Becoming with the City: Children’s Opportunities of Education for Sustainability in Urban Areas
This chapter explores the critical role of children’s participation in urban spaces as a key component of education for sustainability. Recently, children’s engagement with outdoor environments has decreased, particularly in Europe, diminishing their visibility in public spaces and weakening their ties to the community, conflicting with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Drawing from a case study from Èvora, Portugal, where Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings have increasingly incorporated the city into their pedagogical approaches aiming to enrich children’s experiences beyond the classroom, the study presented here used five in-depth interviews of ECE teachers to examines the motives, opportunities, and challenges associated with these practices. The theoretical framework is rooted in socio-cultural traditions, highlighting the significance of the city as a Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Haraway’s concepts of “becoming with” and “worlding,” where children co-create their worlds through interaction with both human and more-than-human entities. The chapter concludes by underscoring the potential of these practices to transform ECE, promoting children’s emotional and cognitive connection with the world, ecological awareness, children’s agency and response-ability, positioning them as active participants in their socio-cultural contexts, thereby contributing to a sustainable and interconnected urban ecosystem
Rock-pools and limpets: patchiness and connectivity in temperate intertidal reefs
This thesis advanced the knowledge of temperate reef ecology by examining the role of rockpools
as mosaic microhabitats for intertidal limpets. Five limpet species – Patella ulyssiponensis
(PU), P. depressa (PD), P. rustica (PR), P. vulgata (PV), and Siphonaria pectinata (SP) – were
studied (distribution, density, and size-structure) inside and outside rock-pools along the
Portuguese southwest coast. Recruitment and population dynamics of the three most common
species (PU, PD, and SP) were examined across distinct microhabitats near Sines (SW Portugal),
including natural and artificial habitats inside the Port of Sines.
Juveniles of PU were almost exclusively found in microhabitats dominated by crustose coralline
algae (CCA). There was no evidence of CCA-enhanced settlement from an experiment in vitro
conditions. CCA are crucial for the early benthic life of PU, likely promoting post-settlement
survival.
Juveniles of PD and SP were widely distributed in moist microhabitats, and most abundant in
rock-pools. PU, PD, and SP recruited into mid-shore rock-pools year-round. Recruitment was
lower inside the Port, where artificial structures proliferate. Rock-pools in SW Portugal are
nurseries for both patellid and siphonariid limpets.
Limpets (PU, PD, and SP) of various sizes co-occurred across rock-pools, pool edges, and openrock;
rock-pools extend their vertical distribution upwards. PV occurred most frequently along
pool edges; PR was absent from rock-pools and their edges. Patterns of intra-specific density
evidenced pool-residency of PU above the low-shore, and gradual migration of PD and SP
outwards from rock-pools. Landscape variability (heterogeneity of microhabitats) of shores with
different geomorphology influenced the population structure of PD on the mid-shore open-rock.
CCA cover predicted the abundance of both patellids inside rock-pools.
Over a decade-long experiment on rock-armour structures in the Port of Sines, drill-cored rockpools
were found to provide limpet nurseries and source-areas for their ontogenic emigration
to open-rock. Effects were species-specific (abundance of PD and SP was enhanced by four and
nine times, respectively) and context-dependent (shaped by the colonization of pool
assemblages). Eco-engineered rock-pools can generate persistent and cross-microhabitat
biodiversity benefits. - Poças-de-maré e lapas: fragmentação e conectividade em litorais rochosos entremarés de regiões temperadas - Resumo:
Esta tese contribuiu para o conhecimento da ecologia de litorais rochosos de regiões
temperadas ao examinar o papel das poças-de-maré como micro-habitats em mosaico para
lapas em ambientes entremarés. Cinco espécies de lapas – Patella ulyssiponensis (PU), P.
depressa (PD), P. rustica (PR), P. vulgata (PV) e Siphonaria pectinata (SP) – foram estudadas
(distribuição, densidade e estrutura dimensional) dentro e fora de poças-de-maré ao longo da
costa sudoeste portuguesa. O recrutamento e a dinâmica populacional foram examinados em
microhabitats distintos para as três espécies de lapas mais comuns (PU, PD e SP), na linha de
costa perto de Sines (SW Portugal), incluindo habitats naturais e artificiais dentro do Porto de
Sines.
