Assessing European and Brazilian Portuguese LLMs for NER in Specialised Domains
This paper discusses the impact of Portuguese variants in Large Language Models for the task of named entity recognition (NER) in specialised domains. The tests were made on a Brazilian Portuguese legal and a European Portuguese historical corpora. The models taken into account are BERTimbau (PT-BR), Albertina (PT-PT and PT-BR), and XML-R (multilingual). The impact was more evident in the Portuguese historical corpus, which resulted in higher F1 measures compared to previous works that did not consider the same language variant. Additionally, the study underscores the impact of model architecture on performance, highlighting the critical role of both linguistic alignment and model size in enhancing NER in specialised domains. This work has received funds from the Portuguese Science Foundation FCT, in the context of the projects CEECIND/01997/2017 and UIDB/00057/2020
An example of integration between art, technique and landscape: the Cárcamo de Dolores (1941-1993)
de Dolores (1941-1993) ABSTRACT: This study examines the Cárcamo de Dolores (1941-1951), a hydraulic complex within
Mexico City’s Lerma System, as a cultural landscape merging engineering, art, and heritage.
Designed to supply water during the city’s mid-century population boom, the Cárcamo
integrates architecture (Ricardo Rivas), hydraulic engineering (Eduardo Molina), and mural
art (Diego Rivera).
(“Water, Origin of Life in the Earth”) finished in 1951 —painted with experimental polymer
techniques—synthesizes scientific (Oparin’s theories), mythological (Tláloc), and historical
narratives of water, transcending its utilitarian function. Adopting an interdisciplinary lens (art history, hydraulic technology, industrial
heritage), the research traces the Cárcamo’s evolution from operational infrastructure to
museum (1993). It analyzes how its material and symbolic layers reflect Mexico’s
relationship with water: from pre-Hispanic systems (chinampas, aqueducts) to 20th-century
modernization. The site emerges as a "memory device" bridging technical knowledge,
political conflicts, and cultural imaginaries, framed through Actor-Network Theory (Latour)
and heterotopia (Foucault).
The study also assesses its heritage value, advocating for UNESCO recognition not
only for Rivera’s mural but as a testament to Mexico’s hydraulic culture. The Cárcamo thus
becomes a nexus for contemporary debates on water management, art restoration, and
industrial heritage preservation
Tracing Local Production and Agricultural Trade: A Multi-Analytical Study of Roman Amphorae at Conímbriga (Central Portugal)
Amphorae are a significant type of Roman pottery, serving as both transport containers and indicators of economic and technological practices across the Empire. Despite their importance in interpreting local economic dynamics in Roman Lusitania, the production origins, technological characteristics and functional roles of amphorae from Conímbriga in Portugal remain poorly understood. Previous research has focused primarily on typological comparisons with imported forms, providing limited insight into whether these vessels were produced locally or how they were incorporated into regional trade and agricultural systems. This study takes a multi-analytical approach to examine a group of ten amphorae dating from the 1st to the 5th century AD. While these vessels formally resemble well-known types from Gaul and Hispania, they appear to have been manufactured locally using fabrics consistent with those found in regional common wares. To examine the raw materials, production techniques and possible contents, the analysis integrates a typological assessment with a range of archaeometric methods, including optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Recent gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) results contextualise these data further, enabling an exploration of how specific technological choices may have influenced or reflected the intended function of the amphorae. The findings shed new light on local ceramic production and contributed to broader debates concerning Roman provincial economies and material culture
tendo pedido/encomendado 14 delas; - Abstract:
The Bass Clarinet as a solo instrument: writing, instrumental technique and
repertoire by Portuguese composers or residents in Portugal
This dissertation explores the repertoire for bass clarinet as a solo instrument, written in
Portugal or by Portuguese composers aiming to deepen and broaden existing knowledge on
the subject.
To achieve this, a comprehensive search and categorization of the Portuguese repertoire was
performed, taking into consideration the prominence of the instrument in each work.
Additionally, the most prevalent orchestration treaties, as well as manuals and technical
documents specific for bass clarinet, were studied in order to determine the best
recommendations for the instrument.
