    Losing a landscape: havant thicket reservoir

    Ancient woodland and natural habitats in the United Kingdom are declining despite the urgent need to tackle critical biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. This project focuses on the current construction of the Havant Thicket Reservoir, a 8.7 billion litre storage reservoir spanning 160 hectares just north of Portsmouth on the south coast. The site contains rare grasslands and ancient woodlands and is home to rare species of bats, newts and skylarks. Before construction started, Frankie Knight explored the landscape and was shocked by the natural beauty that was going to be destroyed. She responded by connecting with her local community, interviewing and photographing 11 members of the Stop the Chop campaign group (now known as Havant Thicket for Nature). Further audio recordings and photographs captured the grassland, the avenue of ancient oaks, and waterways that run through the marsh, all of which have now been lost. The photographs were taken on medium format film, developed using seaweed collected locally and fixed with saltwater, demonstrating alternative ways of working using non-toxic, environmentally conscious, and sustainable approaches. The resulting images explore the aesthetics of imperfection, human nature and allow space for imagination. The name of each image relates to location using What3words app so that a record can be kept of what will be soon underwater. By giving a voice to the local people that use the space rather than the developers and council leaders that make the decisions, the project allows a more democratic and truthful response to the proposed development. Although a political issue, the work steers the conversation to the emotional and spiritual elements to allow for deeper engagement and reflection whilst exploring the artist’s role in fighting the destruction of natural habitats.     Wellness tourism: a bibliometric analysis approach

    An emerging field, wellness tourism can reduce stress levels and foster positive emotions, leading to a healthy balance of body, mind, and spirit and satisfying consumer experiences that enhance personal well-being. As a distinct subcategory of health tourism, it is often erroneously interchanged with medical tourism in the literature. Moreover, up to this point, no comprehensive review has assessed the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on wellness tourism research. A bibliometric review was conducted to fill this gap. Data was collected in June 2023 through the Web of Science (WoS) database. The selection process encompassed articles published from January 2013 to June 2023. A total of 143 relevant peer-reviewed articles published in English-language journals were selected. Data were analyzed through evaluation techniques based on productivity and impact measures and relational techniques via mapping the results through VOSviewer software. Based on these findings, potential directions and suggestions for future research were proposed

    A systematic review of the physical, physiological, nutritional and anthropometric profiles of soccer referees

    Background The importance of soccer referees is widely accepted by international soccer organizations and gov erning bodies, although there is little research summarizing and appraising the literature on soccer referees. The aim of this study was to systematically review the information related to physical demands, nutrition and physiological profling of soccer referees. Methods Conforming with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guide lines, searches of three electronic databases (Web of Sciences, PubMed and Scopus) were conducted on 24 April 2022. The following search terms were used: (Soccer OR football AND refer*) AND (physical OR physiolo* OR load* OR “body composition” OR “fat mass” OR “fat free mass” OR “body size” OR “nutrition*” OR “nutritional assessment” OR “nutritional intake” OR “macronutrient*” OR “micronutrient*”). The inclusion criteria of the manuscripts written in English were that articles with male and/or female soccer referees and included relevant data concerning perfor mance, physical testing, nutrition, body composition, body size and/or physiology of soccer referees. The tools devel oped by the National Institute of Health were used to assess risk of bias according to the study design. Results In total, 110 manuscripts were included in the present review. Match activities of soccer referees and assis tant referees are not comparable. Variation in performance is infuenced by competitive level and competitive sched ules. Additionally, match performance is often used to validate feld protocols. The associations between match indi cators and feld protocols were not constant across the included studies, particularly in short-maximal tests. An age decline in physical performance was not conclusive. Body size did not discriminate between referees and assistant referees, as well as referees of diferent competitive levels. Few studies focused on nutritional guidelines among refer ees, particularly exercise energy expenditure. Energy intake was comparable across studies, but referees did not follow the daily dietary recommendations. Aerobic output was frequently assessed, and it was not comparable to the values for soccer players. Conclusions Although there are decreases in the running profles of older referees, they maintain the same dis tances from the ball, and thus, age per se should not be used to defne participation at the international level. The assessment of physical ftness warrants future consideration given the levels of fatigue that are apparent at the end of matches. In order to attain ideal levels of body composition, future studies need to provide guidelines for daily energy expenditure and nutritional intake.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Impacto das alterações climáticas nas atividades de engenharia civil

