Hydraulic Planning in Insular Urban Territories: The Case of Madeira Island—Ribeira Brava, Tabua
This study’s primary goal was to conduct an analysis of the flood propensity of the Tabua
(Ribeira Brava) drainage basin’s main watercourse. In addition to that, this study also recommends
two different methodologies in order to mitigate flood impacts, namely by dimensioning a detention
basin and adjusting the riverbed roughness coefficient. Regarding the study on the flood propensity,
it was necessary to resort to geomorphological data, which were obtained when characterizing
the watershed; these data were crucial to determining the expected peak flow rate, according to
the Gumbel distribution methodology and considering a 100-year return period, and to perform
necessary tasks in the SIG ArcGIS 10.5 software. Lastly, the drainage capacity of this drainage basin’s
river mouth was also analyzed in order to conclude whether it would have the capacity to drain the
total volume of rainwater if an extreme flood event were to happen. Indeed, the main results show
that this watershed’s river mouth does not have the necessary drainage capacity to cope with an
extreme event for the return period that was considered. As a consequence, the two aforementioned
mitigation measures were developed considering the Tabua (Ribeira Brava) drainage basin’s specific
features. The size of the detention basin was estimated through the Dutch method and the simplified
triangular hydrograph method, while the adjustment of the roughness coefficient was considered a
valid solution to enhance the drainage capacity of this river mouth.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
As
The internship report was built with the intention of obtaining the master's degree in Pre-School
Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, in which it intends to highlight,
experience and reflect on all the practices carried out throughout this master's degree in the
academic years 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.
In this report is the analysis and reflection of Pedagogical Practices supported by the theoretical
foundation. This is structured in two distinct parts: the Theoretical and Methodological
Framework and the Framework of Pedagogical Practice. The pedagogical interventions were
carried out in the scope of the Pre-School and 1st Cycle of Basic Education (one intervention
in the 2nd year and the other in the 3rd year of schooling).
The educational practices consisted of theoretical knowledge, which was deepened and related
to the practical context. The main focus was to contribute to development, taking into account
the interests and needs of children and students.
As the main methodology I used the Research-Action Methodology, in order to answer the
questions: "How to promote the rules of coexistence with the children of the Rainbow room?"
in Pedagogical Practice I; "How to enhance learning in students through artistic expressions?"
in Pedagogical Practice II. It should be noted that in the last practice I continued with the same
class and did not perform any question for action-investigation.
Finally, artistic expressions, experimental teaching and other curricular areas have a
fundamental role in education, as they contribute to the development of students. These areas
when they are worked in an interconnected way arouse in the students the curiosity, the ability
to express themselves, the critical spirit among others. Thus, students are "prepared" to be
active participants in society
Non-Destructive Banana Ripeness Detection Using Shallow and Deep Learning: A Systematic Review
The ripeness of bananas is the most significant factor affecting nutrient composition and
demand. Conventionally, cutting and ripeness analysis requires expert knowledge and substantial
human intervention, and different studies have been conducted to automate and substantially reduce
human effort. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematic Reviews approach, 1548 studies
were extracted from journals and conferences, using different research databases, and 35 were
included in the final review for key parameters. These studies suggest the dominance of banana
fingers as input data, a sensor camera as the preferred capturing device, and appropriate features,
such as color, that can provide better detection. Among six stages of ripeness, the studies employing
the four mentioned stages performed better in terms of accuracy and coefficient of determination
value. Among all the works for detecting ripeness stages prediction, convolutional neural networks
were found to perform sufficiently well with large datasets, whereas conventional artificial neural
networks and support vector machines attained better performance for sensor-related data. However,
insufficient information on the dataset and capturing device, limited data availability, and exploitation
of data augmentation techniques are limitations in existing studies. Thus, effectively addressing these
shortcomings and close collaboration with experts to predict the ripeness stages should be pursued.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Graphical User Interface for the Development of Probabilistic Convolutional Neural Networks
Through the development of artificial intelligence, some capabilities of human beings
have been replicated in computers. Among the developed models, convolutional neural networks
stand out considerably because they make it possible for systems to have the inherent capabilities
of humans, such as pattern recognition in images and signals. However, conventional methods are
based on deterministic models, which cannot express the epistemic uncertainty of their predictions.
The alternative consists of probabilistic models, although these are considerably more difficult to
develop. To address the problems related to the development of probabilistic networks and the
choice of network architecture, this article proposes the development of an application that allows the
user to choose the desired architecture with the trained model for the given data. This application,
named “Graphical User Interface for Probabilistic Neural Networks”, allows the user to develop
or to use a standard convolutional neural network for the provided data, with networks already
adapted to implement a probabilistic model. Contrary to the existing models for generic use, which
are deterministic and already pre-trained on databases to be used in transfer learning, the approach
followed in this work creates the network layer by layer, with training performed on the provided
data, originating a specific model for the data in question.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The present dissertation aims to present itineraries through the sugar cane heritage in
Madeira Island. It translates into a proposal for a cultural strategy that intersects with
literature and gastronomy.
It begins with the context of sugarcane in the region, presenting its life cycle and
production process as well as the derivatives obtained, such as sugarcane honey and
brandy, for example.
The sugar culture had an impact on the economy of the region, which left a vast heritage
on Madeira Island, evident in the mills, museums, etc., which are points to visit in the
presented itineraries. The role of the mills, as well as the producers, is fundamental for
keeping the history of white gold alive. We are aware of cultural and literary tourism in
the dissemination and promotion of this culture, alluding to the events and traditions that
stand out in the context of sugarcane.
