Phenolic signatures of Portuguese olive cultivars with high nutritional relevance

    Get PDF
The olive fruit is recognized for being a significant source of phenolic compounds, including hydroxytyrosol (H-tyr), tyrosol (Tyr), oleuropein (Ole), and verbascoside (Verb). The maturity index (MI) significantly influences the phenolic profile, which is a cultivar-specific trait. A study was conducted to assess the evolution of the phenolic profile in seven olive cultivars during ripening: ‘Galega vulgar’ (Gv), ‘Azeiteira’ (Az), ‘Cobrançosa’ (Cob), ‘Picual’ (Pic), ‘Carrasquenha’ (Car), ‘Redondil’ (Red), and ‘Arbequina’ (Arb). The results indicate a declining trend in total phenolic compounds (TPC) across all cultivars, with Cob and Car exhibiting the highest values, over 60 g GAE kg−1 at T1 and above 30 g GAE kg−1 at T7, respectively. In Ole quantitation, Red demonstrated the highest values, recording 39 g kg−1 in T1 and 15 g kg−1 at T7, with per olive fruit unit measurements ranging from 19.7 mg at T1 to 22.7 mg at T7. These findings underscore olive fruit as an exceptional source of bioactive compounds and their advantageous health-promoting effects, which might be utilized as a functional food source, validating the unique phenolic profiles of each cultivar in relation to ripenin

European stranding networks as a tool for monitoring marine mammal populations (Part I): towards optimising the functioning of networks

    Get PDF
The study of stranded animals is a valuable aid to monitoring marine mammals globally. However, the utility of strandings data depends on their quality and representativeness, which is affected by various biological, physical, social and economic factors. An analysis of how stranding networks work could help understand limitations in the data collected and facilitate correcting for or even eliminating them. In 2021, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea’s Working Group on Marine Mammal Ecology carried out an expert consultation using a questionnaire to provide insight into the contribution of European stranding networks as a monitoring tool in European countries with Northeast Atlantic and adjacent coasts (hence also including some networks operating along the Mediterranean coast). A key aim was to identify ways to improve data on mortality of marine mammals due to fishery bycatch. The present paper is the first of a two-part series based on the responses to the questionnaire by 45 organisations from 19 countries, and focuses on characterising the activities and capacities of the stranding networks surveyed, identifying differences within and between countries, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, and providing recommendations to enhance the value and credibility of the information collected. The second paper will focus on the information specifically related to mortality due to fishery bycatch. Stranding networks provide extensive spatio-temporal coverage of European coastlines, but their activities may be constrained by limited resources as well as limitations imposed by the stranding process. There is a need for better coordination and standardisation of the collection and analysis of data and samples and increased spatial coverage to fill gaps. To improve data quality, in particular to support assessment of impacts of threats such as bycatch, more necropsies and associated sample analysis are needed. It would also be advantageous to collect more information from less fresh animals, record search effort, and give greater attention to pinnipeds and non-marine mammal taxa. We also highlight the need to make information available and the potential value of a common database. Streamlining the reporting of results at the European level and providing systematic funding to stranding networks in accordance with their needs are necessary steps to optimise their role as a tool for the long-term monitoring of marine mammals and other marine megafauna in Europe

Depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation and positive ideation: The mediation effect of unbearable psychache

    No full text
Objective: The aim of the present study is to test the relationship between depressive symptoms and high levels of suicidal ideation, as well as low levels of positive ideation (protective ideation against more severe suicidal behaviors). Additionally, the study aims to test the mediating effect of psychache and unbearable psychache. Methods: A sample of 334 young adults, university students from the University of Évora, mostly female (79.6%), aged between 18 and 25 years (M = 20.25; SD = 1.99), mostly undergraduate students (N = 247; 74%), and non-working students (N = 285; 85.3%), participated in the. Participants responded to an online research protocol via the LimeSurvey platform at the end of 2022. Several measures were used: the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, Psychahce Scale and Positive and Negative suicide Ideation Inventory. A mediation model was tested by path analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), introducing depressive symptoms as an exogenous independent variable, along with demographic variables that correlated with suicidal ideation or positive ideation as exogenous covariates. The variables psychache and unbearable psychache were included as mediating variables, and suicidal ideation and positive ideation as endogenous dependent variables. Results: The results show a partial mediating effect of the variable unbearable psychache in the relationship between depressive symptoms and both positive ideation and suicidal ideation. The model explains 62% of the variance in positive ideation and 51% of the variance in suicidal ideation. Conclusions: The variable unbearable psychache may help explaining why the presence of depressive symptoms contributes to higher levels of suicidal ideation and, at the same time, lower levels of positive ideation. According to the results, the presence of depressive symptoms increases the experience of unbearable psychache, which in turn leads to higher levels of suicidal ideation and lower levels of protective ideation against more severe suicidal behaviors

The present report, entitled “The space as a promoter of learning with the participation and involvement of children.”, results from the Supervised Teaching Practice carried out in Pre-school Education and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, within the scope of the master’s degree in Pre-school and Primary Education at the University of Évora. The research focuses on this theme, with the main objective being to “Promote children’s participation and involvement by valuing space.” The methodology adopted followed the principles of action–research–training, allowing a constant articulation between theory, practice, and reflection. Data collection involved various instruments, namely field notes, weekly reflections, cooperative intervention plans with feedback, conversations with the children and the cooperating educator/teacher, as well as photographic and audio records. This document is divided into two parts – the theoretical–conceptual framework and the research conducted within the supervised teaching practice in Pre-school and Primary Education contexts. In the first part, I present the conceptual foundations that supported my research. In the second part, I present the empirical component of the study, describing the pedagogical experiences carried out in both contexts (Pre-school and 1st Cycle) and interpreting them based on the research objectives. In the final considerations, I highlight how the experience in the Supervised Teaching Practices contributed to my professional development. Furthermore, the research reinforced the importance of an educational practice centered on listening, on children’s active participation, and on the creation of environments that promote meaningful learning

    Get PDF
Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of a multimodal program using augmented reality on the functional fitness and physical activity of older adults living in the community. Method: Seventy-eight older adults living in the community participated in this study. Participants were divided into three groups: a control group that maintained their usual activities, and two experimental groups, one with multimodal training (EG1) and the other with multimodal training combined with augmented reality (EG2). Participants were assessed at baseline and post-intervention, after 12 weeks. Functional fitness was assessed using the Rikli and Jones Senior Fitness Test, handgrip strength, the functional reach test, and the Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale. Physical activity was measured using accelerometry. Results: In EG1, lower limb flexibility, agility, cardiorespiratory fitness, and balance improved significantly between baseline and the 12-week outcome (p ≤ 0.001 for all). In EG2, improvements were observed in upper and lower limb strength, lower limb flexibility, agility, cardiorespiratory fitness, handgrip strength, and balance (p < 0.05 for all). Sedentary behavior increased in EG1 after the intervention. The clinical effect sizes of the interventions were large for balance (ES = 1.19) in EG1 and for upper limb strength (ES = 1.24) in EG2, and medium for cardiorespiratory fitness (ES = 0.74), agility (ES = 0.50), and lower limb flexibility (ES = 0.65) in EG1, and lower limb strength (ES = 0.61) and cardiorespiratory fitness (ES = 0.79) in EG2. Conclusion: Both intervention programs led to improvements in several functional domains. However, the multimodal training combined with augmented reality program showed improvements across more domains, resulting in greater changes. Physical activity did not show significant improvements
