Differential Patterns in Motivations for Practicing Sport and Their Effects on Physical Activity Engagement across the Lifespan

    Get PDF
This study aims to report what motivates individuals to be physically active, to determine whether motivating factors influence physical activity (PA) levels, and whether this differs across the lifespan. This is a cross-sectional study with 498 individuals: 117 adolescents, 306 adults, and 75 older adults. PA was assessed using Baecke’s questionnaire, and motivating factors for practicing sports were investigated using a scale with twelve questions. The factor analysis identified three motivating factors for sports practice: psychosocial, bodily, and well-being. The scale’s overall reliability and internal consistency indicated a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.885. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) adjusted for sex indicated the three factors as having a significant effect on PA (p < 0.050); however, only the well-being factor showed a significant interaction with age groups (p = 0.023, ηp 2 = 0.030). Subsequently, the effect of the well-being factor on PA scores in each age group was explored through regression analyses. Only older adults showed a significant association in the unadjusted [OR = 0.378, p = 0.001, R2 = 0.243] and the sex-adjusted analysis [OR = 0.377, p = 0.001, R2 = 0.288]. These results help us to better understand the underlying motivational reasons in different age groups for engaging in sports.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the associations between muscular strength tests and vertical jumping performance (countermovement jump [CMJ] and squat jump [SJ]) in adolescent male football players, while controlling for important predictors such as chronological age and body composition. Methods. The sample involved 161 male footballers (mean age: 15.8 ± 1.7 years) from the under-19, under-17, and under-15 age groups. Body fat percentage (BF%) was calculated with Slaughter equations. Muscular strength assessment included handgrip strength and push-up and sit-up tests. Vertical jumping was examined through CMJ and SJ. Pearson correlations and hierarchical regression analyses were run to analyse the data. Results. All muscular strength tests showed significant correlations with CMJ and SJ. Handgrip strength was the most substantial predictor for CMJ (r = 0.43, p < 0.01) and SJ (r = 0.44, p < 0.01). However, regression models identified sit-ups (CMJ: = 0.15, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.23; SJ: = 0.16, p < 0.01, R2 = 0.27) and push-ups (CMJ: = 0.13, p < 0.01; SJ: = 0.15, p < 0.01) as significant predictors after controlling for chronological age, body mass, and BF%. In contrast, BF% remained a significant predictor of jumping performance (CMJ: = –0.43, p < 0.01, R2 = –0.39; SJ: = –0.52, p < 0.01, R2 = –0.52) in the whole hierarchical regression model. Conclusions. This study reinforces the importance of players’ overall physical development, including healthy diet habits, to enhance jumping performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Purpose Specific decisions made by neurointerventionists are often lost behind the data of large-scale trials, and many of these studies have taken place before the development of new techniques and devices. This study compares the stent-retriever assisted vacuum-locked extraction (SAVE) technique with a direct aspiration first pass (ADAPT), as well as the use of a balloon guide catheter (BGC), in intracranial internal carotid artery (IC-ICA) occlusions. Methods Observational and retrospective study from an Italian hospital, including patients who underwent thrombectomy for IC-ICA occlusion between 1 January 2019 and 31 March 2021. Results Out of 91 IC-ICA occlusions, the ADAPT was the first choice in 20 (22%) and the SAVE in 71 (78%). A BGC was used in 32 (35%) cases, always in conjunction with the SAVE technique. The use of SAVE technique without BGC was associated with the least risk of distal embolization (DE) in the territory occluded (44% vs. 75% when ADAPT technique was used; p= 0.03) and achieved first pass effect (FPE) more frequently (51% vs. 25%, p= 0.09). When the SAVE technique was used, BGC (BGC-SAVE) compared to no BGC (NoBGC-SAVE) was associated with a tendency for less DE (31% vs. 44%, p= 0.3), more FPE (63% vs. 51%, p= 0.5), the same median number of passes (1, p= 0.8) and similar groin-to-recanalization times (36.5 vs. 35.5min, p= 0.5), none of which reached statistical significance. Conclusion Our findings support the use of SAVE technique for IC-ICA occlusions; the added benefit of BGC compared to long sheaths was not remarkable in this sample

