ligações singulares e simbólicas com as coisas materiais. The conviviality and closeness with homeless people residing at the Municipal
Emergency Reception Centre (CAEM) of Santa Bárbara, in the parish of Arroios, in
Lisbon, enabled us to perceive that this vulnerable group (socially, financially, and
psychologically), marginalized and socially excluded, have in common relationships of
significant symbolic value with their personal objects. With the aim of studying the social
history of the things they carry, their meanings and the structure of the trajectories of
these social relationships, as well as the construction of values and meanings, this study
aims to interview a group of residents and record their experiences through images.
personal objects, in order to develop an exhibition that allows us to investigate the
meaning of objects within the life history of these individuals. Through semi-structured
interviews and photographic recording, we want to tell traces of the biography of
homeless people and their objects, to act as a study that brings the academic community
closer to this social group and promotes reflections on the unique connections and
symbolic with material things.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The artistic and geophilosophical project "The Earth as Event," in its
cinematographic aspect, operates a problematization of the relationship to the Earth and
nature. It is a transdisciplinary project that, by its essence, leads to new images of the
Earth, questioning the historically and ethologically marked notion of territory. There is
a generalized feeling that the territorial logic that captures the Earth is reaching a critical
moment, of which the climate crisis and the entry into the Anthropocene is a strong
indication. The film “The Earth as Event II”, through its use of materials and the
transduction of the arts that it develops, operates a deterritorialization, accentuating the
displacement of materials and questioning them in their almost pre-human originality.
Only cinema has the potency to deterritorialize the logic of historical borders without
illusory reterritorialization. The appearance of the Earth in its elementality, as cinema
gives way to it without dominating it, crossed with phrases that are also nomadic, which
punctuate the video, opens up political possibilities for thinking about the relationship
with the Earth and the community of those who inhabit it. We are dealing with a creative
expression that intends to intervene and give visibility to other possibilities of inhabiting
the Earth. But it also aims at another, broader purpose: to draw attention to man's place
in planetary history, because the moment is decisive, and to confer maximum lucidity
regarding the impending risks.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Potential of Machine Learning for Wind Speed and Direction Short-Term Forecasting: A Systematic Review
Wind forecasting, which is essential for numerous services and safety, has significantly
improved in accuracy due to machine learning advancements. This study reviews 23 articles from
1983 to 2023 on machine learning for wind speed and direction nowcasting. The wind prediction
ranged from 1 min to 1 week, with more articles at lower temporal resolutions. Most works employed
neural networks, focusing recently on deep learning models. Among the reported performance
metrics, the most prevalent were mean absolute error, mean squared error, and mean absolute
percentage error. Considering these metrics, the mean performance of the examined works was
0.56 m/s, 1.10 m/s, and 6.72%, respectively. The results underscore the novel effectiveness of machine
learning in predicting wind conditions using high-resolution time data and demonstrated that deep
learning models surpassed traditional methods, improving the accuracy of wind speed and direction
forecasts. Moreover, it was found that the inclusion of non-wind weather variables does not benefit
the model’s overall performance. Further studies are recommended to predict both wind speed and
direction using diverse spatial data points, and high-resolution data are recommended along with
the usage of deep learning models.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Revamping kombucha production: achieving consistency and probiotic potential through a tailor-made microbial consortium
Revising the production of kombucha, this investigation focused on the utilization of a custom-designed starter
culture, aiming to establish a consistent, probiotic-rich beverage. A diverse selection of three acetic acid bacteria
and two yeast strains was examined to determine the optimal microbial combination. A meticulous examination
of the fermentation timeline was undertaken, juxtaposing forced and natural carbonation techniques. A
comprehensive analysis encompassing fermentation metabolites, sensory acceptance, volatile compound
profiling, and shelf-life testing was executed to ensure the beverage’s superior quality and stability. The resultant
probiotic kombucha was produced successfully after 48 h of fermentation with a symbiotic assembly of Koma gataeibacter saccharivorans, Brettanomyces anomala, and Kluyveromyces marxianus. Forced carbonated kombucha
exhibited acceptance levels rivaling commercial brands, maintaining an alcohol content consistently beneath the
0.5% (v/v) regulatory standard for a 60-day storage period. Specific esters, namely ethyl 3-methyl butanoate,
phenethyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and 2-methyl-1-propyl acetate, were identified as key determinants of
kombucha flavor profiles. The 90-day shelf-life study indicated a consistent presence of viable probiotic
K. marxianus cells in the kombucha. These findings contribute to understanding probiotic Kombucha fermentation and demonstrate the potential for producing a high-quality beverage with desirable sensory characteristics
through a custom-designed microbial consortium.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Feminine/ masculine/ neutral at the linguistic phenomena @ from the inclusive language: gender grammar in latin, portuguese, and others romance languages
É o que se pretende observar, sobretudo, para o português.§e Economic and Social Council of Portugal approved in 2021 a
handbook about Inclusive Language at the Public Administration. In 1999,
