Aim: To clinically assess the accuracy and reliability of different digital intraoral scanners in their ability to detect and determine maximum occlusal contacts in maximum intercuspation. Materials and Methods: Three different scanners were used to digitalise the intermaxillary relationship in maximum intercuspation of a sample of ten students from the Integrated Master's Degree in Dental Medicine (MIMD) at the Egas Moniz School of Health and Science. The number of contact points was counted on the occlusal record obtained after calibrating the scale for distances of less than 100 μm and the area of the maximum contact points was calculated using the Netfabb® software by means of boolean intersection of the digitalised models. In the statistical analysis, the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient were calculated, adopting a significance level of 5% (p ≤ 0.05). Results: When counting the number of contact points at maximum intercuspation, the highest level of correlation was found between TRIOS® and iTero™, which is a moderate value of correlation (r=0.694, p=0.026). In the detection of the area of these points, the only significant correlation value obtained was between TRIOS® and iTero™ (r=0.721, p=0.019). The scanner with the highest level of correlation between the areas and the number of contact points was found in CEREC®, with a moderate to high and significant Spearman Correlation Coefficient (r=0.709 and p=0.022). Conclusions: Although there is some similarity in the identification of contact points between some of the scanners evaluated, there is some variability and subjectivity in the interpretation of these results, highlighting the need to investigate the factors that cause these discrepancies and to develop standardised protocols that increase their reliability

Perspective chapter: age is not just a number: understanding ageism and its health implications for older adults

    No full text
Demographic changes present both benefits, such as the increased longevity of older individuals, and potential concerns, including ageist expressions. Ageism is a complex phenomenon, deeply rooted in modern societies, encompassing stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination that affect billions of older adults globally. The stereotypes surrounding older people combine both positive and negative traits, with negative aspects such as illness and dependence being socially emphasised. Emotional responses of pity and sympathy, linked to paternalistic or benevolent forms of prejudice, are commonly associated with these stereotypes. Ageism can manifest at micro, meso, and macro levels, and it can be directed towards other individuals or oneself. Stereotype Embodiment Theory offers insight into how age-based stereotypes influence self-perceptions of ageing and subsequently impact health and well-being. When stereotypes become self-relevant, they can act as either facilitators or barriers to the health outcomes of older persons. Internalised age stereotypes can result in self-fulfilling prophecies through three primary pathways: psychological, behavioural, and physiological. The detrimental effects of ageism on the health conditions of older adults compromise their active ageing, have been observed globally and have increased over time. Efforts to combat ageism must consider various factors across different levels and domains, requiring a coordinated international strategy for success. Three effective strategies include the development of policies and laws, educational and intergenerational contact interventions. Changing stereotypes is essential; it is crucial to rethink practices and institutional norms or policies that place older persons in positions of inequity or jeopardy while also promoting contact and solidarity between generations

Emotional diagnosis in patient relationship management

Research around facial expression of emotions has only made significant progress in the last two decades, remaining closely connected to the emerging empirical knowledge in the field of non-verbal communication. Understanding the phenomenon of Pain experience involves and raises questions across various healthcare specialties, and therefore, it should be approached in a necessarily multidisciplinary manner, emphasizing the Biopsychosocial nature of the pain phenomenon. It is essential to implement the true biopsychosocial model from a Patient-centered perspective, in which the Dentist should position themselves, in essence, within the context of the Dentist-Patient Relationship as a “reader of the facial expressions” of the Patient, with the relationship established with the “Silent Patient” functioning as a “therapeutic analgesia” within the context of the Dentist-Patient relationship. Nevertheless, the major challenge facing the Dentist in relation to the subjective language of Pain is a matter of time availability, both due to the demands of healthcare institution management models, which allocate little time for Therapeutic dialogue, and the intrapsychic availability of both the Patient and the Healthcare Professional

Simulating water application efficiency in pressurized irrigation systems: a computational approach

