analysis of variance. The analysis revealed a significant main effect of soccer training on fat mass (F = 73.503, p ≤ 0.01, η2 = 0.59) and fat-free mass (F = 39.123, p ≤ 0.01, η2 = 0.48). Over time, the soccer group decreased their fat mass and increased their fat-free mass, while the opposite results were observed for the controls. Among physical fitness tests, a substantial effect of soccer training was evidenced for the sit-up performance (F = 16.224, p ≤ 0.01, η2 = 0.32). Regarding the time factor, significant effects were noted for height and handgrip strength. No significant differences were detected for flexibility. Overall, the benefits of soccer training were exhibited by the larger improvements in fat mass, fat-free mass, sit-ups, and handgrip strength performance, underlining the important role of soccer participation during adolescence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
This present PhD thesis on Atlantic Islands: History, Heritage and Institutional Legal Frame analyses the "Revolution of the Carnations" in Madeira, specifically the social and political tensions, which occurred between “25 April 1974” and “25 November 1975", interpreted as the most intense period of the implementation of democracy in Portugal, after the "New State" overthrow. The “25 April” in Madeira, its causes, movements and consequences, crossing different areas of the island reality are considered, with special attention to the time leading up to the revolution, life in the first days of freedom and the changes in primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. Furthermore, the role of associations, movements and political parties, and the changes occurred in political-administrative institutions, as well as the simultaneous and competing forces for both autonomy and separatism, are also analysed. The study also addresses the role of the Madeiran Catholic Church and the media, along with the political awareness and understanding of the local population and the impact of the “25 April” on Madeira and Porto Santo. The main historical source for this study was the local press due to the scientific value of its coverage as it spanned the effective period of the revolution. Therefore, we may conclude that the” Carnation Revolution” was definitely decisive in the socio-economic and political-cultural transformation in Madeira

This report was projected with the aim for integral acquisition of a master’s degree in Pre-School Education and teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education through a context of supervised teaching practice and education fundamentals merging on a reflective process for sustained teaching skills and knowledge. For this purpose, the document is connected by two major parts (Theorical and Methodologic Framework and Pedagogical Intervention). On the first it is settled the foundation which has all the conceptual framework based on the latest groundwork practices and science itself with a methodological program aiming for an investigation project during precepted practices. In the second part experiences were described and reflected. All the intervention strategies with pedagogical intention were privileged according to the current Portugal’s education Programs, ensembled competences and newly implemented strategies due to COVID-19 pandemic. The practices took place in two elementary schools, Infantário Auxílio Maternal do Funchal and, in a mixed practice (Distance learning and traditional education) at Escola Básica do 1.º Ciclo com Pré Escolar das Figueirinhas. More than a description or exposition, this document constitutes a sharing of experiences in a preliminary training for teaching, in which, despite the particularities and unpredictability that guide the different contexts of pedagogical practice, the adaptability and creativity were usually present. The true meaning of the teaching career was never forgotten as well as a passionate encouragement at the children when learning and getting knowledge
