Optimizing Database Performance in Complex Event Processing through Indexing Strategies

    No full text
Complex event processing (CEP) systems have gained significant importance in various domains, such as finance, logistics, and security, where the real-time analysis of event streams is crucial. However, as the volume and complexity of event data continue to grow, optimizing the performance of CEP systems becomes a critical challenge. This paper investigates the impact of indexing strategies on the performance of databases handling complex event processing. We propose a novel indexing technique, called Hierarchical Temporal Indexing (HTI), specifically designed for the efficient processing of complex event queries. HTI leverages the temporal nature of event data and employs a multi-level indexing approach to optimize query execution. By combining temporal indexing with spatial- and attribute-based indexing, HTI aims to accelerate the retrieval and processing of relevant events, thereby improving overall query performance. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of HTI by implementing complex event queries on various CEP systems with different indexing strategies. We conduct a comprehensive performance analysis, measuring the query execution times and resource utilization (CPU, memory, etc.), and analyzing the execution plans and query optimization techniques employed by each system. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed HTI indexing strategy outperforms traditional indexing approaches, particularly for complex event queries involving temporal constraints and multi-dimensional event attributes. We provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each indexing strategy, identifying the factors that influence performance, such as data volume, query complexity, and event characteristics. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of our findings for the design and optimization of CEP systems, offering recommendations for indexing strategy selection based on the specific requirements and workload characteristics. Finally, we outline the potential limitations of our study and suggest future research directions in this domain

The broadening dependency and reliance that modern societies have on essential services provided by Critical Infrastructures is increasing the relevance of their trustworthiness. However, Critical Infrastructures are attractive targets for cyberattacks, due to the potential for considerable impact, not just at the economic level but also in terms of physical damage and even loss of human life. Complementing traditional security mechanisms, forensics and compliance audit processes play an important role in ensuring Critical Infrastructure trustworthiness. Compliance auditing contributes to checking if security measures are in place and compliant with standards and internal policies. Forensics assist the investigation of past security incidents. Since these two areas significantly overlap, in terms of data sources, tools and techniques, they can be merged into unified Forensics and Compliance Auditing (FCA) frameworks. In this paper, we survey the latest developments, methodologies, challenges, and solutions addressing forensics and compliance auditing in the scope of Critical Infrastructure Protection. This survey focuses on relevant contributions, capable of tackling the requirements imposed by massively distributed and complex Industrial Automation and Control Systems, in terms of handling large volumes of heterogeneous data (that can be noisy, ambiguous, and redundant) for analytic purposes, with adequate performance and reliability. The achieved results produced a taxonomy in the field of FCA whose key categories denote the relevant topics in the literature. Also, the collected knowledge resulted in the establishment of a reference FCA architecture, proposed as a generic template for a converged platform. These results are intended to guide future research on forensics and compliance auditing for Critical Infrastructure Protection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fruits and vegetables are recommended as low-calorie foods that contribute to the proper intake of necessary micronutrients, macronutrients, and bioactive compounds with health benefits. However, the recommendations for the dietary intake of these foods fail to be attained in most European countries. For this reason, promoting more knowledge about the health effects of fruits and vegetables is essential to decrease the incidence of chronic diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the knowledge of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables among the population of Portugal and France. The present work involved a questionnaire survey of 639 participants (257 from Portugal and 382 from France). The results revealed that most participants were young females (68.9%) with good education (76%) and an average weight range. They consumed a varied diet (57%) but had body dissatisfaction (63.2%). The respondents had good knowledge about the health effects of fruits and vegetables. However, the French population knew more about the theme than the Portuguese. Portuguese individuals were more likely to have incomplete information. Gender and education significantly influenced knowledge levels, with females and highly educated individuals demonstrating greater understanding. Dissatisfaction with body weight drives individuals to seek nutrition information. This investigation enhances our comprehension of the factors that affect knowledge of vegetable and fruit consumption among young adults in Portugal and France. Moreover, it highlights the importance of implementing focused educational programs to enhance nutrition literacy, particularly for less-aware demographic groups. Going forward, a more in-depth analysis of these factors could assist in creating more efficient strategies to encourage healthier dietary habits and improve nutrition literacy among these communities.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Slaves mobility in Brazil in the 18th century: aspects of tolerance in the catechization/integration process and religious consequences.

