Biosynthesis of silver-based nanoparticles: Critical assessment of antimicrobial assays and diffusion kinetics analysis
Get PDFSynthesis and application of nanoparticles (NPs) have shown promising results in various scientific fields due to their differentiating properties. However, current nanoparticle synthesis methods present environmental challenges. In this study biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were produced from microbial culture supernatants as an alternative to traditional routes for controlling biodeteriogenic microorganisms in cultural heritage materials. The particles strongly inhibited cultural heritage colonizing bacteria and fungi, with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 3 to 28 ppm. Kinetic analysis of disc diffusion assays revealed that inhibition zones correlate directly with silver ion release rates, rather than nanoparticle diffusion in agar. This led to a proposition of a simplified mechanistic model of Ag-based NPs behavior in disc diffusion assay. These findings carry broad implications - not only for the conservation of Cultural Heritage but also for diverse sectors, particularly human health - where accurate assessment of antimicrobial efficacy is paramount. No full textAs alterações climáticas estão a afetar a dinâmica de nutrientes em bacias
hidrográficas, intensificando fenómenos como a poluição difusa e a eutrofização,
com impactos diretos na qualidade da água, na integridade dos ecossistemas
aquáticos e na resiliência das comunidades humanas. A diversidade regional dos
fatores climáticos e antropogénicos que contribuem para a poluição por nutrientes
na Europa acentua a complexidade da sua gestão, sobretudo em bacias que
atravessam fronteiras administrativas e políticas. Neste contexto, torna-se
essencial desenvolver abordagens inovadoras, integradas e escaláveis que
permitam melhorar a governação da qualidade da água, reduzir a mobilização
hídrica de nutrientes e reforçar os serviços de ecossistema — aprovisionamento,
regulação, suporte e cultura.
O projeto ENGAGE propõe uma abordagem transdisciplinar e centrada nos
utilizadores finais, com o objetivo de reduzir a exportação de nutrientes e
maximizar os serviços de ecossistema em bacias hidrográficas nacionais e
transfronteiriças. Esta abordagem combina estratégias de envolvimento ativo de
stakeholders, modelação hidrológica e ambiental avançada, e ferramentas interativas
de apoio à decisão, adaptadas às realidades locais e regionais. O projeto procura
superar as limitações do modelo tradicional de previsão ambiental — centrado na
disponibilização de modelos genéricos, muitas vezes desconectados das
necessidades práticas — adotando, em alternativa, uma lógica inversa, orientada para a utilização prática pelos stakeholders, com base nos princípios da flexibilidade,
interoperabilidade, transparência e reprodutibilidade. As previsões ambientais são
aqui entendidas como declarações quantitativas sobre o futuro dos sistemas
terrestres e aquáticos, que informam decisões em contextos marcados por
incerteza, variabilidade espácio-temporal e crescentes pressões antrópicas. A
capacidade de produzir previsões relevantes e acionáveis é considerada
fundamental para apoiar estratégias de adaptação climática e gestão resiliente dos
sistemas socioecológicos.
Para assegurar a pertinência e utilidade das soluções propostas, o ENGAGE irá
criar Stakeholder Boards regionais (SB), compostos por representantes de entidades
com competências na gestão da água e dos recursos naturais. Estes conselhos
terão como funções principais (a) identificar desafios prioritários relacionados
com a poluição por nutrientes, (b) co-desenhar estratégias de mitigação adequadas
ao contexto local, (c) apoiar o desenvolvimento e validação de ferramentas de
apoio à decisão, e (d) definir indicadores de desempenho ambiental e de serviços
de ecossistema. Será ainda criada uma rede europeia de stakeholders (SB-network),
para promover o intercâmbio de experiências, identificar soluções com potencial
de escalabilidade e apoiar a harmonização de abordagens entre diferentes regiões
da União Europeia. A abordagem será aplicada e testada em três bacias
hidrográficas-piloto com diferentes contextos climáticos, socioeconómicos e
institucionais: (a) Bacia do Rio Guadiana (Portugal/Espanha), (b) Bacia do Rio
Gauja-Koiva (Letónia/Estónia), e (c) Bacia do Rio Hobølelva (Noruega).
