Mental health is now considered indispensable for well-being and general health. Self-esteem, in turn, is an important indicator of mental health. Knowing the self-esteem of people with Mental Illness thus becomes an important part of the process of help and recovery, promoting the implementation of appropriate therapeutic measures. This study aims to determine the impact of the INcluir workshops on participants’ self-esteem, an experimental study composed of adult participants of both genders. Two groups were created: the control group composed of participants who did not attend the artistic workshops and the experimental group who attended the workshops. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to measure the levels of self-esteem. Considering the results obtained, the artistic workshops produced improvements in the participants’ self-esteem.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis set out to determine the efficacy of whole-body muscle electrostimulation on body composition, strength, and muscle power in active and non-active adults (aged ≥18 years). Method: This review was reported in accordance with the Protocol Statement of Preferred Reporting Element Guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis included controlled trials; whole-body electromyostimulation trials with at least 1 exercise and control group; participants >18 years old. Outcome measures were defined as standardized mean differences for muscle mass, body fat mass, strength, and power. Studies were searched in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and EMBASE for all articles published up to July 30, 2021. The risk of bias was assessed by 2 independent researchers using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations approach. Analyses were performed using the metafor package of the statistical software R (version 4.0.3; R Core Team, 2020). Random effects models, forest, and funnel plots to quantify the asymmetry associated with publication bias were fitted using the metafor library in R. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using I 2 statistics. Results: In total, 26 studies representing 1183 participants were included (WB-electromyostimulation: n = 586 and control group: n = 597). The mean age of the participants ranged from a minimum of 20.4 to a maximum of 77.4 years old. Interventions lasted a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 54 weeks. Standardized mean difference was 0.36 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.16–0.57) for muscle mass, −0.38 (95% CI: −0.62–0.15) for body fat, 0.54 (95% CI: 0.35–0.72) for strength, and 0.36 (95% CI: 0.02–0.71) for power with significant differences between groups (all P < .04). I 2 revealed low heterogeneity of muscle mass (15%) and power (0%) between trials and medium heterogeneity of body fat (45%) and strength (55%). Conclusion: We concluded that WB-electromyostimulation has significant positive effects on muscle mass, body fat, strength, and power.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Training wheels are commonly used to learn how to ride a bike, but literature suggests they are counterproductive. In this study, we implemented the Learning to Cycle program to: i) promoting cycling acquisition, and ii) investigating and comparing the use of balance bikes (BE) and training wheels (BRL) during this acquisition process. Fifty-one children (M=5.82±0.94 years) from preschool and primary school, who did not previously know how to cycle, participated in the study. Children were divided into 2 groups, one group explored the BE and the other the BRL during 6 sessions, followed by 4 more sessions with a conventional bicycle (BC). The number of sessions with CB that each child needed to acquire each cycle milestone and the independent cycling was recorded. Independent cycling assessment was considered as the ability to sequentially and unassisted perform the following cycle milestones: starting, balancing, and stopping. The BB’s acquired the starting, balancing and braking milestones, as well as independent cycling, significantly faster. The program had 88.24% success for independent cycle acquisition, 100% in BE and 76.92% in BRL. These findings suggest that cycle acquisition can be successfully introduced from preschool age, and balance bikes are more efficient for learning than training wheels.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

