Sequencing effects of small-sided games and high-intensity interval training on physical and physiological performance of young soccer players during pre-season
Study aim: This experimental study investigated the sequencing effects of a small-sided games (SSG) protocol and high
intensity interval training (HIIT) on the physical and physiological performance adaptation of soccer players, conducted over
a fourteen-week of the pre-season.
Materials and methods: Twenty-three young (aged 14 ±0.1 years) male soccer players from a club participating in national
level competitions were randomly divided into two groups (SSG + HIIT, n = 11 and HIIT + SSG, n = 12). The first group
completed SSGs (5 vs. 5 + goalkeeper, 36 × 30 m) followed by HIIT (long interval at 60 to 75% of final velocity during 30–15
intermittent fitness test) training, while the second group performed HIIT training and then SSGs. Assessments were conducted
at baseline and post-intervention for 10 m linear sprint, body fat percentage, countermovement jump (CMJ), change of direc
tion speed (CODS), squat jump (SJ), and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test (Yo-Yo IR).
Results: A significant main effect of time was reported for 10 m linear sprint, CMJ, CODS, SJ, and Yo-Yo IR (p ≤ 0.001–0.010,
ηp 2 = 0.32–0.74). However, no significant group × time interaction were reported for any dependent variables (p = 0.433–1.000,
ηp 2 ≤ 0.01–0.03).
Conclusion: The sequencing order of HIIT and SSG does not affect the performance outcomes in young male soccer players.
Moreover, similar improvements can be expected in the 10 m linear sprint, CMJ, CODS, SJ, and Yo-Yo IR, irrespective of
the exercise order. However, caution should be taken when interpreting the within-group improvements, as the study did not
include a control group
Comparisons of running and accelerometry based measures between playing positions in touch rugby. A case study of an amateur male team
Background: The main objective of the present study was to quantify the external load
of the games that belong to a national tournament by comparing playing positions. A
secondary objective consisted in comparing the match-to-match variations. Methods:
Fourteen players (four links, four middles and six wings) were included (age: 39.36
±5.83 years; body mass index: 26.65 ± 4.13). Participants were monitored during a
tournament. ThroughGpexepro2, thefollowingmeasureswerecollectedandrelativized
per minute: total distance, forward distance, backward distance, zone 1 (0–1.50 m/s),
zone 2 (1.50–3.00 m/s), zone 3 (3.00–4.00 m/s), zone 4 (4.00–5.50 m/s), zone 5 (5.50
7.00 m/s)andzone6(>7.00m/s),thenumberofaccelerationsanddecelerations, impacts
and jumps. The absolute values of maximal speed, maximal acceleration speed and
maximal deceleration speed were also used for analysis. Results: The main findings
showed meaningful higher values of zone 4 (16.18 ± 1.89 vs. 5.56 ± 3.53), zone 5 (2.91
± 0.81 vs. 0.38 ± 0.38), zone 6 (0.35 ± 0.24 vs. 0.00 ± 0.00), deceleration (0.56 ±
0.21 vs. 0.19 ± 0.12), maximal speed (23.56 ± 1.90 vs. 18.84 ± 1.24) and forward
distance (102.20 ± 13.45 vs. 67.42 ± 17.40) for middles than wings (p < 0.05), with
large to very large effect sizes. In addition, no differences were found when comparing
external load data from all matches. Conclusions: The findings of this study showed
a clear tendency of higher values for middles than links and wings which provides a
deeper understanding of the positional activity profile of an Amateur Portuguese team
allowing practitioners to adjust training with the common external load experienced
in a tournament. Moreover, the analysis of match-to-match comparison revealed no
differences through the competition day, which means a proper fatigue management

Does running performance relate to the market value of elite male soccer players? A case study from the FIFA world cup
The study main aim was to investigate: the relationship between running performances and market values of
soccer players playing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, by playing position and all players; the comparisons by playing
position; to analyse the relationship between running metrics and market values of the highest and lowest players
ranked players. The relationship between running metrics and market values of 306 soccer players who participated
in the tournament and played full time, as well as the 40 players with the highest (n = 20) and lowest (n = 20)
market values was analysed. Overall, there was a very weak correlation between market values and total distance
(r = 0.149), zone 3 (r = 0.153), zone 4 (r = 0.139), zone 5 (r = 0.160), high-speed runs (r = 0.132), sprints (r = 0.147), and
top speed (r = 0.194) for all players (p < 0.05). Defenders showed very weak positive correlation between market
values and top speed (r = 0.155, p < 0.05). Midfielders showed weak positive correlations between market values
and zone 4 (r = 0.302, p < 0.05) and zone 5 (r = 0.369, p < 0.001), sprints (r = 0.367, p < 0.001), and top speed (r = 0.304,
p 0.05). While there is no significant correlation between running
metrics and market value for players with the lowest market value (p > 0.05), there was a moderate negative
correlation between total distance (r=-0.577) and zone 2 (r=-0.612) for the 20 players with the highest market
value (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a weak correlation with zone 5 (r = 0.450) and a moderate correlation with the
top speed values (r = 0.596) (p < 0.05). Weak correlations between soccer players’ running performance and market
values suggest that different running thresholds are important metrics, although other factors (e.g., technical skill,
age, national and team club) may influence this relationship. In conclusion, since coaches and scouts aim to recruit
relatively talented players within the limits of their budgets, selecting athletes with high aerobic and anaerobic
performance, particularly those with a strong high-intensity running profile, can contribute to team success and
potentially generate high transfer revenues in the future
This report describes the internship completed as part of the Master's Degree in Sports Training – Specialization in Football, developed at Associação Académica de Santarém. The internship consisted of assistant coach and analyst for the U-15 team (1st National Division of Under-15s) and head coach for the U-9 team (Kids). The internship's main objectives were to apply theoretical and practical knowledge, develop technical and professional skills, and conduct scientific research. The practical component of the internship allowed for full integration into the dynamics of training and competitions, with responsibilities that included planning, implementing, and analyzing training, preparing match reports, observing opponents, and applying training principles adapted to different age groups. In parallel, a study was conducted focusing on the influence of the number and positioning of goals in Conditioned Small-Sized Games (SCGs), aiming to understand how these elements influence players' technical-tactical actions. Results also included comparisons between two distinct groups (most and least used). The results revealed that fewer goals encourage a greater number of dribbles, while more goals favor a greater frequency of progressive passes. A quantitative superiority of group 1 over group 2 was also observed in most of the various pass types. The conclusion is that goal manipulation influences players' technical-tactical behavior, highlighting the importance of SCG design in sports development. The report also addresses the main challenges, lessons learned, and reflections on the journey developed throughout the season

