Differential Effects of Verbal Coaching Cues and Analogies on Sprint Performance in Youth Male Soccer Players Across Grass and Indoor Surfaces
There is a limited body of research concerning the impact of different attentional foci on the
performance or retention of fundamental motor skills in young individuals. Additionally, the
influence of verbal cues on sprint performance across various surfaces, such as grass and
indoor basketball courts, remains understudied. Therefore, the primary objective of this study
was to assess the effectiveness of Internal Cues (IC), External Cues (EC), and analogies with a
directional component (ADC) on sprint performance among youth soccer players on different
surfaces (grass vs. indoor basketball court). Seventy participants, aged 12.3±0.5 years, with a
maturity offset of -0.9±0.5 years, were recruited for this investigation. Multiple 20-meter sprint
tests were conducted on both grass and indoor basketball courts using different coaching cues:
a control/neutral cue, an internal cue, an external cue, and analogies (away and toward). The
analyses did not reveal significant differences (p ≥ 0.05) between cue types for both sprinting
on grass and indoor surfaces. However, in post-hoc analyses for indoor sprints, significant
distinctions were noted between ECs and ICs, favoring ECs (p < 0.01), as well as between
"away" ADC and IC, favoring the "away" ADC (p < 0.01). Similar significant differences were
observed for grass sprints, with ECs and "away" ADCs showing superiority over ICs (p < 0.01).

In conclusion, the study did not find evidence supporting specific instructional types' positive
impact on youth's sprint performance on both grass and indoor surfaces. Notwithstanding,
ECs and ADCs seemed to be more effective coaching strategies for improving sprinting
performance in youth soccer players. Additionally, motivating young soccer players to give
their maximum effort seemed to be a beneficial cueing method for enhancing sprint ability on
different surfaces.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Clinical Analysis Laboratories (LAC) play a crucial role in the portuguese healthcare system. They provide diagnostic services and contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases. However, in recent years LAC have faced several challenges: 1) increased competition, 2) pressure to reduce costs and
improve efficiency, 3) regulatory changes in value-based healthcare. LACs have been exploring new business models to create value and ensure their long-term viability. This study aims to analyse the business models applied by LACs in Portugal and assess their effectiveness in creating value for organizations. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was carried out to identify the different business models.
Subsequently, a qualitative analysis of the business models was carried out on the basis of public information made available by four different laboratories in Portugal. This analysis was supported by data taken from four questionnaires sent to employees in management positions at the LACs under study.
The results of this study focus on the different business models adapted by LACs in Portugal and provide an insight into their effectiveness in creating value. As the research progressed, it became clear that the information found was directly related to the innovation strategies studied. In this way, it was possible to present the evident similarities between the cases and understanding which areas the LACs are strongly
committed to. This revealed two areas of greater investment, based on the co-creation of user needs and also in the area of innovation in laboratory technology, with the main objective of creating value. In this way it is possible, through analysis from a management point of view, to assess the area that allows the organization to increase its results and to focus on the areas in deficit.
This research contributes to the existing literature on business models in the health sector.N/
praticantes relatando maior interação social e menos isolamento (MacRae
promovendo autonomia, prevenindo o declínio funcional e aumentando a
Walking football, created in 2011 in England, combines the benefits
of moderate physical activity with social and cognitive aspects, and is
especially attractive to older people. Studies indicate that regular participants
show a significant improvement in cardiovascular capacity, with a 15 per cent
reduction in resting heart rate after 12 weeks of practice (Arnold et al., 2015).
There was also a 20% increase in muscle strength in the lower limbs and a
reduction in fat mass by an average of 3kg. In social terms, the sport
promoted inclusion, with 86 per cent of practitioners reporting greater social
interaction and less isolation (MacRae et al., 2020). From a mental point of
view, there were reductions in stress levels and improvements of up to 30
per cent in well-being scales were observed (Taylor and Pringle, 2021). In
addition, other studies highlight how this modality serves as an inclusive and
low-impact tool, promoting autonomy, preventing functional decline and
increasing overall quality of life. This article revisits some of the studies that
show the positive impact of this sport on the physical, mental and social
health of older practitioners.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Influence of Playing Position on Physical, Physiological, and Technical Demands in Adult Male Soccer Matches: A Systematic Scoping Review with Evidence Gap Map
Background There has been an increase in studies examining the demands of soccer relative to each playing position in recent
years. Understanding the physical, physiological, and technical demands on soccer players according to their positional role
during competitive matches is necessary to understand match requirements and develop position-specifc training practices.