    As alterações climáticas são variações meteorológicas que já existem desde a formação do planeta Terra há cerca de 4.5 mil milhões de anos. O maior problema que a Terra está a passar atualmente é o aquecimento global, que é causado pelo aumento dos gases emitidos com efeito de estufa, tendo como consequências o aumento do nível médio do mar, precipitações extremas, variações drásticas de temperaturas, ventos fortes, entre outros. Neste sentido, esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar o impacto das alterações climáticas nas atividades de Engenharia Civil. São apresentadas as causas e consequências das alterações climáticas bem como a sua quantificação a nível geral. Efetua-se uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a evolução política ambiental e exploração das instituições, convenções e normas existentes. Após a abordagem do tema em geral, são identificadas as medidas de mitigação e de adaptação que têm vindo a ser tomadas, concluindo com um balanço das mudanças até à atualidade. Pretende-se esclarecer os impactos das alterações climáticas para cada ramo da Engenharia Civil: Geotecnia, Hidráulica, Construção, Estruturas, Vias de Comunicação e Planeamento Urbano. Dentro de cada uma destas áreas, são identificados e quantificados os agentes mais condicionantes das alterações climáticas que alteram as atividades de Engenharia Civil. Por conseguinte aos impactos, são apresentadas várias propostas de alteração de execução das atividades de Engenharia Civil, tendo em conta as fases do ciclo de vida útil de uma edificação, sendo essas a fase de projeto, fase de obra e fase de manutenção. As fases mencionadas têm de ser previstas e considerados os agentes de maior relevância, criando maior resistência e durabilidade às edificações tendo em conta os eventos de meteorologia atuais. Dada a pertinência dessa preocupação com o enquadramento ao tema, identificam-se vários exemplos distintos, já existentes a nível mundial da Engenharia Civil, que contribuem para a mitigação e adaptação às alterações climáticas, passando por reforços costeiros, melhoramentos de drenagens urbanas, criação de bacias de retenção e espaços verdes, entre outros. Desta forma, pode-se concluir que a execução das atividades de Engenharia Civil tem sido prejudicada de um modo geral pelos agentes extremos atuais, e para tal prevê-se a criação de novos desafios, estudos e tecnologias desde a fase de projeto à fase de manutenção. Contudo, as obras de Engenharia Civil têm dado bons contributos para a mitigação e adaptação às alterações climáticas no planeta e no ser humano.Climate changes are meteorological variations that have existed since the formation of planet Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. The biggest problem that the Earth is currently experiencing is global warming, which is caused by the increase in greenhouse gases emitted, resulting in an increase in the average sea level, extreme precipitation, drastic temperature variations, strong winds, between others. In this sense, this dissertation aims to analyze the impact of climate change on Civil Engineering activities. The causes and consequences of climate change are presented, as well as their quantification at a general level. A bibliographic review is carried out on the evolution of environmental policy and the exploration of existing institutions, conventions, and norms. After approaching the theme in general, the mitigation and adaptation measures that have been taken are identified, concluding with a balance of the changes to date. It is intended to clarify the impacts of climate change for each branch of Civil Engineering: Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Construction, Structures, Roads, and Urban Planning. Within each of these areas, the most conditioning agents of climate change that modify Civil Engineering activities are identified and quantified. As a result of the impacts, several proposals are presented to change the execution of Civil Engineering activities, taking into account the phases of the useful life cycle of a building, these being the design phase, construction phase and maintenance phase. The mentioned phases must be foreseen and considered the most relevant agents, creating greater resistance and durability to the buildings taking into account the current meteorological events. Given the pertinence of this concern with framing the theme, several different examples are identified, already existing worldwide in Civil Engineering, which contribute to the mitigation and adaptation to climate changes, including coastal reinforcements, improvements in urban drainage, creation of retention basins and green spaces, among others. In this way, it can be concluded that the execution of Civil Engineering activities has been hampered in general by current extreme agents, and for that it is foreseen the creation of new challenges, studies, and technologies from the design phase to the maintenance phase. However, Civil Engineering works have made good contributions to mitigate and adapt the climate changes effects on the planet and in human beings