Estes estudos de caso permitirão avaliar a eficácia e transferibilidade das
abordagens desenvolvidas. A implementação seguirá uma lógica iterativa, com
ciclos de co-design, experimentação e aprendizagem, em que os produtos
desenvolvidos — como modelos de simulação, interfaces digitais e métricas de desempenho — serão continuamente ajustados com base em evidência empírica
e feedback dos stakeholders. Esta abordagem centrada na utilização visa garantir a
relevância e aplicabilidade dos resultados do projeto para além do seu período de
execução, promovendo a sua adoção sustentada. A integração de conhecimentos
provenientes da hidrologia, ciências do solo, ciências sociais, economia ambiental
e governação reforça o carácter transdisciplinar do projeto, assegurando a sua
orientação para a ação e para a transformação institucional.
O ENGAGE pretende, assim, contribuir de forma significativa para a melhoria
da governação ambiental na Europa, promovendo uma gestão colaborativa,
adaptativa e cientificamente informada da qualidade da água e dos serviços de
ecossistema em bacias hidrográficas
Mobile E-Bike Sharing Systems with Integrated Photovoltaics: Electric Mobility Solutions for Large Events in Évora, Portugal
Get PDFMobile e-bike sharing stations integrated with photovoltaics are proposed for Évora to serve baseline urban demand and event-related surges while respecting heritage constraints. The system is powered primarily by photovoltaics, with optional grid-assist for resilience. We present a siting–sizing framework that (i) selects candidate locations via AHP and a p-median model based on origin–destination flows and travel times, and (ii) sizes PV and storage under two energy hypotheses: full-recharge of all e-bikes versus a usage-driven demand model (Wh/km × trip length × trips/bike). Using worst-month irradiance and aggregate conversion losses, a worked example shows that the full-recharge assumption yields higher capacities (≈6 kWp PV + 25 kWh storage per 10 bikes for event peaks), whereas the usage-driven model reduces sizing substantially while meeting service levels; both are reported to ensure robustness. This compact framework is directly applicable to heritage cities planning PV-micromobility for large events
TRIDENT: project, updates, and tech insights for long-term deep-sea monitoring
No full textTRIDENT is developing a new architecture and technological solutions for long-term deep-sea monitoring. In December 2024, TRIDENT had a set of prototypes ready and undergoing further testing, prototypes that will help ensure these new technological approaches.
These will provide a new tactic to deep-sea EIA since they intend to support the long-term deployment of an autonomous, dynamic, robotic set of assets, reducing cost and ensuring trustworthy, constant data to the surface in real-time /near real-time. That real-time/near-realtime data will feed a database, supporting a Traffic Light System, running models of the impacts and their evolution as the mining operation progresses, and generating alerts when thresholds are approached/surpassed.
In the TRIDENT approach, it is envisaged that every mining machine has embedded a system
“independent from the contractor”, the Black Box, that will ensure data recording, independent positioning of the mining machine as well as the position of the other assets, recording of data, near-field monitoring, connection to the sensing systems in the mining machine, connection to the underwater communication infrastructure, performing as an access-point to nearby assets in the seabed and bridging the seabed assets to the surface, providing the information in realtime/near real-time.
The Black Box, like all the other autonomous dynamic robotic assets in the seabed, has
embedded a Smart Low-power Data Logger and has independent power to prevent any loss of
data recording in case of a severed connection to the surface.
The Smart Low-Power data logger will also be used in all the other autonomous assets on the seabed and water column. This low-power, high-capacity system is designed to sustain sensing systems in a low-power working profile. It is equipped with standard interfaces, allowing for the connection of the different market standard sensors to the dynamic underwater wireless communication infrastructure. To perform in an advanced manner, it also has edge-computing abilities, providing on-board data pre-processing actions. This system is divided into two main
elements: a smart interface with the sensors unit and a smart power management unit.
These two main elements of the TRIDENT system would not be able to perform adequately unless there is a Dynamic Underwater wireless communication Infrastructure in place. The DUI ensures navigation, monitoring, positioning, energy transfer, and storage in an advanced manner.