To enable a detailed musical analysis in the perspective of the performer, 30 works were
selected for the corpus of this dissertation. This allowed for the characterization of the
repertoire, its writing and what is required from the performer in each piece. It was possible
to conclude that extended techniques and the extreme registers of the bass clarinet were used
with caution in these works. The pieces presented an expressive character, and less of an
avant-garde aesthetic, while demanding virtuosity and technical mastery from the
performer.
On the other hand, this study intended to provide effective tools in order to simplify the
interpretive and technical approach of the clarinetist to the repertoire and to the instrument
itself.
One of the most important goals of this work was to encourage the expansion of the
repertoire for bass clarinet, by commissioning and requesting the composition of new pieces,
performing them, and promoting their dissemination on a national and international level.
To complement this goal, three recitals were organized within the scope of this dissertation as well as the recording and release of the CD Extended Duo with the pianist Ana Telles.
Over the course of this dissertation the author premiered 16 pieces, 14 of them by
commission/reques
- Small animal practice Abstract: This report is part of the curricular unit Curricular Traineeship and follows the student's internship at the veterinary practice Clínica Veterinária de Armação de Pêra. It is divided into three chapters: the first chapter describes the activities carried out during the traineeship and presents the followed casuistry. The second chapter presents a monograph about canine parvovirus infection. The third chapter presents two clinical cases of the disease. Canine parvovirus infection is a highly contagious disease that affects dogs and is mainly characterized by severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Despite the availability and efficacy of vaccines, the virus remains a significant animal health concern due to its high mortality rates, especially among puppies. The virus is transmitted through direct or indirect contact with contaminated feces, which makes it a persistent threat in environments with large dog populations
This thesis examines how Italian migrant women shaped Argentina’s industrial heritage between
the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, not only through paid factory labor but
also by transmitting social and cultural values that reconfigured local identities in a transnational
setting.
It asks how these women contributed to the making of Argentina’s material and intangible industrial
heritage and why their roles were long rendered invisible in sources and historiography.
Methodologically, the study integrates industrial, social, and gender history with oral history
and on-site archival research. It combines macro analysis of censuses with micro reconstructions
from factory records, centering two and a half months of fieldwork in Argentina (Buenos
Aires, C´ordoba and Luj´an) that recovered personnel files, payrolls, and ledgers rarely used in
gendered accounts of industrialization. Two case studies -Algodonera Flandria and F´abrica
Argentina de Alpargatas — anchor the analysis of women’s work, life-courses, and community
roles within contrasting industrial regimes (paternalist “company town” vs. metropolitan,
production-driven stability). Findings demonstrate that Italian women were constitutive actors
in Argentina’s industrial modernity. At Flandria, welfare paternalism stabilized families while
narrowing long-term factory careers for women; at Alpargatas, workflow needs created negotiated
permanence and an archival footprint of sustained female employment, together bracketing
the spectrum of possibilities for immigrant women workers.
The thesis argues for a gendered view of industrial heritage that includes skills, experiences,
activism, and social memory as intangible assets, and it outlines policy avenues (archival preservation,
museum narratives, cultural routes) to promote Italo-Argentine women’s legacies today; - Résumé
Large-scale industrial spaces and cultural challenges: the case of Hangar Y, between rehabilitation and industrial style
valorisation et la réinterprétation de ces espaces; - Title: Large-scale industrial spaces and cultural challenges: the case of Hangar Y, between
rehabilitation and industrial style
Abstract:
With the decline of industrial activity, many buildings have been left in a state of abandonment. These
once bustling production sites are now often seen as doomed to decay or demolition. However, there’s
a shift happening as people begin to recognize the cultural significance of these structures and the loss
that would come with their destruction. This has led to a surge of rehabilitation projects, breathing a
new life into these spaces.
This thesis focuses on the transformation of abandoned industrial sites into cultural spaces, particularly
through the lens of the industrial style, which reinvigorates these places with a fresh aesthetic appeal.
Although these brownfields are a consequence of industrial downturns, they now serve a twofold
purpose: they preserve industrial memory and provide new areas for use. Contemporary art, facing its
own institutional challenges, has found a new home in these revitalized sites. Yet, amidst this progress,
an essential question emerges: are these rehabilitations genuinely aimed at preserving heritage, or are
they primarily motivated by profitability, leveraging a trendy aesthetic?