Os juvenis de P. ulyssiponensis foram encontrados quase exclusivamente em micro-habitats
dominados por algas coralináceas incrustantes (CCA). Não houve evidência de assentamento
larvar induzido por CCA numa experiência em condições in vitro. As CCA são cruciais para o
recrutamento de PU, provavelmente promovendo a sobrevivência dos primeiros estádios de
vida bentónica após o assentamento larvar.
Os juvenis de P. depressa e S. pectinata distribuíram-se amplamente em micro-habitats
húmidos; sendo mais abundantes em poças-de-maré; PU, PD e SP recrutaram durante todo o
ano em poças-de-maré no nível médio de maré; o recrutamento foi menor no interior do Porto,
onde proliferam as estruturas artificiais. As poças-de-maré no sudoeste de Portugal são
berçários de lapas para patelídeos e sifonariídeos.
A presença de lapas (PU, PD e SP) de vários tamanhos foi observada em poças-de-maré, margens
de poças e rocha emersa circundante. As poças-de-maré estenderam a distribuição vertical
destas espécies para cotas superiores. PV ocorreu com maior frequência em redor de margens
de poças; P. rustica não ocorreu em poças-de-maré nem nas suas margens. Os padrões de
densidade intra-específica evidenciaram a residência de PU em poças-de-maré acima do nível
intertidal inferior e uma migração gradual de PD e SP para fora de poças-de-maré. A
variabilidade da paisagem (heterogeneidade de microhabitats) de praias com diferente
geomorfologia influenciou a estrutura populacional de PD em rocha emersa do nível intertida
Desempenho do trator agrícola em mobilização do solo: Estudo de caso com alfaias rebocadas
O consumo de combustível por hectare é o principal indicador técnico de avaliação da eficiência energética de utilização do trator agrícola, constituindo uma importante referência do desempenho do conjunto trator-alfaia. Este parâmetro traduz o envolvimento das diversas variáveis que condicionam o rendimento global da transformação do combustível fornecido ao motor em trabalho útil realizado pela alfaia em mobilização do solo. Os resultados de ensaios de campo realizados em explorações agrícolas do Alentejo são apresentados neste artigo para comprovarem a importância relativa dessas variáveis e para estabelecer equações de referência que relacionem o consumo de combustível por hectare com o esforço de tração solicitado pela alfaia. Estas poderão ser utilizadas para comparar sistemas de mobilização do solo alternativos, com diferentes exigências de tração, ou para avaliar o dimensionamento do conjunto trator-alfaia
Association Between Motor Competence and Response Time in Portuguese Youth
This study explores the association between motor competence (MC) and response time (RT) in schoolchil- dren. 251 participants (mean age 14.58 ± 3.07 years) completed assessments over two sessions using standardized procedures. MC was evaluated through the Motor Competence Assessment, which includes stability, locomotor, and manipulative skills, while RT was measured using a structured reaction task. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression analyses examined the relationships between variables. Moderate correl- ation (r 1⁄4 −0.35, p < .001), with stability and manipulative skills as significant predictors of RT were found. The model accounted for 24.4% of RT variance, highlighting MC’s role in neuromuscular coordination and cognitive processing. These findings emphasize the importance of MC in more efficient responses during youth, with potential applications for physical education and sports
Trauma na infância e comportamentos autolesivos em jovens adultos: o papel mediador do entrapment
A presente investigação teve como objetivo estudar a relação entre trauma na infância
e comportamentos autolesivos. Foi também testado o efeito de mediação do
entrapment na relação entre trauma na infância e comportamentos autolesivos.
Participaram 273 jovens adultos, estudantes da Universidade de Évora, entre os 18 e
os 25 anos. Para testar o modelo de mediação utilizou-se path analysis por modelação
de equações estruturais. Os resultados do estudo indicaram uma associação
significativa entre o trauma na infância e comportamentos autolesivos, mesmo após o
controlo do efeito das covariáveis relevantes e variáveis sociodemográficas. Além
disso, observou-se um efeito de mediação parcial de entrapment entre o trauma na
infância e comportamentos autolesivos. Os resultados sugerem que o trauma na
infância contribui significativamente para o desenvolvimento de comportamentos
autolesivos. Embora entrapment contribua para a compreensão da relação entre
aquelas variáveis, evidencia-se a necessidade de incluir outras variáveis mediadoras
para explicar melhor a relação; - Childhood trauma and self-injurious behaviour in young adults: the mediating

Abstract:
The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between childhood trauma
and self-harmed behaviours. The mediation effect of entrapment on the relationship
between childhood trauma and self-harmed behaviors was also tested. Participated
273 young adults, students at the University of Évora, aged between 18 and 25 years
old. Path analysis using structural equation modeling was used to test the mediation
model. The results of this study indicated a significant association between childhood
trauma and self-harmed behaviors, even after controlling the effect of relevant
covariates and sociodemographic variables. In addition, a partial entrapment
mediation effect was observed between childhood trauma and self-harmed behaviors.