mostly 22 years before, UNESCO prepared a Guidelines for Neutral Language
reporting to sex, explaining the grammatical intersection between gender and
sex. Some other institutions had given their point of view about Linguistics and
Grammatical issues that interest the international community, because anyone
seems to have something to say about this subject and a personal position. A
changing is happening, and it is evident in the Romance Languages. §is is what
we want to observe specially for the Portuguese.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A language derives from a community and thus an ethnic-cultural heritage
manifests itself in that language. The matters of individual or collective identities
associate themselves to linguistics. The concept of “patrimony” implies inherited assets
which belong to someone, and language is considered “patrimony” due to belonging to a
collective. Linguistic patrimony intertwines with athroponymy, as with toponymy. In the
case of “Pereira”, as well as that of other names of trees present in onomastics, seems like
an example of that. Associating anthroponymy and toponymy, the objective is to analyse
“Pereira” from a linguistic point of view, through an historiographic lens. In this case, the
geographic area of study is the island of Madeira, focusing on the years 1900-1910 and
2010-2011. To the effect, two research methodologies are used: bibliographic revision
and numeric data analysis. Primary and secondary sources are combined in this
bibliographic research: encyclopedias, dictionaries and encyclopedic dictionaries,
scientific articles, local publications, books, dissertations, and diverse studies. For the
numeric data analysis, sources like parish marriage records and ANACOM data records
are used. This study dedicated to “Pereira”, within the scope of Linguistic Patrimony,
aims to contribute to the deepening of scientific knowledge of regional anthroponymy
and toponymy, in search of a reflection around the solidification of the insular identity,
not only of the families that carry the surname in question (antroponymy), but also of the
madeiran linguist community through toponymy. A brief survey is made for other tree
names interconnecting anthroponymy and toponymy because language is an identifying
and unifying tool of a group
Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents’ growth and development
Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong
health and well-being1–6
. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with
measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height
and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis
of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to
2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural
counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height
advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western
countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was
for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania,
south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these
countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height
or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The
difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural
areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI
increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan
Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in
much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have
diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they
have amplified.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Ethical procedures in scientific research
This work has as its theme the ethical procedures of research and aims to provide a framework of
practical guidelines to ensure the protection of all actors involved in the development of scientific
knowledge, particularly at the stage of research design and project.
This is a theoretical reflection on the ethical dimension of data collection practices and the limits
that the researcher should consciously attend to in the scientific research process. For this
reflection, I carried out a literature review and a document analysis of several legal documents,
highlighting the European directive on data protection. This led to several questions, namely: what
documents should be ensured in the research project design process? What is the scope of
informed consent and how can anonymity and confidentiality of data be preserved? These and
other questions are answered in a thoughtful way for those who understand that there is no science
without ethics, nor ethics without conscience.
Here the hermeneutic method is the natural choice because it allows the interpretation of questions
related to values and principles that must be contextualized. This interpretative analysis requires
asking questions related to duty, but also to the norm or law. With this questioning it is hoped that
the reader will understand in a systematized way the ethical procedures of research and will be
able to draw on a documentary listing of the ethical point of view that will protect the informants, but
also the researcher himself and affiliating institutions or participants.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
preconceitos e silenciamentos. Neste sentido, a jovem cineasta latino-americana busca
In this article is an experience report on the research and work carried out by
the Brazilian video maker Cíntia Soares for the constitution of her documentary Elos:
translating the untranslatable (2022). In the (auto)biographical work, she promotes
intersections between her subjective experience as a person with a disability (PCD) and
broader social and historical contexts, directly linked to a past of prejudice and silencing.
In this sense, the young Latin American filmmaker seeks to explore a different territory
through filmmaking and the sensitive possibility of expression allowed by this language.
From this singular perspective and from the constructed filmic poetics itself, this
protagonist reflects on concepts such as memory and place, allowing herself to break
boundaries and promote crossings in search of desired new territories and differentiated
artistic and expressive possibilities linked to affection and inclusion.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