In terms of dynamic underwater navigation infrastructure, the system allows overcoming the present limitations of SoA acoustic underwater positioning systems in an ever-changing deepsea mining environment. One challenge was to correctly address the communication vs positioning since both share the same medium.
Another crucial element of this infrastructure is the advanced solutions for sensor powering to meet the long-term deployments that are TRIDENT’s goal. This is based on an innovative wireless deep-sea power transfer system technology. Different designs are under evaluation for wireless sensor powering and precise energy management, and field testing is to be performed next year
A música cênica de Karlheinz Stockhausen para clarinete solo: perspectivas sobre a performance e uma interpretação de HARLEKIN e DER KLEINE HARLEKIN

de Karlheinz Stockhausen, numa perspectiva que discute diferentes interpretações e conceitos
acerca das composições, a fim de gerar um produto artístico – a performance da autora. Como
delineadores dessa abordagem, o estudo apresenta: o cenário onde a música com habilidades
extramusicais enquadra-se no universo das composições de Stockhausen, bem como
definições de conceitos que envolvem música cênica, performance e liberdades
interpretativas. Isso posto, serão viabilizados diálogos entre autores que se debruçaram sobre
as obras em momentos distintos, a exemplo da clarinetista Suzanne Stephens – a quem as
obras foram dedicadas – atual gestora da Fundação Stockhausen; e da autora desta pesquisa.
Por fim, o trabalho apresenta uma proposta interpretativa das obras, evidenciando a
autonomia criativa do intérprete no espaço que se constitui entre as ideias notadas pelo
compositor e a atualização da música no espaço-tempo, expressa pela ação do performer,
acrescida de elementos técnicos próprios do instrumento clarinete, que podem colaborar com
os próximos instrumentistas, que desejarem estudar as obras. The Music of Karlheinz Stockhausen for Solo Clarinet: Performance Perspectives and
an interpretation proposal for HARLEKIN and DER KLEINE HARLEKIN - Abstract:This research focuses on Karlheinz Stockhausen’s works HARLEKIN and DER
KLEINE HARLEKIN, with a discussion of different interpretations and concepts related to
these compositions, with the goal of developing a final artistic product: the author’s own
performance. Outlining this approach, this study presents: the extra-musical scenarios where
this music fits within Stockhausen’s compositional universe, as well as the definition of
concepts that involves scenic music, performance and interpretative freedom. With that
established, the research will provide dialogues between authors that immersed themselves in
these works at different moments, clarinetist Suzanne Stephen - to whom the works were
dedicated, now the current director of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music and author of
the research. At last, this research will present a performance proposal of the works,
highlighting the creative autonomy of the performer, in the space that exists between the ideas
noted by the composer and the updated music at the time-space, expressed by the performer's
action and added with technical elements particular to the clarinet as an instrument, with the
goal to aid future instrumentalists that would desire to study these piece

No full textEsta dissertação tem como objetivo compreender e comparar os sistemas de lobbying na União Europeia e nos Estados Unidos. Para isso, serão analisados aspetos como a transparência, o papel dos grupos de interesse e os principais desafios enfrentados nesse processo, a fim de compreender as diferenças entre os dois sistemas e avaliar o seu impacto no cenário político e na formulação de políticas públicas. Além disso, será apresentada uma visão geral dos dois sistemas e do contexto político vigente em ambos os territórios. Essa análise tem como objetivo identificar qual sistema, ou quais dos seus elementos, demonstram maior eficiência e aderência aos princípios éticos que são amplamente aceitos. Por fim, pretende-se criar um sistema híbrido de lobbying que ajude a combater as fraquezas de ambos os sistemas e assim criar um sistema mais justo e mais transparente.
