Tourism in rural areas as a broader concept: Some insights from the Portuguese reality
For sustainable rural development, the complementarity between the socioeconomic activities developed in rural areas is fundamental to create synergies and economic dynamics with positive externalities for the populations in less favoured spaces. The great challenge for the rural regions is the creation of attractive employment to avoid the desertification of these areas and the respective consequences. Some of the impacts of the rural exodus are related to the agroforestry activities abandonment and the increase of biomass in the respective land which, in certain circumstances, is fuel for forest fires. Tourism in rural areas/space (TRA/S) may contribute significantly to improving the complementarity among activities in less favoured spaces and promoting sustainability in mentioned areas. From this perspective, this research aims to explore dimensions associated with TRA/S, highlighting the main contributions from the scientific literature and showing that it can be considered, in some contexts, a broader concept than the concept of rural tourism. To achieve these objectives, first a systematic review based on metrics from the bibliometric analysis was carried out, considering 165 documents found in the Scopus database in a search performed on 19 March 2024 for the following topics and conditions: “tourism in rural areas” or “tourism in rural space.” Then, statistics on the Portuguese reality are presented and analysed, highlighting evidence of the context in Portugal. The findings obtained from the systematic review and bibliometric analysis show the importance of this economic activity for the rural regions and reveal some gaps in the literature that may be considered in future studies, namely the following: the links between tourism in rural areas and economic dynamics should be further developed, further address the interconnection between TRA/S dynamics and the Sustainable Development Goals, and more knowledge about the particularities of each Portuguese context. The statistical analysis of the Portuguese context shows that tourism in rural areas has benefited from the pandemic; it seems that tourists have discovered this form of tourism.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This report was produced in the context of the Project-Internship curricular unit of the master's degree in Applied Communication. It aims to present the experience of a four-month internship at Jornal do Centro. Starting on November 20, 2023, and ending on April 18, 2024. As well as to study the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on audiovisual production of communication companies, considering the internship host institution as a case study.
Due the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the different sectors of our society, it is justified to focus on studies that enhance the understanding of this context, particularly in the area of audiovisual production.
The main goal of the research component is to analyze the impact that the covid-19 pandemic has had on the Jornal do Centro’s audiovisual production. The aim is to understand the changes in the work routines at Jornal do Centro’s audiovisual production, as well to identify the strategies used to cope with the restrictions and which are still applied today, even without this context.
In order for the research to be carried out, a qualitative methodology was applied, based on an interview survey conducted with the institution's Entertainment Director, Cátia Aldeagas. Data collected analysis shows that the Jornal do Centro´s production took a break from recording during the pandemic, but did not stop producing content. The team adapted to the crisis in accordance with the established protocols and opted for home-made videos. Nonetheless, the content developed was planned with a view to not only keeping the company's audiovisual production active, but also responding to the population's need for useful content in the current context.
The internship at Jornal do Centro allowed a closer contact with the professional context, particularly in the fields of journalism and audiovisual production. In audiovisual production, the area most explored, it was possible to follow and work on the different tasks that its three phases require: pre-production, production, and post-production. It quickly became clear that all of them require a laborious and complex process, and a great deal of responsibility. In addition, through the research carried out within the institution, it was possible to see first-hand the reality of the consequences of the pandemic for audiovisual production
Digital communication has revolutionized the interaction between companies and their audiences, with TikTok being a particularly effective platform for creating viral content and developing engagement among young people. The study focuses on the use of TikTok by non-profit organizations in Ireland, highlighting Young Social Innovators (YSI). The main objective is to analyze YSI's communication strategies, especially in the use of TikTok, identifying guidelines for content production and interaction with the public. The study aims to clarify the importance of the platform for effective communication. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods, namely content analysis of TikTok videos of YSI competitors and interviews with directors of YSI's Communications department and Education department. The research took place between January 18 and May 18. YSI uses other platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X and LinkedIn to produce specific content for different audiences: young people, teachers and sponsors. The use of TikTok is viewed positively but requires more resources for content production. The interaction rate on TikTok of competing companies is relatively low, with the highest value being 1.87% for The Big Idea. This suggests that YSI could better integrate and exploit the platform as a communication strategy
Physical Education Teachers’ Representations of Their Training to Promote the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities
