Internet of Things technology allows each object around of us to remain connected to the Internet without any human interference, that is, objects can now establish direct connections with other “things”. The same situation happens in our houses as they now incorporate parts of the IoT technology, as intelligent devices become more accessible for any user that is interested. Generally, these devices work only with an application that belongs to a certain manufacturer, but optionally these devices can be implemented in operating systems that are designed to manage multiple devices from different manufactures. This document explores this topic of operating systems for smart houses, studying two systems: Home Assistant and Hubitat, that were proposed for the development of this thesis. This thesis, gives an overview of the concept of smart house and explores other concepts and projects that are related to these themes, and describes the architectures, the advantages, and disadvantages by comparing of these two systems

Assessment of the prediction power of forced ageing methodology on lager beer aldehyde evolution during maritime transportation

    Get PDF
The globalisation of the beer market forces brewers to have methodologies that rapidly evaluate the evolution of beer flavour stability. Commonly used forced ageing methods have limitations since temperature and transportation conditions (temperature, vibrations, long-distance travel, and other factors) impact beer quality. This study assessed the prediction power of a forced ageing methodology on the evolution of aldehydes during maritime transportation across four sample groups (maritime transport, storage simulation, and three ageing periods: 7, 21, and 28 days at 37 ◦C), which differed in their bottle-opening system (either crown cap or ring pull cap). The results revealed that forced ageing up to 28 days could estimate the evolution of phenylacetaldehyde, 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylpropanal, and hexanal during maritime transport. In contrast, the benzaldehyde content was consistently underestimated, on average, 0.8 times lower. In general, the ageing conditions significantly favoured the formation or liberation from a bound state, up to 2.2 times higher, of trans-2-nonenal, acetaldehyde, and 5-hydroximethylfurfural in comparison to the levels registered on exportation simulation beers. Moreover, forced-aged beers with ring pull caps developed quantifiable levels of nonanal and increased phenylacetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and acetaldehyde content over time. Moreover, thermal stress induced a continuous increase in the extent of beer staling, up to seven times higher, in most samples.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The importance of monitoring cortisol in the agri-food sector: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Cortisol monitoring in the agri-food sector is considered a valuable tool due to its direct correlation with growth, reproduction, the immune system, and overall animal welfare. Strategies to monitor this stress hormone and its correlation to food quality and security have been studied in fish farming and the livestock industry. This review discusses studies on monitoring cortisol in the food industry for the first time. The impact of cortisol on animal production, quality, and the security of food products, and the analytical procedures commonly implemented for sample pre-concentration and quantification by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, are reviewed and discussed according to the results published in the period 2012–2022. Aquaculture, or fish farming, is the leading agri-food sector, where cortisol’s impact and usefulness are better known than in livestock. The determination of cortisol in fish not only allows for an increase in the production rate, but also the ability to monitor the water quality, enhancing the sustainable development of this industry. In cattle, further studies are needed since it has mainly been used to detect the administration of illicit substances. Current analytical control and monitoring techniques are expensive and often depend on invasive sampling, not allowing fast or real-time monitoring.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

European Union: the commitment of hope, human rights, equality, development and education

    Get PDF
The European Union is strongly committed to the idea of equal rights and respect for difference in all its dimensions. In this reflection I will address the gender perspective and the importance of foreign policies to strengthen strategies and measures that promote education for equality and its implications in terms of health and personal, social, cultural, and economic empowerment. The vulnerability of girls and young women requires a specific focus on gender issues and access to all levels of education. Thus, education is assumed as a commitment to equality, that is, a broad education for behavior changes in relation to gender violence, involving all men, women, boys, girls and communities. In fact, we consider women's rights to be human rights and we want to show why human rights and their empowerment are fundamental to the development of a region and a country.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Endocannabinoid Degradation Enzyme Inhibitors as Potential Antipsychotics: A Medicinal Chemistry Perspective

    Get PDF
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a very important role in numerous physiological and pharmacological processes, such as those related to the central nervous system (CNS), including learning, memory, emotional processing, as well pain control, inflammatory and immune response, and as a biomarker in certain psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, the half-life of the natural ligands responsible for these effects is very short. This perspective describes the potential role of the inhibitors of the enzymes fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MGL), which are mainly responsible for the degradation of endogenous ligands in psychic disorders and related pathologies. The examination was carried out considering both the impact that the classical exogenous ligands such as ∆ 9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and (−)-trans-cannabidiol (CBD) have on the ECS and through an analysis focused on the possibility of predicting the potential toxicity of the inhibitors before they are subjected to clinical studies. In particular, cardiotoxicity (hERG liability), probably the worst early adverse reaction studied during clinical studies focused on acute toxicity, was predicted, and some of the most used and robust metrics available were considered to select which of the analyzed compounds could be repositioned as possible oral antipsychotics.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Numerical and experimental investigation of thermal regimes of thermionic cathodes of arc plasma torches

    Get PDF
The modelling method based on decoupling the simulation of the cathodic part of the arc (the cathode and the near-cathode non-equilibrium plasma layer) from the simulation of the arc on the whole has been extended to cathodes of arc plasma torches, consisting of an insert with a conical tip, made of pure or doped tungsten, and a surrounding water-cooled copper holder. The method was validated by comparison with the experiment, performed on a 200 A DC arc in atmospheric-pressure argon. Standard work function of polycrystalline tungsten of 4.54 eV was used for modelling of pure-tungsten insert and a good agreement with the experiment was found with respect to both the insert tip shape and the temperature distribution in the tip, recorded in the stable operation mode. There are no unambiguous data on the work function for arc cathodes made of doped tungsten, although in situ measurements of the effective work function of cathodes of high-pressure arc discharges provide useful hints. On the other hand, the experiments reported in this work show that the tip temperatures of inserts made of tungsten doped with 1.5% of thorium, or lanthanum, or yttrium, recorded during the stable-mode operation at the arc current of 200 A, vary in a rather narrow range 3100–3200 K. This suggests that the work functions of doped tungsten inserts, operated in the stable mode, are close to each other as well. Indeed, the results of modelling with the same value of the work function of 3 eV give a reasonably good agreement with the experiment in all three cases

Underlying features of prostate cancer—Statistics, risk factors, and emerging methods for Its diagnosis

    Get PDF
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most frequently occurring type of malignant tumor and a leading cause of oncological death in men. PCa is very heterogeneous in terms of grade, phenotypes, and genetics, displaying complex features. This tumor often has indolent growth, not compromising the patient’s quality of life, while its more aggressive forms can manifest rapid growth with progression to adjacent organs and spread to lymph nodes and bones. Nevertheless, the overtreatment of PCa patients leads to important physical, mental, and economic burdens, which can be avoided with careful monitoring. Early detection, even in the cases of locally advanced and metastatic tumors, provides a higher chance of cure, and patients can thus go through less aggressive treatments with fewer side effects. Furthermore, it is important to offer knowledge about how modifiable risk factors can be an effective method for reducing cancer risk. Innovations in PCa diagnostics and therapy are still required to overcome some of the limitations of the current screening techniques, in terms of specificity and sensitivity. In this context, this review provides a brief overview of PCa statistics, reporting its incidence and mortality rates worldwide, risk factors, and emerging screening strategies.</jats:p
