    No full text
This study investigates the main factors associated with the disclosure of information on modern slavery by companies listed on Euronext Lisbon, covering the period from 2013 to 2022. Content analysis of annual reports and data from the Refinitiv Eikon database were employed. The findings indicate that company size and audits conducted by Big Four firms are positively associated with disclosure on the subject. In contrast, profitability and industry sector show no significant relationship with this practice. I tis also noted that the information disclosed remains limited, despite efforts by the European Union and Portugal to encourage greater transparency. As the study is based on the Portuguese context, the findings may not be generalisable to other cultural or regional settings. The research contributes to the ongoing debate on corporate transparency and, in practical terms, highlights the urgency of stronger regulatory measures and greater corporate commitment to tackling modern slavery

    No full text
This study aimed to compare high-speed running (HSR) and sprint distances (SD) when in- (IP) and out-of-possession (OP) during official English Premier League (EPL) match-play over three consecutive seasons considering playing position, match location and opponent ranking. Match data from 31 male professional soccer players was obtained via an optical tracking system. Results showed that during the IP phase, playing position emerged as the only significant predictor for both HSRIP and SDIP. Wingers showed the highest HSRIP compared to centre-backs who exhibited the lowest values (p < 0.001, ES = 4.19). Similar data were found for SDIP (p < 0.001, ES = 3.30). HSROP was significantly affected by both ranking difference (β = -0.039, p = 0.001) and match location (β = 0.369, p = 0.001). HSROP decreases as the ranking difference increases and tends to be higher during away matches (p = 0.001, ES = 0.24). SDOP was affected by both ranking difference (β = -0.023, p = 0.001) and match location (β = 0.166, p = 0.001) and decreased as the ranking difference increased. SDOP was also higher during away matches (p = 0.001, ES = 0.23). Additionally, a significant interaction was found between playing position and ranking difference (β = 0.005, p = 0.010). Lower ranking differences correspond to higher SDOP values. In conclusion, these findings highlight that by applying these IP and OP insights into practical coaching strategies, teams can potentially enhance individual physical performance and adaptability across different match situations and seasons

    No full text
Social cognitive career theory posits that career interests and decisions are influenced by individual, contextual, and behavioural factors. This research aims to assess the impact of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities on students’ interest and aspirations in STEM careers. Additionally, the study aims to explore the critical factors that might shape students’ STEM career aspirations. The research used a quantitative approach, with pre- and post-test measures for a cohort of 191 Portuguese secondary school students, using the Career Interest Questionnaire (CIQ). The results showed that STEM activities increased the intentions of non-STEM students to pursue educational opportunities that could potentially lead to a scientific career. Males, in contrast to females, showed a significant increase in their intentions to pursue educational opportunities that could eventually lead to a scientific career. Furthermore, gender along with the personal goals and positive perceptions of STEM careers were identified as significant predictors of the students’ STEM career aspirations. These results highlight the critical role of STEM education in developing and sustaining students’ interest in STEM careers. Integrated STEM activities should be developed in the early stages of education to enhance students’ confidence in STEM and mitigate the gender gap.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Methods of protein extraction from house crickets (Acheta domesticus) for food purposes

    No full text
Global population is projected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, emphasizing the need for increased food production. Edible insects, such as house crickets (Acheta domesticus), emerged as promising due to higher nutritional value and efficient feed conversion rates compared to conventional protein sources. Incorporating insect powders into new food products can improve consumer acceptance but often leads to poor technological food processing functionality and/or undesirable organoleptic characteristics. Protein isolates have proven to be effective in enhancing this functionality and consumer acceptance, but existent protein extraction methods still lack improvements concerning the optimization of protein extraction rates. This study aimed to address this gap by developing and comparing the yield of three different protein extraction methods using sodium hydroxide, ascorbic acid or alcalase from house crickets (Acheta domesticus) for food applications. Protein extraction was performed on cricket powder with a mean protein content of 46.35 g/100 g, and the results were evaluated. The enzymatic method shows the highest protein extraction rate at 69.91% with a mean protein content of 60.19 g/100 g, while extraction with NaOH or ascorbic acid resulted in rates of 60.44 and 46.34%, respectively. Further studies on technological food processing functionality and sensorial evaluation of products developed with this protein extract are recommended

Nutritional and microbial quality of edible insect powder from plant-based industrial by-product and fish biowaste diets

    No full text
Edible insect powder, particularly from the cricket Acheta domesticus L., is a promising sustainable alternative to traditional livestock-derived protein. Insects provide high protein content, fibre, and essential minerals, making them suitable for food applications. This study investigates the viability of alternative diets for rearing A. domesticus. Two experimental diets were tested: RI [50% horticultural by-products (HP) + 50% commercial diet (CD)] and RII (33% HP + 33% CD + 33% fish by-products). The results demonstrated that both diets were suitable for cricket rearing. Crickets reared on diets RI and RII produced, respectively, insect powders FI and FII, which were evaluated for their nutritional, bioactive, and microbiological attributes. Both powders exhibited high protein content (≈60%), all essential amino acids, higher mineral content than traditional protein sources, and met European Union food safety standards. Diet composition influenced powder characteristics: FI showed higher antioxidant activity and saturated fat content, while FII contained more protein, ash, minerals, and monounsaturated fatty acids. These findings underscore the potential of using industrial by-products to promote a circulareconomy in insect farming and suggest pathways for further research. However, since insects can bioaccumulate toxic elements, such as Hg, from diets, caution should be taken when considering fish by-product

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Correct supervision during the performance of resis tance exercises is imperative to the correct execution of these exercises. This study presents a proposal for the use of Morisita–Horn similarity indices in modelling with machine learning methods to identify changes in positional sequence patterns during the biceps-curl weight-lifting exercise with a barbell. The models used are based on the fuzzy logic (FL) and support vector machine (SVM) methods. Methods: Ten male volunteers (age: 26 ±4.9 years, height: 177 ± 8.0cm, bodyweight: 86 ± 16kg)performedastandingbarbell bicep curl with additional weights. A smartphone was used to record their movements in the sagittal plane, providing information about joint positions and changes in the se quential position of the bar during each lifting attempt. Maximum absolute deviations of movement amplitudes were calculated for each execution. Results: A variance analysis revealed significant deviations (p < 0.002) in vertical displacement between the standard execution and execution with a load of 50% of the subject’s body weight. Experts with over thirty years of experience in resistance-exercise evaluation evaluated the exercises, and their results showed an agreement of over 70% with the results of the ANOVA. The similarity indices, absolute deviations, and expert evaluations were used for modelling in both the FL system and the SVM. The root mean square error and R-squared results for the FL system (R2 = 0.92, r = 0.96) were superior to those of the SVM (R2 = 0.81, r = 0.79). Conclusions: The use of FL in modelling emerges as a promising approach with which to support the assessment of movement patterns. Its applications range from automated detection of errors in exercise execution to enhancing motor performance in athletes