During the development process, the nervous system is constantly changing (1). The application of non-linear measures such as entropy has allowed a deeper analysis of motor control (3). The Finger Tapping Test (FTT) is usually used to assess fine motor skills, and in this study we intend to use this test to analyze entropy levels and assess the development of fine motor control in children. Sixty children (M=8.141±1.064) participated in this study. Participants performed the FTT, 6 trials tapping with the index finger on a surface as fast as possible for ten seconds per trial. The test started with the preferred hand, followed by the non-preferred one. An inertial sensor was used to collect three-dimensional angular velocity. The entropy results indicated a change that occurs between the ages of 7 and 8 years old. It was observed that 6-years-old children, compared to other age groups, had lower entropy values, suggesting that they were more predictable when performing the FTT. The 8-years-old children seemed to have the highest entropy values, which might indicate that these children were less predictable (4). These findings suggest a transition to the third childhood, where significant changes occur in the nervous system during development. Entropy appears to be highly sensitive to these changes.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of health. A slow breath can propitiate its increase. We went to see whether 7- and 8-year-old children could perform predominantly diaphragmatic breathing, and what is its acute effect on HRV parameters. There was a significant reduction in respiratory rate and an increase in HRV. The children were able to perform this yogic breathing technique, with acute positive effects on their cardiac system.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Perception and motor competence in self-controlled practice in performing the forward roll on the beam at different levels of motor difficulty by formation level practitioners

The beam is a female sports device, although with a male gymnastic origin, which imposes specific physical constraints. We went to verify whether children practicing sports artistic gymnastics (N=35; 9.2±1.7 years; experience- 3.7±1.6 years; 7 boys) coincided in the choice and effective ability to carry out the front roll on the beam, before different task difficulty levels. The boys revealed an incorrect perception of their motor execution capacity and did not have any success, even at the simplest level, which in relation to rolling forward on the ground only had the visual limitation of the width of the band where to perform it, but which would imply greater linearity in the execution and use of a smaller support base for hands and feet; it is not known whether it was for performative reasons, that is, due to the difference between genders in sports artistic gymnastics equipment. Both girls and boys, whatever the age group, have a misperception of their real performance capacity. Probably, self-regulated learning should be based on the effective exploration of different levels of difficulty and not on the perception of personal motor competence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Conceptions of portuguese prospective teachers about real-life evolution situations

    Get PDF
The importance of introducing evolution in primary schools has been highlighted in evolution education research, but few studies have approached the understanding of evolution of prospective teachers who are being prepared to teach at primary school level. The present exploratory study aims to answer three research questions about the ability of Portuguese prospective teachers to apply evolution to two real-life situations: 1) Are prospective teachers able to identify evolution misconceptions in online newspaper articles? 2) What misconceptions are expressed by prospective teachers when explaining real-life evolution situations? and 3) Which key evolution concepts do prospective teachers apply to make sense of real-life evolution situations? Twelve prospective teachers participated in the study. In the first situation, the prospective teachers were asked to identify statements from a newspaper article that would reveal evolution misconceptions and justify their choices. In the second situation, they were asked to read a text about SARS-CoV-2 and explain why scientists were worried about uncontrolled outbreaks of the virus. The prospective teachers’ answers were analysed through content analysis. Regarding the first research question, our results show that only half of the prospective teachers were able to identify teleological misconceptions in the newspaper article. Concerning the second research question, some of the prospective teachers either identified misconceptions in information in which there was no misconception, or revealed their own misconceptions in their explanations. Regarding the third research question, although more than half of the prospective teachers identified at least two key evolution concepts, some of them found it difficult to explain how evolution is related to the situation described. Although this is an exploratory study, it shows which key concepts of evolution the prospective teachers mobilised and identifies their misunderstandings, thus highlighting dimensions that should be addressed in their evolution education.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Pregnancy is a highly challenging process for the couple, subject to various individual and joint transition processes, particularly in terms of their sexuality. The intervention of the Maternal and Obstetric Health Nurse Specialist should accompany individuals at all stages of the pre- and post-partum period, empowering women/couples to make decisions about their health, promoting satisfactory sexuality throughout pregnancy and particularly in the post-partum period. Therefore, a scoping review was carried out with the aim of mapping the available evidence on interventions by Maternal and Obstetric Health Nurse Specialists to promote satisfactory sexuality in the postpartum period. The results show us that the healthcare professionals recognize that the sexuality continues to be undervalue in the practice, aknowledging the lack of information and ease to approach this theme with the couples, although this should be included in the appointment. This report analyses nursing care in the light of the Transitions Theory developed by Afaf Meleis. A critical analysis was made of the activities carried out during the internship in the labour ward.N/