Comparative analysis of lobbying dynamics between the United States and the European Union - Abstract: This dissertation aims to understand and compare the lobbying systems in the European Union and the United States. To achieve this, aspects such as transparency, the role of interest groups, and the main challenges faced in the process will be analyzed to identify the differences between the two systems and assess their impact on the political landscape and policymaking. Additionally, an overview of both systems and the current political context in these regions will be presented. Through this analysis, the study seeks to determine which system, or which of its elements, demonstrates greater efficiency and adherence to widely accepted ethical principles. Finally, the aim is to create a hybrid lobbying system that will help combat the weaknesses of both systems and thus create a fairer and more transparent system
Female empowerment in Portuguese comics: a manifestofor gender equality

socialising and educational vehicle, this study presents the following research question: how does the
representation of gender appear in comics of Portuguese authorship published and exhibited in Portugal
in the transition from the second to the third decade of the 21st century? The objective of the research is
to analyse gender representations in Portuguese-authored comics. This research is based on a qualitative
approach, through the use of qualitative analysis of the selected corpus; We opted for content analysis
and chose analysis categories that are broken down into recording units. The results obtained demonstrate
that comics offer a varied analysis of gender representations, giving greater visibility and expression to the
female gender. They narrate the daily life and roles of women in today’s society, allowing the reader to
reflect on stereotypes, gender (in)equality and discrimination, as well as emancipation and empowerment

Estratégia de Comunicação para o ginásio Supera
No full textCom este estágio curricular pretende-se utilizar o conhecimento adquirido de modo a contribuir para uma melhoria na gestão da comunicação do Ginásio Supera. Atualmente, o ginásio realiza algumas ações como o marketing boca a boca, e publicações nas redes sociais, mas não tem uma estratégia de comunicação bem definida. Este trabalho pretende ajudar a colmatar essa deficiência, desenvolvendo uma estratégia de comunicação, contribuindo para ajudar na divulgação do espaço, serviços e da marca.
Para a realização deste trabalho foi utilizada a seguinte metodologia: revisão da literatura sobre comunicação e estratégia de comunicação de marketing, recolha de dados secundários e de dados primários, nomeadamente através de observação participante para realizar a análise da empresa e da marca, a análise de mercado, da concorrência e da envolvente. Com base na revisão da literatura e na análise da situação elaborou-se uma estratégia de comunicação composta por 4 táticas. Implementaram-se algumas táticas dessa estratégia e analisaram-se os resultados.
Os resultados obtidos foram bastante positivos, uma vez que se conseguiu reter 13% dos clientes que pretendiam sair e angariar novos clientes, constituindo um aumento de 4,1% no total da base de clientes. Houve bom feedback dos clientes relativamente às táticas implementadas e ao trabalho realizado nas redes sociais e a imagem da empresa nas redes sociais melhorou, o que foi comprovado pela redução de comentários negativos. - The title of this internship report is: Communication strategy for Supera gymmnasium - Abstract: With this curricular internship, the aim is to apply the knowledge acquired in order to contribute to an improvement in the communication management of Supera’s Gym. Currently, the gym carries out some actions such as word-of-mouth marketing and social media posts, but it does not have a well-defined communication strategy. This work aims to help address this gap by developing a communication strategy, contributing to the promotion of the space, services and the brand.
For the development of this work, the following methodology was used: a literature review on communication, marketing communication strategy, the collection of secondary and primary data, namely through participant observation to analyze the company and the brand, as well as market, competition and environmental analysis. Based on the literature review and the situation analysis, a communication strategy was developed, consisting of 4 tactics. Some of these tactics, which are part of the strategy, were implemented and after that the results were analyzed.
The results obtained were very positive, as 13% of the clients who intended to leave were retained, and new clients were acquired, representing a 4,1% increase in the total client base. There was also good feedback from customers regarding the implemented tactics and the work carried out on social media. The company’s image on these platforms also improved, as evidenced by a reduction in negative comments

A publicação organiza-se em três partes, refletindo a natureza intrínseca do projeto.
A primeira, Diálogo com os Compositores, oferece um espaço dedicado a Christopher Bochmann e Fernando Lapa, permitindo-lhes uma reflexão aprofundada sobre o ofício da composição e sobre os percursos artísticos que o sustentam.
A segunda, Interpretação e Gravação, apresenta um relato detalhado do processo, descrevendo a forma como a ideia musical se converteu em realidade artística.