The results suggest that childhood trauma contributes significantly to the development
of self-harmed behaviors. Although entrapment contributes to understanding the
relationship between those variables, highlighting the need to include other mediating
variables to fully explain the relationship
Geochemical evolution of cumulate-gabbro Interaction with Seawater and Supercritical for Enhanced Mineral Carbonation. A study case.
This study investigates the potential for mineral carbonation of carbon dioxide (CO2) in plutonic basicrocksthroughaseriesoflaboratoryexperimentsconductedintwostages, under pressure (8 MPa) and temperature conditions (313.15 K) akin to those near a CON injection well. Stage-I facilitateddissolutionwithcrushedrockexposedtoCO2supersaturatedseawater (0.6M), while Stage-ll promoted carbonation through cubic rock specimens in contact with subsaturated seawater (0.1 M). A multi-analytical approach was employed to track the mineralogical and geochemical evolution of the rock and seawater. Brine analyses shows significant increases in iron, magnesium, and calcium ions, with reductions in silicon and aluminium levels. The solid phase showed minimal geochemical and mineralogical changes. Nevertheless, new mineral phases like haliteanddolomiteweredetectedbyX-raydiffractionwithagrazinggeometry. In fact, although detected on a bulk analysis, on the surface of specimens, and after the 120 days experiment, carbonate phases were detected. The geochemical model developed in the CrunchFlow code successfully replicated behaviour over longer periods. O Grupo Português da Associação Internacional de Hidrogeólogos (AIH-GP) é uma organização científica e educacional sem
fins lucrativos que congrega especialistas dedicados ao estudo, captação, gestão e proteção das águas subterrâneas. A AIH
representa cerca de 4000 profissionais em vários países, organizados em grupos nacionais e comissões e networks, promovendo
a partilha de conhecimento e a cooperação internacional na área da hidrogeologia e na gestão dos recursos hídricos.
A AIH é uma associação de referência internacional no apoio a diversas ações de divulgação e valorização dos recursos hídricos
em particular no que se refere aos riscos, ameaças e vulnerabilidades a que estão sujeitos face ao desenvolvimento económico,
crescimento populacional, crescente procura, impacte da industrialização, agricultura e outras atividades antrópicas, bem como
o efeito das alterações climáticas.
O AIH-GP, no triénio 2025-2027, tem como principais objetivos fomentar a investigação e o desenvolvimento no setor da
hidrogeologia, promover a partilha de informação técnica e científica, e contribuir para a formação e qualificação dos profissionais,
contribuindo para um maior fortalecimento da rede de hidrogeólogos em Portugal. Entre as principais iniciativas destacam-se:
a organização de eventos científicos; a promoção de ações de educação ambiental, para sensibilizar a sociedade para a
importância das águas subterrâneas; a oferta formativa através da organização de webinars, workshops e cursos, presenciais
e/ou online; e a colaboração com entidades nacionais e internacionais, através de atividades e networking. As atividades
desenvolvidas pelo AIH-GP estão enquadradas nos atuais desafios económicos, ambientais e societais, como um contributo
para a sua concretização a nível nacional e internacional.
A sua constituição por especialistas de várias áreas de uma comunidade científica comprometida na investigação e
desenvolvimento, promove sinergias e partilha, interna e externa, resultando na consolidação de conhecimento especializado na
temática das águas subterrâneas. A cooperação entre as diferentes associações é fundamental na sensibilização dos problemas
afetos aos recursos hídricos, tal como na apresentação de soluções para os mesmos, resultando numa união e aproximação dos
seus membros integrantes gerando impactes diretos ou indiretos na qualidade de vida das sociedades.