School inclusion is based on the need to adopt and implement a holistic view of education, training, and human development embodied in the idea of everyone, for everyone. In the context of Physical Education (PE), there are still several constraints to the realization of this universal desideratum. Among these, teacher training and qualification for the inclusion of students with Specific Health Needs (SHNs) stands out. That is, students with physical and mental health problems whose impact is significantly manifested in the learning process. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the representations of PE teachers about their training to develop inclusive processes with students with SES. Participants in this study were 151 PE teachers from different regions and districts of Portugal (Algarve, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Lisbon, Porto, and Viseu) who had 23.6 ± 8.1 years of teaching service. Teachers answered an online questionnaire, on the Google Forms platform, with open and closed questions about their education and training to develop inclusive processes in PE. The results indicate two significant dimensions: (1) initial training for teaching inclusive PE and (2) continuous training for inclusion. Regarding initial training, a large majority of the teachers under study, at the end of their initial training, did not have the essential skills to teach PE to students with SES. It was also identified that a large majority reported not having had any contact with students with SES throughout their training process for teaching. It was also recognized that this training was not adjusted to the development of intervention skills with students with SHN. Regarding continuous training, it was identified that attendance at this training increased their skills to teach PE to students with SHN. Workshops/actions/training courses are the main training models adopted. However, it is recognized that the training provided does not respond concretely to their training needs to intervene with students with SHN, since teachers essentially seek to improve intervention in the context of inclusive physical education. We conclude that teacher training for inclusion is not yet fully adjusted to the reality of the inclusive school paradigm. In this sense, in practical terms, the following are suggested: (1) the need for reinforcement in study plans with specific and long-term curricular units; (2) the introduction of real practice components in context; and (3) supervised pedagogical practice in diverse contexts
Knowledge about consumption of milk: Study involving consumers from two European Countries – France and Portugal
Milk assumes a pivotal role in human nutrition from early stages of life, although when going into adulthood the consumption habits can vary according to different perceptions from the consumer or even due to the presence of some intolerances. In this context, this research focuses on the consumption knowledge about the composition and nutritional value of milk and its effect on human health. The objective was to investigate how informed are the French and Portuguese participants and detect similarities or differences according to the country. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was set up to recruit participants from two countries: France and Portugal. The total number of participants was 543, of which 333 were French and 210 were Portuguese. For treatment of data basic statistics and tests were used to compare the results between the two countries, using the software SPSS. The results showed significant differences between the two countries in what concerns the participant’s knowledge about milk composition and nutritive value and also the effects of milk on human health. From the 13 items used to assess knowledge about composition and nutritive value of milk, significant differences were found between countries for six of them. Regarding the ten items used to evaluate the effects of milk on human health, significant differences were found for seven of them. As so, the knowledge about the effects on human health are more differentiated between the participants from France and Portugal, than the knowledge about the milk composition. Factor analysis showed six groups of questions, with good internal reliability (values of alpha varying from 0.707 to 0.825). It is concluded that participants from different countries, exposed to different environments (societal, political, or educational) can have different perceptions about milk and its effects on health.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Promotional tourism videos: examining the role of familiarity, attitude, and word-of-mouth towards the region
After the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism has grown enormously; this growth has been even more significant in Portugal. The dissemination of experiences by tourists who have already visited a region significantly impacts the interest aroused by other tourists. It is increasingly common for tourists to analyse the experiences of others before they travel. In this sense, word-of-mouth by tourists is a factor to be considered in tourism. Since tourism is based on experiences and familiarity with destinations is reinforced by accumulated experiences, studying the effects of familiarity on tourists' intention to word-of-mouth would be relevant. Furthermore, given that the attitude towards the region visited comprises cognitive and affective dimensions, it would be relevant to analyse the effects of the attitude towards the region on the intention to word-of-mouth. In this sense, this study sought to analyse the determining factors of word-of-mouth in tourism. To this end, a quantitative, cross-sectional survey was carried out, for which data was collected through a questionnaire from a sample of 906 tourists using the Smart PLS software. The results showed that familiarity with the region and attitudes towards the region is essential in tourists' intention to WOM. Therefore, this study supports the idea that tourist destinations should welcome tourists in the best way possible by providing them with greater familiarity with the region so that, through the word-of-mouth generated, it is possible to attract more tourists.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Risk of Gluten Cross-Contamination Due to Food Handling Practices: A Mini-Review
Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, affecting 1.4% of the world population. CD induces an inflammatory reaction that compromises small intestine villi, leading to nutrient malabsorption, and gastro and extraintestinal manifestations. Although other treatment approaches are being studied, adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only effective intervention to date. Despite this, about 50% of patients experience persistent inflammation, often associated with unintentional gluten ingestion through contaminated food. There are regulations for labeling gluten-free foods which specify a limit of 20 mg/kg (20 ppm). The risks of gluten cross-contamination above that level are present throughout the whole food production chain, emphasizing the need for caution. This review explores studies that tested different procedures regarding the shared production of gluten-containing and gluten-free food, including the use of shared equipment and utensils. A literature review covering PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science, VHL and Scopus identified five relevant studies. The results indicate that shared environments and equipment may not significantly increase gluten cross-contamination if appropriate protocols are followed. Simultaneous cooking of gluten-containing and gluten-free pizzas in shared ovens has demonstrated a low risk of contamination. In general, shared kitchen utensils and equipment (spoon, ladle, colander, knife, fryer, toaster) in controlled experiments did not lead to significant contamination of samples. On the other hand, cooking gluten-free and gluten-containing pasta in shared water resulted in gluten levels above the established limit of 20 ppm. However, rinsing the pasta under running water for a few seconds was enough to reduce the gluten content of the samples to less than 20 ppm.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Milk consumption: comparison between Portuguese and French consumers
Background: Milk has been consumed since immemorial times by humans as a way to provide essential nutrients from infancy to adulthood. Humans consume milk from different animals, like sheep, goat, camel or buffalo, but cow milk is by far the most consumed.
Aim: this work intended to focus on the consumption of milk among citizens form two European countries, Portugal and France.
Method: This study was undertaken questionnaire survey, distributed online among citizens from France and Portugal, following all ethical principles. Data were collected only from adult citizens after informed consent.
Results and discussion: A high percentage of participants in both countries regularly consume milk, on a daily dose varying from 125 to 250 mL. Some participants in both counties do not consume milk because they do not feel the need to. Additionally, a high number of French participants do not consume milk because they don’t like it, while in Portugal a high percentage do not consume due to reported lactose intolerance. The participants in both countries tend to consume semi-skimmed milk more often than other types of milk. Finally, significant differences were observed for the consumption of white brands, being these preferred in France, while in Portugal consumers tend to adopt more frequently the commercial brands.
Conclusion: The results obtained allowed concluding that there are some common aspects regarding the milk consumption patterns among the participants form the two countries, but also highlighted some differences, that are relevant to better plan public policies in both countries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Enhancing life with celiac disease: unveiling effective tools for assessing health-related quality of life
Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune chronic enteropathy provoked by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. Considering it´s only safe treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet, the burden of living with the disease becomes evident, as well as the need to assess CD health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This review aims to identify and analyze the instruments used to evaluate the HRQOL of adults with CD. This integrative review using a systematic approach was designed to achieve high scientific standards. Accordingly, the search strategy was developed and executed as recommended by the guideline of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Detailed individual searches were developed to Pubmed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. After careful analysis of the papers, 43 studies were included, in which seven instruments were identified: Celiac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ) (n=21), Celiac Disease Specific Quality of Life Instrument (CD-QOL) (n=17), Celiac Disease Assessment Questionnaire (CDAQ) (n=4), CeliacQ-7 (n=1), CeliacQ-27 (n=1), Black and Orfila´s self-developed instrument (n=1) and the Coeliac Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (CDQL) (n=1). The CDQ and CD-QOL were the two most applied instruments. Since the first focuses on the physical and mental symptoms related to the disease and the second focuses on the emotional repercussions of adhering to the GFD treatment for life (dysphoria), the CDQ application is an interesting option for countries that struggle with public policies for CD patients and patients with active CD. The CD-QOL could be used for countries with strict regulations for CD and gluten-free products and populations in remission. When comparing results among different populations, it is preferable to utilize culturally validated instruments, which have been applied across multiple countries, providing greater comparability between study findings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
