This report was produced as part of Supervised Professional Practice II (PPS II), which took place in a kindergarten (JI) located in the city of Lisbon. This report presents a critical and reflective analysis of the practice and research carried out with a group of twenty-one children aged between 3 and 5 years old. Throughout this intervention, the following research problem arose: difficulties in expression and communication, which I titled: ‘In this room, we are all Kelly’ - Expressive activities and overcoming communication difficulties. Thus, it reports on the adaptation process of a child whose mother tongue is not Portuguese, who revealed difficulties in interacting with peers and adults, raising an ethical and pedagogical concern focused on promoting equal opportunities and creating conditions that favour the child's participation and inclusion. The research was qualitative in nature and followed the case study methodology. Data collection involved the use of different techniques and instruments, such as direct participant observation, document analysis, field notes, weekly reflections and a structured interview with the cooperating educator in order to cross-reference various sources of information and obtain meaningful results. Through data analysis and subsequent triangulation, as well as a review of the literature, it was possible to understand that children whose mother tongue is not Portuguese face various difficulties in adapting to an environment where a language other than their own is spoken. These difficulties can cause the child to develop more slowly than others, causing insecurity and frustration. For this reason, it is extremely important that adults are aware of these difficulties in order to understand the impact they have on the child's development and to find useful strategies for their inclusion

The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. This research was supported by national funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of UID 05748: GreenUPorto - Centro de investigação em Produção Agroalimentar Sustentável and UIDP 05608/2020 and UIDB 05608/2020.Scientific evidence supports the need to adapt food systems, counteracting the current scenario characterized by excessive and growing consumption of animal products that translates into high environmental impact, unsustainability, and negative effects on health. The food services are responsible for a high and increasing carbon footprint, emerging as a sector that promotes food sustainability through the adaptation of its operational processes and food supply. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of menu reformulation and changes in the food offer on consumers' perception and acceptance at a food service unit. A study with two stages was conducted using a convenience sample of canteen consumers (n = 55) and canteen employees (n = 6) to which a self-completion questionnaire was applied. Participants were mostly female (76.2%) and had a mean age of 40 ± 9.4 years. Menus were reformulated in stage one; stage two included food offer reformulation. Meat was considered the most important food group in both studies. Food and nutrition were highlighted as important to consumers (>80%) with statistically significant differences (p 55%). Only 32.4% of the participants were satisfied with the proposed changes, but approximately 65.8% were willing to keep the suggested changes in the future. The results of this study present clues and opportunities for strategies to change the food offer of the food service, aiming for healthier and more sustainable meals

Highly porous NiFe nanofoams synthesized by dynamic hydrogen bubble template for hydrogen evolution in alkaline media

    No full text
When coupled with renewable energy sources, alkaline electrolysis (AEL) is a clean technology to produce hydrogen. The conventional electrodes that have been established as the commercial standard for AEL are perforated nickel plates, which have low surface area and high mass loads of active material. The use of Ni has been associated with the adsorption of protons and their recombination into H2 molecules, assisting and enabling the hydrogen evolution reactions. Due to the rising Ni price, there is a demand for less expensive electrode materials with identical, or better, performance. Thus, this work explores new alternative electrode materials and combines Ni with a cheaper and also electroactive metal, iron. For this purpose, highly porous bimetallic nanofoams are produced through the dynamic hydrogen bubble template. NiFe electrodes of different compositions are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronopotentiometry analysis. The results allow obtaining key parameters that are essential for the optimization of the electrode's response considering overpotentials, Tafel slopes, and other electrochemically relevant parameters

Validation of binocular vision and ocular surface assessment tools in digital eye strain syndrome: the DESIROUS study

    No full text
Background: To understand if binocular vision disorders are associated with Digital Eye Strain Syndrome (DESS), a study protocol is needed to ensure consistency across observational studies. This study aims to test the feasibility of a protocol to assess DESS, screen time, binocular vision, and dry eye. Methods: DESIROUS is an observational cross-sectional study among Polytechnic students at the Lisbon School of Health Technology, Portugal. The protocol includes three questionnaires (Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire [CVS-Q], Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey [CISS], and Dry Eye Questionnaire version 5 [DEQ-5]), an assessment of visual acuity and binocular vision (cover test for near and distance, stereopsis, near point convergence (NPC), near point accommodation (NPA), accommodative facility, vergence), and the ocular surface break-up tear (BUT) test. The questionnaires were validated using Cronbach’s alpha. Interobserver variability for BUT was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), and Bland–Altman analysis involving three observers (A, B, and C), compared against an expert as the gold standard. Results: A total of 18 students were included in the validation phase (mean age: 21.50 ± 0.62 years; females: 77.8%). The internal consistency of the CVS-Q (α = 0.773) and the CISS (α = 0.756) was considered good, while the DEQ-5 showed a reasonable internal consistency (α = 0.594). Observer A had the highest agreement with the gold standard (Cohen’s Kappa = 0.710 and p < 0.001; ICC = 0.924, p < 0.001). Conclusions: We provide a protocol to assess binocular vision and the ocular surface, with an emphasis on objective measures while integrating other assessment approaches. Further studies are necessary to validate this protocol, potentially incorporating new measures to enhance its validity across different populations