Thus, the saccharine culture is presented in Madeiran identity through the role of Cultural
Management
Environmental Analysis of the Incorporation of Sugarcane Bagasse in Medium Density Particleboard Panels through Life Cycle Assessment
The growth of civil construction and agroindustry, resulting from population growth,
caused an increase in the demand for non-renewable resources and for the exploitation of natural
resources. Consequently, it caused a greater generation of waste, causing the current scenario to
require alternatives for the reuse of these materials. Particleboard panels, for example, used in
civil construction, can add value to waste or materials of low acceptance, such as thinning wood,
mechanical wood processing waste or agro-industrial waste. Thus, this study proposed to analyse
the life cycle of the sugarcane bagasse, considering the stages of extraction of materials and energy
resources until their final disposal. This study aimed to compare impacts generated by the production
of particleboards panels produced with wood from plantations (pine) and with the sugarcane bagasse.
As a result, a better environmental performance was obtained from the panel composed of sugarcane
bagasse, as it generated lower environmental impacts in all impact categories studied. The benefits
range from the reduction in waste disposed of in landfills, which increase its useful life, the lower
demand for reforestation, with steps that generate atmospheric emissions and degrade the soil.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
No geral, o projeto
Since the civil construction sector is one of the pillars of national economic development, it is
essential to have a better understanding of the main factors that surrounding it. The most
current data indicate that the civil construction scenario in Portugal converges with the vast
majority of European countries. While the rest of the countries show significant growth in the
field of rehabilitation, the Portuguese construction sector has shown a notable increment in the
share of rehabilitation in the national scenario.
Despite this, some important rehabilitation works are being carried out as a way to rescue the
basic characteristics of the building, however, without significantly affecting the heritage of
Portuguese architecture. This is the case of the Health Center, which underwent a
rehabilitation project in 2013 to ensure better functioning of the health unit, however,
preserving several characteristics that make that building unique.
The present study had the objective of analyzing the solutions adopted for the water supply
system and the wastewater and rainwater drainage system. With the aid of current legislation
and bibliographies, the main points considered for the design of the aforementioned systems
were verified. In general, the project carried out showed great assertiveness with regard to the
application of current regulations and non-regulatory methodologies that were consolidated in
the meantime.
Finally, the objective of this study was to carry out the analysis of the hydraulic concepts used,
proposing improvements when necessary. However, the main problems encountered refer to
the transparency of the data and parameters used, which were not sufficiently detailed in the
descriptive memorial of the respective rehabilitation project
Implementation of a P2P NFTs protocol (ERC-721) designed to mitigate ticketing industry hitches
Illegal secondary markets have been a long-lived hassle for the ticketing industry. Scalpers tend to
aggressively buy out as many available tickets as possible with the goal to sell them elsewhere for
an immense profit. Upon a sold-out, interested customers have no choice than to pay the exorbi tant amount asked. This event-chain introduces an unfair and unprotected market for the overall
customers. Proposals and implementations to diminish those effects have been emerging, but the
perfect solution is yet to come. We have developed a protocol underpinned by the Ethereum sys tem which makes use of NFTs with the goal of providing a transparent, open, decentralized and
honest ticketing system. This thesis strongly focused on research regarding security and optimiza tion techniques for smart-contract coding. Moreover, this dissertation thoroughly documented the
development, testing, and validation strategies used to deliver the protocol. We conclude that
although the protocol notably serves its purpose, there is one clear limitation, a central authorita tive marketplace. Nevertheless, we believe the work herein implemented can serve as guidance to
onboard new users to these technologies, or serve as inspiration for newborn blockchain ideas
Neste
do 2º. Ano A?”.
aprendizagem. This report reflects my experiences in pedagogical practices in the scope of the
master’s degree in Pre-school Education and Primary School. In this sense, I try to
highlight and reflect on the work I did during this course under the supervision of my
supervisors, in the Achada Primary School with Pre-School (in a pre-school room), in
the Primary School with Pre-School of Ladeira (in a 4th grade class), and in the Primary
School with Pre-School of Ladeira (in a 4th grade class). Ladeira Primary School and
Pre-School (in a 4th grade class) and Visconde Cacongo Primary School (in a 2nd grade
class).
Thus, I consider pertinent the existence of a theoretical and methodological part
and a reflective part about my pedagogical intervention. In this sense, this report
consists of three parts subdivided into chapters. The first part refers to the theoretical
framework and the second part refers to the methodological framework, both are the
fundamentals, the foundations of my practice. Thus, in these two parts, we find the
rationale for my actions, as well as the methodology used throughout my practice.
In the third part my pedagogical intervention is explored and reflected upon,
focusing on the guiding questions, "In what ways can the children in the Crystal Room
promote democratic coexistence?" and "How to develop reading and writing in the class
of 2nd. Year A?". Thus, the most explored themes in my practice were the democratic
coexistence and the importance of reading and writing, being established strategies that
were implemented in the activities, to mitigate the gaps found. Also, in this part I
present the results obtained and a reflection on what could have been done to improve
my practice.
The completion of this report allowed me to reflect and expose the strategies
adopted, which made it possible to develop and motivate the children for various
learning experiences. I also learned that our life is a patient, confident, loving and
permanent learning process