    Get PDF
The catechization in Brazil has been studied from the perspective of missionization, in particular the Jesuit action, with emphasis on the processes of catechization ofthe indigenous people, especially regarding the confrontation between cultures, adaptation of religious practices and miscegenation. However, the bishops also played a role in the process of Christianization of Brazil, in diocesan contexts, in the post-Tridentine period when, after the impulse ofthe Council of Trent, the indoctrination ofthe faithful gained relevance, and the prelates were committed to carrying it out in their respective dioceses (Feitler 157-173; Souza 175-195). InBrazil, due to the characteristics ofthe territory and a profound lack of doctrine, the episcopal power created a catechism especially addressed to the group of slaves. The purpose ofthe present essay is to observe this catechism, understand how it took shape and prove that, in terms of the catechesis of slaves, in order to more easily inculcate the faith, the bishops, influenced by the Jesuit practice, adapted processes and forms of indoctrination and tolerated deviations committed by slaves. By adapting doctrinal norms and considering cultural and linguistic elements of the slaves’ culture in catechetical contexts, they contributed to the existence of religious syncretism in Brazilinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Get PDF
Edible insects have been suggested as a potential environmental and economic solution to replace less sustainable conventional protein sources for human nutrition. Hence, this work investigated the perceptions and knowledge of consumers in fourteen different countries towards edible insects and their relation with environment and sustainability. For that, data were collected through a questionnaire survey in the ambit of the EISuFood Project, and 7221 responses were obtained. The results showed that although participants had some difficulty in identifying wrong statements, a majority were able to express disagreement towards them (ex. comparison between poultry and insect productions for water requirements, comparison between pork and insect productions for area requirements). A great majority of respondents showed agreement with true statements, like insect production emits fewer greenhouse gases than beef production. Higher percentages of respondents that did not manifest a decisive opinion were found for insects being able to efficiently convert organic matter into protein, or for loss of biodiversity being lower for insect compared to other animal productions. Sociodemographic variables sex and education were significantly influenced knowledge on most of the questions, while age was not found so influential. Regarding the geographic variable living environment, it significantly influenced the knowledge on practically all items, and country significantly influenced knowledge in all of the questions, being the most influential of all variables studied. As a conclusion, it was fund that perception about edible insects and sustainability are influenced by sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and greatly variable according to geographical factors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
The area of Physical Education allows human beings to develop psychologically, socially, mentally, and physically, that is, to develop fully. Therefore, the importance of physical activity is globally recognized, however, in practice this is not the case, and there has been a considerable increase in the population's sedentary lifestyle. As in many other aspects related to education, for a long time, the teaching of Physical Education achieved little more in Portugal than well-intentioned speeches and legislative measures without much practical scope. Despite noticing an evolution in the value attributed to this curricular component, currently, it's still not valued in the way expected by the teaching staff. This Final Internship Report aims to reflect on and critically analyze the practices developed and to carry out research into a problem related to Supervised Teaching Practice. The report is split into two main parts. The first refers to the practices developed in the internship context based on reference authors and the guiding documents for Basic Education. The second one refers to the study and aims to analyze the value attributed to the subject area of Physical Education by teachers of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. For this purpose, a bibliographical analysis was carried out using scientific databases and a qualitative study. The investigative work has as its study group ten teachers from the 1st Cycle of Basic Education from two school groups in Viseu’s municipality and is based on semistructured interviews. The data collection was carried out in a natural research environment. The data collected by the research becomes significant when it is analyzed and interpreted, and this work is the result of reflection and study of the material collected, which allowed us to respond to the objectives outlined for the investigation. Through the study it is clear that teachers recognize the importance of Physical Education, however, the value they attribute to it is in conceptual terms, as in practice teachers do not value it in the idealized way, something that can be seen in their teaching. This devaluation is justified by the lack of spatial and material resources, but essentially by the insecurity that teachers feel, because they consider that their training is not sufficient for teaching Physical Education and, therefore, they defend the supporting of a specialized teacher in the area
