Sustainable nooks: unveiling the potential of pocket ecosystems
In this work we will talk about what Paul Hawken described as, “a gift to a despairing world, a way to change the Earth in practical, restorative, and substantive ways, a simple act that creates beauty and enchantment: a mini-forest” (in the foreword Lewis, H., 2022,p.xi).
When considering how to combat climate change, biodiversity and soil health are two aspects to take into account. However, on the one hand, it is better to make efforts to maintain existing forests than to plant new ones. On the other hand, in many parts of the world, old forests have disappeared, and the space for planting new forests is sometimes very limited (Charkow, 2022).
Mini forests, also known as micro-forests or urban forests, are compact green spaces composed of a variety of trees, shrubs, plants, and native vegetation. This concept of high-density, layered planting with native species in very limited spaces is called the "Miyawaki forest."
Despite their diminutive size, mini forests play a vital role in promoting urban, sustainability (Egerer and Suda, 2023). By sequestering carbon dioxide and serving as natural air filters, they contribute significantly to mitigating climate change and improving air quality. Moreover, these green pockets regulate local climates, reduce ambient temperatures, and mitigate the urban heat island effect. The environmental benefits extend to public health and well-being, with mini forests offering spaces for recreation, stress reduction, and community engagement with nature.
These pocket forests have an active role in surrounding society in different aspects. They promote biodiversity, regulate the local climate by reducing ambient temperature, minimizing the heat island effect in urban areas, and by absorbing rainwater, contribute to public health, and can improve people's emotional and mental well-being, reduce stress, and promote mental health. They also serve as an important educational tool, providing opportunities for environmental awareness and community connection with nature (Fratini, 2022).
Recognizing the value of green spaces, the Eco Schools Council of the School of Social Communication, in collaboration with Biodiversity Islands and sponsored by NOESIS, spearheaded the establishment of a mini forest adjacent to Lisbon's bustling 2nd Circular Road. In addition to the previously mentioned advantages, this green corridor also aims to reduce noise pollution. In a space of 50m2, 150 trees and shrubs were planted, with 24 species being the same as those already existing in the surrounding area, such as the olive, ash, and holm oak. Other herbaceous species were also planted to help prepare the soil. The strawberry tree, lavender, and wild strawberry are some examples.
On November 25, 2023, ESCS hosted an activity involving students, teachers, and a Noesis team-building event that also welcomed several families, including young children as young as 2 years old. This initiative aimed to raise awareness, particularly among the younger generations.
Regarding the urban forest planted approximately 5 months ago (between November 25th and April 26th), it has shown significant growth, as evidenced by provided photographs. It is estimated that 10 years will be necessary to demonstrate its effectiveness in reducing noise pollution, acting as a natural barrier to minimize the sound impact of the second circular. Moreover, an increase in local fauna and flora diversity has been noted, indicating successful biodiversity promotion efforts.
As reflexões dirigem-se à escolaridade obrigatória, em particular até ao 9º ano, antes da iniciação à especialização.ABSTRACT - The school needs to change and, above all, to choose goals and find effective method-ologies to achieve them. The school is thought from the priority of ensuring equality be-tween individuals, to pursue social equality. The role of the school in the reproduction of inequalities is discussed, introducing the relationship between economic capital and cul-tural capita. As a strategy for a possible change in school, it is identified the importance of research, i.e., to mitigate economic and cultural inequalities, the school must be con-cerned with teaching the students to investigate, preparing them for the uncertainty of the future, for the adaptation to varied contexts, and for self-realisation. This change considers the project-based education. The reflections are addressed to compulsory schooling, up to the 9th grade, before the initiation to specialisation. Some hypotheses of changes in the education system are indicated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. Methods: We used data from 3663 population-based studies with 222 million participants that measured height and weight in representative samples of the general population. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in the prevalence of different BMI categories, separately for adults (age ≥20 years) and school-aged children and adolescents (age 5–19 years), from 1990 to 2022 for 200 countries and territories. For adults, we report the individual and combined prevalence of underweight (BMI 2 SD above the median). Findings: From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity in adults decreased in 11 countries (6%) for women and 17 (9%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 that the observed changes were true decreases. The combined prevalence increased in 162 countries (81%) for women and 140 countries (70%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. In 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity was highest in island nations in the Caribbean and Polynesia, Micronesia, and countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Obesity prevalence was higher than underweight with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 in 177 countries (89%) for women and 145 (73%) for men in 2022, whereas the converse was true in 16 countries (8%) for women, and 39 (20%) for men. From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of thinness and obesity decreased among girls in five countries (3%) and among boys in 15 countries (8%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80, and increased among girls in 140 countries (70%) and boys in 137 countries (69%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. The countries with the highest combined prevalence of thinness and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents in 2022 were Polynesia Micronesia and the Caribbean for both sexes and Chile and Qatar for boys. Combined prevalence was also high in some countries in South Asia, such as India and Pakistan, where thinness remained prevalent despite having declined. In 2022, obesity in school-aged children and adolescents was more prevalent than thinness with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 among girls in 133 countries (67%) and boys in 125 countries (63%), whereas the converse was true in 35 countries (18%) and 42 countries (21%), respectively. In almost all countries for both adults and school-aged children and adolescents, the increases in double burden were driven by increases in obesity and decreases