The case of Hangar Y in Meudon, originally built as an airship laboratory in 1879 and now repurposed
as a contemporary art space, highlights these complexities. By examining its history and development,
we can uncover both the opportunities and challenges inherent in converting industrial heritage, such
has the interactions between public and private.
This research, which weaves together history, art history, architecture and cultural management, invites
reflection on the sustainability of industrial heritage and prompts us to consider contemporary society’s
role in appreciation and reinterpreting it
treinado, utilizando as metodologias CATA e Sorting.
Color evolution in white wines: Palpite Branco Reserva use case from
2007 through 2023
Color is one of the most important characteristics in the sensory analysis
of wine, influenced by factors such as grape variety, ripeness, soil, climate,
winemaking process, and ageing. This study evaluated the evolution of color in a
white wine over time, through the analysis of bottles from nine vintages ranging
from 2007 to 2023. Chemical analyses were performed (acidity, pH, sulfur
dioxide, and oxygen), along with instrumental color analysis using the CIELab
system, according to OIV methodologies. Additionally, a sensory evaluation of
color was carried out by an untrained panel using the CATA and Sorting methods.
The results showed greater oxidation and variability between bottles in older
wines, especially from 2009 and 2011. In contrast, the more recent vintages from
2020 to 2023, bottled with technical corks, exhibited lower variability and brighter
color
Saliva Immunoglobulin Concentrations Are Associated with Colostrum Intake and with Serum Concentrations in Newborn Calves
The transfer of passive immunity (TPI) is vital for newborn calf health and is typically assessed through blood sampling to measure serum or plasma IgG or total protein levels. Saliva offers a less invasive alternative. This study evaluated the potential of saliva for assessing TPI. Saliva and serum samples were collected from 20 calves at birth and on days 1, 2, and 7 of life to measure IgG, IgA, IgM, and total protein concentrations. Colostrum fed to the calves was also analyzed for gross composition and immunoglobulin content. Colostrum intake and composition were associated with saliva IgG (R2 = 0.48; p = 0.019), saliva IgM (R2 = 0.73; p = 0.02), and saliva total protein (R2 = 0.41; p = 0.043). Serum IgG and IgA levels were predicted by saliva IgG (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.33) and IgA (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.13), respectively, though predictive accuracy varied by calf age (IgG: p < 0.001; R2 = 0.40; IgA: p < 0.001; R2 = 0.91). In conclusion, the results suggest that both saliva IgG and IgA concentrations could be used to predict IgG and IgA serum concentrations. Nevertheless, further studies are still needed to clarify the best time for sample collection
Should the European union adopt electric vehicles?
To answer the question posed in the title of this study (should the European Union adopt electric vehicles?), we must analyze the determinants of battery electric vehicles adoption in the European Union. Our study encompasses ten years of statistical data for twenty countries that are members of the European Union. After the compilation of statistical data, preliminary tests were performed, with initial results suggesting the use of a Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag model for econometric analysis. To perform the model, the statistical software Stata 18 was used. Advantages of the Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag model are that it allows you to capture short- and long-term impacts. Thus, our research investigates the short- and long-term dynamics that affect battery electric vehicles' penetration in European Union member countries. The economics and environmental variables analyzed are gross domestic product per capita, CO₂ emissions, the price gap between battery electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles, charging infrastructure, and fuel prices. The estimation results reveal heterogeneous and asymmetric effects of economic and structural factors on battery electric vehicles adoption across the European Union. In the short run, both the price gap between battery electric vehicles and conventional cars and the availability of charging infrastructure display negative and statistically significant coefficients, suggesting that cost barriers and insufficient infrastructure continue to constrain the expansion of the electric vehicle market. In the long run, the existence of a stable equilibrium relationship is confirmed by a negative and statistically significant error correction term. Among the explanatory variables, gross domestic product per capita emerges as the principal driver positively influencing battery electric vehicles diffusion, while CO₂ emissions, the price differential, and gasoline prices exert negative impacts. Higher income levels enhance the affordability and accessibility of electric vehicles, facilitating consumer transition towards cleaner mobility. Overall, the findings suggest that the adoption of battery electric vehicles in the European Union depends on the interplay between economic capacity, policy incentives, market conditions, and technological affordability. Aligning these dimensions is fundamental to accelerating the electrification of the transport sector and achieving the European Union’s long-term decarbonisation objectives