Background: As patient safety continues to be a global priority, it is crucial to emphasize the assessment and development of Patient Safety Culture [PSC] to advance healthcare quality and safety initiatives worldwide. This study focused on the assessment of PSC in Portuguese hospitals, specifically through the translation and cultural adaptation of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture 2.0 [HSOPSC 2.0] for the Portuguese context. Methods: The study followed a two-phase design, encompassing the translation, cultural adaptation, and psychometric evaluation of HSOPSC 2.0. A total of 2,604 fully completed questionnaires were collected. The sample consisted of seven public hospitals from different regions of Portugal, ensuring broad representation within the Portuguese National Health System. The translation process includes four stages: forward translation, back translation, expert panel review, and pre-testing. Instrument reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). Construct validity was evaluated through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), while convergent and discriminant validity were examined using Average Variance Extracted (AVE) and Pearson’s correlation coefficients, respectively. Results: The Portuguese translated version of the HSOPSC 2.0 [PT-HSOPSC 2.0] demonstrated good internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values ranging from 0.63 to 0.88, and factor loadings above 0.80 indicating strong factor reliability. CFA results supported the adequacy of the model fit: χ²/df = 4.64, p < 0.01; RMSEA = 0.05; CFI = 0.93; GFI = 0.90; TLI = 0.91; PCFI = 0.78; PGFI = 0.71. The instrument demonstrated good convergent validity, with AVE values at or above 0.50. Strengths included “Teamwork” and “Management Support for Patient Safety”, whereas “Open Communication” and “Hospital Management” were identified as areas requiring improvement. Overall, the PT-HSOPSC 2.0 demonstrated robust psychometric properties, confirming its suitability for assessing PSC in Portuguese hospitals. Conclusion: This study contributes to enhancing PSC assessment in Portuguese healthcare settings by providing a translated and validated version of the HSOPSC 2.0 adapted to the Portuguese context. Findings support that PT-HSOPSC 2.0 is a reliable and valid tool for evaluating PSC in Portuguese healthcare settings

    No full text
O sistema desenvolvido mostrou-se eficaz na identificação e documentação de erros pré-analíticos, promovendo uma cultura de segurança e melhoria contínua nos serviços laboratoriais.ABSTRACT: Laboratory tests are essential in healthcare, but errors in the pre-analytical phase, which account for 60-70% of laboratory errors, jeopardize the quality of results. The implementation of recording systems to identify and document errors is essential for continuous improvement, and the usability of these systems is a determining factor in their effectiveness. To this end, this study developed and evaluated a system for recording pre-analytical errors at Portimão Hospital, to identify faults, analyze their frequency, and assess the tool's usability. The pre-analytical phase proved to be especially susceptible to errors in the Emergency Department, where the unpredictable workflow resulted in a high incidence of hemolysis. Professional training was identified as essential to mitigate these failures. The recording system implemented was highly usable and adhered to, contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory quality. However, some limitations were identified, such as difficulties in filling it out and the absence of a time limiter, which impacted recording time. To optimize the system, ongoing training, regular monitoring, and possible integration of the laboratory into external quality assessments are recommended. The system developed proved to be effective in identifying and documenting pre-analytical errors, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement in laboratory services

A primeira, procura definir e contextualizar a atividade do stop-motion e sintetiza e organiza o panorama teórico e histórico da animação stop-motion internacional e nacional. This report, submitted as part of the Master’s in Theatre Specialized in Set Design at the School of Theatre and Cinema (ESTC) of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute, explores the specific characteristics of scenographic construction for stop-motion. It also studies and develops the a priori idea of “Tactile Singularity” based on the practical experience acquired during an internship in scenography and props for the short film Gary Contrary/Ermelino do Contra (n.d.), under the scientific guidance of Professor José Espada. The present investigation is structured into three complementary parts. The first provides a synthesized and organized theoretical and historical overview of international and national stop-motion animation. The second consists of a practical case study resulting from the internship. Finally, the third part delves into the theme that titles this work. This methodology aims to present a justified systemic investigation that seeks to demystify the preconception of stop-motion as an archaic, scarce, or underdeveloped technique. It also aims to analyze the process of “Tactilely Singular” scenographic construction, which stop-motion art seems to possess through its direct and visceral connection with both the audience and the creator, by valuing materiality in contrast to purely digital forms of creation. The study also intends to demonstrate how the emphasis on the artisanal process, subtle imperfections, and material textures can contribute to optimizing the visual appeal of animation, giving it a unique visual identity. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to a better academic understanding of scenographic construction for stop-motion, offering a well-founded perspective on the specific qualities of this animation technique and its relevance in the contemporary artistic landscape

ABSTRACT - Introduction: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is essential in evaluating glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON), particularly in asymptomatic stages, by analyzing retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and retinal nerve fiber layers (RNFL). However, the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and structural biomarkers from OCT remains unclear. Objective: To study the association between MRI and OCT findings through a systematic review, aiming to clarify their relevance in the early identification of visual system changes in GON. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of the current literature was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases, searching for Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms related to optical coherence tomography (OCT), spectral-domain, magnetic resonance imaging, and glaucoma. Initially, 719 articles were identified. Independently, two researchers screened for duplicates, applied eligibility criteria, and selected 28 articles for data extraction and evaluation. Results: Across the 28 selected articles, data from 1321 participants (781 GON and 540 controls) were analyzed. MRI structural findings were primarily associated with RNFL changes and visual field alterations, while metabolic findings appeared to correlate more with RGC changes. The most relevant MRI structural findings included a reduction in specific areas of the visual cortex and a decrease in the height and volume of the lateral geniculate nucleus. The most significant metabolic findings were indices of disruption and alterations in cerebral blood flow. Conclusions: The combined use of MRI and OCT structural findings shows potential for further exploration, especially in the early stages of the disease.RESUMO - Introdução: A tomografia de coerência ótica (OCT) é essencial na avaliação da neuropatia ótica glaucomatosa (NOG), especialmente nas fases assintomáticas pela análise da camada de células ganglionares da retina (CCGR) e da camada de fibras nervosas da retina (CFNR).