The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of gender diversity in management bodies on the performance of EPE hospital centers from the National Health Service. The research results indicate that the presence of women in the management bodies of EPE hospital centers does not significantly impact their performance. Additionally, it is noted that the size of the Board of Directors, the Supervisory Board, and the EPE hospital centers positively and significantly affects the performance of these
organizations. The scarcity of studies on the impact of gender diversity on the performance of EPE Hospital Centers highlights the significant contribution of this study to research
Observação e análise no futebol - O planeamento do microciclo do treinador analista
The first part concerns the realization of the internship, evaluating its context, defining
objectives for the intern, presenting contents and strategies for professional intervention,
evaluating the control of the internship process, taking stock of the intern’s tasks, thus
reflecting on his internship process. These tasks included filming the team’s games and
training sessions, coding the games relating to the opponents, by the elaboration of video
compacts in relation to the opposing team, by the individual and collective analysis of
the opposing team and by the statistical analysis of the offensive and defensive tactical
schemes, the shooting opportunities achieved and conceded, and the goals scored and
conceded. In addition to this, also the task of assisting in the training process. All these
tasks allowed for personal and professional development in an elite context, especially
in game observation and analysis. The second part provides a framework for the
research study carried out during the internship. In the process of investigating these
studies, the aim was to establish contacts with analyst coaches, with the aim of analyzing
the different moments of observation ana analysis of the football match (focusing mainly
on the “before” moment, that is, the planning of the analyst coach’s microcycle), and
understanding how this analysis influences the weekly microcycle of match preparation.
The results showed that, in all the dimension covered throughout the study, the area of
observation and analysis in seen as important in all these three contexts (1st League, 2nd
League and 3rd League). However, it was possible to conclude that for some parameters,
there are not the same procedures, depending on what is wanted for a particular player,
team, among others, and even form some types of more secondary analysis, although
they are considered important, the lack of human resources in some clubs means that
certain analyses are not carried out as often, or are carried out in a more general way
and as in-depth ad intended
Effects of a 16‑week high‑speed resistance training program on physical and cognitive function in community‑dwelling independent older adults: a clinical trial
Purpose This study investigated the effects of a 16-week high-speed resistance training (HSRT) program on physical and
cognitive function in independent older adults.
Methods Seventy-nine participants were assigned to an intervention group (IG, N= 40, 68.50 ± 3.54 years) or a control
group (CG, N = 39, 72.08 ± 5.89 years). The IG completed 60–70 min of supervised HSRT three times weekly for 16 weeks.
All concentric actions were continuously monitored with a BEAST™ sensor. Physical function was evaluated by five tests:
chair‐stand, timed up and go (TUG), seated medicine ball throw (SMBT), six-minute walk (6MWT), and handgrip strength.
General cognitive function was assessed with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE).
Results The intervention could induce significant improvements in favor of the IG (p < 0.001) for chair-stand ( 2 p = 0.736), TUG test ( 2
p = 0.635), SMBT ( 2 p = 0.331), 6MWT ( 2 p = 0.386), and handgrip strength test for dominant ( 2 p = 0.448) and non-dominant side( 2
p = 0.388), as well as in general cognitive function (MMSE, p = 0.001, 2 p = 0.146).
Conclusions The 16-week HSRT program led to substantial enhancements in both physical and cognitive function. Inter
estingly, the HSRT program, tailored to general velocity zones, proved to be a safe and motivational approach to physical
exercise within this population
Positional training demands in the English Premier League and EnglishChampionship. A longitudinal study across consecutive seasons
The aims of this study were to: compare training loads between the English Premier League (EPL)
and English Championship League (ECL) and examine differences between playing positions. Forty-six 1st team
players from the same club participated in the study. GPS metrics were obtained during all EPL and ECL training
sessions across four consecutive seasons, 2019–20 to 2022–23. The study team was promoted from the ECL at
the end of season 2020–21. There was a significant interaction effect between position and league for all GPS
metrics (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.001–0.003), except for relative high-speed running (HSR) distance, sprint distance,
and sprint efforts (p > 0.05). A significant main effect for league for all GPS metrics (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.001–0.009)
was found, with EPL training sessions resulting in greater total distance per minute, HSR distance per minute, high
metabolic load distance (HMLD) per minute, number of HML efforts, accelerations, and decelerations per minute
compared to training in the ECL (p < 0.001; d = 0.061–0.224). For position, a significant main effect for all GPS
metrics (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.001–0.005) was observed. Centre midfielders covered more distance per minute than
all other positions (p < 0.001, d = 0.040–0.167). In conclusion, higher training values in the EPL were evident,
except for centre forwards, providing some guidance on the differing positional physical demands that may support
coaches and practitioners to design position-specific drills incorporating physical and technical/tactical strategiesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