    Designing player agency experiences for environmental awareness gameplay

    This study applies the creation of a survival-themed video game called Little Farm Island. The goal of the game is to provide players with an immersive and challenging survival experience that tests their problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities. The game Little Farm Island is set in a low poly environment with limited resources and features character customization to enhance player immersion. The objective of this project is to design and implement gameplay mechanics that can effectively increase player engagement and enjoyment, evaluating the effectiveness of these mechanics through playtesting and analysis based on survey data gathered by players. Through the development process, various mechanics were enforced and tested, including growing crops and open-world exploration. The results of the playtesting showed the potential of this game for promoting environmental awareness and problem-solving skills through engaging gameplay. In addition, the game was found to provide players with knowledge and skills that can be applied in real life, and the importance of caring strategies for increasing player satisfaction and happiness through meaningful gameplay experiences. This project demonstrates that is possible to create an engaging and immersive survival game through the use of well-implemented mechanics and character customization.O jogo Little Farm Island é ambientado em um ambiente low poly com recursos limitados e conta com personalização de personagem para aumentar an imersão do jogador. O objetivo deste projeto é implementar mecânicas de jogo que aumentem efetivamente o seu engajamento e a felicidade dos jogadores durante a jogabilidade, avaliando a eficácia dessas mecânicas por meio de testes provenientes da sessão de jogo e a análise com base em um questionário realizado para os jogadores do mesmo. Durante o processo de desenvolvimento, várias mecânicas foram implementadas e testadas, incluindo o cultivo de plantas e a exploração do mundo aberto disponível no jogo. Os resultados dos testes mostraram o potencial deste jogo para promover a conscientização ambiental e habilidades de resolução de problemas por meio de jogabilidade cativante. O jogo fornece aos jogadores conhecimentos e habilidades que podem ser aplicados na vida real em meio de consciencialização ambiental, criando estratégias úteis para futuros desenvolvedores de jogos usarem mecânicas e experiências significativas construidas neste estudo. Demonstrando que é possível criar um jogo de sobrevivência imersivo através do uso de mecânicas bem estruturadas, exemplificando que a personalização do personagem implementado para Little Farm Island cria um sentido de imersão entre jogador e jogo positivamente

    Utilização de um loop fechado de biofeedback para aumentar a motivação durante a aprendizagem de matemática

    Os estudantes nativos digitais apresentam maior facilidade a utilizar tecnologias computacionais, comparativamente aos imigrantes digitais que têm dificuldade a utilizar as mesmas. Isto abre a pos sibilidade da introdução de abordagens mais ativas durante o ensino dos conteúdos das disciplinas, como as abordagens baseadas em jogos. Uma das disciplinas que pode beneficiar com este tipo de abordagem é a disciplina de Mate mática, considerada por muitos alunos como uma matéria “muito difícil” e “aborrecida”, devido a não estar adaptada aos interesses dos alunos nativos digitais. Concretamente, esta disciplina pode beneficiar da concretização de uma solução mais ativa de ensino, que se adapta em tempo real aos dados de motivação dos alunos, através da introdução de estratégias persuasivas num jogo, que apenas ocorrem se o jogador diminuir os seus níveis de motivação durante a aprendizagem, de modo a influenciar o comportamento do mesmo. Para isso, neste estudo são utilizados os sensores de EEG e os questionários IMI (Intrinsic Motivation Inventory) como métodos de avaliação da mo tivação dos participantes, sendo o EEG utilizado para mostrar eventos especiais, em tempo real, no jogo, caso os níveis de motivação do participante se encontrem abaixo do limiar de envolvimento calculado. Nesta dissertação, efetuou-se uma experiência com 21 alunos do ensino secundário, visando responder a quatro hipóteses de investigação, sendo estas: HI1: “Os sensores EEG são métodos de avaliação mais eficazes do que os questionários no que toca a medir a motivação dos alunos durante a aprendizagem”; HI2: “Um jogo didático de Matemática é mais motivador que uma abordagem tradicional de ensino”; HI3: “A introdução de elementos persuasivos durante o jogo educacional aumenta a motivação do aluno”; HI4: “A abordagem baseada em jogos é mais eficaz que um método tradicional de ensino”. Os testes destas hipóteses permitem-nos verificar a eficácia da aprendizagem baseada em jogos, dos sensores EEG como métodos de avaliação de motivação e da sua utilização para introduzir elementos persuasivos em tempo real.Digital native students are more likely to use computer technologies when compared to digital immigrants who struggle to use them. This opens the possibility of introducing more active appro aches such as game-based approaches during the teaching process. One of the subjects that can benefit from this type of approach is the subject of Mathematics, since it is considered by many students as a “very difficult” and “boring” subject due to not being adapted to the interests of digital native students. This subject can benefit from the integration of a more active teaching solution that adapts, in real time, to the student’s motivation data through the introduction of persuasive strategies during a game, which only occurs if the player decreases his motivation levels in order to influence their behavior. This study uses EEG sensors and IMI (Intrinsic Motivation Inventory) questionnaires as methods to evaluate the participant’s motivation, with the EEG being used to show special motivation events during the game, in real time, in order to keep the participant’s motivation levels high. In this dissertation, an experiment was carried out by 21 high school students, aiming to answer four research questions, namely: HI1: “The EEG sensors are a more effective assessment tool than questionnaires when it comes to measuring the motivation of students during a learning process”; HI2: “A Mathematics learning game is more motivating than a traditional teaching approach”; HI3: “The introduction of persuasive elements during the educational game increases students’ moti vation”; HI4: “The game-based approach is more effective than a traditional teaching approach”. Testing these research questions allow us to verify the effectiveness of game-based learning, of EEG sensors as motivational assessment methods and of their use to introduce persuasive elements in real time