    Get PDF
This internship report appears within the scope of the Master's Degree in Pre-School and Teaching the 1st CEB which its main objective is to obtain a master's degree in these respective educational areas. In alignment with this purpose, we seek to portray in a critical and reflective way the work developed throughout the three pedagogical practices; in Pre-School classes (with children between 5 and 6 years old) and 1st Cycle of Education Basic (with the 1st year and 4th year of schooling). Regarding its structure, the report is organized into two complementary parts, namely, the Theoretical and Methodological Framework and the Pedagogical Intervention. In a first stage, the theoretical and methodological bases that supported the pedagogical action will be summarized and, in a second stage, we will reflect on themselves, articulating with some moments of learning. Associated to the pedagogical practices, the methodology of action-research was fundamental, it allowed articulating the rationale with the pedagogical intervention. In this way, by adopting an investigative attitude, it was possible to identify the weaknesses of both the group and the classes and mitigate them by adjusting the pedagogical action. Therefore, we sought to answer the following questions: How to Promote Education and Acquisition of Healthy Eating Habits in Children Pre Room: “Relearning to eat”?; How can I promote motivation to learning in the 1st year class? and How to stimulate and enhance skills of students in the 4th year class, in favour of learning?, respectively. In this sense, this report comprises a set of reasoned learnings and reflections that mark the beginning of acquisition of knowledge for teaching and that show the course traced, the willingness to learn more and help all children and students to achieve knowledge in a meaningful, autonomous and conscious way

    Get PDF
In recent decades, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been considered essential tools to enhance the teaching and learning process. However, when used for non-academic purposes, they can negatively impact students' performance. The present study aims to characterize and describe the relationship between teachers' perceptions of students' use of ICT for non-academic purposes, self-efficacy perceptions, and engagement in their professional activities. The sample consisted of 86 participants, university teachers aged between 26 and 68 years old. The instruments used in the study were the Sociodemographic and Professional Questionnaire, the Questionnaire on teachers' perceptions regarding students' use of ICT for non-academic purposes in the classroom context, the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, all validated for the Portuguese population. The study results suggest a positive relationship between teachers' self-efficacy and their engagement in the workplace. Consequently, it was found that students' use of ICT for non-academic purposes does not affect their self-efficacy but does have a significant impact on their engagement. These findings are particularly useful for education stakeholders as they provide valuable information that can contribute to the development of more suitable strategies to promote a healthier educational environment

    Get PDF
This report is part of the Pedagogical Internship process, carried out in a public school in the municipality of Funchal, included in the Master's Degree in Teaching Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education at the University of Madeira. This document aims to explain in a contextualized way all the options associated with the activities carried out during the internship, with an emphasis on developing a reflective and critical capacity in the face of the challenges and experiences lived in the teaching-learning process. In this sense, and with the aim of clearly and precisely presenting the work carried out and the resulting personal growth, the report reveals a set of different activities related to the teaching internship, namely Teaching Practice, Intervention Activities in the School Community, Integration Activities in the Environment and Scientific-Pedagogical Actions that contributed to a more transversal training. In this way, this internship played a crucial role in our training as Physical Education teachers, providing us with a set of essential skills for our future professional performance. The PE teacher must consider the individual differences of each student in order to promote quality learning, because teaching is a process that not only serves to ensure the development of the abilities and potential of the best, but also serves to guarantee the success of those students who don't have as many conditions or opportunities to achieve maximum success. It's important to have as deep an understanding as possible of each student's abilities so that we can readjust teaching to suit them. It is crucial to pay special attention to those who face the greatest difficulties, to involve, engage and motivate them. This was our focus during the internship period. In this sense, the teaching internship, enabled us to acquire a set of professional and personal skills that are fundamental to identifying and solving teaching problems

Translingualism and identity through the (re)cognition of some Madeiran regionalisms by Luso-Venezuelans and Venezuelans

    Get PDF
Departing from the results obtained in the written answers to a lexical semantic questionnaire applied to Luso-Venezuelans and Venezuelans about some Madeiran regionalisms, the concepts of translinguism and identity are discussed from the point of view of written production, especially by learners of Portuguese Heritage Language as emerging bilinguals. It is intended to assess the strategies of translingualism in writing and compare the (re)cognition of vocabulary as an identity mark of Madeira by Luso-Venezuelans (with a hybrid identity) and by Venezuelans with the results obtained from Madeirans who have always lived on the island. Translingualism appears in the use of L1, Spanish (from Venezuela), and in the mixture of this with Portuguese. It was observed that the most recognized words correspond to the most used in Madeira, according to previous research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