    No full text
The agricultural sector faces growing environmental and societal pressures to balance natural resource use with food security, particularly within the Water-EnergyFood-Ecosystems Nexus (WEFE). Increasing water demand, competition, and challenges like droughts and desertification are driving the need for innovative irrigation practices. Pressurized irrigation systems, such as sprinkler and micro-irrigation, are gaining prominence due to their automation, labor savings, and increased water application efficiency. To support farmers in designing and managing these systems, the R&D project AGIR developed a computational tool that simulates water application efficiency under site-specific conditions. The tool integrates key parameters, including system design, scheduling, soil properties, topography, meteorological data, and vegetation cover, providing a robust methodological framework with classification criteria for evaluating irrigation options. Validated using data from six case studies, the tool achieved simulated irrigation efficiencies of 73% to 90%, which are consistent with field observations. By simplifying complex irrigation requirement calculations, the model offers a user-friendly alternative while maintaining accuracy at the farm level. This innovative tool enables stakeholders to optimize irrigation systems, reduce water losses, and establish standardized recommendations for design, management, performance, and socio-economic considerations. It represents a significant step forward in supporting sustainable water management and advancing the goals of Agriculture 4.0

In recent years, there has been growing government investment in childcare centers in Portugal, essentially reflected in an increase in the coverage rate and the reinforcement of measures to promote access. Other recent public policies include the approval of the first official document on pedagogical activity - the Pedagogical Guidelines for Daycare. Despite the importance of these measures, they were not supported by investment in staff training and in promoting the quality of these settings. Considering that research points to a positive association between the initial and ongoing training of early childhood education professionals and the quality of their teaching practice, this article presents instigating tensions arising from the multiple transformations in course

This dissertation explores the role of Forest School pedagogy in promoting inclusion in preschool education, through a case study in an institution based on this educational approach. The research aims to understand how Forest School pedagogy can contribute to the promotion of inclusive practices in preschool education. The methodology adopted was qualitative in nature, including the application of a semi-structured interview survey to educators (mentors), an observation grid of inclusive practices and free observation records carried out in several visits to the educational context studied. Data analysis allowed the identification of child-centered practices, such as respect for individual rhythm, encouragement of active participation and the creation of an inclusive and enriching educational environment. The results demonstrate that the Forest School approach fosters the development of social, cognitive and emotional skills, through practical experiences and interaction with the natural environment. It was found that this methodology promotes autonomy, creativity and respect for diversity, creating a space where all children feel valued and included. It is concluded that the Forest School pedagogy represents a valuable pedagogical alternative for pre-school education in Portugal, in line with the principles of the Curricular Guidelines for Pre-School Education. This educational model stands out for its ability to fully integrate children and for providing an environment where play and contact with nature play a central role in the teaching and learning process

In Mediterranean farming systems, the semi-arid conditions and agricultural ecosystems have made site-specific management an important approach. This method aims to understand and handle the variability of soil properties and crop management, particularly through the utilization of geospatial information and accessible technology. Over three years in a 30 ha experimental field located in the Alentejo region (Portugal), crop establishment was monitored using data from soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), remote sensing (Sentinel-2), and in situ soil sampling. The procedure began with Step 1, involving the acquisition of soil spatial information and spatial interpolation. Subsequently, in Step 2, management zones (MZs) for soil characteristics were delineated using a combination of ECa measurements and soil analysis, and Step 3 spanned over three years of gathering meteorological data and crop remote sensing measurements. In Step 4, site-specific crop MZs were delineated by vegetation indexes (VIs). This article aims to increase the importance of in situ and remote assessments to more accurately identify areas with different productive potential. Results showed three MZs based on the percentage of sand, ECa, altimetry, exchangeable calcium, and exchangeable calcium properties, validated by crop VIs (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Red-Edge Index (NDRE), and Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI)) over time. Although there are many sensorial techniques available for site-specific management, this paper emphasizes a methodology for the farmer to identify different MZs combining remote and in situ evaluations, supporting new opportunities for a more rational use of natural resources. Based on soil parameters, three site-specific management areas could be selected. NDMI was the index that best explained the MZs created according to soil propertiesN/