    Meta-emoção parental e exaustão parental

    O termo de Meta-emoção Parental é definido como o conjunto de pensamentos e sentimentos que os pais têm em relação às suas próprias emoções e às dos seus filhos. As emoções negativas representam para os pais um grande desafio na socialização emocional. O presente estudo tem como objetivo averiguar qual a relação da Meta-emoção Parental com os níveis de Exaustão Parental, estudando o papel de variáveis sociodemográficas, e coparentalidade. A amostra é constituida por 122 pais e mães de crianças entre os 6 e 10 anos de idade, residentes em Portugal, às quais foram administradas o questionário de reações parentais às emoções negativas dos filhos (RPEN), questionário de Avaliação da Exaustão Parental (QAEP), e Escala de Relação Coparental. Os resultados indicam correlações significativas entre a reações parentais não apoiantes às emoções negativas dos filhos e os níveis de exaustão parental. A coparentalidade prediz significativamente a saturação com o papel parental e as reações parentais não apoiantes às emoções negativas dos filhos. Os resultados deste estudo fornecem pistas relevantes para as intervenções que visem a promoção de competências parentais, coparentalidade e prevenção da exaustão parental.Parental Meta-emotion is defined as the set of thoughts and feelings that parents have in relation to their own emotions and those of their children (Gottman et al., 1997). Negative emotions represent a major challenge for parents in emotional socialization (Katz et al., 2012). The present study aims to investigate the relationship between Parental Meta emotion and the levels of Parental Exhaustion, studying the role os sociodemographic variables, and coparenting. The sample consists of 122 fathers and mothers of children between 6 and 10 years old, residing in Portugal, who were applied the questionnaire of COPING with Children̕s Negative Emotions Scale (CCNES, RPEN, adapted by Alves & Cruz, 2011), the Parental Burnout Assesment (PBA, QEAP, adapted by Matias et al., 2018), and Coparental Relationship Scale (adapted by Gaspar & Fontainne, 2018). The findings indicate significant correlations between non-supportive parental reactions to children’s negative emotions and levels of parental exhaustion. Coparenting significantly predicts feelings of being fed up with one’s parental role and non supportive parenting reactions to children’s negative emotions. This research’s results offer significant clues for understanding of, and interventions in, human behavior

    O translinguismo na língua falada de um migrante madeirense na África do Sul e na Venezuela: relato de memória e identidade translocal e transcultural

    : A partir da entrevista feita a um migrante da Madeira na África do Sul e na Venezuela, faz-se um estudo qualitativo temático e linguístico, baseado na linguística de corpus, no conceito de translinguismo e na linguística sociocultural. A análise temática centra-se na emigração madeirense para a África do Sul que, como fuga ao serviço militar na guerra colonial portuguesa, decorreu sobretudo nos anos 60 do século XX. Os clandestinos viajavam para Moçambique, mais precisamente para a atual cidade de Maputo, sem necessidade de passaporte. Depois, tentavam a sua sorte através da passagem clandestina da fronteira ou “a salto” para a África do Sul, onde o entrevistado foi preso por estar a trabalhar ilegalmente. Regressou à Madeira e foi para a guerra na Guiné-Bissau. Quando terminou o serviço militar, emigrou para a Venezuela, onde esteve mais de 40 anos, tendo regressado à sua terra natal em dezembro de 2016, devido à grave crise social e económica naquele país. A análise linguística da fala do migrante, através do relato de memória, permite observar a sua identidade sociocultural e translocal ou transcultural. O informante bi/multilingue recorre ao translinguismo, mescla do Espanhol da Venezuela com o Português, e a algum léxico do Inglês ao falar da África do Sul, revelando também traços caraterísticos do Português falado na Madeira e do Português popular.Based on an interview with a migrant from Madeira in South Africa and Venezuela, a qualitative thematic and linguistic study is carried out, based on corpus linguistics, the concept of translingualism and sociocultural linguistics. The thematic analysis focuses on Madeiran emigration to South Africa, which was an escape from military service in the Portuguese colonial war that took place mainly in the 60s of the 20th century. Illegal migrants travelled to Mozambique, more precisely to the current city of Maputo, without the need for a passport. Then they tried their luck by clandestinely crossing the border or “jumping” to South Africa, where the interviewee was arrested for working illegally. He returned to Madeira and went to war in Guinea-Bissau. When he finished his military service, he emigrated to Venezuela, where he spent more than 40 years, having returned to his homeland in December 2016, due to the serious social and economic crisis in that country. The linguistic analysis of the migrant's speech, through the memory report, allows us to observe their sociocultural and translocal or transcultural identity. The bi/multilingual informant uses translingualism, mixing Venezuelan Spanish with Portuguese, and some English lexicon when speaking of South Africa, also revealing characteristic features of Portuguese spoken in Madeira and popular Portuguese.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