Thereby, there is a clear need to synthesize the information on the diferent profles of each playing position.
Objective This review aimed to organize the literature investigating physical, physiological, and technical demands accord ing to playing positions and provide a framework to identify gaps and suggestions for future studies.
Methods A systematic search was conducted in October 2023 using four electronic databases: Web of Science, SPORT Discus, PubMed and Scopus. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR extension for Scoping
Reviews. The studies were included if the sample comprised adult male soccer players categorized from Tier 3 to Tier 5 (i.e.,
highly trained/national level, elite/international level, or world class) and compared the physical, physiological, or technical
parameters across playing positions.
Results A total of 178 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The number of teams, players,
and matches analyzed per study varied considerably. Although a range of classifcations were reported across studies, 59%
of studies classifed players as central defenders, full-backs, central midfelders, wide midfelders, and forwards. The fnd ings suggests that central and external midfelders, and external defenders cover greater total and high-speed distance than
forwards or central defenders. Sprint distance was higher in external midfelders versus all other positions. Defenders and
central midfelders perform more passes than external midfelders and forwards. Heart rate was the most commonly reported
physiological variable across playing positions. When expressed as a percentage of maximal heart rate, midfelders presented
higher mean values than all other playing positions.
Conclusion This scoping review demonstrates that there are diferences in the demands on players across playing positions
in soccer. Training practices in soccer should be based on the specifc requirements of each positional role to ensure players
can fulfll their tactical responsibilities during the game.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Fluctuations in Mediterranean Diet adherence pre- and post-pandemic : a study of portuguese cohorts 2019–2024
Background/Objectives: The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is a lifestyle offering numerous health benefits. Nevertheless, the adherence to the MD is moderate even in Mediterranean countries. While sociodemographic factors influence MD adherence, additional impacts occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional longitudinal study with three cohorts of Portuguese adults analyzes MD adherence before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and explores the effect of sociodemographic variables. Methods: Sociodemographic factors, lifestyle habits, and MD adherence were assessed in the years 2019, 2021, and 2024 with an online self-filled questionnaire. MD adherence was measured with the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS).
Results: MEDAS score increased significantly (p < 0.05) from 2019 to 2021 (6.2 ± 0.7 to 7.7 ± 0.1), followed by a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in 2024 (7.2 ± 0.1) relative to 2019, which was more pronounced in participants with higher income.
The current paper intended to demonstrate in a substantiated way, the importance of a
calibrated and efficient functioning irrigation system, in this case a circular ramp, in a water
scarcity scenario.
An attempt was made to monitor the water comfort of the plants throughout the entire
cultural cycle and simultaneously assess, through the study of the various parameters, the
possibility that more water than strictly necessary was being supplied through the irrigation
cycles.
It was intended to show that maintaining the water comfort of the crop with water available
in the soil above the Permissible Management Deficit, therefore within the Easily Usable
Reserve, it would be possible to reduce the supply provided and consequently the expenses
in the crop account.N/
No tocante à
As consequências desta
rega excessiva.Food production and water use are closely related, which makes water use the main
factor limiting agricultural production in vast areas of the globe (FAO, 2012). The
agricultural sector is the largest consumer of freshwater, both globally and nationally
(Selborne, 2002), and, according to the PNA, is responsible for around 75% of the
consumption of this resource in Portugal.