A reativação da rede ECHN-PT (Early Career Hydrogeologists’ Network – Portuguese Chapter) é umas das estratégias do
grupo, sendo garantida a continuidade da participação de jovens hidrogeólogos nas associações, promovendo a discussão
e partilha de conhecimento, ideias e experiências, dando voz e oportunidade às mentes criativas e dinâmicas dos jovens no
desenvolvimento de sinergias e atividades futuras

Alkaline silicate melts play a crucial role in the accumulaƟon of rare earth elements (REE),
niobium (Nb), and other criƟcal raw-materials deposits. These melts typically originate from mantle-
derived magmas enriched in incompaƟble elements that evolve through extensive fracƟonaƟon,
leading to them to develop high concentraƟons of REE, Nb, Y, Zr, and other high-fieldstrength elements
(HFSE). During late-stage magmaƟc-hydrothermal processes, halogen-bearing fluids further
concentrate such elements and migrate to shallower levels. This type of magmaƟsm and associated
metallogenic processes are usually associated with riŌing events, in extensional tectonic seƫngs.
In the Iberian Massif, a large set of alkaline magmaƟc plutons were emplaced during the
riŌrelated magmaƟsm concomitant with the opening of the Rheic Ocean during Cambro-Ordovician
Ɵmes, specifically in the Ossa-Morena Zone (OMZ, SW Iberia) and in the Galicia-Trás-os-Montes Zone
(NW Iberia). From the alkaline bodies that occur in the OMZ, the Alter Pedroso Massif stands out for
its extreme lithological varieƟes that include a range of syenite rocks, including pegmatoids and highly
differenƟated facies. The internal structure of this massif is characterized by an apparent horizontal
layering, separaƟng a boƩom unit composed of leucocraƟc syenite cumulates, and a top unit
characterized by mesocraƟc aegirine- and riebeckite-syenites oŌen intersected by numerous
pegmatoid varieƟes. The mesocraƟc syenite unit oŌen show differenƟated rocks composed of disƟnct
assemblages of accessory minerals, suscepƟble to be grouped into three types: (i) allanite phenocrysts
in aegirine-syenites, (ii) thorite and allanite inclusions in zircons from aegirine-free riebeckite-syenites,
and (iii) fluor-apaƟte, REE fluor-carbonates, Nb-Y and Nb-Th oxides in aegirine-riebeckite syenites. It is
noteworthy the clear microzoning of the last type, in which the fluor-apaƟte and the REE fluor-
carbonates are clearly separated from the HFSE-oxides. Fluorite and zircon are present in all these
differenƟated rocks. Whole rock geochemistry studies from all samples show an increase of the criƟcal
elements when compared to the "barren" syenite units, especially in REE (sum LREE over 4.000ppm),
Nb (up to 1.400ppm) and Y (up to 2400ppm), with Zr over 10.000ppm. Besides the rare metal
mineralizaƟon in these unusual syenite facies, the pegmatoid rocks show high accumulaƟon of large
euhedral zircon megacrystals.
In Iberia, similar REE-Nb-Y mineralizaƟon has only been documented in the Galiñero Complex
(NW Spain), while in Alter Pedroso, the accessory mineralogy has been always poorly characterized.
New mineralogical and geochemical data of the different facies of the Alter Pedroso Massif thoroughly
record and highlight the mechanisms of the consensual metallogenic model for Zr-REE-Nb-Y
mineralizaƟon in alkaline-silicate magmaƟc systems, namely the differenƟaƟon enrichments through
liquid immiscibility or fracƟonal crystallizaƟon
Comparing One Health and Ecohealth with Other Integrated Approaches to Health
This chapter is an overview of several of the various integrated approaches to health, namely One Health, Ecohealth, Planetary Health, Conservation Medicine, Environmental Health, One Welfare, Comparative Medicine and One Ocean Health. A description is provided of the historical roots of each of these science-based approaches, while considering the convergence and divergence of each to the others. This chapter also highlights the importance of contributions from Indigenous Peoples and traditional knowledge that have influenced these more recent concepts. In this chapter you will learn about many of the different ways we approach health and comparatively dive into the discussion on differences and similarities to each of the approaches. You will then have the opportunity to consider arguments for or against calls for convergence. Complementary to Chapter 1, there is a more expansive timeline provided throughout the text highlighting various important dates, people and events in each of the respective histories. Throughout this chapter we aim for you to become more familiar with the use of a systems-thinking approach across a transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral playing field, by comparing the many integrated health approaches. We highlight the importance of effective communication, cooperation amongst all sectors through the collective learning process and reflective practice that are fundamental to One Health and Ecohealth.NEO