in double burden by declining underweight or thinness. Interpretation: The combined burden of underweight and obesity has increased in most countries, driven by an increase in obesity, while underweight and thinness remain prevalent in South Asia and parts of Africa. A healthy nutrition transition that enhances access to nutritious foods is needed to address the remaining burden of being underweight while curbing and reversing the increase in obesity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We thank the companies and workers for participating in the study.Introduction: The presence of the Penicillium section Aspergilloides (formerly known as Penicillium glabrum) in the cork industry involves the risk of respiratory diseases such as suberosis. Methods: This study aimed to corroborate the predominant fungi presents in this occupational environment by performing a mycological analysis of 360 workers’ nasal exudates collected by nasal swabs. Additionally, evaluation of respiratory disorders among the cork workers was also performed by spirometry. Results: Penicillium section Aspergilloides was detected by qPCR in 37 out of the 360 nasal swabs collected from workers’ samples. From those, 25 remained negative for Penicillium sp. when using culture-based methods. A significant association was found between ventilatory defects and years of work in the cork industry, with those people working for 10 or more years in this industry having an approximately two-fold increased risk of having ventilatory defects compared to those working less time in this setting. Among the workers who detected the presence of Penicillium section Aspergilloides, those with symptoms presented slightly higher average values of CFU. Discussion: Overall, the results obtained in this study show that working in the cork industry may have adverse effects on worker’s respiratory health. Nevertheless, more studies are needed (e.g., using serological assays) to clarify the impact of each risk factor (fungi and dust) on disease etiology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Greening the plate: mycotoxin risks in sustainable food systems transition
The world population has changed dramatically over the last few centuries: an increasing number of people living on our planet; the world population today is around 2,000 times the size of what it was 12,000 ago when it was around 4 million — less than half of the current population of London. Pressure food systems exert on the environment has amplified over time: growth of the human population; changes in food consumption patterns; and intensification of production systems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper describes the internship experience in the TVI/CNN Portugal newsroom from January 8 to April 7, 2024, and aims to analyze the representations of political actors Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky in CNN Portugal's television news coverage.
The research looked at the construction and framing of news stories about the two leaders during February and March 2024, with special attention to their underlying motivations. The analysis revealed a predominantly episodic approach, marked by personalization, dramatization and amplification of the conflict, which contributed to the creation of polarized narratives. Putin was the most present actor in the media, with a negative framing centered on the problem frame, highlighting the confrontation with the West, the nuclear threat and the repressive nature of his regime. In contrast, Zelensky was portrayed in a more informative way, focusing on his fight for Western support, although he was also criticized, especially for his political consistency.
The statistical survey of 341 pieces of journalistic content, the interviews with newsroom professionals and the observations made during the internship period reveal the dominant political doctrine and the pressures inherent in television journalism, such as limited time and resources.
The methodological strategy adopted is of a documentary nature (literature review, analysis of all the information content of the programs Agora CNN, CNN Prime Time and CNN Meia Noite, discourse analysis and image representation) and non-documentary (exploratory interviews with professionals and participant observation)
The following report has the purpose of presenting a critical and contextualized reflexion about an activity developed in the context of the Supervised Professional Practice II (SPP II), made in a Private Social Solidarity Institution. From October of 2023 to February of 2024, I accompanied a group of 24 children which their years were between three and four years old. With them I was able to make daily observations that allowed me to substantiate the chosen theme. This investigation, which is about “The importance of the piloting instruments in appropriating the notion of time with the kindergarten children”, that has several main objectives (i) understanding the importance of the piloting instruments in the capacity of appropriating the notion of time; ii) understanding the Kindergarten Teacher’s conceptions about the importance of developing the notion of time with the kindergarten children; (iii) identifying the main piloting instruments used owing to develop the general notions of time.
To answer to different objectives which were initially defined, it was made a qualitative investigation in which the data was collected based participant observation and the informal conversations with the pedagogical team - which were materialized in the instrument notes of the field - interviews made to the three kindergarten teachers. With all the data collected, the content was analysed, from which was possible to conclude that the kindergarten’s teachers gave some value to the piloting instruments, although with less implementation than was expected. Nevertheless, when these methods are applied, it is possible to verify interest for the participation of the children on their construction and constant daily implementation.N/
Design, control, and testing of a multifunctional soft robotic Gripper
This paper proposes a multifunctional soft robotic gripper for a Dobot robot to handle sensitive products. The gripper is based on pneumatic network (PneuNet) bending actuators. In this study, two different models of PneuNet actuators have been studied, designed, simulated, experimentally tested, and validated using two different techniques (3D printing and molding) and three different materials: FilaFlex 60A (3D-printed), Elastosil M4601, and Dragonskin Fast 10 silicones (with molds). A new soft gripper design for the Dobot robot is presented, and a new design/production approach with molds is proposed to obtain the gripper’s PneuNet multifunctional actuators. It also describes a new control approach that is used to control the PneuNet actuators and gripper function, using compressed air generated by a small compressor/air pump, a pressure sensor, a mini valve, etc., and executing on a low-cost controller board—Arduino UNO. This paper presents the main simulation and experimental results of this research study.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