Currently, we are seeing an increase in the air temperature in all seasons of the year,
accompanied by longer lasting heat waves. With regard to precipitation, there is a
decrease in annual precipitation, sometimes accompanied by extreme precipitation
phenomena in the autumn/winter and longer lasting droughts in the spring/summer. It is
therefore expected, by the IPMA, that in the future there will be an increase in
temperature and a decrease in precipitation. The consequences of this climate change
are already being seen at a national level, where there is already a shortage of water in
the spring/summer months, when it is most needed for agriculture (Pires, 2022).
Considering this scenario, it is understood that it is necessary to optimize the application
of water in agriculture, focusing on improving irrigation opportunities and application
efficiency. There is a growing need to reduce water losses in order to protect natural
water resources and, consequently, the environment (DGDR, 2014).
The objective of this paper is to create an audit script for the efficiency of an irrigation
system, using a pivot. To analyze its functionality, an evaluation of a pivot irrigation
system was carried out in parallel and the results obtained were compared with the
respective irrigation chart.
Despite only being able to access a small data pool, these results were sufficient to reach
conclusions about the efficiency of water application in the irrigation that were carried
out. Due to the lack of data, it was not possible to quantify the costs of applying excess
water in irrigation, essentially energy costs, nor the size of the ecological footprint of the
crop, although it was found that there was excessive watering.N/
Integrating field-based tests into weekly soccer training sessions: a comparison of physiological demands of three progressive multistage fitness tests and regular training demands
Purpose. This study compares the physiological demands of 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15IFT), Yo-Yo Intermittent
Recovery Test level 1 (YYIRT), and VAMEVAL test as related to training and match demands among youth soccer players.
Methods. Overall, 12 under-19 male soccer players (18.21 ± 0.34 years old) were monitored over 3 consecutive weeks for heart
rate (HR) responses during training sessions and matches. During this period, they were assessed with 30-15IFT, YYIRT,
and VAMEVAL. The measures were taken on the same day of the week to ensure replicable conditions between the tests.
Results. The Friedman test revealed significant differences in the average HR (p = 0.006), time in HR zone 3 (p < 0.001), and
time in HR zone 4 (p = 0.039) between the tests. Considering the representativeness of the tests in comparison with training
sessions and matches, both 30-15IFT and VAMEVAL corresponded to 48% and 46% of the training session load 3 days
before the match day (936 ± 447 s) and on the match day (831 ± 533 s), respectively.
Conclusions. YYIRT imposed greater time exposure to high HR intensities (in the zones of 80–100% of HR maximum)
than VAMEVAL and 30-15IFT. Moreover, the multistage fitness tests corresponded to slightly more than half of the time
in which a player was exposed to 80% and 100% of HR maximum during a regular training session and match day. These
findings may assist coaches in understanding how to incorporate intermittent fitness tests within training in order to
accurately replicate HR responses of match conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The quality of life of former portuguese football players
Background: The demands of playing professional football can have an impact on an individual’s quality of life (QoL), which may remain into retirement. Given limited evidence exists regarding the QoL in former football players, this study aimed to assess QoL among Portuguese former players according to career duration, career end period, competitive level, tactical-positional status, international status, academic qualifications, serious injuries in career, and current professional football connection. Methods: The study included 84 Portuguese former football players (48.8 ± 8.2 years old) who transitioned to retirement between 1988 and 2018. The WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was used to assess QoL perceptions, and the Portuguese version was validated. Results and Discussion: The former players have positive QoL indicators, both in general and across the four domains, namely in terms of the physical, psychological, and social relationship and environment. There were no statistically significant differences in QoL between the defined categories for career end period, competitive level, tactical-positional status, international status, and current professional football connection. Likewise, there was no significant correlation between QoL and career duration. In contrast, there were significant differences in general QoL (p < 0.023) and in the physical domain (p < 0.001) between former players with different academic qualifications. A significant correlation was found between the number of severe injuries sustained in a career and QoL in the physical domain (R = −0.300, p = 0.006). Conclusions: There are no concerning QoL results presented by former players. However, the number of severe injuries sustained during the career was associated with a lower QoL, while holding higher academic qualifications demonstrated higher general and physical QoL. Studies with larger samples should be conducted to confirm these trends
